Need two lane bridges, not one for sake of AI
Jex =TE= replied to ModaFlanker's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
That might be really easy to do with the right script but... do you drive on the left or the right? As the wheel is on the the left hand side, I would say drive on the right. Is it me or did OFP AI handle driving better? -
I'd be suprised if you couldn't hit a target 30m away. First time I fired a rifle in basic training was 5 shots @30m. After that it's onto the range to hit targets 300m away so your analogy is wrong. Mind you, this was with the SA80 but I wouldn't have thought there'd be much difference with the M16.

Collection of Undocumented/Lesser-Known Features
Jex =TE= replied to frederf's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
But I can't seem to get it to work. Can anyone confirm this still works as of the latest Beta? If so, please elaborate on just what you did. Thanks! exactly as its described. do you have a mod that changes the map icons? -

This is a script - they don't go out by default unless a patch has changed things. -

It does. When people use Von I see there names pop up under the text chat in the colour of their channel. It may not work in Direct chat though and if you are close to a group using group chat, you'll still hear them because you can over hear players chatting. If you're not in their group/side you won't see their names. -

That's actually incorrect. I was hiding up in a house not so long ago and the AI were all over the town with friendlies scattered all over the palce. I had been shooting out the top floor window for 10 minutes at AI crossing the streets and I turned around to go to the next room and a spetnaz guy had come up the stairs and shot me dead. -
I don't think you can really compare the two. For a start you have two eyes (to judge distance) and a brain to actually make the image (your brain forms the image of how you seet hings, not necessarily how it is seen) and a camera lens is no comparison to this. However I don't like games that include what the eye would do. I have enough trouble with the stupid lighting (is that the HDR thing?) - my eyes adjust millions of time faster than what I'm subjected to in arma and it's a little frustrating. Having a restricted view on a screen that resticts your view seems a little weird to me. However it is an option which is a good thing, unlike HDR.

As far as jets go - please fix the throttle.

I'm finding it hard to understand some of the view points in this thread - have you guys even used a pair of binoculars before? There is absolutely nothing realistic about being fixed in one spot. Binoculars are easy things to pull out (I used to keep them under my combats round my neck and it takes about 3-5 seconds to get them out and I can move about freely). I can even use my binoculars one handed whilst holding a rifle in the other and move about. I've never been paralyzed on the spot for doing so. Some argue that it's making it more like an FPS - I don't see the point here because you can't shoot someone with your binoculars and if I understand this correctly, they still need to be holstered before you can bring you weapon up to commence firing. I haven't seen one credible argument for keeping this paralyzation process and as it's going to be a mod, nobody has to use it if they don't wish to. Personally I love the work already going into this. Now I won't have to sit through a triple animation where I get my rifle out, shoulder it to bring up my bins and then put my bins away to bring my rifle up once more. Good riddance to bad rubbish

Which is why you cannot use kegety's pbo prog. Sounds like you saved the file as a .txt whereas it needs to be .pbo

I can think of a con. If your track ir breaks, you'll be very upset

Who are you talking too?

Yeah thats right... but they didn't and we have to. Let's say... if M16A2 shoots 400 rounds per second instead of 750, AK74 is not AK74 and all the scopes don't have zoom (like ACOG 4x or Barrett scope 14x) can we tell that its realistic? IF ARMA WANTS TO BE MOST REALISTIC SIM, WE CANT SAY THAT BIS DONT HAVE TO MAKE GUNS SAME LIKE IN REAL LIFE eh? Is there some point to this?

Short take off was adopted as the best means of take off to reduce debris into the air intakes. As far as the US/UK versions go, they are practically the same now I think since the UK gov't decided to hand majority control to the US leaving 25% to BAe. Of course once you have dropped all your bombs you no longer have a full load but arma wasn't meant to be a flight sim. Therefore the skimped big time on the flight dynamics and it's strange the went for the harrier at all - why not the f16/f15? We would then not have to worry about the VSTOL capabilities...

Actually in ArmA you don't put your gun on your back when using binoculars. You let it hang on invisible weapon swing. If I should do this (let the gun hang) in real life I wouldn't feel any need to switch the gun on safety, since most of the guns shouldn't fire unless you press the trigger. Well, I'm not a soldier so this is just my opinion, but I doubt it's supposed to be a feature. Having served in the british army I can tell you that if you pointed a live weapon at someone you'd likely get a rap around the noggin for it (if ur lucky). Letting a live weapon swing freely is against safety protocols and you would always put the weapon on safety when not firing it. However, when in the field these protocols can be forgotten so it's not a "yes, definitely every soldier makes their weapon safe", because some don't and that's when accidents happen. With training you learn to pop it on/off without thinking about it. Someone forgot to put their safety on once as we were returning from patrol. He was back at camp and meant to be guarding the approach but accidentally discharged his rifle. Good job it was just training because the weapon was pointed in our general direction. I notice that people tend to accidentally fire off their weapon in game. Great way to kill your friends and/or make yourself noticed (as is true in the real world). I always rest my finger on the mouse wheel until I need to fire as a few times my finger has slipped and I've popped off a round.

I ran a test on that and found that the AI sight does change on the light level. Lying prone I had an ai walk towards me (safe mode) from 200m; Dark no NVG = ~15m Dark + NVG = ~30m Daylight = 60-70m Lying under a street lamp makes no difference to these ranges but I would say that if we can black out a town, mission makers should drop the AI abilities to reflect upon that. Now whether this holds up once you have been detected I don't know.

Community Sound Mod - idea
Jex =TE= replied to Blackknight.au's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
One thing that always gets me with sound mods is the distance you pick them up from. Having used BPA, CSM and FDF, the distance at which I hear tanks approaching say, changes between the mods and some that sound close by are in fact, miles away. Is this a limitation of the soundcard (sb audigy 4 in my case) or is this coded? If coded please try and make these ranges realistic and thanks for the work on a new sound mod -
Radar AA missiles rely on AA radar which won't pick up objects on the ground but IR missiles might be able to lock up a ground target if it was hot enough - i wonder if there have been any RL instances of this? Someone did mention something about this on another forum but there is no mention of it on the internet that can confirm such an incident took place. I seem to recall hearing something too but I don't know whether it was RL or a sim it was done in. Anyway, until its confirmed it's all just hearsay.

It's being added to Arma 2. There's a video showing how the Ai move somewhere around.

Or even funnier when one AI runs through a building and shoots your mate in the back, runs back into the building with you shooting after him but you just hit the wall and he then runs back through the building and shoots you - as you draw your last breath you hear the AI creasing up on the other side of the building...

Trying to get the damn AI to walk between a fence and a rock (on the 2 small islands up in the NW of the map) when there is 20 feet between them is impossible for them. I had to change my mission because of these friggin morons. Very frustrating and it doesn't help to read asinine comments to perfectly honest questions.
