Amen. I think 2010 is a fine year to set it in, I just hope they don't make all the equipment super modern, sparkling new high-speed Å°bar Special Delta Rainbow shit. We have crap like Battlefield 2 for that.
-
Uuh read it again, it says no such thing, it says that you are deployed as part of an international coalition contingent. It does say that you are part of a 'team' but that could mean anything. If you really played as a special operator they would have made it clear, as it now stands they emphasized the huge dynamic missions (not in the press release) and the screenshots show only regular troops in large assaults (You might play as part of a MEU-SOC though ) The SCAR is cool as hell.

Nah, come on guys, the starting post is just a thinly veiled troll. Nothing to see here. I chuckled, though. Today is 2005 and the Russian Federation still has T-62s on active duty IIRC.
-
They don't. They use variants of the Giat FAMAS and some SF use XM177 or M4 carbines, example I think some also use SIG rifles. Those are both Russian camouflage patterns but they resemble the American woodland and DPM a lot. People usually react to it. The DPM is called 'smog' and there are a lot of half-copies of US woodland. They are, in fact, used by some Russian forces, I have seen numerous RL pictures (in the same helmet as in these OFP2 pics btw) but sadly don't have them at hand right now. More: Info page Info page 2 edit: OK I got you some pics, here you go Smog Smog 2 Woodland Woodland 2 Army will probably be using the M8, USMC will probably still use the M16A4 in 2010 but won't likely stick with it for long. It's a bit uncertain ATM. The M-8 and the M-25 (close to OICW) will be standard issue in the future if all goes to plan, nothing really 'special' about it.

Original OFP missions should be compatible and there will be a new campaign. And the OFP1 campaigns CWC and Resistance are BIS' "own".
-
Is that a question? Yes it will have an original campaign. How can anyone know if it's 'worth it' when we don't even know the price and have seen a couple of screenshots, such discussion is fruitless...

Asia is basically half desert, what do you base your knowledge of Asia on, movies!? Check that map out, yeah, nothing but bamboo and panda bears. edit: And you practically live there...

Can someone explain what the 'terrain streaming' optimization means exactly, and what other optimizations would be obvious to add to the age-old OFP1 engine?

Armed Assault - development suggestions to BIS
Gollum1 replied to theavonlady's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
I think people have gotten so used to one part of OFP that they don't remember to complain about it anymore: Reload animations. You can't transfer bullet into the magazine by willpower you know. An animation shouldn't be required, to be compatible with old addons, but it should be able to be defined, and separately for each weapon. -
OFP2 and "armed assault" - what's up?
Gollum1 replied to Cpt. FrostBite's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
That's a new damage model and physics for sure, everything falls into pieces. The 'wheel' shot is a demonstration of this I think, there's a wheel rolling there so it has to have a nice physics engine, there's parts of the Russian plane at the mosque (you can see the wing with the red star in the background) and there is what looks like a blown off tank turret to the right in the picture. Nice. -
Holy crap that looks good, it has that OFP feel yet has totally amazing graphics and a fresh new look. I only hate that 'shine' shader effect even on the canvas on trucks.
-
Amazing. Do you know what gameplay element this opens up? "Leave no witnesses"... excellent move from BIS! You should be able to set a condition like CiviTalks true;false so you can make them talk in different ways if they are reluctant.
-
me too I uploaded the video (RARed) onto Tactical Blunder. It is 23mb. Thanks a lot, that was cool. Do you have the other new VBS videos or know where to get them btw?
-
Look at those trees in the background of the shot at the base on Everon. State of the art! Note the shot of the Black Ops taken from the intro of the Resistance campaign and the new Resistance guy with a fist logo on his cap and arm (I think that seems way too organized btw).
-
I remember that an interview said that the collision bug was already fixed for OFP xbox, that was over a year ago so I'm sure they've fixed it. VBS also has some type of new building destruction mode (Anyone have the video!? PM me please so that should be implemented already. Also the terrain streaming that improves performance, self-shadowing on models and proper shadow casting on objects overall, probably some shader support, maybe 3d clouds as seen in the latest screens (I think), water with waves...these things are all evident in the screenshots. edit: And how could I forget, Join in Play functionality and probably reworked netcode.

Armed Assault - should the name be changed?
Gollum1 replied to theavonlady's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
I don't think BIS wants to taint the VBS military brand name with regular consumer-oriented games... I really don't like the name Armed Assault, it WILL be confused with America's Army which is played by the same group of gamers, military simulation players! Very poor choice in this sense, IMO. Besides that it sounds very boring. Armed Assault, what, as opposed to Unarmed Assault? Too bad that you can't use Combined Arms, it would really capture the spirit of the game. After the press release and 6 months from release I suspect this is set in stone, what can I say, unfortunate but still not that big a deal. -
Armed Assault - development suggestions to BIS
Gollum1 replied to theavonlady's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Well, what can I say, some realistic suggestions,: - Better, much more versatile AI that is for example: - skilled in air support (helos engaging infantry properly!) - much quicker at reacting and moving ESPECIALLY in towns and close quarters. - is able to take cover and not go prone and run around like an idiot! - A LOT more options for AI behaviour in the editor. - Light grass everywhere like in the Xbox screens, not flat, textured surfaces. - Collision detection fix - Collapsable buildings - Better damage model, damage types for different weapons! Vehicles being disabled more instead of blown up, killing everyone inside. - Multiple gunner positions - 3D iron sights - Some simple, standard integrated artillery system. - A good set of basic, unmarked, extremely common equipment like BTRs, BMPs, M113s, just the most common Warsaw Pact and NATO equipment. - More realistic effects, not Hollywood explosions. - Hard, BADASS sounds, not pathetic flops like the FALs and G3s in Resistance have. -

OFP2 and "armed assault" - what's up?
Gollum1 replied to Cpt. FrostBite's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
It IS an xbox screenie, it was named XbE302 and hosted on the official BIS server flashpoint1985.com. Armed Assault seriously looks like a variation of OFP Xbox for PC, with engine fixes and the major difference being a new island? I'm really confused, some things are so contradictory. Like, why does the AA press release say that AA features a 'fresh modern setting' or something like that and in the AA animation one soldier is using an ugly-ass old BIS M60? The M60 was phased out from infantry use in about 2001-2 at the latest. -
OFP2 and "armed assault" - what's up?
Gollum1 replied to Cpt. FrostBite's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Maybe not on that one but on other pictures that look similar to that one there is one that seems to take place in the forest overlooking Morton. This one . Problably not a exact replica but changes should be expected, especialy if you played and are familiar with the PC version . That's not Morton. That's an unnamed bombed village on Kolgujev. No it isn't. -
See this? That means no Red Hammer, which was made by Codemasters. Resistance and CWC were made by BIS.

OFP2 and "armed assault" - what's up?
Gollum1 replied to Cpt. FrostBite's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
It's a fresh viewpoint, but releasing pics of an expansion when the game is a year from release is a bit unlikely I think. You're right that there might be some connection to IL, as you said it was USMC too (there is no AH-1W in these new pics btw)...BI Australia's guys might have influenced the time setting and unit choice, they have done those units before. The whole IL game in whatever state it was in is unusable now I assume, everything was made for the OFP1 engine with OFP1 standards. My guess is they postponed it for the OFP2 engine due to tech limitations or not wanting to release another OFP1 expansion. It could also have been merged with OFP2. If you recall, the time setting of OFP was changed from 1970's to modern day (The old VTV network TV -> the plasma TV and talk of modern war on terror). But these can't be pics from IL as we know it, IL was officially set in Indonesia and those pics are a bit too dusty for Indonesia I think The Armed Assault animation on flashpoint2.com, the grainy 1985 pics, is Ofp Xbox with a new name. It IS on a separate channel, it's 'another program from BIS', it didn't replace channel 1, just make it temporarily out of order. Go to ofpec.com for confirmation, those OFP xbox screens (they were hosted on the BIS server and are named XBE3) show the same soldier model as in the AA animation. Also the Black Op guy is holding an old OFP1 MP5, just like the AA guys are also using OFP1 weapons and vehicles. In summary, Ofp:Elite (old xbox title) is now apparently Armed Assault. My guess is that OFP2 will also be renamed, if the Codemasters logo has been pulled from the site and they have to use the new name AA for Xbox for copyright reasons then the name Flashpoint 2 should logically be a no go too. Just take this all as idle speculation, it will all become clear when we hopefully get some official press releases from E3 -
OFP2 and "armed assault" - what's up?
Gollum1 replied to Cpt. FrostBite's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
No, there will be only one universal pattern issued for the Army, the grey/blue one. Hard to believe, I know, but it is confirmed and it is currently being issued to Army units. No desert/wood patterns anymore. Rest assured the camo in these screens, except for the old Woodland camo, is wood and desert MARPAT. The UH-1N helicopter, MARPAT infantry, AAVP7A1 APC and M16A4 rifle are all Marine equipment, but the M1A2, possibly the woodland camo soldier and possibly the HMMWV are Army (The Humvee is missing its snorkel that USMC Humvees usually have). It wouldn't surprise me if they went for a Marine-heavy approach, they're especially in vogue nowadays, for example First to Fight and Battlefield 2 cast Marines as the U.S side. Well, looking at OFP1 everything is far from ultrarealistic and consistent so maybe I'm reading too much into it. Hahaha. Ok.
