He's asking about the irregularity Exactly, anyone have an answer for this? I know A's stand for 'advancement', and M's for 'military' (altough the U.S Army also uses the MK19 grenade launcher, hmm, I thought MK was some kind of Navy designation, but that's a whole new chapter). M1A1 carbine M1A1 AA gun

Yes, I have a question about military terminology, or something close to it. What is it with the U.S military's naming scheme for its equipment? I mean, first look at some common designations during WW2: M1 helmet (?) M1A1 AA cannon M1A1 Thompson M1 grenade (?) M1 rifle M1A1 carbine M1911 pistol M1 bazooka!? What is with all the M1's? What's the point of giving a model name for everything if you can't tell them apart by it? Then some other pieces of equipment can be M4A3 tank etc. Then it gets at least as strange, look at the rifle name progression from the M14 forward: M14 M16 M1773 (carbine) M4 (carbine) M8 And the machineguns: M2 M60 (ALSO the main tank at the time) M249 M240 And now we have the M1A1 Abrams as a naming blast from the past, I mean, by what system is all this equipment named? It seems totally irregular.

Apparently you have not been here.. This is the truth.

On the other hand, the US military was mostly superior in combat and on average inflicted many times more casualties on the VC/NVA than vice versa, having superior training and support and all, so playing as a Vietnamese wouldn't net you many 'kills' in the traditional action game sense (altough a different approach than standard FPS could be realistic and still enjoyable to play). The US won most of the battles but lost the war, and the battles are what games are all about... Also, it's a lot easier for Western gamers to identify with Americans, being mostly the same race with a familiar culture and language. Not to mention catering to the huge American market.

Excellent 20 minute BBC Fallujah video up here It's streaming so I recommend the app WMR80 to record it. Lots of precombat and combat footage from an attached reporter, don't think it's been seen before. Commander: "Satan is in Fallujah", wow, pretty dangerous place for him to be, City of Mosques and all... If I would have been there to hear the Iraqis chanting 'Allahu Akhbar' during that one fight I would have wet myself.

Yeah, and if I want to learn about the U.S I'll watch one of the hundreds of American Vietnam movies, read the endless stream of books, play the games that are so trendy and done to death today, etc. etc, all from the (clichéd) US perspective. Let's not learn anything new once in a while, right? And I find your statement offensive, how does this sound: pps.For those people who wanna learn about the Americans i suggest you read a book, this game is for killing them...

Take out the 'revamped' part (technically true I guess but you'll see), it's basically Half-Life running on the Source engine, so all the models and textures are the same as in the original (REALLY showing their age), not even from the high-definition pack which I guess still belongs to Gearbox that made the Blue Shift expansion. The new stuff is ragdoll, new flashlight and new water, plus a sort of 'shine' effect on certain textures as seen in HL2. HL:S is more aimed at showing modmakers how their HL mods can be converted to HL2, and to be a nice bonus.

Wow, this movie sounds really gay. I already saw Troy.

[rant] Exactly, Far Cry is far more innovative yet HL2 has to be the best reviewed game ever by now. I just don't see what the fuss is about, HL2 combines all kinds of stuff that everyone has seen before, I mean city fighting, Call of Duty did it better, wild vehicle chases, Far Cry did it better and a lot more free, physics, well I commend them on integrating it into the gameplay but I've already played with physics in Max Payne 2, Far Cry, etc. Just my opinion, I'm sure the experience might be different for someone else. The design of the game is very nice, but looks won't get you far, or at least...they shouldn't. Nice one-time scripted events and eye candy aren't the hallmarks of a classic. It's a good game, but I always feel tempted to play the devil's advocate when someone calls it the best game ev4r (like the whole world is doing), which it most certainly isn't, IMO. The game is probably the best rounded and designed HL1-style FPS ever, but that kind of linear, done-before gameplay can only get you so far. [/rant] Will HL2 prove to be ground-breaking in any aspect? I don't see how.

Wow, Parvus. This is one of the best OFP pics I've seen in a long time. The plane just perfects it.

Fixed for sweet sweet truth.

Heheheh, reading those HL2 forums is a good laugh, those kids come up with the most far-fetched "theories". The 'father' rumour got started from a Ravenholm design sketch where there was a text over a walkway: "G-man? (=father?)" It is OBVIOUSLY in reference to Father Grigori appearing as an alternative (as he does in the game), but some decided that the plot writers like to scribble random things about character's personalities on level design sketches and then release them. His father... Besides the mentioned G-man spottings I saw him walk away on a monitor in Nova Prospekt.

More memory won't help your image quality or much at all regarding HL2 for that matter, better go shopping, I suggest a 9800 Pro. I upgraded to 1024 from 512 and it increased overall performance maybe by 15%. Running HL2 on 1024x768, 2x AA, high everything, and still works perfectly on my 9600 XT (2,8 P4, 1024 PC3200)! There are none. I wouldn't call a narrow scripted pipe that interrupts every five minutes to load a "town".

Hmm, maybe Stockholm, Sweden. Sweden is a great place to live with nice climate, standards and...broadband. Plus I speak the language.

Scripted. Only weak things like boxes, chairs, glass etc. (not even doors) are destroyable. edit: Actually I forgot that a row of pillars in two places was collapsed by strider fire. Anyway, I finished it. Pretty fun, worth buying.
-
LMFAO did you not find the woman who gives you the hovercraft The game would have stopped me from progressing if I hadn't so yes, I meant the sequence before that.
-
Bought it this morning, activated/unlocked it fine, been playing all day. It's fun, but...really not that revolutionary. Far Cry was much more innovative IMO. It's really well for the most part) but there's still only one set path...A lot of sections suffer from being too long, after the amazing, exciting start you're left crawling in your bog-standard sewers for an hour with just a pistol for company. I'm about 2/3 through now.

(Apply these faces by putting <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">this setface "faceXX" into a unit's init line, in case you didn't know.) The faces are: face2 face3 face19 face23 face28 face33 face49 -
Finnish Defence Forces Modification 1.3
Gollum1 replied to feersum.endjinn's topic in ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Works great for me, with normal terrain detail and about 1700 viewdistance. Only mission that is really heavy is the FDF Battlefields, ~15 fps no matter what settings I lower 2.8 ghz P4, 1gb PC3200, R9600XT. -
FDF Desert pack Hunter's big anim pack Nice pic Aimpoint.

Finnish Defence Forces Modification 1.3
Gollum1 replied to feersum.endjinn's topic in ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Hey, kickass work as usual FDF team, I like the natural feel of the island and the elevated roads. The Special Jaegers are cool with their headscarves and the like. If someone is interested, here is a promotional video of Finnish Special Forces (Special Jaegers included in this pack and paratroops), Mi-8 and Fokker troopship making guest appearances. 256k stream edit: Why is music in military promos always lame? -
It's because they don't work properly on all cards. I have them enabled but they often disappear a bit randomly, some addons have black tracers (!), they are invisible from some angles and firing a weapon full auto will make them almost invisible except for the very end of their flight, while you can see them properly on semi-auto. Tried both on a Radeon 8500 and 9600. They're still a cool addition.

Lots of other pics at MilitaryMorons...looks quite good.
