It's possible and it's easy but you don't have to do it yourself. Kegetys' addon collection has a supply jeep that can carry ammo and weapons.

That's right, but if you need to jump somewhere it's much harder to judge the distance in 1st person (this obviously only applies to games that are designed to be 3rd person).
