Well on this page http://www.armedassault.com/ it clearly says that it is "The ultimate combat simulation". In this context it is not unreasonable to interpret "ultimate simulation" as implying "realistic".

I also have information and pics of a bayonet for the Lee- Enfield No.4 sawn off and modified to hold a bipod. If the Arma engine actually modelled the effect of a bipod I might have done one of those for the 1950s troops I plan to do later on. I also corresponded for a short time with an ex-Royal who mentioned "Marksman" SLRs in NI in the 1970s. Was the "Marksman variant" an NI only issue? Can you say when and where were you issued with yours, Rambo-16AAB?

Basically the Boys ATk rifle was a monster bolt action rifle that fired a steel cored .55 calibre bullet (later ones were tungsten cored). The box magazine held five of the huge rounds, and the Boys team's no.2 man carried at least 120 further rounds. It could penetrate the armour of all tanks of the 1930s and early 1940s but quickly became obsolete for that purpose early on in the war. Modern tests indicate that it could penetrate about 12.5mm of armour plate at about 450m to 500m range. The gun weighs about 16.5 kg (36 lb). It was not popular with the troops because of its weight, the noise and muzzle flash and the huge recoil. In the WW2 British training manuals users are warned about the recoil, which could cause "whiplash" injuries to the necks of careless firers. It was usually nicknamed "Charlie the Bastard" Commandos used it more creatively than just as an anti armour weapon. It was very effective in both the "anti materiel" and anti-personnel roles. Typical uses were attacking trucks, fortified positions, concrete pillboxes and parked aircraft. Â For example, during one commando raid in N. France a German flak gun which opened fire on the commandos was knocked out with Boys anti tank rifle fire. They were also used (along with machine guns) to defend commando assault boats against enemy patrol vessels. It was also very effective as an anti-personnel weapon since it could punch through some forms of cover. There are also reports of it being fired at enemy hiding among rocks and casualties being produced by the rock splinters chipped off. The LRDG and SAS in N. Africa used it mounted on vehicles which reduced the recoil. I had intended to do some LRDG and SAS addons in phase 2 of this project but now that there are at least two other mods trying to do the N. African theatre in WW2 I may not actually bother any more.

    Burning Sands: Africa '42

Your British weapons are rather untypical for your chosen period and theatre. Neither the Sten machine carbine nor the No. 4 rifle were on widespread issue in N. Africa in 1942. 2nd Army in N.W. Europe had priority for both these weapons. Only 1st Para Bde had them on general issue in N. Africa (in Algeria and Morocco) at the very end of 1942. Otherwise, only a very few were used in N. Africa (particularly by 78th Inf Div of 1st Army - formed in May 1942 - in Tunisia). 8th Army, for example, never got Stens issued at all until 1944.

Another somewhat unusual weapon (WIP) for the Commandos of SPECIAL SERVICE - Phase 1; .55 inch Boys anti-tank rifle. Originally designed as an anti armour weapon but actually used by real life WW2 British Commandos for destroying enemy vehicles, boats, parked aircraft and gun emplacements. I am trying to get a website up dedicated to this and the SPEARHEAD project, so anyone who is interested can follow their progress there. I will post the URL here when it comes on-line. I shan't post much else in this forum about it any more.

    WW2 Afrika

Who cares if any one else "likes the idea"? If you want to make it, then make it (it's not as if you'll be selling it, is it?). I'm already working on British stuff for the Middle East theatre in World War 2, but I never felt the need to ask first if I should.

    Ukrainian army truck - KRAZ

Nice truck. How long, approximately, would you estimate it took you to make that? And please may I ask what sort of tank that is at the top of your mod's webpage (it appears beside a photo of the real tank for comparison)? Is it a T-64, by any chance?

OK, cool; so now I get a chance to make a mil-dot reticule. I'll knock up a model and post a screenie here soon for your appraisal. I've been turning up some weird stuff looking for info on 'scoped SLRs with bipods. How does this monstrosity grab you? Â I also have a report (from the late 1960s) about GPMG bipods mounted on SLR bayonet handles with the blades sawn off (attach the bipod by fixing the bayonet)!
  11. So, vilas, are you volunteering as the one who researches, collates and publishes all this data? I agree some consistency would be very good, but who's going to be in charge?

    Spearhead

Thanks for the pics. Now that I see it, the Lee-Enfield Enforcer my old dad was issued had the same bipod (and a similar-looking 'scope - the Enforcer used a Pecar VS2 which is not very likely to be what your rifle had I suppose). If I give the rifle in your second pic the correct flash hider would that be more or less it? What reticule did the 'scope use? A post reticule similar to  THIS? edit: Yes, plenty of photos on the FAL files site but most of the 'scoped ones tend to be built up from all sorts of kit parts.

    Spearhead

If the Flashpoint model is accurate then yes it'd be a start at least. What sort of 'scope did these things use?

I only have an indistinct photo of that variant too (and the rifles in it are cammed up to boot) which is why I haven't attempted it. If you do find any useful stuff on it then I'd be delighted to add it to the set. I've "tidied up" and corrected the SLR models a bit since those screenshots in the original post were taken. They'll be the "standard" armament so they have to be right.

When the time comes, give me a shout and I'll finish up/make new vehicles for you if you want. Yes, shame to let that vast fleet of Landies you made go to waste too! The weapon models do need quite a bit of work still but I'll happily take you up on the offer. I'm working on (read: struggling with) a website for this and the SPECIAL SERVICE Commando project, so I'll post a linky here when it's all ready. Â Â Like I said I'm taking it in "easy" stages so the very first release will be an infantry section in fighting order circa 1985 wearing no.8 combat dress ("woodland" to you Yanks) and Mk.3 "noddy suits". A similar one from 1975 (ie. in '68 patt DPM, puttees, "boots, cardboard" and tin tobys) will follow shortly after and the rest will proceed smoothly from there (or at least that's the plan). @helping_hand: I had a prototype of the SMG and its config working in Op Flashpoint already. Just like the real thing: useless for anything at any decent sort of range, but great for CQB. And a nice change from Uzis or Hocklers in the game! @r0adkill: Yes, my favourite rifle too, by a long way, and 30rd mags will be included (there is a rough start at one in the screenshots) @MehMan: UKF are dedicated to doing ultra-modern stuff, so I doubt that they'd have the resources or the desire to do the older stuff that I'd need. sniperuk02 already has these well covered in any case.
  18. Col. Faulkner

    Special Service

Yes, 10 Commando will be included at some point, but initially I have to "aim small", so phase 1 will be a modest addon set for small scale raids. The De Lisle, Welrod and Sten MkIIs are all under construction but none of these were historically available, of course, before 1942.

    Health system

It's interesting to consider the purpose of real life medics. They are not really there to patch men up so they can "continue the mission", they are there to try to prevent them from dying of their wounds. This is not really relevant in this game since few game campaigns (if any) model such continuity or try to carry over the same characters from one mission to the other. With this in mind it might even be better to dispense with "medics" altogether from the game and have "wounded" men in ArmA just react in a variety of ways that  range from "toughing it out" (for a while, anyway) through lying quietly to rolling around screaming for their mothers.      The problem with this though, is that the AI shooters are all marksmen, there is hardly any real cover for a human player to duck down behind on the terrain (forget all about AI being able to use cover properly), it is almost impossible to make the enemy "keep their heads down", body armor and ballistic helmets are not modelled properly, and one cannot dig in. So the usual measures a real soldier uses to avoid stopping a bullet do not really apply in the game. This is one of the reasons why getting shot can't really have the same serious repercussions on peformance in the game as it does in reality, otherwise the game would get very frustrating. I admit I've often had to call the medic bod over to help me stand up again after getting stung on the leg by one of those pesky 7.62 FMJ high velocity bullets but I hate it and I know it's really crap.     However, some sort of "carry your buddy" device would be a valuable addition. The "crawl 300 yards to get to the heli with tomato ketchup all over one's legs" situation as I was forced to witness during the lame-arsed "speshul forces" mission in the ArmA campaign (before I abandoned it totally) really needs to go!

    AK4

Thank you. I suspected it was something like that. Other systems are only confusing if you don't use them correctly. For example it's "Rifle Caliber .30 M1" not "M1 Grand [sic]". NATO (and British Commonwealth) countries also use NSNs of course which remove all confusion.

Warzaw Pact Army Symbols and Markers

These are very neatly done and I can see them being useful for one of my future projects. The problem with them though is that there doesn't seem to be any sort of legend provided with them to describe what the symbols mean. Could you maybe make an annotated version of the WAPA1.jpg?
