Controls Scheme & User Interface Feedback
Iroquois Pliskin replied to HKFlash's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Trying to comprehend your idea, then incorporate it into my systems and then call it my own, of course. Turns out, your idea of slicing those small icons into two, or even three parts isn't exactly grand, again due to the pixel-precision needed to navigate such a menu. People would rather have full-sized, comprehensive icons, than go pizza slice-hunting across the screen in combat. Two icons already cover all context situations. See above. P.S. Crysis 1 gesticulate radial activation wouldn't be possible in the above case. -

Do provide an example. Pie sliced into 3 parts - do you realise that the havoc it will cause for selection purposes? Divide that small icon into 3 and tell me if the players will be able to pin-point any of the commands on the screen. -

That's exactly what we're saying, refer to - http://i45.tinypic.com/119p9id.jpg I'm not understanding silly concepts, which had been explained before in more specific terms. Stop, Fall back into formation will not, under any circumstance, be context-sensitive - they are their own commands and icons, you will not find yourself in a position where you will be able to bring up the context of "Stop" - it doesn't exist. Well, maybe if you point at the feel/ground of the AI, whom you wish to Order to "Stop" - but that's kind of redundant and unintuitive. -

Slices would be context-dependent and they must be intuitive, as shown in the general movement: "Move to -> [context: Enemy -> "ATTACK ENEMY"; Friendly (wounded) -> "HEAL FRIENDLY"];" and the general AI "use" tree: "Get in -> [context: Mines -> "DISARM; Doors/ladders -> "USE"; In a vehicle -> "DISEMBARK"];" That's only two icons and they alone can cover the scope of action, which currently are crosshair context dependent in ArmA II. If you have more on your mind, share with us. You can't, for an example, have a slice of "FLANK LEFT", since there's no context - how would you bring up said command? You don't, thus it needs its own icon-pie. Doesn't make a lot of sense, what you're saying here is to change the layout of the octagon - can't cram another independent command between those two on MadDogX's example. -

You have it the other way around: there's already a global depression, and destabilisation will come as a consequence of that. :) -

I'll leave this without comment. Man(kind) says and acts upon that, you should know it first hand, being in the cente of Europe, vilas. :) They're policing the planet on the behalf of the international community - somebody has to do it. Nothing is being taken over, resources are being freed for the free market to be bought and sold under no arbitrary restrictions of dictators. The previous four thousands years of history shows otherwise, more modern episodes display the evident supremacy of the West, against whom China dare not act. The holy things of bloodshed and a prerequisite for the Barbarian Age, maybe. :) -

Adding pies on the West-East-South ends of the menu could work, that's 3 additional commands at a minimum. Any additional diagonal icons wouldn't work, you need clear, precise Left-Up-Down-Right movements in combat. P.S. Carl, I'll give your particular layout some thought later. :) Carl, BTW, how about including an option for "Advanced AI Command" in vanilla to enable the second 1x8 radial, if anyone wishes to use it? :) The first (inner) one would contain all of the essential things for Basic AI Command, as outlined by MadDogX and myself.* *Carl was not talking about 2x8 layout on a single menu without subsections, though the above still applies to a single hotkey, mouse only radial menu. ---------- Post added at 23:40 ---------- Previous post was at 23:09 ---------- CarlGustaffa... Carl, I was afraid somebody might propose to put it on the WASD keys - it doesn't work, see Crysis 1 footage above - the mouse is the only option, having the menu with a lot of subsections on movement keys is a console port solution, see OFDragoonRacing. :) A 2x8 radial menu with a single hotkey, mouse only operation is about the limit of what we can do without breaking the game for the (new) players. -
Wouldn't you agree that VBS2 PhysX implementation is rather relevant, given the lack of any kind of info, or ArmA III footage? :) This thread is about PhysX on RV in general, I guess; there another PhysX thread in this subsection of the forums, tho it's a bit bloated with 70+ pages.

Thanks. :) Just a demonstration and a contrast to what is possible in ArmA III, and what we're lacking under current mechanics.

While a double octagon with two cirlces would be ideal, BIS would have to fine-tune it really, and I mean really hard. Upon activation the selection pointer (invisible on the menu) is centered, any mouse movement relocates it to a desired icon/command, but if a second row/circle is present, then, unless these movements are pixel-precise, you'd tend to "overshoot" the first circle and go to the outside one. ---------- Post added at 23:05 ---------- Previous post was at 23:02 ---------- In the case of a single circle/octagon radial, you need not worry about precision and focus on the gameplay. See Crysis 1 example, ZOkBtVELu7c This same interface could accommodate 3 more icons, though another circle of icons around this one would be overkill. -
Details, s'il vous plait. Go point by point and point out any errors, if present.

Declaring is not the same as enforcing. I have no information regarding the status of these specific islands, but the concept holds the same. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Civil_Administration_of_the_Ryukyu_Islands The Owner could be private, though he may hire a government to administer the land in the way that he desires, much the same way that the People of the united states of America had done with the Constitution, outlining duties and limits of the government. The government is subservient to the Owner. -

:) First, it starts out as an And, If it's a serious case, you can always take a ride in your private helicopter to the nearest hospital centre. Then, as necessity demands, Or first aid office/point can be established, The private Owner of the island collects taxes, Probably not. :) Not anymore. :) The same way a house and the land it is built on can be private with Allodial title - the Owner is King, Sovereign, Ultimate Authority. -

You forgot ragdolls, which needn't be explained in the context of infantry. Common sharing of resources and experience. If ArmA III is getting dedicated weapons/equipment keys in place, you bet DayZ is going to have the same code. ---------- Post added at 22:16 ---------- Previous post was at 22:15 ---------- You're some clown? Wat? :| What do you mean with a "different key mapping"? I don't impose any particular key map, I advocate for a dedicated weapons selection to be in the game in the first place! It's currently on the God damn F-cycle and scroll lists, which as you say, kills CQB PvP. -

I don't see how it matters. : D If the improvements seen and purported to be in ArmA III somehow not enough for Nicholas, then he's truly blind, for ArmA is not a 1 km by 1 km infantry playground: I can go from Su-25 enemy base bombing runs, to being shot down, to ejecting, to walking 5 km to get to the nearest enemy town/outpost and capture it in CQB - all a seamless experience, and BIS are improving the CQB part of the equation. -

And that is a fault of the RV engine how exactly? BS. You could have the same response levels and fluidity as in COD, but it wouldn't be ArmA with sprinting while gunning with zero recoil and 360 noscope, zero fatigue headshots. Again, review the SMK ArmA II video above. Here's another, DK7UJdBhRNU You seem to be discussing this in the context of vanilla ArmA II, while we look at ArmA III as a logical progression and at its improvements in the department of animations, movement, stances, weapon controls. Although, I admit if ArmA III doesn't have dedicated weapon keys, all those fluid animations will go to waste. -
Correct, and certain digital titles only provide the illusion of ownership, plus the bill of materials for a DVD copy is probably less than $25. No idea why anyone would want their favourite game not in their firm grasp - you could even do all sorts of things with the CD... Oh.

PRIVATE Owner. ---------- Post added at 21:42 ---------- Previous post was at 20:56 ---------- You're living in the UK, yet you look down condescendingly on the West - another type of hysteria comes to mind, called Islam and Sharia law, but what we're dealing with here is Eastern inability to cope with the "loss of face" and certain nation's dog-eat-dog mentality - who can blame them, 1.3 billion people in a system that looks only after itself. You purchased and downloaded the game installer, correct? Then all you have to do is move (*cough*copy*cough*) the original files to the hard drive of your new PC and run it there, enter the CD-Key & voila. -

YES! :icon_mrgreen: "GET IN" -> [context: Mines -> "DISARM; Doors/ladders -> "USE"; In a vehicle -> "DISEMBARK"] Pliskin's list: 1) Move to -> [context: Enemy -> "ATTACK ENEMY"; Friendly (wounded) -> "HEAL FRIENDLY"]; 2) Fall back into formation; 3) Stop; 4) Suppressive fire; 5) Get in -> [context: Mines -> "DISARM; Doors/ladders -> "USE"; In a vehicle -> "DISEMBARK"]; Debated: 6) Disengage; 7) Take cover; 8) ?; Shapes up to be a very nice AI radial menu with good utility for commanding in the immediate area in CQB. -

Iroquois Pliskin replied to LockDOwn's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
So these are FPS controls now? Put it in an AI thread and put a fork in it, when I approach a door, I will decide how to open it, either by kicking it down and guns blazing, or crouching up and peeking around the corner - all with existing controls, not need for arbitrary "modes". Even Rainbow Six's "scroll to gently open door" sucks ass, when tapping the use key and then leaning around the edge is much more efficient. -
Uh, some Nogova police modder? You're not bringing anything to the discussion, thus troll.
