This book is most probably the ONLY real resource a person has when considering joining the Legion. I have searched far and wide for info on what joining is like and about, this is the only thing that I ever found. Even in the book, he tells that he decided to write the book due to the lack of information out there.
-
Yeah, I have a copy of the book. It's called "Life in the French Foreign Legion, what it's like and what to expect once you get there". Written by Evan McGorman, ex-Legionnaire. It's a very detailed description, even instructions to anyone interested in joining the Legion.
-
You're an American. Why not join the US Marines? Or the French Foreign Legion if you are desperate enough?
-
Ok, I saw a thread below about someone who was trying to decide whether to join the Navy or Army. This leads me to some other questions that I am curious about, who has the toughest/well trained combat unit in the U.S. military. I know the Marines are tough, but are they really that much tougher/well trained than for example Army infantry? What about Army Special Forces? Can an Army grunt later join the Marines/vice verca? What about in the Navy?

I think they all transferred to the reserve component though.<span id='postcolor'> Thanks Cloney, exactly what I wanted to know. But is that Army or Marines?
-
Ok, people, I know everyone loves talking about Special Forces because they're so fascinating and all, but please no more "special forces" talk. I'm talking about regular soldiers.

My cousin was in the Army for about 6 years, and is still in there. But he recently requested to be transferred to the Air Force, and qualified for para-rescue or Spec Ops. And one of my Army recruiters used to be in the Marines before he joined the Army. So, it is possible to change branches. And in most cases, i believe, you can even keep your rank from the previous branch.<span id='postcolor'> Pins, if you change branches, then do you have to do the new branches "Basic training" even though you have already prior service? It seems strange to me that you would see (for example) a 30 year old Navy SEAL going to Parris Island to do basic training with a bunch of 19-21 year olds when changing services to become a Marine.

My escape was a little more realistic. I waited in the tent til night, then I jumped into the BMP, ran over everyone in a blind panic. Drove as far down the road as I could get before I ditched it in a ditch, and then ran the rest of the way back.
-
Ok, along the lines of regular infantry who is tougher, or has better training? Army, or Marines? I always hear about Marines having much more intensity than Army grunts. In my mind it seems that compared to Marines, Army soldiers are kindof not so well trained. Kindof more or less just cannon fodder.

I mean units that are NOT special forces. Just regular combat units. Like Marines MEU, or Army Paracommandos etc. I dunno.
-
Yeah, is it true that soldiers and Marines can switch beteen the Army and Marines? I heard that once, I didn't think that was realistic.
-
Yeah, I hear alot about Marines being a tough force. What about the Army, they have any tough units other than Rangers or Special Forces? Now that I think about it, what IS the Army used/known for? Marines are the combat people. So what does the Army do?

Being a big M.A.S.H. fan, let me have a go at the correct answer. It's simply B.J. as in the letter B, and J. His Dad's name was J, and his mom's name was B. That's it.

Which brings me to another question. How many of you actually laugh in real life when you type in "LOL" in computers. I think "LOL" means "laugh out loud". So I only type it in if the thing that is funny actually made me laugh.

You liked Houlihan?? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! She doesn't so look hot to me. Â Me? Â I dunno. Â I don't think I come close to ANY member on the show, Hawkeye is the closest I guess. Â But only in a few aspects. Â And you forgot Father Mulcahey- Naive yet intelligent, but good hearted, and willing to lead a simple life.

Well, was it a muslim prayer as opposed to a Christian one?

It's false patriotism. Not patriotism. Trust me.

It's a matter of anti Frenchism, and stupidity.

Yea, I really think this is just a temporary naming though. I mean, it IS temporary, right?
-
Yeah, I think because the English accent makes it harder for them to try to speak French. Since us Americans have don't have an accent(except for southerners and New Englanders) it is easier for us to try new languages.

How many times in your life have you went out to grab some french food, or some French drink. Â How many times have you been to a McDonalds or drank a coke?<span id='postcolor'> I cerainly eat more French food then American. I do however have a weakness for Coke And don't underestimate the French stubbornness and national pride. Unlike most of Europe the French have never liked the American influence (or intrusions if you will) in their culture. They don't watch much American TV, don't go much to McDonalds. A prime example of that is the EuroDisney in Paris (Disneyland) that has been an economic fiasco since the day they opened. A French boycott of USA is actually more plausible then vice versa since Americans are more facinated by making money then the French are. And believe it or not, the French can be damn stubborn when it comes to matters of national pride.<span id='postcolor'> While I do understand that MANY MANY french people HATE american food and American culture. (It seems that it is a part of French culture to criticize American culture) MANY young people in HighSchool and College like Americans, drink Pepsi, Coke, and DO eat at McDonalds. They even have their own "French" version of McDonalds called "Quick". I do agree that most adults though, and older folks HATE American culture and fast food(Personally I can't blame them. Gastronomy is one of the few things the French ARE very good at, and proud of) Oh, and how can they call it "American intrusion" if they are the ones who let it into their country? They shouln't be angry at us for that, but at themselves. They don't have to let us in and buy American products. As for EuroDisney, it is doing MUCH better these days just as it's American cousins back here.

What's wrong with the word "sorceror"?
