    Oops, almost forgot. I meant CWC campaign, please forgive me if you can. Now as you speak of it, I recall comebody of BIS stating that inspiration for Resistance story was the "help against contrarevolution" Soviets so generously granted Czechoslovakia in 1968. I never said Soviet reputation as "bad guy" is not well deserved.

    I think BIS did some good steps to give people the "bad guys" according to their taste without insulting Russia - renegade general acting against his own state, remote archipelago, Soviet government denying his actions. Russians can still feel insulted, but it's complicated matter very tightly bound to historical development of Russian state and culture. As Sanctuary said, answers can be found in history textbooks. OFP has unusual approach to the FPS genre, which is suitable for depicting modern conflict as complicated matter. With possibilities of this game, every side can be shown as the bad guys. For mature audience, such point of view can be much more attractive than a black-and-white scheme. I hope such "multicolored" approach will be encouraged by the community in the future.

    I doubt that graphically enhanced "game" will beat the specialized "simulator" on its field. Not to mention the different focus of both softwares - SB are about armor, AA will be again about infantry... Hellfish, any news on buildings destruction?

  11. Shinraiden, thanks for your post, I was too lazy to write it all. For all you satellite imagery romantics: it could be done, but 1 square kilometer will NOT make a decent OFP map.

Regarding the direct use of satellite images, it is possible (and pretty easy) to cut it into square pieces and manually add each square on its proper place - you can do that in Photoshop and Visitor. No transition textures would be used. Due to above-mentioned limits, only very small amount of terrain could be done this way. EDIT: By "thematic mapper" do you mean multi-channel imagery like Landsat TM? I think it has too poor resolution for a "realistic" results, if you'd like to do more than just fly over the landscape.

    Software Needed

    In big airsoft events, if the codenames and radio communication are set properly, you can use just map and pins, it works. GIS would be just better visualization of this, but it would have to be carefully designed. Depends on what exactly is the purpose of such system. Regarding the data, in my country (Czech Rep.) you can buy them freely, as I did in case of our favourite spots. Another way is simply scanning paper map and georeferencing it (getting it into correct coordinates), which is quite easy. What I see as a problem is registration of movement, data flow and visualization means used in the system. Wormbyte, can you post some more details on what do you expect from your BATCOM system?

    Software Needed

    First of all, Wormbyte, if I had time, you'd have another player registered. The Copehill Down area is airsofters' MOUT dream, I hope it will be successful event! I assume you might benefit rather from some GIS tool. There are some free geoinformatic systems available, but if you have an opportunity, go "pro" and find some guy who knows how to handle ArcView or ArcGIS and has a copy. ArcGIS has even sets of symbology used by US and NATO military, which would certainly add some flavour. I made some preparations using GIS for some of our own airsoft events, better to PM me, we can share experience. JW, I think that RIS, ironsights and M4-look-a-like won't change minds of paintballers to noble attitude of airsofters.

    Estonian soldier

    Eestikas, I suggest you to ask somebody in the EDF for assistance, you would be surprised how many soldiers like OFP and are willing to help. Even the opportunity to photograph the fatigues and equipment with borrowed digital camera can help you a lot. Small personal tip: take your pics in natural daylight, when it's overcast (=soft light) and around midday (=enough light). I also suggest you to add some real equipment - it is not too complicated to make the right pouches, but these details would give your addon a lot. Good luck with the project! Kala, I think next time you should think before posting...

    Suursaari Island

    Check the readme, man. If used outside FDF Mod, buildings would not have config support, so no names would be displayed, and no gates could be opened through action menu. I wanted the island to be as independent as possible, and since I think FDF is a "must have" in this community, I felt I can satisfy my artistic needs to supply the island with some good-looking Finnish objects everyone has. Besides, although I could have extracted the objects from FDF, I felt it would be too much work with just little effect. I also wanted to keep integrity of FDF Mod untouched, and I personally see no use in increasing amount of addons one has to have on harddrive. Thanks for understanding.

    TheSun, really nice pic you posted! This is the 601st Special Forces Group (rough translation of Czech name), our army's unconventional/special warfare unit; those guys did great job in war against Taliban troops in Afghanistan.

    Suursaari Island

    @the_shadow: I am now playing Finnish campaign in Forgotten Battles, and made some test missions myself in the Gulf of Finland map. Even from this game, it is clear that airbase on Suursaari would help Soviets a lot. Speaking of history, I wish to know what happened to the island after it became part of USSR. Some sources say there is some military detachment and meteorological station, the lighthouses seem to be functional (according to naval charts), but nobody knows what happened to the settlements. I assume they were left uninhabited and changed similarly as German villages in Czech Sudetendland after WW2... Soviets had airstrips on Seskar and Moschnyi (both to the east from Suursaari), if you look at Google Earth, they still seem to be there. I wonder why they didn't build there an airbase after WW2? @Sputnik Monroe: It is really strange what could be missed during island development... The building does not have proper geometry LODs, which I found just after release. I hope next patch of FDF Mod will fix this building. I ahve used this model because its modern version has some traffic signs on it and wouldn't fit too good. @Balschoiw: This is really interesting. I went through the thread you mentioned and I saw Sanctuary suggested solution via script, so I hope your mission is not entirely lost. Maybe this is not "bug" but some intention by developers in BI, made because AI could be lost in the forest square objects where AI movement is realized along the pathways... However, this looks rather "bug-like".

    Suursaari Island

    My work on Suursaari started long before Visitor was publicly released, so it is relic from those dark but great times of ancient modding, when WrpEdit was the only choice for island makers. My estimation is 3 or more years, I can't quite remember. In fact, I am really lazy guy - the island was done in two or three months of work time, stretched over extremely long period. Blake, that was really interesting reading. Making of winter version seems inevitable now. StealthTiger, I am sorry I cannot help you. Since geometry LODs of FDF buildings seem flawless, and I did not experience anything like you mention on my system (neither did many other people), I assume there is something wrong with your OFP installation. Balschoiw, thanks for such positive feedback, and I have to say I am really looking forward to the mission. I hope you will benefit from the map of local names we made (in fact, it was idea of SmartDrv, who also bore the burden of spell-checking). Can you reveal something more about your unusual mission?

    I know what you mean, but I was sick with islands with "compulsory" stuff like airport, military base, castle ruins and factory placed without any common sense. This is different map, made in realistic scale and with some logic (e.g. there is no place to put even a small airstrip on the real island, it is too rocky and ragged). Good luck with your mission making, Manhunter09. Try something different from "start at some (air)base, go somewhere and blow some things up". The island was made unusual so that some unusual scenarios could be made for it.

    @StealthTiger: The problems you mention are most probably not related to FDF Mod or the island, but are result of stretching the engine to its limits. If FPS drops, collision computation is simplified. This may result even in the complete omission of collision-related LODs (geometry) and then you can pass into the buildings. I suggest you to lower some settings (terrain detail, maximum texture resolution, view distance, screen resolution) to avoid this problem. @Blake: Thanks for such nice words! I am really looking forward to the missions! I only regret I didn't have time for winter conversion yet: In March 1942 it was recaptured by the Finns during the so-called Continuation War after an invasion party trekked over the ice from Kotka. - this would make great minicampaign...
