PC Discussion Thread II - All PC related discussion goes here.

Just any LCD screen really. If your DVD drive has a IDE-connector (broad, flat cable with 22 wires or something in it) and not a SATA (flat, stiffer, and much smaller than IDE) one you would need to make sure there is an IDE-port on the motherboard. Most new motherboards do have one IDE-port though, but better safe than sorry. -
CBA: Community Base Addons for A2, OA and CO
Inkompetent replied to killswitch's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Guess it is because the way in which the game loads the main menu, stepping through the exact same process as when loading a mission, making CBA trigger. If someone would want to make changes to the main menus of the game I guess it'd be appreciated that it does though, however :) -
CBA: Community Base Addons for A2, OA and CO
Inkompetent replied to killswitch's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
@ kylania The splash screens from CBA are there not to mess up the game. When a splash screen is active the 'game' pauses and gives 100% of the game's resources to scripts that might need to be run. It is necessary for some CBA features like pre-init code (if I recall the correct name) to complete running before entering the briefing screen. -
Free view and Aim (infantry only)
Inkompetent replied to SPC.Spets's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
I like the idea a lot. And indeed just limit the speed of the body-turn to the dexterity-value of the weapon. Would make any kind of combat feel more dynamic since you can then walk around with weapon at safe or low ready, scanning the environment, and if you see something quickly raise your weapon to point to where you are looking. Much faster response time. As it is now one basically has to hit cover first, because it takes too long to reaquire the target after releasing free look. -
Ahh.. Was hard to judge from the image. And well... if it comes to hex editing I can say at once that I won't/can't fix it. Never done it. And do not intend to learn. Modelling and texturing isn't my thing, so if it's not very basic it's over my head :)

CM Operation Flashpoint 3 announced | "Oops, they're doing it again..."
Inkompetent replied to Undeceived's topic in OFFTOPIC
Heh. Yeah. That indeed was really spot on. But when someone is playing as dirty as Conmasters it is obvious that they silence people telling the truth. -
Thanks for all your hard work Solus, and enjoy your break :)

CM Operation Flashpoint 3 announced | "Oops, they're doing it again..."
Inkompetent replied to Undeceived's topic in OFFTOPIC
Indeed so. It is much more about Conmasters not caring about their players, even alienating them, having lost all kind of integrity as a company, and just are money-milking douchebags, than it is about the Operation Flashpoint franchise. As nettrucker says it doesn't matter how good the game becomes. A company that outright takes a dump on its customers and scams them again and again shouldn't get to sell anything. Simple as that. Heck, it's like SC2. It might be a great game, but I won't buy it simply because it'd put money in ActivisionBlizzard's pockets, and considering how they currently are treating their customers they shouldn't get any money either. -
Zeus AI Combat Skills
Inkompetent replied to Protegimus's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
@ Polar Bear AI units are always local to what computer is commanding them. If the AI is not in a squad in which a player is the leader, then the AI is controlled by the server (and thus given Zeus AI properties). In player-lead squads the AI is local to the squad-leading player's machine, thus not benefiting from the Zeus AI mod on the server. Even if you would run a client-side eventhandler that spawns AI soldiers they are created globally (i.e. created on the server and all other client machines as well, otherwise no one else would ever see them), and the server will be the machine controlling them unless they are put under player squad-command. -
Yeah. Sentry is really awesome. Hold until spotted units are identified, then move, which coincides with the starting of a firefight due to game design. Simply rocks :)

Please don´t Dominate the Arrowhead...
Inkompetent replied to synti's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - MULTIPLAYER
Correction: EVERYTHING is played piss-poorly by the public. -
Thanks for the update on the OA/CO state of my addon (less than a week now though for me to return to my computer!). Not certain how much I can do about that RPG-18 issue though, because it probably has to do with its GeoLod which I need to be able to open the model for. Don't think I can fix the issue therefore, but I'll look into it.

It is. It is a huge joke. And everyone aside from Conmasters get it. They take it fully seriously though, and are going to make the game that way. -
Players should NEVER have to install add-ons
Inkompetent replied to polar bear's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
My bad for writing 'gaming community' in the last sections. I meant the modding community. Since if the bandwidth issues become too big for servers they'd stop hosting missions requiring the new fancy unit packs, and the incentive to make those packs would undoubtedly decrease since at least some of the motivation is in the number of downloads and appreciation posts. To let the method of download be configurable by the admin sounds like a good solution though, as long as a method for automatic choosing among a whole range of servers is well supported (like SixUpdater), to make sure downloads are attainable even if one or more servers aren't reachable at the moment. The only bit left then for such a feature imo would be to cover at least a part of the bandwidth costs. One can't expect hosting a community service to pay for its own ukpeep, but at least the hole in the wallet can be reduced :) -

Heavily Improved Damage Model System? Is that the same as removing the God-shield around the player mayhaps? -

Inkompetent replied to polar bear's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
But who would host the addon? Would it be like SixUpdater is now, with multiple mirrors where it just picks any available (user-hosted) mirror to download addons, or should it force the server one joins to upload the crapton of data making ten people connecting exceed the entire month's bandwidth? And if the former case, then how will those user-hosted servers cope with the bandwidth costs of increased pressure on their servers (within their own limitations of course, since they'll need stricter bandwith limits) and lack of advertisement revenue since the traffic on their advertisement-money-generating websites will drop dramatically? Or should we allow the hosts to display advertisement in-game to get paid with to make their server-funding easier, depending on what mirror is picked for the download? Or will a big part of the gaming community die because it stops hosting of addons on a larger scale because it becomes too expensive, so we end up running vanilla-versions just because of the terrible download speeds when joining a server with too few hosting the files and at strictly limited bandwidth per connection? With addons the size of unit and sound packs in ArmA2/OA it isn't a *that* easy puzzle to solve. There are a lot of small addons - yes. But there are also a lot of 100+ MB size addons, and those can quickly make the costs for servers run amok. -

This'll end with all new Blizzard-games though, since there's no 'big money' in it, and thus Activision won't be interested, and if Activision isn't interested then ActivisionBlizzard isn't interested, so Blizzard employees will have to code those patches in their free time, or when Blizzard can spare coders that at the moment aren't needed on stuff to actually earn money on. ActivisionBlizzard's whole purpose is to earn more money than any other entity in the world of gaming. This means doing stuff for charity, good reputation and happy customers isn't in the business plan. The whole merge between Vivendi and Activision explicitly states that earning more money than anoyone else is the sole purpose, and this far Activision and Mr. Kotick (sorry everyone for cursing!) has done a grand job at alienating their customer base and earning money, or preparing to earn money. -

So we get to choose between one game made by Codemasters, and one released by Activision, being so awesomely unique they come in different boxes and with different titles. Yay.:icon_ohmygod: -
Was as I supposed with the Typhoon then. One can't just slap on a hook to make it able to not crumble into scrap metal when hitting a carrier. And if UK produces a decent part of the actual airplanes it does too sound like a fully good reason not to abandon it. The industry need to be kept running.

So we'll get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with 4-player COOP? Why can't they say that at once, without all the gibberish? -

Blufor because I'm more comfortable with the iron sights of the M4/16 and the existance of the Humvee, and I like transport helicopters with open doors. But of course, a nice AKM or AKS might sway me to OPFOR.

I agree about that (some) competition would be nice. I already think BIS is doing a good job, so dunno how much of a harder time I'd want to get them. On the other hand competition might - if nothing else - trigger some new inventions or features to stay on top. The quoted text however. No. Just no. Even if we totally disregard from that FPDR carried the Operation Flashpoint brand the business ethics of Codemasters is so terrible (the fact Sion Lenton isn't skull-marked in the entire game development world is a good show of that. One doing his job that poorly at a that high position shouldn't get away. At all) that they don't deserve peoples' money. Period. By giving them money anyway we encourage them to keep their terrible act up of killing what is good with gaming, just like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts. Looking away from such facts is what keeps the corporate asshattery of the destruction of the gaming world afloat. I welcome some competition, but it should bloody not come from Codemasters. -
There are. But how much money did USA have to borrow from China to afford them? They are purchased with money that will never ever be possible to pay back. And even USA had to cancel its orders and not buy any more of them because they are too expensive. But then again *someone* needs to fly them at a decent scale for it to have been worth the development money. After all billions of dollars poured into the project they HAD to buy some for themselves to get some value for the money. Ohh, right. I thought I had read something about that, but was currently too lazy to look it up. Thanks :)

Sounds reasonable. The F-22 and F-35 are fantasy-projects anyway. More a proof of concept, and technology research. A lot has come out of the programs, and I bet a lot of it will be used to modernize current production-line aircraft and aid in the development of newer ones, but in the end a plane can't really be sold if no one can afford it. The F/A-18 is one of the absolutely best aircraft in the world as it is, and for a much, much more affordable prize. Good move. The obvious downside would be that the Hornet is no STOL-aircraft for a country with no fleet of full-size aircraft carriers (?).
