I'm really baffled by the way people are playing the online multiplayer game.
Defunkt replied to cadmium77's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - MULTIPLAYER
Love the way these gripe threads get turned into a vehicle for every man and his dog to grind their own particular axe without following any sort of through-line. First sentence of the OP is "It's like all they can imagine for this game is to play it as BF2 Project Reality Mod." and two posts up from here it's come full circle to "BUT the public multiplayer needs some Project Reality injected into it in a bad way." I'm with the latter proposition and am certain there are many people working on PR style multi-player for ArmA 2 as we speak (I know I am). It's just going to take a while because, unlike Co-op where missions like Warfare, Domination, Evolution etc. were regularly played in ArmA 1 and ready to be ported to ArmA 2 immediately P-v-P had been all but abandoned in ArmA 1. Consequently, a revived interest in P-v-P (down to improvements in the look and feel) will be slow to come to fruition because the game modes need to be worked-up from scratch. All we can do is keep our head down, keep developing our missions and be ready to piggy back on the fresh flush of interest when Operation Arrowhead arrives. Now let this thread die before it goes full circle again. :bounce3: -
Would buy the game, but dont know if problem is fixed.

Nice_Boat Tank Damage System
Defunkt replied to Nice_Boat's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Excellent move IMHO. There's far too much emphasis on addons in ArmA modding. Even if you can only realise 75% of a solution this way it's going to reach far more players if mission makers can include it and ensure everybody is still on the same playing field. -
Hmmm... China and Russia fighting over oil, where have I heard that premise before?

Best if you ask HERE. -
An awesome selection of very beautifully made models but how much of it is actually in danger of being released before an ArmA III? I'm a long time visitor to your site and admirer of your talent but in this context, being an ArmA 2 Work-in-Progress forum (as opposed to a general 3D appreciation site like Polycount) it frankly all leaves me a bit teased and bad-tempered. It's your prerogative to do as much or as little as you please and spread that around as many projects as you care to promote but if you've posted here looking for feedback on your work-in-progress, that's mine, great models though.

ArmA 2 has more than proven itself worthy of purchase for me.
-
Not for me to tell you how to spend your money but I think it's a shame more gamers don't keep their wallet in their pocket until a game is proven, especially in this case given how little CM have revealed. Can't help but feel it'd lead to better games.

A.C.E. Advanced Combat Environment Mod 2
Defunkt replied to sickboy's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Making it modular defeats it's function as a de-facto standard, you'd (we'd) be straight back to mod-hell (different command line for every server). What I would like to see though is some sort of API that allows the mission/server-op to enable/disable components feature-by-feature. This would encourage more servers to buy-in, if they only wanted to use one or two features that's fine it won't stop players with the whole thing installed from joining. -
Debug log for dedicated server
Defunkt replied to MH6's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
Should appear as arma2server.rpt in your profiles folder. The default profiles folder is (IIRC) \My Documents\ArmA 2\ but I specify mine on the server command line with: -profiles=D:\Document\ArmA2 -
Mando Missile ArmA for ArmA 2
Defunkt replied to mandoble's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Outstanding work Mandoble, all very valuable improvements. Must be getting close to a public beta now! :bounce3: -
Interview with Tim Browne confirms no JIP for Co-op (on Page 3). I'll let you draw your own conclusion as to why CM refuses to post in this 29 page topic clamouring for information on a dedicated server. The website for some 3rd party company (Quazal) states they will be hosting MP services for the game, though that might just be for consoles. I want this game to be good, for me it could fill a niche that ArmA doesn't and if it has a dedicated server, reasonable server browser and JIP for PvP I anticipate my community could get a lot of fun out of it. However nothing that CM are saying (bugger all) is providing me with much confidence.
-
So almost certainly no dedicated server and probably no JIP. What were they thinking? That said, you only have to glance at the MP forum here to see that BIS didn't exactly address the modern gamer's expectations of MP. Small saving grace here (for co-op at least) is the relative ease with which ArmA I missions could be ported.

Cool, I look forward to it. I think an interim release is a good idea, somebody might come forward to assist with the issues you're having. -

IAWS standard definition
Defunkt replied to [frl]myke's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Pleased to hear it. But wasn't somebody working on a script and U.I. so pilots could re-arm on the runway? -
Hang on, so you're complaining about a campaign you haven't even played? Even if your position hadn't just lost any and all credibility, I for one never bother with the SP in any game and frankly would prefer they focussed instead on the MP exclusively. I also never played OFP, the graphics just looked so poor that I was never inclined to try it.

ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead discussion thread
Defunkt replied to Tonci87's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Is MNO an acronym or just a way of saying "no" in which case I'd be interested to know your reasoning. I don't know nearly enough about the subject to understand why some (or all) shaders need to be specified at compile time (and not the diffuse map) but whatever the reason I don't see that it is necessarily so for these heat-map textures. Are they not most likely (in DirectX terms) to be simple diffuse maps themselves? Personally I like ArmA 2's lighting very much. -
ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead discussion thread
Defunkt replied to Tonci87's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
But do we know that for a fact? Call it wishful thinking but I can't help but think (read hope) that these temperature textures might prove to have more in common with the normal diffuse map which can be switched at run-time. -
Modding it, essentially without an SDK, sounds like a world of pain.

F-117A NightHawk - Alpha Released
Defunkt replied to Fortran's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Sakura Chan, I've actually been dabbling with the same thing hung off the BIS aircraft vapour AOA calculations and using ArmA 2 post-processing effects. I think your effects look very good (better) but how about making such a thing apply to all members of the Plane class rather than one aircraft at a time? [sorry to go OT Fortran.] -
Mountains to the North and West (only) please.
