Well, even if nothing else eventually comes out of all this, I'm absolutely determined to finish the SLRs (and other weapons). Small arms addons are a whole lot simpler to do than human figures, I've found Â

The Lost Brothers -Isaac and Ishmael Mod

Perhaps, but it wouldn't look right. The MAG, not the M240. Some were using that gun for nearly 40 years before the USA finally adopted it too. Surely there must be tons of pics of "MAGistim! The IDF MAGs were just bog-standard Belgian types. I think "Vilas" has a gun that'll suit. -

I'd understood that the Egyptian AKs were actually quite good (by Kalashnikov knock-off standards, anyway). Is "Vilas" currently redoing your IMI 50.00 FAL, then (I hope I didn't assemble all that reference info for nothing)? Converting that to the 50.41 consists largely of remodelling the muzzle device and adding a bipod (in the Israeli variant anyway). If you're really stuck I guess I might be able to model those parts for you and stick them onto "Vilas'" IMI 50.00 if you have the MLOD for it. -
alien scorpion ready !

I only need to know one thing...where...they...are... -
Is it an alien UCAV, or something?

Well, after much swearing and hair-pulling I have now managed to get one of my soldier models into the game (British infantry of 1975-1980 in Fighting Order) These are all original except for the BIS head and hands. Unfortunately, trying to do original models has brought with it all sorts of trouble as I try to make them fit the ArmA soldier anims. I am having terrible problems trying to get them to behave properly when animated. After a struggle I have now managed to get them at least somewhat human-looking (ie. no more hands like "The Thing" and their legs no longer look like they belong to someone else when they run), but, as it is, there is still some truly horrific distortion in places. There's also a weird problem where the gunsmoke and cartridge case ejection appear at ground level (this after two days spent trying to get him to actually hold his friggin' SLR!?) And I thought I was nearly finished these, and was ready to finally start texturing them *cries* I'm supposing that I need to revise my selections...or something... to fix these distortions. I console myself with the thought that once I've got one figure working fine then the other figures should (comparatively) be a doddle. If there are any experts on this who would like to offer some technical support, I'd be more than grateful. I've spent so long on these things (all the weapons too) that I don't really want to have to give up on them now.

alternative history WWII 1952
Col. Faulkner replied to WingedSerpent1969's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
The scenario is crazy (biological weapons aren't really that effective) but making some 1950s equipment and some of the experimental things might be interesting. BTW I already made a couple of EM-2s (No.9 Mk 1 and its arctic variant). -

Is the "tiny" model there actually physically smaller than the "humus" one? I think you mean "SVT 40 rifles pretending to be Hakim rifles" -
alien scorpion work in progress
Col. Faulkner replied to colonel well's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Yes, it's very good. It certainly doesn't look like a guy in a costume, now! I know you are calling it an "alien scorpion" but some ancient eurypterids on Earth were actually as big as that thing you've made there! Have you a plan for using it in a campaign or anything? With the walking arthropod anims working you could do lots of other things; giant spiders or trilobites or cockroaches or even more bizarre aliens, for example. -
Well, your personal view means little in the face of German law. But, fair enough, I won't raise the point again.
-
Aren't the swastika markings on your Heinkel going to cause problems for your German fans (and German addon sites)?

ArmA Addon request thread
Col. Faulkner replied to raedor's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Don't you know there is lots of people who like old vehicles? Hercules is an old vehicle too. They were designed in 1950. A creaky old DC3 would be fine for the Sahrani skydivers club, I suppose but for serious military use? Come on! -

The hands and feet make it look like a guy wearing a "scorpion" costume. -
Is there a way to disable mipmapping on a particular texture, or at least to reduce it? I'm making a rifle target addon with an image on it, but the default mipmapping makes the image go blurry and out of focus very quickly as you walk away from it. You can observe the same effect with any of the BIS roadsigns. I'd like it if I could make the image stay sharp[er] out to 100 BIS metres or so.

I wish there were an RAF Jaguar GR.1 or a Harrier GR.3 addon. -
What do you mean "louder"? (of sound) strongly audible; having exceptional volume or intensity You know exactly what I meant. Forget I asked.

Did "Afrographix" make the Chinook for the OFP Falklands mod?

The only one I have to hand right now is this one (public domain image): I don't know if these are official issue, or COTS or otherwise obtained (I'm not totally up to speed on the present-day kit). But they're certainy in use to some extent. FWIW I can show you a picture of the older steel box. These are basically meant as a patrol pouch for a short (eg. 50 rounds) teaser belt (you could actually cram 65 rounds into the steel box). The steel box was designed to hinge open so the No.2 could clip extra link onto the end of the length currently on the feed tray (in theory anyway). Even with loose belts you'd never really get more than 50 round lengths in the light role - any longer and they're awkward and have a tendency to dislodge rounds and cause loss and stoppages.

It is true that modern gun nuts have made some hideous monstrosities out of the elegant and coldly-warlike FAL design, however no military service rifles have been "hybrids". A "hybrid" of metric and inch pattern FAL rifle parts generally requires some "blacksmithing" - but is irrelevant in a military context anyway. I dislike the "HWM" FALS because they totally (and comically) fail to give the impression (even within the game engine's considerable limitations) of firing an FN FAL-style rifle, nor are they authentic models of Greek army rifles, nor are the physical details and texture art anything to enthuse over. However, I'm not going to go into that any more in this thread. Having just tried out Vilas' latest ones, I think they are better in that they have a recoil that roughly approximates the "feeling" (again within game engine limitations, of course) of firing the rifle and a decent sound. They do have mistakes in detail apparent to anyone who really knows these rifles but they are fine for players (presumably the majority, but excluding myself and apparently "Grim Fandango") who just want something that looks basically like a FAL to shoot with in the game. They fit right in with the "house style" of the "Lost Brothers" mod, for example, so I can appreciate "Miles Teg's" enthusiasm for them.

Where did the cockpit textures come from? The cockpit is from an RAF HC.1 from the Falklands War. The radio call label reads "Bravo November". ZA718 "Bravo November" was one of only two helis to survive the sinking of Atlantic Conveyor.

That's a nice M1 model - please do a good job of texturing that (and please add its operating rod handle - it'd be useless IRL like that   ).

There exists a green plastic clip-on ammo box for the GPMG. There are photos of it in use in Afghanistan. The one in your screenshot is pretty close. There also used to be a steel 50 round clip-on ammo can for the GPMG (heavy, awkward, rattly as hell and un-popular but nevertheless sometimes used - I think they were originally intended for use in the jungle). There were also jury-rigged affairs using old pouches (useful for keeping your link clean when slogging across the Irish bogs and also good for avoiding a fine if you lost any rounds). Apart from the carrying handle, of course. That style hasn't been used on British guns since the X15 trials guns in the late 1950s. Your model actually looks more like an Australian gun. Those "HWM" FALs are an utter travesty. I nearly fell off my chair laughing when I tried one of them. "Vilas" here has made some FAL addons too, but I haven't tried them since several revisions ago. They may be better than those "HWM" ones.

I am doing the PIAT I promised you. It is still in a very early stage of development, though. I can't churn these things out so it'll take a little time. I'll do some LODs and a basic grenade launcher config for it, but you can texture it yourself (I can't do that sort of stuff very well).

you don't need a firefly. Yes you do need a firefly.
