Haven't tried it myself but given it's titled "Ambient" (i.e. I would suppose normally incidental to some other specific task) I don't know what else you should expect. If you want instant combat just plonk down a few OpFor and go at it.

ArmA2 Point! (as in "hey you, go there" *point*)
Defunkt replied to noubernou's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Good job, I think your attention to detail will pay off in as much as it will feel more natural and inherently 'make sense'. Having looked at the video I think it might be good if there was either some simple way to prevent the indicating player from moving while pointing or removing the indicator if they do turn away, people don't tend to walk around with their arm stuck out and while they may indicate with a sweeping motion I think it would be a small loss against removing the bobbing laser-pointer-like appearance it can assume at present. So; press to point and remove either when the key is released or the pointer turns away more than 3 degrees or so, this would mean that the blob doesn't track or move, just appears at discrete locations. The indicating player might need some leeway for the first second or two (before the location is transmitted globally) to allow them to better place it. ---------- Post added at 12:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:19 PM ---------- Actually the turning is really neither here not there (though the point should always be within +/- 90 of forward), main thing I'm proposing is that once transmitted it doesn't track and the pointing player must release and re-point to indicate a different (discrete) location. -

Good God! Why didn't we think of that? Good job you're here now to present all these wonderful broad brush strokes in individual threads... -

ArmA2 Point! (as in "hey you, go there" *point*)
Defunkt replied to noubernou's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Very nice idea, the hallmark of which is its simplicity. It'll be a great aid but care should be taken not to make it any more useful than pointing is in real life, the need for accurate vocal communications and the potential for ambiguity is a vital element when immersing yourself in a combat sim. A few observations... 1. One-size regardless of range is an elegant mechanism for making indications less distinct the further away but I think in most/many cases it should be much larger than shown in the screenshots, at present it's quite easy for the pointer and observer to determine the center, as you might guess I don't much care for a crosshair within. 2. The size you're using might be okay if the observer is standing right next to the person pointing and can more or less sight along his arm but where standing 10m away and perpendicular to the direction indicated I really think it should be nearer a half-screen high. Scale according to the distance between the two parties and to a lesser extent the angle between pointer, observer and target, I think it'd be nice to reflect the two things differently, scale according to distance and let angle influence opacity. 3. Why coloured? Strikes me as unnecessarily 'gamey', personally I'd be happy with a fuzzy white/light cloud, might also further address the ease with which a center can be determined. 4. You're going to need two keys aren't you? One for the pointer to choose to point and another for the observer to look (they should have the option of not seeing these indicators). You could use one key and a shift/ctrl modifier but I'd suggest you should be able to point and look at others pointing at the same time. 5. Offset of the pointer's name could/should be randomised so as not to indicate a center. ---------- Post added at 08:02 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:57 AM ---------- Actually the other way around would probably be more representative of RL. EDIT (should think more before posting): Strictly speaking the angle between pointer and observer would influence the width (only) of the blob, it still being possible to accurately gauge the ascension but harder to determine the lateral component when standing perpendicular to the direction indicated. Possibly I'm just being a bit OCD now... -
Six updater, ruining everything.
Defunkt replied to Fintroll's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I think all releases should be distributed via Six-Updater and so will you sooner or later. It's for you alone to decide if you want to get with the programme now and enjoy the benefits immediately or let your unwillingness to learn new things 'ruin everything'. -
Congratulations fromz, to have created so much to such an impeccable standard is a great achievement. Your creations are sure to receive much use and bring pleasure to many, thank you!

Footmunch/eddyD F-16 in ArmA 2
Defunkt replied to [frl]myke's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Mandoble, this would be the perfect time to propose integrating missing items from the DesertPhoenix missile pack into Myke's GLT equivalent. There may also be some common ground on dialog based re-arming? -
What are you proposing? That they should just magically forget they ever saw you?

Footmunch/eddyD F-16 in ArmA 2
Defunkt replied to [frl]myke's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Good to hear. Can I ask if the Thunderbirds skin might still be included in a future update? It struck me as very useful opposite to the black version in any F-16 vs F-16 air combat. Also, Myke, would you consider releasing the next version without the counter-measures scripts? There are now two popular systems available that can be layered on any aircraft and it seems to me the sort of functionality that should be consistent across all. -
SIX Aiaktalik map Beta1 released
Defunkt replied to Chill xl's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
And there is your problem. -
I understand the appeal of what you're proposing but standards tend to assert themselves ground up rather than top down. MMA is a good example of that and obviously ACE also. Before ACE there was this thread which detailed a collection of addons that worked well together, I would suggest you're better off taking that approach and then perhaps petition addon makers to tweak for a best fit where required within that. You might also look at the ClanBase pack, I haven't but it sounds like a good collection (last I heard kju was going to add MMA as well).

Stunning map, very detailed and authentic, thank you.

Cheers BIS, I hope 2010 will bring still greater success for you.

I've been holding off installing our Linux server until 1.05 is released but I intend to try using the free version of SyncBack for the initial upload by FTP. It won't patch only changed portions of files like rsync but hopefully will automate the business of only uploading files that have changed in future.

A.C.E. Advanced Combat Environment - Public Beta!
Defunkt replied to sickboy's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
I have, it's common (possibly even a constant) for me with the SAW at least, loud (irrespective of distance) and non-directional (I use headphones BTW). Apart from that the ACE sounds are very good. -

A.C.E. Advanced Combat Environment - Public Beta!
Defunkt replied to sickboy's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
You only have to download a few user missions to know that many mission makers never look at it. If you add -showscripterrors to your command line you'll get to see it all, yours and theirs... -
Mando Missile ArmA for ArmA 2
Defunkt replied to mandoble's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
At the risk of stating the obvious, the portables are primarily designed for Expert mode where you won't/can't see the default targeting indicators. -

I took that MiG for a spin in ArmA 2 and thought it a very nice add-on that I'd probably never find a setting for but this is a near-perfect application. Red star doesn't matter at all, it has been rushed into service.
