I like the battles between the big ships in that game. I used to make missions with the mission editor just so I could watch them fight with those cool beam cannons.

Good gameplay is obviously the most important thing. -
Well you should first try a reinstall and if it doesn't work try deleting the whole Windows folder in DOS with a boot disk.

Either reinstall Windows or delete the whole Windows directory in DOS and then reinstall.
