    Mfcti new version!

Well all I know is in the 1.1b everon coop the ai squadmembers would just hoof it to towns even if there was a vehicle factory built... so I guess it might not a part of their scripted behavior. ... Perhaps it's because I was playing as a team member and not the commander? Is there a way to make the other ai team leaders work in independent mode without having to assume responsibility for the entire base? (If that's even the issue) That'd be pretty nice. I'm in it for the combat ambience right now, commanding my own little squad in the midst of a battle and such.

I played the coop version on everon. It's pretty fun. I just wonder why the ai doesn't make use of vehicles when capturing towns... it'd sure progress faster.

    Unscripted war

ThruYerStErNuM's missions are great but man... lag city. I think if he doesn't there should be like an unofficial guide to tell people how to trim the fat off this hog. It might be playable for those with average machines. Granted I haven't tweaked anything yet. The music. Accelerated time, the other non essential things like blood and foliage don't do much for me. do the scripts automatically change drawdistance? I keep mine at default and default is where I want it. ;EVEN THOUGH these scripts may appear like stupid excess processor hogs, I believe they are all ; necessary for best gameplay No, heh ... framerate... is necessary for best gameplay.

    Unscripted war

Yes! This is what I'm talking about! I was waiting for something like this. Karillion touched a bit on this concept with the ability to play against ai with his RTS missions, I noticed something about that Skye/nogova virus having dynamically created and directed ai or something. Any plans to make some for the stock ofp maps? This opens up a whole new avenue of possibilities. Sounds like the ofp community is one step closer to making a Jagged alliance style mission where you take territories, raise militia in towns and enemy troops are issued to patrol and reclaim and exterminate resistance. I like the idea of being able to be just one low ranking soldier however. Although I'm a control freak and I like being able to manage many units at once... you can't really do that reliably and actually... play. So it'd be cool for once to play as one guy in a large scale, ever-changing battlefield. @snake man what do you need to get rid of the blood and foliage without crippling the mission? I don't want that stuff either.

    Conquer the base

That's good news Doolittle, I'll be looking forward to the next version. Offering what experience I've had from playing I'd say as far as the money goes: making half the maximum money a person can make in one town (per minute) would still make for a playable game. When it was just the four of us playing, it got to a point where we were maintaining a steady balance of about 20k or so for the rest of the game until I got my base blown to heck while I was fighting off pesky tanks. That's another thing I forgot to mention. The repair vehicle features was a great feature that everyone took a lot of interest in. Especially the tank traps, the personnel tent and the mobile hospital. Those tank traps were great for slowing the advance of ai convoys along roads.

Rts 1.0 build and conquer is out

So does version one have any non-addon requiring maps or are those who aren't too into that S.O.L? I'll have to give it a look anyhow. Still non-addon maps were great because they were so portable. You could take them to a lan game and everyone could play without a lot of setup time. ... one more thing... I was playing some action quake SP a few weeks ago and I was looking on the AQMD for some maps and lo and behold. I saw your name on a few maps. Being a long time action quaker I'm surprised I didn't recognize your name and handiwork. That is of course there's someone else who spells your name exactly the same way and made those maps.
  7. Ok. What the bloody hell is going on here? I've been out of the ofp loop for a few months and the size of addons have become ridiculous. Specifically I refer to BAS' MH60 addon. The last addon BAS made before I stepped out for a bit was the MH-47 a good addon with a wide variety of enjoyable features with an overall size that was a decent comprimise when you looked at what it offered. For the longest time I had respect for BAS practicing what seemed like fairly conservative discretion when concerning filesize while developing high quality addons. Now they've turned around and made one single helicopter that is twenty-two-flippin-megabytes in size (compressed no less). So, in keeping parity between the amount of features versus harddrive space and ram/system resources used from the MH-47 and the MH-60 I officially decree that I want this addon not only to do what the MH-47 did, but I want it to go to work for me. Do my banking. Brush my teeth. Cook me dinner and do all my laundry. I also want it to tell me the future as well as let me travel back in time. I was really looking forward to that addon and well, shit. Now it'd be like eating a piece of a chocolate cake and finding out it was full of broken glass... or giant rocks, or something equally disconcerting. ... Someone, honestly. Tell me what justifies an addon that is 22 megabytes in size? Especially one that you'd think would be around the same size if not smaller than another addon they made (*cough*MH-47*cough*).

You're right. I'll probably just yank the cpp and scripts out and do it on my own. Spoiled though? Not in the least. Now get your head out of BAS' collective bum and troll somewhere else.

Then someone else make an addon just like it but smaller. Then I wouldn't have to post this. There are plenty of goddamned uh-60-like choppers out there. I want rappeling and a uh-60 that is under six at the very most. Tell that to the people who bought the game and can't use addons like that at all. I know people who have computers like that and I'll tell you right now it's the bulk of ofp users who have them. You establish yourself as a prominent figure in a community and you're going to attract attention and scrutiny. Secondly... if you don't like my post. Don't read it... so you've got a bit of growing up to do yourself. I mean I posted this lovely bit of text for you guys for free, don't complain now. Â

It sure as hell matters unless you have three gigs of ram and a processor that wasn't bought in the last six months unlike mine(1.8ghz+gf3+256rdram(which is 4x faster than ddgay-ram)=better than decent ofp rig in '01). Ofp isn't all about putting six things on a map and calling it a game. Then again you must understand. I'm very picky about framerates. In response to their latest endeavor. Their tonal pack adds a whole lot of stuff for a whole lot of size. Which is if you look at it. Acceptable.

    A working dog yayayayay

This is a great addon. It's cool in so many ways. It's innovative... it's SMALL! Both good things. Two things I'd like to see for a unit like this. The ability to assist in detection/tracking enemies, perhaps turning in the direction of a threat and barking. It'd be cool to use a dog to track someone through the woods or something while you can't see them... ... The other issue is that the dog runs as fast as a person. I tried to change it, I don't think you can. Anyhow. A dog like that should really be able to run quite a bit faster. That's a minor gripe though really. Cheers to teacup and kevbaz.

    Walker's sks

I'm assuming he hasn't released his new one. However the old one's texture is just... bad. Normally I'm the last person to complain about looks but compared to the stock ofp weapons it's sub par. Which is kind of sad since I really like the addon itself. Has anyone done a reskin of it? All it really needs is a bit sharper detail.

Which addon has been done to death?

I didn't mean to insult any particular addons. More a critique on where ofp addonmaking has gone in the last few months and how I'm sick of it. Yes. High-def planes and guns look brilliant. They're pretty to look at. However how often in combat do you actually get to inspect the decals, rivets or what have you on the fusilage or tail fins to any particular degee? It's a waste of resources to go that high poly, next thing you'll know people will be modeling trigger group switches and the hatched pattern on a pistol grip for god sakes. If I was looking at a digital art rendering I'd say that's some quality work. Quality 3d artwork (Quality. Yes. Still, I'd call Walker batshit insane if he attempted to put something that high-detail in ofp. That thing looks like it has more polys than anything in ofp anyhow.) Does it add a new dimension to the game? No. It doesn't. Scripts and eventhandlers do that. All I can see from a gameplay point of view is that all these planes with nice scripts, polycounts and textures that go into the realm of excess will keep me doing what I normally do with ofp to an acceptable degree. Which is put as many entities into the field of battle as possible without severe performance degradation. Walker's L85a1 (This is a nicely detailed addon. I really don't see why anything better than this is necessary really. It weighs in at about 720kb zipped versus these other multi megabyte addons. Even that seems a bit large for a gun.) Stock ofp addons set the standard. These high-def addons restrict this... and while if I had a "sensibly" detailed alternative I would take it, however I don't want to miss out on scripting innovations because some guy decided to push the limits of his 3ghz machine. No offence to any particular addon makers. Why someone would care about detail that fine while playing actually playing the game just bewilders me. The question was asked what I think has been done to death? There's my answer

    Conquer the base

I caught wind of this one a bit late. I have been out of the OFP loop for a while. As usual your work is great Doolittle. Only thing is, you got rid of hiring workers  I know hiring workers might've seen like something that slowed the game down, but when I played the first release with a few guys last night, we thought it was really fun to gun down a bunch of civvies and scamper off into the woods. However from playing the first version, I don't know if these were fixed but: Civ vehicles. They just disappear way too soon. I remember the first time I played I trundled up to a town in my tractor and I had to run all the way back to base after I liberated it because the damn thing disappeared  Corpses disappeared a bit to quickly. People whom I played with complained about not being able to liberate a town and then rob the corpses after securing the area. Making money was just too easy. We never had any problems making way more money than we could possibly use up. As neat as the idea of making a base and defending it was. The game eventually degenerated into one guy blowing up another guy's base while he was off conquering or doing something else. I think that was due in fact to the usage of all everon. Then again we only had four players. It was pretty easy as well just to get a chopper firing off  rockets ( as limited as they were) and rush tanks over to a base and basically roll over opposition if there was any token defence forces left behind. Maybe we weren't playing it right. I dunno. I'd really love to see a variant in which the player can remain totally independent of structures so that it would focus more on raiding towns making money and taking slaves. Shooting and stealing slaves is good fun... in ofp that is. Playing against ai was another thing I heard a lot while playing last night, mainly because we don't have enough people to get a huge game going... but I don't think they get that the ofp ai doesn't come pre scripted to know how to do that. One thing everyone loved was fighting resistance... the resistance base in the woods provided quite a bit of entertainment as well since we all decided to fight over it. It was pretty intense seeing firefights happen all over the place while watching out for an indiscriminant third party.

Which addon has been done to death?

I think that fliper's were the best m4s. In my personal opinion. Addons that are ridiculously huge in size are being done to fucking death in my opinion. A g36 addon that's 5+ megabytes zipped? Give me a goddamned break. I happen to want to be able to use an addon and be able to run the game the same as I would without them in other words. Not have one addon siphon away memory and processing power. I don't think there's anything more ridiculous than those ultra high-def planes. A supersonic fighter that you might see in fleeting glimpses on the field and it's 15 megabytes. I don't know what's worse. The wasted work or the wasted money of these addonmakers who've obviously resorted to turning their new computers into digital showcases for impratically designed addons. I plan on getting a new pc pretty soon and I sure as fuck won't install any of these ridiculously huge addons on it when re-install ofp. I'll be enjoying further draw distances and twice to three times the amount of animated soldiers and vehicles on the landscape. Not five or six "pretty" objects. On a side note. I think the whole "Mod" idea is a bit silly. The best thing about ofp originally is that the community was just like one big supermarket of enhancements. You could pick and choose what you want and what you didn't. I've seen a lot of addons that are going to be exclusively in this mod or that... I don't really give a shit. I think those sorts are missing the point of what made ofp so different.
  20. Amongst all the common things that come to mind when thinking about all the neat things we'd like to see in ofp. I guess aside from graphics I haven't seen many suggestions to the infrastructure of the game. The core elements that could use improving. As I speak I'm hearing the air cracking sound of my city's police helicopter flying at a distance. It made me think. Ofp2 would be nice if there were more and better modulation of sound given various criteria and variables. I'm not well versed in this field. In fact the only sound effect I'm really farmiliar with that I know a name for is doppler shift... which if you know what that is... ofp possesses it to a certain extent. If you hear a plane fly by it sounds differently as it passes... that's to my understanding what doppler shift is. Now I was wondering if in ofp 2 there could possibly be a sound engine that modified sounds based on various environmental variables. Ever notice how a helicopter sounds different at a distance yet sounds more clear and mechanical up close? That's basically the kinds of things I'm talking about.... I guess the easy way of doing this would be to make various versions of a sound to be played under certain circumstances for each vehicle/weapon, but I really wish they'd somehow integrate into the engine some kind of modulator to make one universal sound, like a bomb exploding with a more muted concussive thudding sound at a distance. And more crisp and harsh sounding the closer you get to it. Anyhow that's my lot.
  21. Has anyone converted filo's v94 sniper rifle for resistance? I've tried to, to the best of my abilities, convert it myself however to no avail.

    .liberate for ia drang

Nice Doolittle. I'll have to give it a shot. Btw: My cousin took his computer to the place he used to work at for a depot service and he hung out while they did it. After the service was completed they put ofp on the company's server and had the tech support department and all the off duty sales personnel playing a large game of Liberate over the network. He said it was really fun.

    Liberate template

Wow. Yesterday I got to try it over the LAN. So much fun. Everyone I've shown it to enjoyed it immensely. One thing though? It doesn't look like it from upon taking an amateur assessment of the scripts, but you didn't write any script that modifies the way the ai behaves did you? Despite the enjoyment of the game we've met with some really odd problems with the ai doing jackass things... like ordering them to -run away- from a tank and they sprint headlong right into it's path instead. I don't know what it is but it seems the ai for ofp got progressively more stupid after 1.85 Or so it seems. Anyhow. It's great fun. You've breathed new life into OFP multiplayer for me and my friends.

    Ai thread

I don't know if this has been posted yet. Weighing in at 62 replies feel free to delete my redundancy should it end up being so. =P ... anyhow. Character interaction, and I don't mean insofar as mundane crap like talking and chitchat and such. To illustrate my point. Have you ever seen a squad you were assualting with nearly torn to pieces... or a tank squad scamper away from their wrecked vehicle? Didn't it frustrate you that you couldn't say or indicate that they should join you or something? Should you have the space to command them that is. I don't necessarily mean by scripted events either. Just out of the blue you see an allied plane shot down... you meet up with the pilot and you can attempt to bring him into the fold so he doesn't run off bumbling into the enemy. So he can actually be useful in a group. Anyhow that's just my idea really. Allowing my character various options of interfacing with AI, not necessarily in a cinematic way, but to more efficiently coordinate and compensate for things on an ever-changing battlefield.
