OFP photography - Questions & comments

dude some guys actually post two pics(below 100kb x2) and merge into one parvus knows the way to do this As for putting two pictures in the same image, it's simple with a basic knowledge of Photoshop.. File > Place, find the image, etc. Then Edit > Free Transform, resize it (With shift held to keep it right shape), same with bottom layer.. Wont be any size savings over two seperate images, but if you want to edit them toether obviously you need to put them in one document.. - Ben

OFP photography - Questions & comments

Load your image up, fiddle with it if you want etc, then File > Save For Web Select JPEG, quality around medium/high, look at the bottom area, it says the file size.. Just play with the quality, and you can resize the image (for export, doesn't affect original file) in the middle-right box, in a tab called "Image Resize".. Just fiddle around till you get the image as small as possible without making it look pixely/noisey - Ben

    MultiCam Anyone?

Hmm.. An idea/soloution.. Since OFP's general cammo system sucks, why? Seeing a 1204^2 res texture on a ~1.7m unit, on a 512^2 terrain texture streched out over 64m square just doesn't give enough texture to hide in.. The soloution? Well, an idea.. Start to make the unit transparent in the more distant lods, so the lower lod (only really seen when the unit is very far away) is, say, 75% transparent (So should be very hard to see they move, which is accurate), and at a few hundered meters, around %50, and <20m should be %0.. Not totaly sure how well it'd work, but if it looks crap, erm.. Blame Codardl for the idea! Theoretically it should work.. The semi-transparent-ness shouldn't (it won't) mess up seeing units when they move, as in reality. Seeing units at mid-distances should still be hard (see http://www.multicampattern.com/img/splash_graphic_4.jpg for example).. Since there isn't desnse enough patternt to allow that, using the terriain behind the unit to add a more "accurate" cammoflauge scheme will compensate.. ..okay, so I've no idea if this will acctualy work, but it could.. ..so, Wilco, would you care to try an experimental version of one of your units? (or get a friendly modder to try it) - Ben

Blackdog~ and HOBOMAN, both really nice pictures A quick question to anyone who knows anyhting about the lensbaby lesnes.. Is there any big differences between the original, and the new one? Looking at the site, the only difference I can see is that the V2 has F2 (as oposed to F2.6, which isn't worth the almost double in price IMO) - Ben

How did you come to be playing OFP?

Saw a screenshot in a magazine (UK PC Gamer I think) of a bit open field, with a truck, some guys jumping out of the back, enemy tracers flying at them, skimmed over the text, flicked over without remebering the name (Yes yes, forgive me ) A while later (no idea how long to be honest), was in town with a friend, and saw this game (the GOTY edition), and looked at the screenshots, and suddenely remebered that screenshot, and the words "simple to use mission editor" (I done a lot of mission making in Delta Force 2, which was fairly annoying to do, since the editor wasn't the most logical one ever, though better than the Unreal Ed etc ), and seeing things like it had full islands, instead of levels etc.. Since I was.. hmm, 12 or 13 (Not sure..), I got my friends mother to buy it on my behalf.. Then went home, played the campaign for a bit, got bored of it, tried the mission editor, played it for a while.. Then, I someone ended up talking to someone who was in a squad, and started talking to him about OFP MP (Which I couldn't play at the time due to the joys of 56k), and was impressed by the sounds of things like CTI. And he pointed me int he direction of www.ofp.info and www.ofpec.com Went down hill from there, still playing the game howevermany years later - Ben

    Kill yourself!

Erm.. This seems like a totaly pointless feature to incorporate into the main game, but it could be modded into the game, with an animation, and assuming you can fire from custom-animations, you should be able to shoot yourself in the head/foot, or where-ever.. Not sure, but I think this can be done in OFP.. - Ben
  15. As mauled as I'll get for suggesting such a thing : I saw this BF2 addon screenshot, and though "OFP needs a map like that".. Maybe slightly tighter packed, but OFP lacks a modern, sub-urban map/area, atleast I've not seen many.. Maybe something like.. Basicly strips of land, divided by fences, the house's, with a gate at once side for access to the garden.. Could be fun in MP, and maybe rope-playing type maps, assuming the houses were enterable.. So, does anyone know of a moderen island, with similar terrain, or are there any bored island makers? - Ben

    Game2 -> OFP2 maybe?

A lot of programs that use USB-based protection have been cracked.. And the game still needs just as much code on the software side to only work when that USB is plugged in.. It's no harder to crack than the use thing, it's just less common so people haven't worked out how to do it as quickly.. Not condoning/condeming cracking software, but all software-protection is (as admited by most game developers) to stop cracked versions appearing in the first few days after a release.. Really, the best anti-piracy option is just to make a decent game people want to buy.. Annyway, appologies for going of topic - Ben

    NO jets in ArmA?

Yees, lets all jump to conclusions from.. scratchy at best litrature.. Untill we can all hold/hug the game box, it's generaly a bad idea to start complaining something is missing.. The game is changing all the time, most of the screenshots are outdated, not that it stops people mauling them as soon as they show the slightest imprefections.. *Looks up to see my ranting hat has repeeared* How did that get there? Seriously though, not putting jets in would be moronic, and theres no reason why.. Unless codmasters hold the copyright to jets in video-games, which I kinda doubt - Ben

    William Porter's Blog

"My God is that magazine fully retarded, "Oh look BF2, shiny graphics! more accessible for gamers....that are 10"" "dunno, but maybe BF2 are born to be slag?" "OFP was a singleplayer game with some multiplayer support added later to the game. Bf is a multiplayer game for the ... socially challenged, who want to vie for e-dominance and ownage, You know the kind of computer nerds who watch pure-pwange. " "not only BF2 looses in most of categories (ignore MP code as OFP/OFPR wasn't primary MP game) ... but it will be funny see how BF2 runs on old XBOX ... " Arghh, *Considers starting vote for new forum rule to stop the words/abbrevations for Battlefield 2 and Flashpoint to be in the same post* Seriously, stop it, for the good of Flashpoint-ness, pleease Just because it's not totaly realistic, doesn't mean the people who play it are idiots.. There are plenty of idiots who play all games.. Not everyone likes completely realstic games, not everyone likes arcadish games.. The comment on Pure-Pwnage, that whole show is a deliberate joke, incase you didn't notice.. You think people on TV act like that when they're not acting? Yes, the media have screwed up, as they do a lot, by seeing "BF2 has real weapons in it, it must be realistic", but the media screws up all the time, for example : http://www.wbns10tv.com/?sec=ho....78.html is one of the most annoyingly misinformed, paranoia inducing articles I've ever read.. If you read a proper gaming magazine, not just a news paper or press release (who'll claim that the game brings the dead back to life if it'll sell more copies, in most cases), you'll see far better informed opinions.. Why? Because those writers are smarter? No, because thats what they do, they play and write about games, so of course their opinion is better.. *Sighs again* *Burns ranting hat* There, no more ranting - Ben

    Linux server setup howto

If it's working, I don't think it matters... Just a random suggestion (to no one in particular), instead of using nohup for keeping the server up, might be an idea to use screen instead.. Basicly, you do (For example) <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">dbr@dbrlt1:~$ screen -L bash dbr@dbrlt1:~$ ./ofpserver Then, once you start the server, hold Ctrl+A, release and type D (detach).. Then screenlog.0 will contatin it, orrr, type screen -r, and you can go back to the terminal you started the server in And other usefull things : Ctrl+A then C creates a new terminal.. Ctrl+A then P or N flicks between terminals.. Usefull when you log in via SSH, so if the network connection dies, you don't lose any running programs.. - Ben

    Comparisons between ArmA and BF2

OFP AND BF2 ARE TOTALY DIFFERENT GAMES Simple as that.. Battlefield 2 is an first-person-shooter, set in a fictious, but inspired by real place, enviroment. It has real weapons, that aren't designed to be perfect recreations, or accruate for that matter. It's designed for entirely for "fun", not as a simulation, it's designed to be used for clan-matches online (Thus all the stat-tracking stuff) OFP is designed as a realistic, much more free-formed game, and to be mod-ed... WHY do people keep comparing these games? Yeh, their both shooters, thats where similaritys stop.. And about the players, the second posts "if your over 17 play Flashpoint" comment is complete cr*p, lots of "older" people play BF2, lots of younger people play OFP.. Some people enjoy BF2, some people prefer games like, some poeple might like both.. *Sigh* *Takes of ranting hat* - Ben

What do you *HOPE* will be in ArmA?

This is OFP, not Max Payne, if you tired firing two uzis, or even two 9mm pistols, you'd know all about it Indeed, but it would be nice to have the abilty to mod the game into being able to use two weapons at once, no? That way you coouuld make a May Payne-ish mod if you so wanted - Ben
