Suggestion to people who host servers

The problem with ranked game modes which reward players with high end equipment are that the players will lone wolf and fight over points instead of actually playing as a team. If you're trying to be tactical with a group of players and advance/cover like the game was meant for, it's all for nothing because there's two clowns who are sprinting ahead with 6 SMAWs, exploiting third person and commander view because they want their precious Harrier. The coop maps are best set up so no vehicles are rewarded, the scoreboard is shut off, and weapons are limited for class. Of course that probably means running an empty server. :j:
  2. Agreed, although the unarmed walk animation seems fine. I played ArmA1 for the first time in a while, and the old run/sprint animations made me ill. But at least even those were a step up from OFP (like the S shaped standing pose among other things). Joining in with a dozen or so people pushing through forests and cities in ArmA2, the new animations really seem to flow well.
  3. Steam says I've put 142.8 hours into ArmA2 since it unlocked on the 26th. It was like this for OFP as well. I must have played the demo for a good 100 hours before the full game was finally released, and I remember not touching anything else for months on end. The series has technical issues, some pretty silly bugs, an unpolished feeling, and generally hasn't been the most efficient "sit down and play" experience, but I sure as hell wouldn't deny I've put the most game time into it this past decade. Morrowind + Oblivion came somewhat close for me, but they didn't have coop. :D
  4. I'm really looking forward to this. We made something very similar for ArmA1.
  5. At least it's boredom, and not grief. Every single one of our "sandbox" missions ended with PVP and nukes. All in good fun though. Latest public Domi session had clan members monopolizing all the helicopters for training (even though this same clan has a separate dedicated training server) and the now-standard time bombs sitting on the spawn point/tower. Another clan member was using the wreck chopper as their own personal joyriding vehicle. And now I remember why our group of friends only played in our own locked off private games for ArmA1.
  6. I would definitely love to get that mission. We made something similar for ArmA1. The idea was to have every weapon and vehicle available in the game (plus most of the quality addons), and have the island spawn bad guys and/or civilians where we wanted them, and then doing whatever we wanted. We could just go for a cruise, or race, or go GTA on the populace, or spawn bad guys and try to kill them without hitting civilians, or we could just drop a nuclear bomb on the city and giggle at the carnage. We could set an enemy presence in a populated city and try to get someone near enough to laser designate the presence for a precision airstrike. Sometimes get shot down deep into enemy territory and try to hike all the way back to base without getting discovered and shot. Maybe just have a police pursuit with a Crown Vic and a Dodge Challenger. There was just a lot to do and roleplay, but without scripted rules and limitations. This was naturally only for a trusted group of friends, and not public access. However, it was our favorite way to play ArmA1.
  7. I just don't find aircraft very welcome in most of these game modes, unless the person flying is working with the ground forces to specifically target enemy units which are posing the most significant obstacles to the objective, like the real thing. Most players (in public servers) who get hold of any air attack aircraft will happily attempt to kill every single last enemy at the objective with it, as if this were BF2. If they're successful, it negated more or less the entire rest of the server's worth of player involvement to accomplish the next objective. If the AA and enemy aircraft are down, a single A-10 can blissfully sterilize a city's worth of enemy units in one or two missions. I've done this myself (I really do love the GAU-8), but it really wasn't as satisfying as moving up through a city with the group on the ground providing covering fire, healing, etc. The biggest problem with ranked servers are the rank farming players who fight over kills, "COD" rush with 6 SMAWs, and literally kill any other player making off with their vehicle. They're just interested in raising their score, and everybody else can go to hell. It's just a bunch of idiocy that can really be avoided if the mission didn't include high end vehicles to begin with. I watched one guy fight over the wreck chopper to recover an AV8, only to abandon his AV8 sitting completed on the wreck pad to rush for the fresh one awarded by the mission and literally shoot down every other player running towards it. It took about two minutes for the jet to actually get occupied because everybody was gunning down everybody else on their way to it. One player logged on, asked if there were any jets available, and logged off in an insulting, TKing huff when he was told there were none. Honestly, of the public coop respawn type games, I've found unranked Domi to be the best, since all the Tungs and AA pods turn all the jets into wrecks and either forces the jet-desperate players off the server or makes them grab a rifle and actually start playing the game.
  8. Domination has two mobile respawns, which are LAV-HQs. These can load ammo boxes at base, and drop them when they're situated near the misson area. Also, anybody can spawn a motorcycle or a mountain bike from an MHQ, although depending on server settings there may be a time limit before you can make another. Spawning a personal vehicle can be useful, especially since the LAV-HQs can only hold two people. LAV-HQs can be hauled around by Lift Choppers (all non-Wreck Blackhawks). The optimal setup is to place an MHQ near the main mission area, and one MHQ near the side mission. When a placed MHQ is to be moved, it can reload it's dropped ammo box. Blackhawks can load and place ammo boxes as well. When a Domination main mission area is cleared, a flag pole is spawned in the town (indicated on the map) which will allow you to parajump anywhere on the map. (While efficient and helpful, I've found that Evo is better regarding a finished town regardless of a lack of a teleport out since it has MV-22's available and the extraction is a little more exciting, but that's what I've personally seen so far.) The wreck chopper should be placed near the wreck pad away from the main spawn, to keep random people from using it as a transport. The wreck chopper should only be used to fetch wrecks, and there's only one of them. From what I've seen in public servers, people get really insanely bitchy and whiny about the wreck chopper, even if you're playing a very tight, efficient dedicated wreck hauling/repairing role. :j: I guess they don't want you to recover the useful vehicles, they just want their toy back that takes forever to repair and gets shot down 15 seconds after taking off every damn time. I don't know if it's the server settings or what, but my experience with Domination is that there are just frigging assloads of Tungs patrolling the map, which just makes it more aggravating when someone monopolizes the wreck pad with aircraft that don't actually accomplish anything the whole session by constantly getting shot down.

    Bigfoot...has anyone found him?

Even if BIS didn't officially put a Bigfoot in, it should be a simple enough matter to retexture a ghillie unit. Is it possible to integrate new units into modules? It would be neat to put such a creature in the wildlife module with a 0.01% spawn chance.

i can only hope americans buy this

A friend and I were obsessed with OFP1 since release and we got a couple more friends interested over the years (all American). We're all looking forward to ArmA II, but are willing to wait for the worldwide Steam release. Everybody else we personally know over here plays WoW almost exclusively.

Can you ride in the train?

Trains should at least be possible. I recall playing around with the AEF trains for OFP back when those came out.

    North America Release / Publisher

I had two friends buy ArmA 1 on Steam. They said it was only patched up to 1.08 (with a purchase as recent as a couple weeks ago). They were able to apply a normal 1.14 patch and mod it to hell and back without any issues so far. It appears there weren't any special Steam features attached to the game.

    North America Release / Publisher

Same story here, except with four other friends. I feel like an ass for sharing my excitement for ArmA2 and now it seems as though we're going to get screwed over on the release date. It would be very depressing if OFPDR released before ArmA2 in the states.

    Big-Foot in OFP ??

The only proper way they could do Bigfoot in OFP is to hardcode every aspect of it and make the sightings ultra rare under strange circumstances. Otherwise, people could just tear the game apart and find the model file somewhere.

Why do you see OFP as the best military game?

OFP has provided some of the best singleplayer and cooperative gaming expeiriences I've had. I mean hell, what games these days actually come with cooperative as a multiplay option? There's been all the realistic, tense battles I've experienced with friends at my side, and all the weird, creepy, and strange situations I've experienced as well... everything from Sopwith vs. Hind dogfights to vs. games using F-18 nukes to a masochisticly long game of "Hide & Seek" using the entire island of Tonal. Remember the mech with the huge minigun? Coop against those on maximum difficulty... damn! Not to mention the six hour sweeps of enemy units in the mountains of Nogova, from dark to late morning, watching the sun rise (in-game and RL)...

    < Hot Swap >

Well, even if mission design was centered around the need to swap bodies, at least the campaign is cooperative-play compatable. At least this was my understanding reading the magazine articles. (I'd only want to play the campaign coop. )

    Adjustable iron sights?

You sure or pure speculation? Its confirmed Just wondering, where's the information on that?

    Possiblities...

Good lord, 160 player support? Screw WWIIOL, I have to see this.

Ofp combat photography. No pics over 100kb.

Here you go: http://www.dolphinparadise.net/modules....bum.php There's nothing really interesting yet, I still need to sift through a *ton* of images...

Wow, that's actually pretty cool. I'll be looking forward to multiplayer WWII dogfights in the future.

    Mf conquer the island

I absolutely love it. I just played through on "single player", the AI seemed fairly weak and uninspired, but I'm sure it's a riot in multi. And aside from wishing I could place waypoints for each team directly onto the map (instead of entering four different numericals in seperate boxes for the coordinates), the game is very enjoyable.

    Trabant golf sim

Haha! Classic. I've yet to see anything even close to that in any other game.

    Which pistols

Well, if we're talking small SMG's, I wouldn't think an Mp7 would be too bad, actually. 1911's are downright sexy, but I voted for the Desert Eagle anyway. DE scopage =

    Best addon resource ?

Wow. I leave the OFP community for half a year, come back, and suddenly find more fun stuff to download for OFP than my poor little 56k modem could possibly hope to sponge up within any reasonable amount of time. http://www.ofp-zone.de/ Isn't bad, either.
