Why are you playing BIS games?

Ditto to that. The last two years, all I've done in gaming is to play Arma, edit missions or make Arma movies. My new game purchases have fallen off a cliff! AFAIK, Arma/Arma 2 are the only games where you can actually take part in military battles and military situations. Every other military game seems to be no different than what we saw in Quake 3. In some ways, its even more chaotic in the most recent games. I asked my buddy what BCBF2 was like. He just said to me, "don't even go there - you'll hate it", as he knew I was an Arma fan. I remember my first days playing Arma. I was simply moving down a road in the Valor area (flat grassy fields with some lines of trees) with 3 AI mates and I realized that absolutely anything could happen - just like in RL. And that my fate, pretty much completely rested in my ability to lead a squad in combat. I had never experienced a feeling like that before in a game. It's kind of hard to describe. I'm sure many of you had similar experiences. There are two things I'd ask of BIS: 1) keep working on AI behavior. The day that the AI gets close to being as smart as a human combatant is the day I quit my job so I can play around the clock. 2) Have your dev staff use their incredible expertise to put out some very impressive combined ops missions for the community. This could go very far in actually "selling" the game to a wider audience. To simply call Arma 1/2 a game is to vastly under-represent its potential. It's just so much more than that.

    CPBO Windows 7 proper FIX

I can't even get CPBO to work in either of the two Windows XP installations I have on my PC. I had it working on one XP install but then moved on to a new XP install on a new hard drive. This one never worked and it seems to have something to do with Arma 2 as the messages I get from it reference Arma 2. I did everything mentioned in this thread, clear out registry and delete association but it still does not work. At some point, I re-hooked up my old XP install and now it does not work either. I think I tried the manual command to do an extract and I don't think it worked (not sure). When I need to extract a .pbo I actually have to do it on my PC at work - that one works!! Just noticed a new version posted over at Armaholic - may give that a try.

    WARMOD release

I'll drink to that. I've seen the AI do some amazing things in AI vs. AI combat - sometimes I like to just sit back and watch.IMHO, AI behavior is THE most important factor in a game like Arma. I'm just being patient with Arma 2 - when I last played it (a while ago) there were just too many problems with AI behavior. I'm sure that, eventually, it'll shine like Arma does.

    ArmA Dynamic coop campaign?

I'm not sure if this fits the bill at all but Dynamic Sahrani is a "dynamic" co-op mission with various mission-types (Destroy Armor, Rescue Hostage, Kill Officer, Defend Position, Nail the Shilka, Convoy Intercept, etc., etc.) You can use the radio to have a random mission and mission-type selected for you or you can select the mission-type (e.g. Kill Officer) and the game will set you up with a random mission that fits that type. It's not a campaign.

    WARMOD release

Günter, do you know which mod is responsible for the spurting blood when a soldier is hit? I've seen it in some of my WarMod Fraps recordings. ECS? 6thSense? I isolated the 6thSense mod and added it to my Sakakah mod list and tried that but got no blood spurts. I'm recording video of an insurgent getting hit by a sniper but I get no blood spurts...just those red blood patches on the body - which is a bit goofy when the target is hit with a .50 caliber Barrett sniper rifle.

    Generation kill mod

That's some of the best-looking combat environment I've ever seen. I wish Arma II had gone that direction instead of the one they did. I can't wait until this mod is done! Leave it to another Duke City resident to come up with it!

    Best mods for arma?

Have to throw my hat in for WarMod - it simply makes a huge difference in gameplay. Much of the difference is probably due to the longer engagement distance and the incredible AI dialog that is added. But there are a ton of mods within WarMod that contribute to the gameplay. I call it the "Arma on Steroids" mod. I've played the same mission with and without WarMod and without it, engagements can be slow and "sleepy" in comparison. Of course, with WarMod I tend to take a few more casualties. :D Vanilla Arma is hard to play once you've experienced all the mods available. At a bare minimum, I'd say that you have to have a great sound mod active. I use one of Mark VIII's prior versions of his sound mod.

Troubled mind, want to buy ArmA 2

That will probably do very little if anything for Arma II performance. But more importantly, you'd be taking money away from areas where you could improve performance. Give that comment a smiley. He needs to buy the game to support BIS (if he's a fan of the series). His rig will eventually catch up. Arma II supports that card?

How do I take good screenshots?

Aside from using the pointers in that wiki for screenshots, the best screenshots I've ever made were frames extracted from FRAPS video I shot while flying the camera all over the place and with the camera attached to vehicles and jets. I use VirtualDub's jog wheel to spin through the video with my mouse. When you find a great shot, you can export the frame as a screenshot. When you're up and close and personal, especially with jets, Arma 1/2 looks like a whole different game. You can see some of that in the jet sequences in the video in my sig.</shamesless plug>

    cam scripts?

What are the chances a scripting noob can convert Gigan's script to an Arma 1 version? I desperately need the new abilities he's added to the Arma 2 version. Specifically, the ability to quickly switch camera targets using keys amongst the various soldiers and vehicles on the field. I tried Kegety's Spectating Script (which has this ability) but it obviously is not as full-featured as Gigan's camera script. @Gigan, your camera script is awesome. I use it religiously for movie-making in Arma 1. I'm sure your GCam will be great for A2 movies. Thanks for your work!

Is it time to buy ArmA 2?

I think it's good to hear honest opinions about Arma 2 even if they're not flattering. You can be critical and still be a fanboy! That's the case with me. I've basically played no other game besides Arma for the last 1.5-2 years. I play alone with all AI and I could not tolerate Arma 2's AI gameplay through all the patches up through 1.04. But with Arma, I picked up the game after it was "fully" patched (1.14 anyway), worked great and the mods were simply phenomenal! Now, I bought Arma 2 right from the start. I'm just starting to get back to it and noticed major frame rate improvement with patch 1.05. Basically, I'm waiting for BIS to patch the living crap out of it and modders to completely transform the game from its vanilla version before I get serious. But, at some point, I'm sure I will get serious. But, I do have to say, if the game is inexpensive there as it is over here, what are you waiting for? The Arma series has completely ruined me for gaming - I simply can't play other games any more. They're that good! If that sounds like fanboy-talk, you're right!

    For God Sake!

From your other thread: Let me get this straight...you're trying to run Arma and even Arma 2 on a mobile GT 240M in a laptop? Even if you were running at 1024x768 resolution, I'm not sure you'd get acceptable frame rates. The GT 240M is an extremely low-end graphics solution. Do I have your specs wrong?

    ArmA 2 wont install!

I wouldn't blame BIS for this - chances are the media is fine. The key is finding a drive that can read the disk. This happens all the time whenever a new game is released. It's just another hoop we have to jump through as gamers. Looks like Sheldon's got a very good Samsung drive there - no idea why there would be a problem. That doesn't mean anything. It's new games that cause the problems. Even an old CD reader could probably install Office. What blows me away is that Neodug can install it with an optical drive in one PC but not with the same drive in another PC. I usually buy a new DVD-ROM drive every two years (for a whopping $19) but this doesn't sound like a case of old DVD readers.
  14. It's very sad when someone passes who shared a common interest or in this case, a common passion and that person contributes so much so that others can enjoy that passion. It creates a bond even if I didn't know the man personally. I remember his straight-from-the-hip answers and thought what a great asset he was to the community. My helmet's off to you, Planck!

    CPU temps (curious)

Really, that's what you should be using to determine how adequate your cooling is. From the temps you posted, it seems that your previous cooling setup was pretty poor. I wouldn't think Arma 2 would take your cpu anywhere near that high with a decent cooler. Sounds your new cooler is much better. Check out your temps with Prime95, OCCT, Orthos, whatever. They will put way more pressure on your cpu than Arma 2.

    Should I buy this game?

Yes, demos seem to be pretty worthless in trying to determine if you should buy a game. I remember playing the SWAT 4 demo and just thought "WTF?!?!" What fun is it to tell perps to drop their weapons and cuff them. I then literally forced myself to play the game over and over...until finally I saw the light and it became, IMHO, one of the most brilliant games I've ever played. I thought the original Arma demo was so bad it delayed my buying Arma for almost 2 years. Then, after I bought it, I started playing the horrid SP campaign and almost deleted it from my drive forever. Now, all I play is Arma (MP) - period. I thought the Arma 2 demo was really nothing special. The thing about Arma series games is that they get patched up the ass, and the "final" product may not resemble the original. Throw the gargantuan mods in the mix and you might not even recognize the game after patches and mods. Alot of your decision probably depends on how much of a run-and-gunner you are (if at all). Or whether you prefer a game with a much more tactical feel. Years ago, I went from playing Quake 2 to Ghost Recon. After first, it was a very hard transition. I just thank the stars that I stuck with Ghost Recon and found that no, I'm not a run-and-gunner at all! I played some Arma co-op once with a friend and he never caught on - his loss. Sometimes you need to give a game a lot of time before you "get it".

    WARMOD release

Yes, you have to change the value assigned to setting 9 in the ECS Locals Settings Table. If you use 3.125, that equals very high. You can check out the settings here. I wonder if setting variable 8 in the Local Settings Table to false would completely prevent ECS from even messing with Terrain Detail. But it seems to default to false. Not sure what it does. ------ I found that the Voice Quiet mod to keep the soldiers quiet is incompatible with, I think, ECS itself in WarMod. When I have both VoiceQuiet and WarMod active at the same time, when I start a mission, the screen goes black, the two mods get into a cagefight and WarMod emerges the winner...i.e. VoiceQuiet doesn't work.

    ArmA or ArmA 2?

If you mean an online store, you can get it here for $3 and change. Look below the $17 price of Amazon's. If you mean a "real" store, I'm not sure you could still find it.

Yeah, you're right - so your PC is obviously in good hands in terms of troubleshooting. :)

    WARMOD release

I saw that setting at the ECS web site and left it on "true". On one mission, it started raining and everything got REALLY foggy. It was some seriously cool s**t. Was able to use it to approach the enemy and blasted an APC while using the fog as cover. I wasn't watching my frame rates at the time though. ECS has a nice FPS counter but I have to use the uglier one in Rivatuner because FRAPS will show the ECS FPS counter in movies, not so with Rivatuner. I know, I strayed a little OT on that stuff.

It's actually good that your PC resets in other games than Arma which, as you said, tells you it's not Arma causing the problem. If you can't even type in a forum post without a reset, it sounds like a severe hardware problem. The very first culprit to check would be your power supply - which may be failing or is way under-rated for your system. If you rule out the power supply, the hardware troubleshooting will become much harder but I would make sure your RAM is good too.

    WARMOD release

Yes, I do. That's exactly how I approached it too. Wish I could say that. If I go online and play on a "WarMod" server, if I have disabled some mods that give me problems (the voice stuff and the sight adjustment), could I still join the server? BTW, what mod does "weapons.cfg" belong to? It's the only file I couldn't identify.

    No Online Servers

This happens to everyone at some point. Sometimes the servers simply do not appear. Go in later and there they are. It's an intermittent problem.
