UK Special Forces V1.1
Inkompetent replied to Aeneas2020's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Did our first 4-man SAS coop tonight, and the reskins were really popular! I'll be churning out a ton of those SAS missions now ^^ -
Do cannon shells bounce in real life?
Inkompetent replied to maturin's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
The tracer rounds on the A-10 are HEI-T rounds (High Explosive Incendiary - Tracer) while the rest are armour piercing (at least IRL. Not working like that in game due to engine limitations). But yes, HE shells should detonate without ricochets unless fired at a very low angle, in which case they could bounce off without the fuze actually hitting anything. Not sure if the Hind actually use any HE ammo in the Yak-B gatling gun though, or if it's all standard ball or armour piercing ammunition. My guess would armour piercing to carry through a good effect on soft targets at decent distance. -
I can also testimony for the severe and sudden FPS drop. I was playing Trial by Fire just to try things out, and between the village and the airfield I suddenly dropped from about 25 to 7 FPS, and remained there for 20-30 seconds before it went back to normal again. No idea what part of SLX causes it though. EDIT: Testing around a bit it seems like it is SLX_Wounds that is causing the severe lag spikes. Even with only a couple of soldiers on an otherwise empty map, wounding them with hand grenades brought my FPS down to single digits. Removing SLX_Wounds removed the FPS-problem.

In game-technical terms all gun positions in a vehicle are crew (gunner) positions, unfortunately. A flaw of the engine we'll have to live with.

off line mission - single player game ?
Inkompetent replied to radon's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Well, the game does have a campaign and a few additional single player missions on the side, that it is shipped with. Quite a lot of user-made single player missions as well to download :) -
Actual real life cockpit bullet protection for helicopter pilots

I'd love to see the weight issues when having 30cm+ thick armoured glass all around the canopy ^^ -
Nice! Quite a patch log, Solus! Will make sure to test it tonight :)

Indeed the current engine is the best this far in its genre, but that's not to say that improvements aren't needed. I just hope that ArmA2 proved popular enough to make it worth making an ArmA3, even if it'll take until 2015 to get there with other BIS-games in between :)

Multiplayer - Invalid CD Key
Inkompetent replied to BlackEye1's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Well, the stores got to live too you know. Prices are really pushed as it is with quite small margins. If they threw away all returned games I think it'd leave a quite noticable dent in their budget. Then of course cases happen like this thread is about, but not everyone returning games is dishonest, and I'm sure many of the returned and resold games works perfectly. Always some people that get to bite the sour apple though :( -
Actual real life cockpit bullet protection for helicopter pilots
Inkompetent replied to wasserkool's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
PKs and AK-47s eats bricks for breakfast. Even the solid clay ones instead of those flimsy, brittle cinderblocks. Period. It doesn't take very many rounds to break up a fist-sized hole in a double-layer clay-brick wall with a PK or M240 machine gun, when firing at shorter (short enough to be able to put the rounds at the same spot) ranges. Then of course the AK-47's rounds loses energy quite fast, so you probably aren't punching through the brick walls at 500m, but at 150-200m I'd be scared shitless against one, even if behind a wall. Also, thanks to those that actually have a clue about helicopter canopies and resilience and war mahinery, and can inform those still under the illusion of epic war tales and war material manufacturer commercials. :P -

I hope you either mean really, really worthless and clueless players, or just like to daydream? :P -
Can I run a mod folder and the latest beta patch?
Inkompetent replied to arthur666's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I can see two major errors in that. First, the beta MUST be loaded before other mods, secondly you aren't using the beta executable. It should look like -
UK Special Forces V1.1
Inkompetent replied to Aeneas2020's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Ohhh, I love them even more than the Close Protection Units! SAS/SBS-missions! Here I come! :D -
Well, we'll see. ArmA2 seem to have gone quite well, but I understand if they want a break after 10 years of OFP/ArmA. Maybe a 5 year break with other games and they'll be back at it again :D
-
I'm not sure how Armaholic decides that, really. Some addons *do* need a certain version number or higher due to using script commands not previously available. Most addons aren't though (heck, some don't even use scripts at all).
-
It depends on the mods. Some should work perfectly, some will be depending on content that isn't included in the demo and thus won't work.
-
IRL they have an identical gun mount on both helicopters. The gun is slewed both manually, or automatically when the pilot has a target locked.
-
Ohhhh, that's some lovely amount of detail!
-
ArmA DOES need an engine upgrade, but it might take two years to code a new engine (two very expensive years), and its first iteration will probably have a lot of youth-issues, and that's even assuming they scrap backwards compatability with addons and mods for the current engine. We'll see after Carrier Command. Maybe that engine will be so brilliant that it won't need much change to work in an ArmA3. Future will tell.

WIP: Stuff you are working on 2!

Looking nice! Any chance you could increase the visibility/contrast of terrain height numbers as well, since they are kind'a hard to see in forest and towns? -
Restrict muzzle flash in Night Missions
Inkompetent replied to Jocktamson's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
That's a modding/config problem rather than a scripting one, I'm afraid. As rstratton says only way out in mission-making is to use silenced weapons to get rid of the big flash. -
Community Armour Systems Project(s) - CASP
Inkompetent replied to PhilippRauch's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Sounds like things really are getting somewhere with CASP. Really glad to hear! We are many who'd love a more proper armour simulation since these current BF2-tanks aren't really much to cheer for ^^ -
A.C.E. Advanced Combat Environment Mod 2
Inkompetent replied to sickboy's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Different rounds are good for different things. Simple as that. 7.62x39mm is only effective out to 300-400m. After 400m the bullet drop is so severe it's getting hard to hit anything, and after 500m it is outright impossible, even if the weapon could fire the round straight enough. Also, at 300m a 7.62x39mm fired from an AK-47 has pretty much equal kinetic energy as a 5.56x45mm fired from an M16, the 7.62 losing energy FAST (amount of propellant vs bullet weight), while the 5.56 can retain it much better. Not going to argue about effectiveness of impact though since we have different bullet shape, diameter, construction and mass, but it can give a hint about why different rounds are good for different things. All in all the ACE1 system was good as far as damage and penetration can be considered. It was AI getting up like nothing had happened when they regained conciousness that was a problem, and that I bet is what most people are interested in how it is solved, not whether bullet penetration or damage is perfectly spot on considering to source X, source Y or source Z, or a mix of the three.
