    ArmA is just ... disappointing

Honsetly, with a variety of decent war based sims/games coming out, its make or break for Arma, I've got my copy around my clan, nice No-CD & Hamachi, does us over at least till Opf2. I suggest you do the same untill BIS listen to there community and get something done.

    release over steam

To not release it on steam would be to shot yourself in the foot. Its also a pointless ll because those who are against already own it in DVD form anyways and would have no need to use steam, to those who have an interest putting on steam would be the best thing BIS could do.

    Game Performance

Well if he can't get performance from that system what hope is there. Refund it, swap it and wait for any news on patches or better yet just wait till its in the bargin bin and get it then with all the patches.

    ArmA 2

No I've never developed game but I am quite aware of the requirements, dev process (I studied design at college and spent 2 months with a Games Dev team) But you must understand that if BIS don't listen to what we, as there consumers want then the game is going to fall flat on its face. Alot of people here would buy it sure enough, bugs n all but you never aim a game at the niche crowd. A common problem with Arma is because of the aweful performance of the first demo a lot of the non-hardcore (espiecally clans) simply didn't play it or if they did soon ditched it. This is where money is made and lost. First impressions count for everything, even now people are put off because performance is so bad, gameplay is weak and bugs have been carried over from Op:F. I'm quite aware that companys use the same code and improve on an engine visually, the problem I have is that the improvements are nothing ground breaking and have been kicking around for sometime in other games. In the reviews of the game graphics where not a high point of Arma and actually distracted people because they tried to cram so much in. This caused headaches in performance for so many people - They should focus on making the game 100% playable before even talking about Arma 2. Fix Arma 1, make it the game it was meant to be played and Arma 2 will surely rise to the challenge because it needs to, Op:F 2 has already a massive advantage over Arma 2. Just to short list Op:F 2 has over Arma ; Real Physics Amazing Graphics An original setup (USA/NATO vs Chinase based forces)

    Game Performance

Goto the shop you bought the game from, get a refund. Save your money for a finished product - Crysis is around the corner and has extremely large maps, not so much realism. Call of Duty 4 is out very soon and without a shadow of a doubt they will be some amazing realism mods out for it.
  6. Opf2 is based upon the same engine that Colin Macre Dirt is based upon. Amazing graphics, physics - Thats alot to compete with I suggest BIS pull there socks up and get there fingers out otherwise Codemasters will be laughing (and rightly so Flashy 2 looks to be amazing)

    ArmA 2 on Xbox 360

Well, Maruk at GC said the version on Xbox 360 would be on 100% And as you now, BIS would have from X360 version much more money than from PC Version. It's quite easy to understand that PC version today, would't make much money. But, it's only your opinion but Bis have made in my opinon a very good thing with this annoucing on Xbox 360. Considering how Elite bombed on the xbox they'd have to pull something pretty special off to compete with the other big names.

    ArmA 2

This has to be the biggest joke ever, they get a poor excuse of the game out of the door label it the ultimate sim and we all paid good money for it for what? A large scale beta test so they can develop Arma 2, which judging by the current screenshots looks exactly like Arma 1 execpt on a different island / different vehicles. As someone mentioned the Ai recongise corners! Wow that is one heck of an achievenment, I'm sorry to rain on peoples parade but all these 'features' should of been included in the original Arma - At the very least in the next patch. Its built on the same code, they must be an incredibly good reason why they can't be incorprated in the next patch. New Toys and Island, yeah I'd pay for that, stuff that Op:f 2 is going to have (real physics) or what was promised in the really early previews (fully destructable enviroments) Yeah I'd pay for that but the same bugged, broken, unrealistic game in a different dress? Don't think so its a f**king joke. Fix what you've already made, prove you actually listen to the community and then release Arma 2

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

This is unbelievable, are you guys trying to de-rail this thread? (Which you already done) This is our one chance to let the devs know how we feel and now its ruined by fanboys and people who having nothing better to-do then get one over someone else. Now I'm asking, anyone (including sickboy and Skullburner) Stay out the bloody thread unless you have anything negative[/] to say about Arma that will help the devs. Or better yet take it up in PM as one rule abidding memember did with me (top hat to him! Skullburner and Sickboy should be warned and should remain out of the topic!
  10. After numerous people arguing for and against arma in the dissappointed thread I'm started this one to help BIS. Its a summary of what was said purely about the game. NO OPINIONS FROM EITHER CAMP If anyone does post an opinon then either close/lock this thread or delete there post. Please feel free to add anything I may have missed. Improved Ai In both Pathfinding, combat and CQB. Reduce the Cheating CPU Ai The ai can see through bushes, are all crackshots with every weapon and can spot your in the dark even without night vision - A reduction in Ai accuracy, hearing, perception would go a long way. In real life thousands of rounds can be expended before it hits it target, in Arma it only takes a dozen shots before the battle is over Team Ai The ai needs to use its roles better (eg machinegunners providing covering fire / suppression) Snipers acting a snipers. Team Ai needs to take cover, flank, skirmish/bounding overwatch, Retreat/Regroup, Fallback. At the moment at every shot they hit the ground where they stand, not seeking cover. Broken Ai Pathfinding, RPGs shooting at infantry, gunships can't target ground units properly, harriers the same etc. Close Combat Ai Ai dosen't use buildings or urban cover very well at all. They don't hide behind low walls or walls for that matter. They get stuck in buildings, spin in circles. The ai needs to use windows/roof tops etc In urban combat they should be a greater use of taking cover by droping to there knee in or around urban cover oppossed to going prone all the time. Graphics Issues LOD and Texture issues are ongoing and need to be fixed ASAP. The HDR issues are frequenet an option to turn it off needs to be impleneted however difficult it maybe it is killing performance of so many different computers. CTD's need to resolved ASAP It's killing multiplayer. Tracers are poor, Damage textures are poor (rusty wheels after being shot at?) Performance Issues The map is to large and Northen end is completely unplayable for many many people. Suggestions have been to reduce the detail of trees and foilage (especially bushes & grass) or (and evidence can seen with Saharni Lite) Cut the map in Halve and present it as to two seprate 'islands' or terrains (At the very least for map editiors) Streaming of data needs to be dramatically improvded. Sound The sound is weak in almost all areas, Voice acting, radio's, weapons - these need to improvded. Animations Alot of work needs to be done here to blend animations properly, to create new animatons for doors/getting in or out of vehicles. Animations transactions between being killed and last played animation greatly need improving (Kill a AT man in firing postion and you'll see what I mean) I'd even go as far as to suggest using an open source physics engine to implenet some really simple kind of ragdoll. Reloading, changing weapons, running, walking while in firepostion need overhauling. (check out santacurys OPF animation pack for examples) Gameplay Weapon ranging/accuracy & dispersion needs improving a great deal to the same level Flashpoint had. Localised hit damage (being shot in the arm should disable not kill me) Working body armour, Tanks need adjusting to the real life counter parts. Multiplayer Not enough BIS/Publisher supported servers. Again post if I've missed anything but no opinons

    Conclusions of the dissappointed thread

From what I read in the Complaints thread it was main cause behind the LoD / Texture flickering. Is there any conclusive tests to prove that? If not I can remove it but the LOD issue is a big problem.

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

Vilas I hope you can resolve your issues but could your issue be moved to a 'Vlias tech issue' topic in the tech forum? On topic: I keep hitting on the animations; I think for me (and this is purely my opinon) that animations & sound (with a semi decent) graphics engine go a long way in creating convicing atomsphere. Take the example of the Full spectrum Warrior games. Though a different genre and gametype still a similar theme (modern armed forces) If you watch the animation for they way they move, attack and so on its truely is amazing. (IMO it was crying out to be an FPS) I mention this because if memoary serves alot of the animations where motion captured, I mention in my other thread about Sanctuarys amazing work he did with the animation packs for Flashy; that'd be a good example of what is possible in Arma. I never played SLX mod (though I always wanted to ) But they was at least the opening of doors on vehicles. In reguards to physics theres a number of open source physic engines heres one http://www.tokamakphysics.com/ I'm not an expert in programming but maybe its something the dev team can consider testing? Even basic ragdoll and vehcile physics would go long way. Hopefully keep Arma and BIS alive in the face of direct competetion of there previous publisher. The way I see its a race to make Arma the best possible game while preserving all that made it great in Flashy before Codemasters release there game.

    Conclusions of the dissappointed thread

Please reframe from posting your opinon as this not the purpose of this thread. Its purpose is to collect what has been generally said in the complaints thread and list it here. Note I'm not presenting these as facts, I'm listing a clear idea of how some people feel could make the game better and I'm listing major game stopping bugs common to alot of people. If you wish to argue to the point of the complaints / suggestions / grivences - Please feel free to in either aanother thread or using Private messaging It'd be nice to see a conclusion thread of the good points so they can weighed against whats in here and the other thread.

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

You do but you wouldn't be correcting me only giving your opinon, but not in this thread. In private or on another topic. On topic. Being runover, that has to be one of the worst bit of animation in any game. Thats something that needs to be improved. Sickboy implying people are stupid or are idiots is akin to flaming and is not very nice.

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

I have a Intel Quad Core and 8800GTX running in SLi w/ 4gig of total ram on a new brand new system. I still can't get more then 25 FPS at any given time, is that acceptable? (With every other game running on max with no problems) Take alook in the tech forum you'll see literrally dozens of people with the same issue. Like Oblivion? Battlefield 2/2142 though maps are no where near the size of Arma can handle 64 players, with full physics, high polygon models, effects thats are top notch. Maybe BIS should re-examine there engine and take advice from the games that are selling - scale down there maps and dramtically reduce the LOD for distant objects. Maybe even allow the 2nd core to be used! - Expanding on the smaller map - Notice of Sahrni lite runs much much better then the normal version?

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

Why are you posting in here Jester? Your not adding anything to the topic nor are you helping getting the point across. People have for month posted in a gentle manner, a harsh manner and a neutral manner and for what? To be shot down by a fanboy or a mod. This is a topic to let the Dev's know how we feel why we are disappointed, if you check all the posts you can see people have left reasons. 'why do you think you deserve special treatment? ' We have a bought a game that is not what was advertised or made out to be and this is our chance to change Arma for the better.

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

Me and many others would disagree with that statement, where as OPF poor graphics and ai bugs could be easily overlooked given the scale of the game Armed Assault however you can not. It boils down to this - With Arma we'd expect the bugs that where in Flashy to be resolved, animations and all the short comings improved as much as possible. What we have is a game that in terms of gameplay and immersion falls far behind its older sibling. Like its been said in the topic - you can't get a feel for the game. And in regards to tanks, what I originally said was "Why do tanks drive through towns instead of around?(if the better choice)" What I am referring to is tanks getting stuck in towns / urban build up - crashing into a building, reversing then attempting to go the same route, crash into same building, rinse and repeat. This bug was Flashy (though not as bad) and was duly noted - So why is it present in Arma, why isn't the path finding improved? Again links back to the frustration felt and how the game is ruined by lots of little bugs that break the immersion. In regards to 'flamming the devs' I've bought there game, I'm unhappy at the lack of progress on there part. I've explained why I don't like it, what in my opinion (and shared by others) is broken / needs improving. I could say is softly, I could say it alot worse then have, either ways I've provided examples asked valid questions so dosent matter how I say it - as long as its said. Don't get me wrong I think Arma can sometimes be a great game, I love OPF and have all the expansions. I want to support BIS, I want to help and I want to make sure Arma becomes the game it was meant to be. I'm not a coder nor am I part of BIS de v team, I don't think its down to modders to fix a broken engine - its down to BIS and us making sure these issues are made aware so they can take it on board and do what they can.

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

Ziiip your the model fanboi. But I am glad you agree on some my points  If people don't whine/complain/crit then the game will never get better and you'll hear the same people saying the same things 1, 2, 3 years from now. Games that support Dual Core; (Please take note of WoW) Quake 4, FEAR, Doom, Prey, Stalker, Battlefield 2142, Halo 2, Supreme Commander, Age of Empires 3, City of Heroes, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Rainbow Six Vegas, Splinter Cell : Double Agent, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, World of Warcraft, Vanguard, Serious Sam 2, Shadowrun, Football Manager 2006/07, Call of Duty 2, Comoany of Heroes.... I say take note of WoW as its an older game in the list and at the time it was developed Dual Core was not as common on the market, changes where made as with Quake 4 and Doom 3 in patchs that made changes to the code which allowed the second core to be used.

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

Did operation flashpoint not have a basic AAR that should the amount of people you killed and amoutn wounded at the end of each mission (be it MP, SP or in the editor) Is armed assault not based off the same engine? So stands to reason we should have this feature and we should be able to discuss this feature as it was an integral part of Flashy and Arma is an extension off the same engine. And the VBS point is valid untill a definitive answer is given to why customers like myself and others cannot have what we paid for? You must see why I'm making this point, on my box it says Armed assault is the ultimate Military simulator, yet clearly its not since VBS2 is far superior and contains many of the features that we want in the game that we purchased. If you can't provide an answer either in techincal or legal reasons;then you should be recalling Arma from shelves and replace the 'ultimate Military simulator' with the words Military based action game or words to that effect. Mr Wolle I feel cheated I feel BIS have taken my money by falsing advertising me the game, I feel that the money I've paid for has gone into the development of VBS2 and I'm not seeing any benifits - If BIS was a UK company I'd reported them or there publisher to Trade & Standards but alas your not, see here I am voicing my concern, and it is my very right to do so.
  20. Jambo107

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

You've misunderstood the meaning. The effects, the fixes that make the VBS engine better is what we the end user wants. I'm not interested in the command engine, the training module I'm not even interested in  the Marine, UKF or ADF material - What I want is BIS to listen to what where asking, we as there customer expect when sold 'the ultimate military simulator' to be just that. Not the crap stripped down beta for the 'real' version. Thats the fustration, thats why so many people feel BIS don't care - It feel's almost like I've been robbed I'm paying to test the beta ye the fruits of our labour is out of reach.
  21. Jambo107

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

The silly thing is though with Armed Assault is everything we've begged for, everything we complain/moan/whine/scream for could be put right very quickly (not easily but nothing is easy) by taking what they've got right in VBS2 and porting it in or at the very least minmicing it. It's BIS engine, they have the right to do that and I'm not talking about converting or porting the addons specfic to the military but the sutle things dare I say like TRACERS. Right now BIS are proving that Codemasters where right in dropping them, and that codemasters game (probaly dumbed way down) will outclass ARMA/Game 2 - thats the impression I'm getting and its certainly why alot of my clan memembers refuse to purchase Arma. -Flashy had one - as basic as it was it was certainly better then nothing.
  22. Jambo107

    Is it worth it?

Its worse. Take some honest advice - Arma is a great but critically flawed right now. Its graphically more impression but gameplay wise dose not even compete with Flashy. Stick with OPF wait maybe 6 or 7 months & if BIS get there finger out, then go for Armed Assault.
  23. Jambo107

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

Also, what happened to the AAR? A key feature that dispeared.
  24. Jambo107

    ArmA is just ... disappointing

I loved Flashpoint, played it everyday up till the release of Armed Assault. I wish I could say the same for ARMA. Graphics & Visuals For a game that looks 2-3 years old it runs crap, total utter crap. One of the things that BIS promised was improved performance yet we see none. Alot of fanbois argue that Arma is different then most other games bbecause of the amount of units at any one time, Oblivion has hundreds even thousands of NPC's moving any one time in the wilderness(not including instanced based houses/interiors) Yet it can run smooth! (And looks 10x better) Countless threads in the tech forum all about the same problems, problems which where reported 7 Months ago. Specifcally; Low performance in Northen Sarhani LOD / Textures issues Big drops in FPS when using Iron sights No support for Dual Core or proper Sli support - Sorry its 2007 this should be standard Hardcoded HDR, the same effect you desire can be reached other ways, why hardcore a massive performance sapping feature when the vast majority of people don't want or use it? Visual effects leave alot to be desired. Tires that turn to rusty wheels after a couple of shots? Fire effects are a joke. Tracers are aweful. Building damage, again cheap looking effects. Sun glare over the top, no reflection in water - for christ sake a modder released a DLL for you 2 years ago The world isnt flat, roads can have ditches, embankments. The world isnt a barren flatland with random villages, theres small hills / fields / tall grass / rock formations. Land is muddy when it rains, arid when its sunny. Its snows in the winter. Arma as big as it is is devoid execpt in some areas of life. Hills are just slopes, bushes are purely decorational (Since Ai can see through them anyways) Theres no animals or wildlife, no farm land or any of the above. The map belongs in 2003 not 2007. And I must note, poor tech support with over zealous Fanboi's who shoot down any constructive support or critism Gameplay & Immersion They is very little immersion evidently; Sound - One word. Aweful. Did you even test the game? (In reference to super loud tanks / helis) Ai - The AI in OPF was bad, even for its time but ARMA is a joke - I've never seen worse pathfinding. Ai have no emotion, no idea of how to fight in combat. Urban combat - they is none because the AI get stuck on walls or are dead before anything can happen. Call of Duty I a 4 year old game feature Ai that could take cover behind walls, low rubble, in buildings behind wreckage and so on. In arma your ai run around untill there dead or just drop to the ground in low grass in plain sight? Military Commanders would gag in horror if there troops did this. Ai don't respond to commands, follow you like sheep and can't even fight for themselves, often running into a line of fire. Classic examples are AT Troop facing off against a BMP or any armoued vehicle. And for the love of God why do they fire RPGs at men?! And as mentioned upteen times, why are they crack shots with anyweapon of any calibre from any distance! Wheres the covering fire? Wheres the Flanking movements? Wheres the Skirmishing / Bounding overwatch? Wheres the dynamic switch of formation to suit the battlefield situation? Wheres the morale / retreating / regrouping / calling in reniforcments? Why are my team mates idiots? Why are vehicle/drivers so stupid? Why don't harriers engage ground targets? Why don't SU's target anything? Why Do tanks drive into trees and get bounced back, then try again & again & again? Why do tanks drive through towns instead of around?(if the better choice) Why do SF sappers not use there explosives but shoot vehicles when ordered to attack? Why do units shoot when orded not to? Why do units engage and crazy ranges (300 metres+) but not in close combat? Why do you units jog/sprint everywhere unless ordered to walk? (Even in urban combat or stealth) Why Do units in vehicles come to a complete stop when being shot at (though alive) and sit inside until you kill them? Why can't armoured vehicles use formations? Why do machine gunners stand and shot instead of finding a postion to shot from (for that matter why cant they rest on objects?) Why do snipers shoot like machine gunners? Why do snipers engage in frontline combat with there pistol oppsossed to what a sniper is actually for? Why do units drop to prone at every single shot fired instead of looking for cover or moving to cover and going prone? Immersion Animation is terrible in fact I suspect alot of the animation is taken directly from Op:f - Walking of soliders when weapons are in safety but everything else....its terrible. Walking/sneaking - what the hell is that? A squat walk - oh christ I've shit my pants walk? Getting in vehicles - in Flashy you could get away with it but not today. Its 2007 and its not acceptable theres no open door get in, no climb aboard or get out animations. All the animations are canned. I mean shooting someone - its just kills all immersion watching a unit play through its animations for several seconds even though its 'dead' No weapon reload - wow my mag just dispeared! Okay so onto gameplay I'll list key things missing; A thought out practical interface for well to be honset everything important. Walking upto to the vehicle and moving my mouse around crazy to try and get to get in symbol is not just annoying its plain bad design. What where you thinking - it was often touted as one of the worst features of Flashpoint and you somehow made it worse! Commanding squad is a nightmare again possible the worst feature of flashpoint as mentioned in dozens of reviews at the time and yet you've not only retained it - you made it more difficult by removing colour coding! Well done BIS you deserve a medal. Damage values are messed up 1 hit kill to my arm? or any part of my body? No body armour to speak of. T72 a big pile of metal scrap everytime. Weapons ranged very stupid, making using sniper rifles a chore (At least put an option in to retain orginal flashy settings) Conceleament is usless as well since Ai can see you from any where with pintpoint accuracy. No shooting from vehicles - not even littlebirds. No modular damage (like shooting out part of vehicle to effect performance) No physics, no ragdoll! If the game was optimazed and porgrammed to a level that was acceptable then physics could be easily implemented, they've been added to PS2 games with small amounts of ram on games with dozens of units - a PC with 1gig of ram could handle more more! No tension no atmosphere, just fustration in every feature, reminders everywhere you look your playing a game, a very heavily bugged game. My posted sounds harsh but BIS took my love of flashpoint, promised me lots of change, promised to take onboard what people had be complaining about for YEARS with Flashy and ultimately didnt listen. Now I've wasted £29 that could of been spent on quality titles like R6: Vegas instead of 'beta' testing a game that was supposed to be 'retail' 7 months ago. I don't care what anyone says but when you buy a product that proudly claims its the ultimate military sim and dosen't deliever I expect my money back or at the very least an knowledgement of the problems, accept where they've cocked up and actually listen to whats being send keeping us in the loop! What we got is Mod's closing topics, banning people left right and center and zealous fanbois screaming blue murder if anyone steps and says anything. A very unsastfied custimer.
  25. Hi, I've searched the forums for converting OPF weapons into ARMA however I only came across one thread and it was very vauge. Granq (creator the recent BTR) mentioned use the '8 step guide found in the zip' but they was no link or reference to where this guide or zip is located. My question is therefor two fold, Is there a comprehensive step by step guide on convertering weapons from OPF to ARAMA (or from scratch) if so where is it located, or if the answer to the above question is found in the 8 step Guide, where is this guide located? Cheers
