Basically to have a good tactical experience online you need to be a part of certain communities. ShackTactical, TacticalGamer, 6th Sense and ArmAGoons are some of those.I know and have looked at these groups (was actually a supporting member of TG for a while there).
Shacktactical requires too much of a time commitment , TG's ArmA2 server pings too high (>250 most of the time)..the others I'm not familiar with.
Agree that a closed server with a few well known friends is the ideal if you want MP.
-
i thought it was the other way around, most people come to play online and nothing else :)Might be.. I really don't know... only assuming
-
There must be thousands (??) of ArmA2 owners who never go online but simply enjoy the game in SP mode. If their experiences are anything like mine, they don’t venture online very often.
So far I’ve tried 5 servers that ping <100 to me a few times and the odd time I’ve found anyone else on them all they wanted to do was take off somewhere, fly, drive, shoot or blow things up. They didn’t even respond to typed in text messages for the most part (just in case they didn’t have VON on).
Not a hope in hell of trying to organize any type of game there.
I know there are servers out there that offer post- pubescent game play but the ones I know about (ie TG) ping in the high 100’s to low 200’s and others are run by “tribes†(clans??) who promise mature game play .I really don’t have the time to be bothered with a clan nor do I wish to be subordinate and do silly things like “salute†or say “sir†to a virtual ranking officer who got his rank simply because he joined the group early and assigned it to himself.
And I REALLY don’t want to have to rely on TS , Ventro etc. for communications.
Don’t mind taking orders, learnt how to do that during my tenure, but when I saluted and said “yes SIR†it was to an officer I knew (or at least assumed :p) he/she had at least SOME tactical and strategy training.
So, I’m not overly enthralled with online MP. If I want to run around shooting things there are plenty of other FPS’s out there that offer a fast, shoot ‘em up atmosphere and can be loads of fun. Actually more fun than ArmA2 if you want to play that way.
SP on the other hand, especially with the new AI , the editor and some custom downloaded scenarios, is phenomenal for the most part. Sure the AI have their problems sometimes but my god, after my few online experiences, they aren’t anywhere near as bad (dumb) as a lot of human online players. They at least follow orders , you can set up a firing line ,converge your fire , call in support (there’s always an AI wiling to oblige for the most part) etc. etc.
Maybe later on this fall I’ll try MP somewhere online again. There MUST be a group of like minded individuals out there SOMEWHERE who want to play ArmA2 the way it was meant to be played, not how so many other FPS’s are played.
I obviously haven’t found them yet though.
For the time being though, nothing like an early morning romp through the woods with your virtual buddies looking for the bad guys (and hoping that random tank you created in the editor hasn’t appeared because you forgot to assign one of your squad members a HAT weapon).

This is on the site...
I've don't think I've ever come across most of the problems fixed. They seem to be more MP or campaign oriented.
I'm having way too much fun in the editor learning stuff and with some custom missions I downloaded to bother with MP or the campaigns.
Think , at least for me , the ability to play without having to constantly find and insert the disc makes sticking with the latest beta patch a little more enticing than installing the full 1.4 patch right now.
Want to wait until they fix some of the game play flaws (ie roll grenades , AI improvements etc.).
-
If you could chuck grenades underhanded for more accuracy at close range (ie trying to put one through a door) that would be nice .. please!!

almost identical question yesterdayOoppss.. found the post your referring to.. :o
Odd it didn't show up in my search but maybe I didn't use the right wording...:o

I'm just wondering.
When I start ArmA2 I include various mods/addons etc.
When in the editor , are these mods/addons included automatically or do I have to script them somehow to include them?
When (or if) I create a final PBO file , will they be included and become a required add on or do I have to specify this?
Confused???
So am I. :o ;)

Looks good unfortunately its in German. Should mention that I suppose.

I just installed an AI Dispersion mod and am playing a downloaded custom mission.
Apparently this mod is supposed to increase the dispersion of AI fire , especially over long distances , but I don't really notice any difference.
Question is when you install and use a mod , is it supposed to effect all the games (ie Campaign / BIS scenarios etc) or simply those scenarios you create in the editor?
Another question but it's best in the modding/editing forum.
-
The higher difficulty settings only allow one save per mission. Lower your difficulty unless you're one of those crazy people that enjoys frustration ;)How in the hell did you ever figure that out?? :p (god I wish we had a decent manual)....
and..the Alt/Tab I'm definitly going to be using... txs.. :)

Unit skill as set in editor has little to no effect on AI shooting (and spotting) performanceThink he's saying that no matter what you set the skill levels at in the editor , the config file values are used so there's no sense in adjustnig the skill levels of the AI in the editor as the levels are meaningless.
If that's true it DEFINITELY needs to be fixed.

Tried searching and got lots of "load/save games = CTD" but nothing specific about simply not being able to save a game.
Playing a custom scenario I downloaded and was about to sneak into a town and had spotted several sentries. After about 10 minutes of creeping from tree to tree one of the AI merrily stood up , holler "HERE WE ARE" and shot one of the sentries. (forgot to set them to "hold fire") All hell broke loose and I had to reload a game that takes me way back..
This time I crept up and went to save so when I reload I wont have to transport over miles again but it's grayed out. Can't save.
Is this a problem with ArmA2 , the module or what?
Is there a fix?
BTW - loading saved games so far hasn't caused the CTD.

One of the BIGGEST differences between ArmA2 and VBS2 is the way they are played.
ArmA2 is played like a game and disobeying an order or running off somewhere to do your own thing is run of the mill.
VBS2 is a military sim and if you are told to do something and you don't , you suffer the wrath of the OIC of the sim exercise.
Apart from the price differential which gives you , as mentioned , at least a damn manual so you know what all the commands mean and do , there's enough realism and addons to make ArmA2 more than most players could handle if they played it as a sim rather than a glorified FPS.
-
Yep - "regroup" and they'll follow you ... but at a safe distance because most players tend to bumble around in the bushes and draw fire so the AI want to be as far away as possible..they ain't all that dumb. :p :D
-
That works for an assigned destination but what I want , in High Command, is the ability to have the chopper drop me off wherever I want (easily done) then , by going to the map , send it to a way point to wait for me.
This can be done if I set a way point way over on the other side of the map as I have time to set the way point (always seems to be a move to) then I can click on the way point and assign an action to it. (IIRC it "unload" and the crew gets out and the engine shuts down).
Trouble with it being too far away is I have to then hoof it to order the crew to get in then assign a move way point and tell my men to get in.
If it's too close , it simply vanishes as the chopper heads towards it and I can't assign any actions to it.

Argh!! 93 pages and all I want to know is..will the expansion be available on DVD or just as a down load?
Doh!! And there was my answer right in the very first post.
A real Homer Simpson moment for sure....
(note to self..at least bother to read the first few pages before you ask dumb questions... :o

Just wondering if the change log reflects ALL the work being done to patch the game or if there's other items not included such as fixes/adjustments to the AI as mentioned numerous times in the forums , bugs in the campaign and scenarios as mentioned in the forums etc. etc.
Are these being worked on in the background with the intention of releasing them with the full patch or might they be added to the beta patch at a later date.

Jeezus and I thought these forums were full of mature people while you're all whining and bellyaching because he has a complaint about how BIS dumped the thing out there and left the COMMUNITY to figure out how to use it.(the game , the editor and the tool set).
I agree with the OP and all the references to all the various WIkI's and web sites are indicative of how poorly this thing was prepared for release.
Thanks to all who bothered giving a reasonable response (yes there were some) because they saved me from having to ask the very same basic question , that's why I came in and read the comments here in the first place.

I think that more than a few graphical glitches , what about being a Lieutenant leading a squad and having some grunt (Corporal ) telling you to "move".
Talk about insubordination !!!
All in all I'd have to say that in their attempt to instill a sense of realism into the game they went way overboard and virtually destroyed the atmosphere.
Got a chopper pilot looping the "target that something or other" line all the time we were circling to land. I had to turn the volume down it was so damn annoying. Would have shot the bugger except you cant use your weapons inside a chopper.
-
Nothing spoils the immersion factor more that trying to carefully advance on a position and having to listen to endless "go" , "Move" , I'll cover" babble from the AI.
In RL you don't talk to the CO unless you've got something important to say and you DEFINITELY don't try and give the CO an order.
Whose brain fart of an idea was it to have the AI constantly chattering (spamming) messages?
We DESPERATELY need a "for gods sake shut up" command! (or a mod that will mute the things).

After due consideration felt that if anyone wanted to know what I found out they can search the other forum instead of me dredging it up in here.

how about a simple reply to that thread. "how did you solve it"Because odds are after he's solved the problem he's not going to bother revisiting his thread.
Suppose a PM would work though.

Many thanks for clearing up BOTH of my problems. :)
Think I'll set my signature line to "Got a problem-read the friggin manual--oh wait --there isn't one is there ?" :D

I have 4 rifle squads attached to my High Command but all I see is 4 nifty little NATO symbols but absolutely no way of identifying them.
I gave each squad a distinct name when I created them but can't seem to find a way to locate a specific squad on the map.
Is there a way?
Little things that make the AI great at times...

Well I was playing a mission (one I downloaded) and being an old CoD/BF2 player , had my squad run over to take up their positions. Didn't wanna waste a whole lot of time just setting up the ambush. Lets get at it. Rock and Roll!!
Well , non of them made it. They were all picked off as the ran over to their appointed positions by AK's, couple of heavy MG,s and a sniper or two.
After giving it some though (and dwelling a wee bit on some of the training I'd received in the KOCR's) I:
1) ordered the entire squad into prone with a caution and a hold fire command for good measure.
2) sent them SLOWLY crawling to their allotted positions where I heard "ready" , "target acquired" etc.
3) watched the enemy patrolling the area and waited until they made their turn so they were facing away form us (this would make it harder and take longer for them to acquire our positions).
4) gave the "open fire" ("weapons free" the voice said ) and in the crackling gun fire all the AI went down and we only had one wounded which the medic took care of.
Gawd i love this game - especially in SP. Gotta be one of THE best out there , even with it's quirky bugs. :)
