Now, this was one of the fixes listed on the official troubleshooting msg, but only as a link to a web page with tons of other fixes I checked this link http://www.viahardware.com/686bfaq.shtm and found out about the ACPI fix, which is the mode your whole system functions in, its a WinXP problem. Anyways, on the webpage they said disabling it may help. So I did as they said in the last suggestion which is to go in device manager / computer, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and updated those drivers to standard PC. Be warned, upon reboot, winxp will have to reinstall all the drivers for all your hardware, it is mostly automatic if most of your drivers are known by windows XP. After that, NO MORE CRASHES!! I used to crash every 10-15 minutes which stopped me from playing OFP. Also the crackling noise with soundblast live stopped, I still get some pops here and there, but no more huge constant static when hearing engine noises The crashes I used to have were crash to desktop or reboot. here are my system specs AMD tbird 1.33ghz Epox 8k7a motherboard with via 686b southbridge (the troublesome factor) 512 DDR ram Gforce3 Asus (Dont get the lastest det drivers, they crash, get something like 28.32 nvidia drivers) So this fix may be applicable to those who have problems and have same southbridge as me Enjoy! (im happy I fixed the damn bug! I CAN PLAY!

This is mostly for multiplayer, but can work also for single player. Often I would go in ambush along the roads most used by enemy vehicles, but to destroy a vehicle, it takes a rocket launcher. Currently, the maximum you can carry is 4 LAWs with 1 extra magazine or 1 rocket of any other kind and 3 extra magazines. This makes it enought only to destroy 1 heavy armor vehicle with the 4 LAWs only, or 4 light vehicles if you took the LAWs. Most of the time, the Strella or AT4 wont do it against a heavy armor tank. Then what? You are there, far away from your base. Even if you brought a jeep and hid it, it still takes a lot of time to get some ammo and come back. You could bring a heavy ammo truck, but those things are slow, clumsy and not easy to hide. Here is what I would really love to see. The capability to load light vehicles like Jeeps, HMMVs or any other vehicles used for transportation only to be able to carry a certain ammount of ammunition. It would work like a tank or chopper rearms. You drive to an ammo box and from the car you chose what you want to put inside. Then you can go out there in the wild, ambushing the enemy with somewhat a closer, limited, supply of ammo. This could also help a lot in team playing as people would rather hang around the jeeps so more players would use them instead of the usual Chopper Crash Respawn thing. Think about it, its realistic as a car can actualy carry stuff, it gives a bit more of a use to those light transportation units and the need to preserve them and makes it more fun to actualy ambush other than camp a base with ammo crates. It would give a whole new meaning to mechanized squadrons, they will actualy have grunts with them that can keep up with the action!

Paratroopers were first introduced during ww2. First used by the germans. The technique was to pass over the LZ with carrier planes and drop lines of soldiers. The huge flaws of this strategy were that the soldiers couldnt carry all their equip as parachutes couldn't handle it so they had to find the chuted crates of ammo, the spread of the troops was too much, some would fall way off LZ, fall in trees, fall in water and drown (First german attempt anyone?) and get disorganized. Also, the ground troops could shoot them as the paratroopers were weaponless. The meaning of airborne troops changed with the introduction of choppers. Soldiers arent chuted anymore, they are dropped directly on the land with the choppers. The soldiers carry all their ammo, are all bunched up, and land exactly were needed. Now in OFP, every paratrooper attemps you see in multiplayer and most of single player are parachuted troops off CHOPPERS!!! I mean WHAT THE HELL. I havent hear of parachuting off choppers in the military. This is way too easy for teams to drop their soldiers. Since you get chuted with all your equipment (unrealistic) and don't really care to be with or without your group and cant get shot from below (unrealistic), parachuting is perfect and unstoppable. Do this, remove the parachutes in choppers. If a chopper wants to insert troops, they better learn to land! as it is, newbies can transport anyone anywhere, no one knows how to land the damn thing. Multiplayer allows chopper respawn anyways =P Air vehicle kills are nearly impossible for ground troops as the choppers can just quickly pass high above ur head, they never land, try to shoot a chopper flying 100m above ground, going at 250km/h with a AA!!! Force them to land like they do in every real wars. (Where they can get shot, makes it even more dangerous and thrilling) If a chopper is shot down, make the engine sustain for a little while so the pilot can do a control crash (Anyone seen Black Hawk Down? They didnt have chutes! and makes piloting ever more perilous. OF is about realism and danger, right now, airborne troops are ww2 strategy off post-ww2 vehicles into a post-ww2 warfare. Force pilots to learn to land fast, make the game even more skillful, or at least, make the no-chute option for veteran mode and let the newbies chute off in cadet mode.

As stated in my first post, here is what I dont like about being able to chute "Air vehicle kills are nearly impossible for ground troops as the choppers can just quickly pass high above ur head, they never land, try to shoot a chopper flying 100m above ground, going at 250km/h with a AA!!! Force them to land like they do in every real wars. (Where they can get shot, makes it even more dangerous and thrilling)" I guess I should rewrite the "every real wars" by "most of the time"

laser sight scope? isnt there already some XM#### weapon, a m14 with a scope which when u zoom with it, the crosshair is just a little red dot? which i presume is a laser sight, otherwise how would laser sights work in OFP?

Ok, ok, then parachuting off choppers has been used and still is for special operations, everything planned, trained troops for it. For OFP, you have all those people just jumping on the chopper for a quick lift and magicaly they find an infinite supply of chutes (Ok, I know ammo crates also have infinite ammo) and are all trained and skill to jump off with chutes no matter their class and how much amunition they carry, can drop from 60m, going at 250km/h without a scratch? Please, this is ridiculous, the way u guys talk about people chuting off choppers are planned operations with a few selected soldiers.. OFP is everyone. USSoldier, my use of BHD was just an example, i know the movie is somewhat fictif even if "Based" on a true story, but the tactics were realistic and if everyone in the choppers had chutes all the time in every mission, then the movie wouldnt have been the same now would it? Heck, when a chopper's engine is bust in the air, they usualy try to use the rotor's current spin to do a control crash, not eject, and I know that from those documentaries u see on History channel

i dont get why when it comes to EAX problem with OFP, we blame Creative Labs. I have many other games and every single one of them support EAX and surround sound and every single one of them WORKS! No crackles&pops, no screwed up distance sounds. Now OFP is the only one doing this to my system... so why is it Creative Labs whose drivers work for the other games should be blamed to not work on OFP's already bad sound engine, SB live! or not?

the germans were not the first to invent it, but they were the first to use it in actual combat
-
Sorry DayGlow, i should have been more specific =P Nowadays, the airborne troops are mostly used in chopper landings because there hasnt been any use for wide scale airplane parachuting, but of course, the airborne troops are still being trained to use parachutes. But my whole point again was that in OFP, it shouldnt be =P LordZach, thats the whole point, danger at landing. it is dangerous to go in with a land vehicle, from fear of LAWs or mines. It should also be a danger for choppers to go in enemy territories.
-
DayGlow, the only times using paratroopers with fixed wing airplanes are in huge strategical attacks, meaning involving hundreds of troops with a front line. Look at OFP, there arent that many soldiers involved. Most of the time, you would send 2-5 soldiers in the same LZ, dont tell me you need to chute them? There arent fixed wing airplanes for carrying troops in OFP because there arent that many soldiers going in the same area. Just 1 chinook is enought to carry a platoon in combat which is a big enought number for OFP missions. Tell me, when was the last time they used parachuted soldiers in an actual war? Not a military practice, i know they still parachute in those.

damn, i hope it wont be for resistance only but for OFP original MP also =D Yeah im buying resistance, but not every server will run it

149 - Each time you see wooden boxes on the ground, you walk up to them wanting to know if you can get a few LAWs 150 - When you hear static on the radio, you think its because of your Sound Blaster Live! 151 - You are scared shitless when on a road in a town or in the open field, so you lay down low 152 - When you hear the sound of metalic snails "from possible construction tracktors" you automaticly take out your LAW and find a bush. 153 - When in any building, you are afraid to get stuck in the walls 154 - You think that every unknown vehicles want to run over you (Multiplayer trick to kill the enemy) 155 - You don't believe that grass has a form other than flat 156 - Your arms always move after you move your head 157 - If you dont have something in your hands, you run slowly 158 - Seeing many vehicles slows down your eye's FPS 159 - You make sure the choppers passing over your head wont crash on you 160 - You don't feel safe in any vehicles with windows.

divx is a high video compression which beats all standard types like .mov or .avi or whatever The TOP best which requires about a day of compression per hour to make is SVCD which is dvd quality and tiny space taking so it can be shared over the net quickly
-
Looks great and all, but the video quality doesn't allow us to see the full resolution of the game. Why can't people make divx or svcd demos? I mean the quality compression(1 hour movie almost = dvd quality = 750mb) is awsome and its free to get a viewer software. As for the expansion, what Id really like to see is a huge fix on the engine. Collision detection for now is awful for buildings, id like to be able to fight inside big buildings and get out of them in the open field. The SOUNDS!! *input a few curses* I mean sounds helps a lot to feel INTO the game. As it is for now, it sucks on SB Live! which most people have (I know its SB's bad drivers, but I dont see why OFP is the only game bugging like this on XP) The surround positioning is also awful, I mean you can't rely on sounds to guess how far a vehicle is, you hear people running loudly while they are 100m away from you! Those would be great pluses along with that new network coding which I hope will make every objects NOT warp around and impossible to shoot =P Otherwise, I love OFP, its everything I wanted in a game, except the thin spread of players over the huge maps for MP =D

One thing that bothers me when it comes to thrilling rides in my chopper when I pass over 3 enemy shilkas at low altitude is how much punch a chopper can take while staying stable. I mean, for now all it is is a chopper flying perfectly until the last bullet that shut its engine off. Id like to see, maybe in Resistance expansion, diffrent stages of damage to choppers and other vehicles. lets say after 20% of armor loss, your chopper becomes less responsive to your controls. After 30% it starts shaking and smoking, after 40% your rudders are unstable and your chopper starts going in directions you dont want it to go For vehicles, like a jeep, truck, it could be vulnerable to bullets other than the tires, so if you shoot the engine, it will smoke and eventualy shut down after a mile or 2 For tanks, well it already smokes and have its stages. I think it would be a lot more interesting to be the pilot of a chopper being shot at, dont you think so? It doesnt need any new hit boxes, only stages of damage related to the armor. This subject must have been discussed before, but i dont feel like trying every word combo possiblities in the search engine =P

I think its the case for combat choppers as well.. I dont know if you noticed, but when u embark a combat chopper, their machine gun turret is always pointing to the side, kind of sucks to have to get in gunner seat to adjust it first then go back to pilot
-
lol hehe I had a similar bug, on a map with 2 small islands, we would have a combat chopper that respawns.. well each time it respawned, it respawned crashed, but i was the only one able to make it work. My friends were seeing me fly a smoking piece of metal in the air =P lol the roters werent even moving and you could see a ball of smoke go by too bad I got no screenshots

Ive had this crappy old thrusmaster standard, only a 2 axis 4 button thing Now ive been mostly playing a ground soldier, but ive started an interest in air transport, you know, getting the troops into place with choppers? Ive had trouble with my current joystick, like using some buttons for move up and down, but wont work as well as the keyboard, or having to turn around, there is no pivoting axis for the rudders on the joystick, and of course, the smoothness =P So what are your suggestions for a nice nifty joystick to fly choppers? thanks!

Ive been browsing through the forums, used search feature. Â I could only find reports of problems similar to mine, but no fixes to those reports. Here is my system specs firstly AMD Tbird 1.33ghz 266fsb EPoX 8k7a motherboard (yeah a VIA mobo) Asus Gforce3 Deluxe 2 x 256 DDR Crucial 60g Maxtor HDD SB Live! Value Windows XP pro Now, I used to not play a lot of OFP before because online just sucked, but after a few months of playing Day of Defeat, Ive went back to OFP for fun and well, wow, lagless gaming online! WOW I love it again =P But a problem has been haunting me, ruining my pleasure, the crash to desktop problem, also the reboot one. My first reaction to this was, format. My computer needed it, so I formated everything, installed the VIA 4in1 drivers for XP, installed all lastest drivers for sound card and video card and well, still the same problem. The only temp fix ive found was going back to the basic native windows drivers for my video card, technicly, the ones Windows XP installs by default for Gforce3 cards. The tips given on the official Trouble Shooting forum didnt work, like reducing my AGP rate to 1x/2x The frame rate is less stable than nuclear jello, Direct 3D HW &TL or just Direct 3D. Â I prefered the newer Nvidia drivers, but they crash randomly in every game. Â The native drivers almost never crashes, but still do after a long period of time. My system is flawless, its perfect to the very last wire, ok, I know Windows XP is quite the party crasher, but I need it. Â All my other games running on Direct 3d or OpenGL run flawlessly at capped FPS with my demand of to the graphic card than you can imagine (Considering I run the lastest Nvidia Drivers, which I can't) So here is my question to you fellow OFP Troubleshooting junkies =P Â What is your suggested fix? EDIT : While im at it, any fix for the poping screetching noise created by vehicles with SB live! other than going to 3rd person than back? The server I play on doesnt allow 3rd person view.

Well I formated my comp, went back to Fat32 partition, installed my old win98se. Installed via 4in1 drivers, installed 28.32 nvidia, installed lastest sound drivers, installed critical windows patches, installed OFP I still crash, this time it just freezes, doesnt reboot not go back to desktop.. only crashes with sound in a loop! WTF! IM PISSED! =(((((((((((( this never used to happen when I played 4 months ago on the same computer =(
-
well Ive tried 23.11 and 28.32 drivers for the second time each and both failed to work properly, only the native windows drivers, and even them sometimes crash. I think ill just install Win98 on my computer and run it instead of WinXP when I want to play. Do you guys know how to make Win98 work as a second OS option along with WinXP? Like when I boot the computer, it asks me if I want 98 or XP? I only have one partition btw, so I dont know how 98 runs in NTSF HDD format
