    FWATCH

Opps, did wonder if I got the name wrong Would you consider releasing what you done sofar with the build-menu-system? It seems very impressive, and if people can see what FWATCH can do, maaybe one or two people might be "inspired" to try it Hmm, sounds intersting.. I've though of doing a vaugly similar thing (more along the lines of the Tiberian Genesis mod though, where you build/move people around).. One thing I did do aggees ago (Before FWATCH was created) was to create a little Visual BASIC program that allowed someone to talk from an external program to inside Flaashpoint.. Basicly the VB program wrote a dynamic script, which was executed every second by a looping script.. When the VBtoOFP program got a new message, it wrote a script that was like <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">externalChat globalchat "[Message went here" It had a bit more stuff to make sure the same message wasn't looped, and there was no easy way to talk out of Flashpoint (which is why I gave up on that, I rewrote it when FWATCH was released, but it wasn't terribly usefull, espically when it'd be very difficult to capture all dialouge, which would be confusing for the person using the app..) But, with FWATCH, it should be simple to make the external command program transfer data back and forth (Group positions, and where to move, at a most basic level).. But, the biggest problem I can think of is : How does the client communicate to OFP/FWATCH? It'd either have to be running alt-tab'd, which seems a bit pointless (why not do the command interface in game), or a remote machine, via some form of sockety connection, which then gives the problem of sending the data from OFP, to the server-program, to the client, and dealing with lag and other fun networky stuff If it's done right, how-ever, it could be cool.. Hmm, slightly different idea.. A web-interface (Either image-map, or ideally Flash with shiney zooming maps and waypoints etc) could be cool, you could order groups A/B/C to move to points A/B/C, and the other player (or "commander") orders groups D/E and F to points D/E/F, and instead of having made up semi-random values like a normal 2D game might have, you have real, virtual soldiers running, and attacking the enemy.. Hmm, I might have a go at that one day (The web-commanding-real-virutal-soldiers thing).. - Ben

    Demo

Let me be the first to answer in a non "OMG SEARCH TEH FORUMS FIRST NOOB!"-manner : This has been asked many times before. There is no demo for Armed Assault currently avalible, but I'd be extremely amazed if there was not a demo released between now and the release.. When that is I have no idea (It really needs to be this year IMO, otherwise it will get completely forgotten about by everyone bar current OFP players..) Basicly, not yet, but some time - Ben

    Prey

Fileplanet does indeed suck, but I was using Filefront, that has no queues (most of the time, well, longest time I've seen is 5minutes).. Most of the time speeds are fine.. But the torrent speed was fine The demo was.. strange.. Spoiler :: You start of, an Indian, talking to yourself in a mirror, in an Indian Casino/Pub.. The level ends with you being abducted by aliens.. Onto a spaceship where their.. processing humans, and where gravity random decides to jump upside down, and small boxes that lead to new rooms.. ..strange game - Ben

Any other (ex) Battlefield 2 players?

Acctually I've never not seen a misison get transfered when playing (even the original BIS missions), I assume this is because if it just loaded the same filename on the clients, they could easily change the misson, and add an extra nuclear weapon or two on the map and make it a little unfair.. As for the addon problem, using a single mod on a dedicated server is generally a good idea, if not, OFPWatch auto-addon thing seems to work well.. Hopefully there'll be a dedicated server option in ArmA to tell the clients to download the addons from ftp://xyz.blah.etc or from the server (The external FTP would be usefull, but theoretically you could make them download anything with it, rather than the game only sending PBO files, hm) Anyway, kind of oftopic - Ben

Just how much has OFP affected you?

Laptops! Pretty much any recent laptop will play Armed Assault fine.. Mine used to play OFP better than my desktop (till I upgraded the graphics card) - Ben

    Prey

I'd guess it'll turn out like the F.E.A.R Multiplayer (Nothing special), screwing with gravity could be fun, but don't think it'd be very playable Downloading now.. Filefront is being.. fairly slow, jumping between 70-90kb/s (Should be up around 700kbs..), but only an hour or so left.. It'll be interesting, I wasn't impressed by the E3 footage, but playing it might be better - Ben

OFP photography - Questions & comments

...the white outline..... Selection > Feather > 2 or 3, and hit delete a few times You could possibly sort it with layer blending modes too (screen or hard/soft light, I think would get rid of the white bits) Also, theres no shadows from some of the objects, but there is from the others (like the magazine at the right) - Ben

How realistic do you expect ArmA to be?

Remeber, theres a line between realism, and gameplay.. If you go to far either way, people complain a lot.. I think OFP managed to do a good job of balancing it (For example, if you had to train for years to be able to fly the helis, say, it'd be annoying, and totaly unplayable) I hope ArmA has the same sort of ballance, I could not care less if the M16a2.403 revision 432 has a slightly different shaped trigger guard that wasn't introduced to the 433 revision 2 weeks after the game is set.. - Ben

PC Discussion Thread - All PC related in here.

A large bit of the price for the Alienware PC's isn't hardware, as you said, it's professionaly built, and has nice cabling/airflow and such.. Yes, it's possible to build a computer, but if you don't know a lot about building computers (If it'd be your first computer, DO NOT start of making a $1600 computer.. I'd stronly suggest starting of with the cheapest parts you can find, use spares etc, and learn from your mistakes), having a well made, nicely setup and tested computer, than will give full support, and repairs (for a year, for free as far as I can tell) might make it seem a bit less overpriced.. Plus, the cases are extremely shiney Not that I'd use something like Alienware, but then again, I've put together a bunch of computers, and dismantled/reassembled computers a lot.. luemmel : Case, power supply and cooling stuff! - Ben

What do you *HOPE* will be in ArmA?

    ArmA available for linux ?

Erm, I seriously doubt that will EVER happen.. It makes very little sense, if you force a player to reboot into another OS, just to play your game, on an OS that isn't supported by most games (thus forcing you to redesign a large part of the wheel to make it work), and giving the game(and now OS) even more opertunity to find some reason to screw up (Now not only not-fast-enough hardware will stop the game working, now it has to be compatible with linux to work....) Basicly, the game either comming primary for linx wont happen (It's a stupid idea, too many people have windows to use it, and theres things to run Win apps on linux, but not the other way around..)... BUT, they could make ArmA compatible with WINE.. AFAIK OFP can use OpenGL, as Unreal Tournament does, which has a native Linux installer script on the DVD.. Something like that would work, but I really doubt it will be done.. WINE is far more likely Disclaimery thing : I'm not saying linux is bad, far from it (I use it a lot), but it is NOT a gaming operating system.. Windows has long domainated this, for example, with DirectX.. (Yes I know about OpenGL, but look how realtivly few games use OpenGL compared to DirectX..) Anyway, IMO, the only way ArmA on linux will happen is if it works via WINE - Ben

    Thumb Drive

Only problem is the the registery (or lack of it), althought it is possible, it's been done with Firefox (Google for Portable Firefox) Though that creates another problem : Copy Protection.. Though, personally, I dont' think it'll make the smallest bit of difference (you can install on multiple computers, since theres no way to know if it's the same computer it was installed on etcetc, even Vavles Steam can be put on one machine, then onto another, just not at the same time) It'd be cool to be able to, but I don't think it'll be offical supported.. I suppose you could write two little .reg scripts, one that shoves the CD key and other required stuff in the registery, and one that removes it Possible, but I'm not sure how usefull it'd be.. (ignoring the fact I could just play it on my laptop) any place I might want to play it either has non-admin privelages, so you coudln't install the stuff into the registery (I think, could be wrong, but most places lock you from the regedit, for obvious reasons), and chances are they aren't going to be particularly up-to-date computers, and may not play the game. Any place you might be able to install the registery stuff, you could just install it of the CD/DVD (while it takes a little while, chances are if you want to play the game, you've got a few minutes extra tospare) - Ben

Clone Stamp, set to "Sample All Layers", with a blank layer selected, clone a bit too much, and you can use the eraser tool to remove it (Use a soft brush) Aslong as it's going onto a similar colour background, it's pretty simple to make it look reasonable - Ben

    lag with 6800gt??

It's the drivers that don't like OFP, try older versions, search around, people have recommended specific driver versions for OFP (I assume the 6800GT is an nVidia card, if it happens to be ATI, try the Omega drivers, which is what I use, and they seem to run OFP fine) {Edit : } Read.. Posts.. Better, I just noticed you said you tried older drivers.. There is specific ones that work better, not sure if it's the one you tried.. Other thing to check is background processes, use Adaware, run a virus scan (Then disable the virus scanner when running OFP, could slow it down), use Startup Mechanic to make sure nothing unnessariry is starting up, then reboot.. What anti-virus program/firewall do you use? Anything like Azerus running in the background? (It tends to use a lot of memory/CPU compared to other bittorrent clients, which is a shame ) ..thats all I can think of, wrong drivers, background programs/viruses/spyware.. Oh, one thing, rename (to something like backup_flashpoint.cfg) your OFP/Flashpoing.cfg, and OFP/Users/You/UserInfo.cfg, then rerun the setup utility.. - Ben

OFP photography - Questions & comments

I'm not saying edited screenies are bad, people like them.. For example, porn.. It's "pretty", but theres absoutly no weight to them, "pretty" is all there is to it.. It's (extremely ) popular, but theres not exactly a huge ammount of skill that goes into it.. Exactly the same applies to these screenshots.. Sure, a heavily photoshop'd/DXDLL'd screenshot looks nice, but is there a reason for the plane flying around? Is it fighting? It it just randomly training? If it's just training (Just using this as an example), it exains why theres no enemy planes around, but in a game where you can do anything (It could be fighting giant robots in space if you wanted..), why would you want to see a plane training? But, if it's supposed to be fighting (in a war say), wheres the other planes? Wheres the stuff happening on the ground, the AA guns etcetc..? Helis/planes taking off, fine, but atleast have the next screenshot being when it acctualy gets somewhere "interesting".. Like a little graphic-story-book (if that makes sense) Infantry, I'm not sure, smoke (as you suggested) can add something to it (Forces you to look at the units more than the background, which in OFP tends to be slightly sparse).. *Shrugs* Basicly, my main problem with the thread thing is what would be other-wise dull screenshots, photoshoped to look shinier.. That have no real thought behind them (As to why their doing what their doing) "But if somebody pay attention for another one work/pic - i cant see your point in there..." Again, I'm not saying everyone shoudl stop complimenting each other, it's more people only seem to give a damn about screenshots taken at extremely-high resoultion, no matter if the other screenshots acctualy have a story behind them, and may have been Photoshoped to add too the photo, not be used as the main "wow"ness feature (Like two photos, one that you Photoshop a giant-bannana in, for no reason.. Yes it looks alright, but if you take a photo of something, that has meaning, and a story, surely thats more impressive than fake giant fruit?) - Ben

    Red Alert GUI..

One thing that really bugs me about custom GUIs if not done right : If you press the down arrow, it needs to go in the right order The Y2K3 7.5 had a cool-ish layout for the menu options, but if I pressed down to go to the Multiplayer bit, it would jump the mission editor (Sort of, can't remeber that well).. It works fine with the mouse, but often I just use the arrows/return button to do stuff like that (To host a Mp game, it's up arrow, return twice, for example) Seems like you've taken that into consideration, but it's impossible to tell from screenshots Looks nice though - Ben

    about weapon sway

Basicly : No one knows.. Not untill you have the ArmA box in your hands.. Besides, if the weapon sway is too low, how many minutes do you think it'll be till someone makes a config-mod to make it more realistic..? - Ben

OFP photography - Questions & comments

I never said anything about "being completely serious with no humour or any fun what-so-ever", did I? I mearly stated the fact I dislike the fact this thread has pretty much boils down to those two "comments".. I'm not running around screaming "STOP HAVING FUN AND START BEING SERIOUS".. Far from it, it's simply discussing something - Ben
