    Female Soldier (beta wip)

No. It's supposed to be a woman model heavily edited from A1 sample character.
  2. Thank you Sirex, hopefully I can test it in the following days.

ARMA 2 (OA) : DLC discussion thread

First of all welcome to the forums. Second thing you don't like DLCs, you don't buy them, also BI included lite version. By Addon do you mean Expansion pack? Like Operation Arrowhead? Because that contains what you told about - big new maps, many new features. That, as you saw it took almost a year's work, so nothing such will be out within the following 6 months at least. On DLC: yes, CoD and likenesses have very small and relatively expensive dlc packages, but the ones made by BI are below them in price and way over them in content, I think you can agree with it. In the time of good old gaming there were no DLCs because of the lack of bandwith the internet could offer, at that time it was mainly good for communication and browsing. Thus if a game company wanted to expand one of their titles they had to make expansion packs, with today's internet capabilities it's faster and cheaper (no disc manufacturing) for them to do this. So I don't think it's a big problem BI decided to go this way with their titles. And as with other DLCs (like in the case of Fallout 3's) I'm sure in time there will be an ArmA 2 CO "Gold" edition which will bundle not only the two DVD titles but probably the DLCs released up until that time. But I'm sure you understand that a 470 Mb (BAF) or a 990 Mb (PMC) sized addon on it's own doesn't worth an own DVD nowadays. Also, BI takes ideas from ACE mod from time to time (backpack system, CWS, weapon zeroing, laser rangefinders) - even some models are purchased (SCAR). Somewhat understand your points, but CWC is CWC, it's done. You can replay it any time you like. But if people at BI don't want to double cross their clients, then they have to keep up some diversity in their products, at least in the campaign. Now it's some people wants a campaign that goes like CWC, but what do you thimk the reaction would be? "OMG they recycled the original CWC campaign, how noob are they, shame on dem, I'm nut gonna buy anything moar from BI!" And it's good that not every campaign is the same as the previous, this way you can have another experience from the same genre. Ok, first why is it a shame that a company tries to protect it's product? Do you remember what happened to Arma 1 mlods? Second, isn't there already more than enough tutorials about sqfs and mission makings?

    Idea For Map Sizes

Zargabad and Takistan maps are located tens (if not hundreds) of kms away from each other if I recall correctly (from the big Takistan map). I don't think this "giving a new piece of land from the same area" would pay off, as DLCs have to show some kind of diversity; they have to differ in the added faction, the content, the backstory and of course the "playground" it has. There's a lot of bitching about DLCs already, and they deliver not only new map but new units, weapons, vehicles, campaigns/missions, new voices...Imagine how much of that sh*t would blow into BI's face if they'd do 9 DLCs in a row with just parts of the same area to make a (let's say) 9x9 new map...
  5. Nice reskins Vilas, I really like them :)

    TSC Mi-8 Pack v1.0

Very nice job Plague, good additions to all of the sides, especially for the PMCs which are lacking some must-have vehicles (some Grizzly like APC/MRAP for example). I'd say if you're not into model making, I agree with you that A1 mlods wouldn't worth to throw out a Mi-8 without back door, also with the current game possibilities it wouldn't add any benefit, only a visual feature. Thank you for this work of yours.
  7. @Leon, Attorney, thank you very much Attorney, if I wouldn't face marriage within the next one year I probably would go for the maximum I could get, but as this business comes with compromises, I have to trade-off a bit on ambitions :)
  8. I'm planning to get a new config in the early autumn, and I looked for some parts (CPU, VGA, ect...) and benchmarks. Now I have Segal-syndrome (too much information). Can someone dim me up if is there a big performance difference in ArmA 2 between Core i5 and i7 CPUs? Judging by benchmarks (found on youtube mainly) I was first going to i7 870, but a friend told me I'd be good with an i5 750 or 760, as they are much cheaper and performance difference is very little. I'm tempering to go with overclocking too, both i5 and i7 seemingly can take it well. I'm not on a giant budget, so right now I think I'll go with the cheaper i5, but I'd like to know how much "craft" should I loose in ArmA 2 if I skip the i7.

    Just Bought A 6870

Seems like from this that 5870 has slightly better performance.
  10. Read through, F2F said it'll have proper cargo scripts. Good to see you decided to pick up Sgt. Flyer's project, seems it landed in proper hands.

    DLC Standards

Yeah well I'm happy I could make you laugh. Did you notice the word "supposed"? @CarlGustaffa Yeah, I meant 4x4, not 2,96x2,96 :) I understand perfectly that bigger maps need more time to develop, I don't cry for a 500 km2 big map in a DLC,, but with this object density and setting, it could have been a little bit bigger I think. It's just my opinion, but I can put it to somewhere out of reach of children and sunlight if you wish so :) Don't want to hurt BI mapmakers, but at first sight it didn't seem they worked 3-4 months developing this map, didn't know that craters and bumps were such harder to make. @Crunchie Sorry, as I'm not a native English speaker I don't think I understand it what you mean? But if I understand you correctly, then my answer is, mind the quality of course, and devs should not go under the quality of BAF. All I wanted to say is that PMC is not that bad DLC, but doesn't reach up to BAF. It was just an unfortunate thing they released it after BAF, maybe if PMC would have been first then it wouldn't get this kind of bad light.

    DLC- What do YOU want?

@Vilas I don't know if you ever played Combat Mission Shock Force, the few maps I've seen in that aren't too much bigger than Shapur. Now looking from the editor this map looks small, but to with the layout of it I think there is a potential for good smaller light/mechanized/motorized infantry missions, and it's not very much suited for attack chopper/air assault/conventional armor warfare. For a small DLC it's very good I say, it wasn't made for as long time as Takistan/Chernarus.
  14. Also little bug that BAF hand grenades cannot be selected with the mod, think it has to be defined in OAC config?....
  15. Looks better, really? How can it be possible? :D Will try it ASAP, thanks for the update.
  16. Well, possibly a variable from an init line, and activated when reaching a certain waypoint, because landing AAVs/LAVs would probably come ashore at different times, so the "lock inside APC" might better be deactivated individually to avoid late comers giving a bath for their passengers. My workaround for this problem was to place the passenger "team" far away, then used a "moveincargo" command for one of the waypoints for the LAV. Also, LAVs seemingly has a higher tendency to drop their units at first contact than AAVs.

    Campain quality in ARMA

Well, I agree with Jakerod that CWC wasn't utterly realistic, it was very good back then because it was the very first, unusual to other gaming experiences at that time. Also, CWC campaign was a big, long tutorial up to almost the mission where you had to take off and navigate your A-10 with Capt. Nichols in the cockpit. Everything was new, you can't bring back the very fist feelings, just like MoHAA or CoD can't bring back its very first glamorous feelings by now, except for those who get to play video games for the first time. In my country there's a phrase/saying for this situation, "Every joke is new only for the newborn". In fact, CWC campaign was much more black/white style -crazy, bloodthirsty, psycho Russian general whose (private) army of likely bloodthirsty soldiers slaying the local population for no apparent other reason but because they are evil commies in a need to slay unarmed, begging people, but naive, humanitarian, indigant, US soldiers come to their rescue. Voice acting and conversation lines were also deemed childish and bad by many (no swearing at all? calling the other "meathead"? come on...) . Also that there are 40+missions, some of them can be played out in 5-6 minutes, there are few actually long missions I can remember, about 10 maybe out of the 40 (played through CWC at least 5 times). I think that the biggest factor in CWC being the "etalon" for all campaigns came after was the shock value it was bearing to players (and I'm still under its influance since 2001). I think it's a mistake to judge later campaigns if one don't strip this effect from himself/herself. With the Armed Assault campaign BI tried to change the black/white setting to a more grey area, although for some reason left unanswered (rushed release? lack of conception and time?) it was left untapped, then cut away with the statement that the attacking RACS at the end was indeed a modern version of Skorzeny's commandos, SLA dressed in chocolate chips to make confusion (which is on the other hand would be a very cunning and beleivable tactic to happen). Rahmadi conflict was highly inconceivable for me: why wasting foot soldiers on a tiny island to blow up enemy stuff when with two F-15E Strike Eagles all that crap could be blown off from the surface of the planet? But there were nice touches in that too (enemy agents disguised as civilians among the population in the last mission on Porto). Queen Gambit's story a lot found unbelievable (good prince chased away by evil sister princess and later helped to throne by mercs), but not counting the happy ending (even was a bad ending if I remember), story like this happened in real life not once, where a benevolent leader was betrayed in a form by scummy, power-hungry people. Overally I liked that campaign. Arma 2's Harvest Red is a nice, finished all-round story, with a bit of black/white balanced with grey if you listen enough. You have the turd Chedaki laying waste and hate in a country torn by civil war, but you have on the other side NAPA, who also has their hands bloody on the local Russian population. From the player's point of view, you can decide if you lower your moral standards and recruit them for your help, or to list them equally unlawful as the Chedaki and bust them where you can. You can also go send the CDF to f- themselves for their dillettantiness, or can be work with them with a mutual respect. Also, contrary what most people beleive, the Russians are not the bad guys in this scenario, but rather a victim of trickery, and seemingly the valid peacekeepers. On a sidenote, most people think that in A2 the USMC and the Russian Army are balanced, well that's an utter bullsh*t I can tell you. Try to compare their vehicles and you'll se what I mean, except for Abrams of course, but BMP-3, BTR-90 against AAV-7, LAV-25? Or Tunguska against Avenger Humvee? Or flying tank Szu-34 against F-35 with two bombs and two Sidewinders? I think considering the equipment only the ranking would be (starting with the weakest) NAPA -> CHDkZ -> CDF -> USMC -> AFRF. I didn't play through OA and the two DLC's campaign yet, so I don't judge them. All in all, you can't expect that you'll be "shocked" again like the first time you contacted the world of OFP, it just won't happen. Try to look at things from more than one point of view, or if you still don't like, go ahead and make something better. P.S. fun fact: the voice of Pvt./Cpl./Lt. David Armstrong, Jonah Lotan also plays Navy Hm2 Robert Timothy 'Doc' Bryan in the TV series Generation Kill
  18. Nice script idea, will test it! I would like to ask if it's possible to add a function into it that prevents mounted infantry to dismount in certain situations, I was trying to make an amphibious landing mission but when the swimming vehicles contacted some infantry on the beaches they started to drop their grunts into the water...I mean in vanilla, not with this script of yours.
  19. I remember in Close Combat First to Fight there was a command where you gave a "suppressive fire" command, and the team SAW gunner unleashed a 5-10 sec burst on an area, there was something similar in Full Spectrum Warrior. I think a "press space-order suppressive fire" feature would be really nice, only problem that Arma 2 units would probably use up their ammunition much more faster, ammo and resupplying was much more in the aforementioned games. But it would be nice, also a realistic option.

    DLC Standards

I agree with you up to the point that with BAF BIS had set a standard for DLCs (as it was the first ever DLC to a Bohemia Interactive product), a pretty high standard I think, and PMC is under it. But... PMC is still not that bad piece, it's just doesn't reach BAF in content and multiplayer value. The main feature for PMC is supposed to be the SP campaign, which I didn't play through yet, so I won't tell how good is that, there are reports some like it very much and some committing uncontrollable vomiting because of it. Maps need time to develop, big maps need more time, don't expect a 10 euro DLC would contain a 100km2 new terrain made in 3 months. Proving grounds map is interesting and has a new atmosphere differing from previous A2 maps, although at this level of object density it could have been at least 2 times bigger. Addonmakers don't sit and wait what's going to be in the next DLC to complement it, they all do their own stuff in their own freetime. The two DLCs arrived approx within 4 months from the first rumors, and within 3 months from official announcements. This surely isn't enough time for community modders to develop, test and release stuff for DLCs. For the contents, they usually have been announced well before release, so people got a quite exact idea on what they will get their hands on. And if not, they have the lite versions in the patches so they can see what they miss.

    Unleash the MLODs!

Sorry I write this without reading through the whole thread, gotta go to bed. I think it's not a need to hurry and release every available MLOD that BIS has right now, but as ArmA 2 content probably won't be upgraded to OA standards (IR/TI mainly), BI should consider to release the MLODS from A2 only in the near future, to let the community more easily edit them to the new standards.
  22. Well, rifle/pistol magazine/UGL grenade that is inserted in the weapon is also present in the inventory. So I guess that's why the one-shot launchers still have a magazine occupying half of the magazine slots.
  23. Well Addonmakers do their stuff, either for themeselves, for a group they MPing with or for the wide community. It's not only true for OFP/ArmA series. They of course have positive (in cases: bigger attention to details, better models/textures, ect...) and negative sides too: fluctuation is somewhat high in the "addonmaker club", projects can be taken forever to be completed, or more likely left half-maked, and fact that some addons don't reach even OFP standards. Many addonmakers have real life issues to attend, and most of them are working on their own. Developers (since this is their job) can invest multiple more times into it, they have the experience and can make things faster. Also, it's not a mandatory to buy DLCs. For me for example I'm surely will try Project Reality's stuff, even I have bought BAF. I don't see why I couldn't use official DLC and community addons at the same time. Edit: one example for me are the CH-46 and CH-53 choppers for ArmA/Arma 2. Now I have the one made by Sfc. Itzhak, but it's still have a lot of faults, and updates are coming very slowly - I even got in doubt if those ever be updated. So if no-one makes a well working A2 standard CH-46/53, then if BI would pack it into a DLC, then I'd gladly buy that. Myke: Don't be like that, a lot of people have your F-16, and we're looking forward for future versions too.
  24. Banderas

Why was this not Included in a BIS Config?

Well, it's not a very big surprise (at least not for me) as when I tempered with ArmA 1's models and textures, I've found a lot of unused character textures (some for RACS, a lot of for an FIA-like faction), and you have some existing, but not configured models/textures discovered time to time by the community (McNool's M4A3 ACOG's are an example, but not the only). If you happen to find them, then give it a try and make it available, nobody's going to hold back you.
  25. Nice to hear mate, take your time and be well :)
