  1. Hello all. I am looking for some good winter/snow maps to play in ArmA 2 CO. Currently I am downloading Namalsk and I am wondering if there are any other snow filled/winter maps that I should look into? I am looking for quality maps that preferably have some areas with low vegetation.
  2. It was merely a shortened version with largely the same media minus all of the talking for the lazy types. Many people might look at an 11 minute video and simply pass over it. Though I much preferred it as it did a good job explaining about the game.
  3. I would expect this as well. I believe a game like Rainbow 6 (the old ones), while still complex are a bit easier to jump into than ArmA. Get more people playing Ground Branch and they might eventually come over to ArmA. Likewise, many will start with IL-2 before moving onto complex aircraft like DCS A-10C. And lets keep spreading the word. We always hear about how we want more tactical shooters yet the Kickstarter turnout so far isn't that good. I realize many people, no matter how much they like tactical shooters are not interested in donating up front, but surely there has to be more than a mere 350 or so.
  4. Thanks for reopening it. If this gets the funding it needs, Takedown turns out well, we will have the major areas covered. Small indoor CQC - Takedown Outdoors and CQC - Ground Branch Large, battlefield environments - ArmA 3 We have been sorely missing two of the three for many years. If you have any interest in realistic tactical shooters do drop a pledge or two. Aside from ArmA and Takedown (still has very far to go) there is nothing else in store for the genre.
  5. Going to be donating myself when I get a chance. Keep spreading the word.
  6. The thing that makes the ArmA games somewhat fun to play is the editor. But the layout is very, very dated and antiquated. Simple things that should be done through a GUI must be done through scripts which often don't work. Examples are having certain units/objects destroyed to end the mission. We must manually type in a script. I would much prefer a GUI drop down menu where I can quickly choose that if unit X is destroyed, the mission will end. Or unit Y will spawn. Jane's USAF (1999) and Lock On FC2/DCS Black Shark have such features. Very quick and easy to use. No minimizing, copying, pasting, or typing in countless script after script for what is essentially the most simple thing a mission should have. Likewise, a measurement tool/"ruler" that can measure the distance between any point on a map. ArmA 2 (and I will assume 3) has a powerful mission editor, but you will likely never figure out or even know many of the features exist. I hope this area is improved in ArmA 3 and is given some thought on the layout and incorporating most of the features into a easy to find GUI.

Underwater element. What is the point?

Animations AI Squad command interface Mission editor Sounds More detailed land terrian More time coding other things I'm sure it took a decent amount of time to map the sea floor, make the sounds, add the code, code in the diving equipment and systems, the swimming animations, and more. All for something that will probably be used very little. I'd rather have that put into the infantry, were we will spend 99% of the time anyways.

Underwater element. What is the point?

This is something I did not care for. It is nice, but how many missions will utilize it? Not many. IMO the time/resources could have been put into a large number of areas that would have been used far more.

More GUI, less scripts in the editor.

This would be ideal. I don't mind the script functions being left in there, but there needs to be more GUI. I am amazed at how complex the editor can be when I stumble upon something on a website. But it shouldn't be that way for a lot of features. Ease of usage can go a long way. At its heart ArmA is based on the editor. This is another thing I never understood how to do. I know you can, but after spending countless hours in the editor I never stumbled upon how to write mission briefings (under task, situation, ect.). And to be honest this is something that should be very simple to learn as it was in USAF and as it is in Lock On/DCS. Exactly what I was referring to! If more people can quickly learn how to use the editor to churn out good missions, we'll see more players prop up to play and support the series.
  10. No; it runs horrible for most setups. Only now are PCs getting to the point where you can play it with nice frame rates. Even my GTX 560ti 2GB, AMD 965 and 8GB DDR2 struggles with it. If you have a 570+ and an OCed 2500K it will probably run fine... but these are rather recent hardware. And this is the reason I prefer desert environments in ArmA 2. That being said I do like the map. I just can't get very good frame rates (unless I disable all the grass, but that looks ugly and I might as well be playing in a desert). With the 560ti 2GB it is playable though, but it does frequently drop into the 20-30s at 1680x1050. But the slowdowns are annoying and make identifying targets and reacting quickly considerably more difficult. I do hope ArmA 3 runs better in areas with lots of brush or else I'll need a GTX7** and Intel **** OCed to 7GHZ to max it out. :p
  11. I hope this is the right section for this. I am looking for some single player missions for ArmA 2 CO. I am looking for missions with detailed briefings that are well done. I would also like for them not to require additional maps/mods. Preferably I would like for these missions to be comparable with ACE. Any recommendations? Most of the user made missions I download tend to be MP or have lots of mod requirements. I'm looking for something I can play offline without altering my install further. Thanks in advance.

    Crowdsourced Hardcore Tactical Shooter

This. We have a chance of having a true SWAT/Raven Shield sequel, and if it isn't up to par, at least it can be somewhat decent (one would hope). Not like there is much in terms of tactical shooters on the horizon (ArmA 3, I44 which is essentially ArmA 2 in WWII). Worth the chance for $15 IMO.

He probably didn't notice it. I even thought it was a painting/digital art created from scratch. Now, when you show the real photos side by side it is obvious, but for those of us who are not familiar with photoshop/GIMP/whatever, it is not very obvious by simply looking at it. He paid someone to make concept art, and they more than likely gave him those photos. He probably never saw the originals in his life prior to it being brought up on the forums. Though he did the right thing. He took down the concept art/edited photos, apologized, and took responsibility. No reason to revoke your pledge for what looks like an honest mistake. Though, each to their own.

Remember if you pledged to participate in the forums. A lot of PS3/SOCOM gamers are flooding in there, and their vision of a "tactical shooter" isn't exactly aligned with R6/SWAT. Keep posting, making suggestions and reference features you liked in R6/GR/SWAT that you would like to see in Takedown. Unfortunate about the concept art, but it was the artist that screwed them over. At least he removed it and apologized.

Agreed. Though it is too late to go back now. If they fail there might be another Kickstarter, but I am not sure.

He also updated the text on the kickstarter page. Though he still did not mention some features that will be in the game, like detailed pre-mission planning, but if you read some of his posts on the forums you will see he clearly intends on making a SWAT 4 style game. $15 gets you the game when it is finished assuming they reach the $200,000 goal. If they don't reach the $200,000, you don't loose any money. If you really liked Raven Shield and SWAT 4 this might be your only chance to see another similar game anytime soon.

He said there won't be a cover system. And that is for consoles only, assuming they do make a console port. Remember, it is a PC game that might get ported to consoles.

Entirely different game. That is Ground Branch. I believe they too will start a Kickstarter, though at a later date. Months, maybe a year or so from now. If ever. Similar goals and intentions though, I've been following it for about 4 years, maybe more.

Apparently he will post a video with some more insight into his plans soon. He probably should have done so sooner than halfway through the time period though.
  20. Looks like there is a damage model (at least visually). If they can make a convincing damage model then that is nice improvement for the vehicles. I just hope this is not ArmA 2: WWII. If this is the case I would be happy to. I have my doubts this game will deliver (for me), but I am keeping my hopes up.

    Medal of Honor - Warfighter

The previous entry to the series was nice for what it was, but a bit expensive even at the $3 I paid (around 5 hours of less of SP). That last one tried to make the story and theme seem authentic, and for an action game/movie it did well. The gameplay had less "taking control of your player" moments than BF3 and the CoD games but was still very linear, and it got a little stale at parts. If they can somehow make the gameplay more diverse and keep the story similar (please, no more conspiracy/nuke/whatever plots) then it might be a decent bargain bin title.

    Crowdsourced Hardcore Tactical Shooter

This post sums it up well. Sadly, if this fails, I doubt anyone will fund a tactical shooter in the future due to thinking there is not enough interest.

    Crowdsourced Hardcore Tactical Shooter

Sadly, tactical shooters are just not that popular. Though I think any decent tactical shooter will sell well (though not CoD numbers) because there is really no other game aside from ArmA. Spread the word and send the links to others you know who play tactical shooters or even PC based games.

    Crowdsourced Hardcore Tactical Shooter

Heroes and Generals is not supposed to be realistic or tactical, it will be a BF style game with an RTS element. The mod for Crysis claims it will be "Half-way between Battlefield and modern Warfare 2" with no mention of any tactical or realistic features being added in. I think we can cross that off the list as well. Perhaps when RO2 gets the "RO Classic" mod there that might be enough to put it in a realistic/tactical shooter category, but for now, the newest tactical shooter I can think of outside of ArmA is GRAW 1/2. And even those were on the lighter side.

    Crowdsourced Hardcore Tactical Shooter

I was about to post this here. Bump. Surely there are plenty of ArmA fans who would like this game to enter development and get released. Aside from ArmA, what other developer has shown an interest in creating a tactical shooter? Probably not an opportunity to pass up.
