When I reverse compiled char3.p3d from the resistance O.pbo and did the geo lod fix it didn't work. The guy wouldn't move and the textures were all buggy... I really wish those were released as mlod. I'm no good at making addons from scratch.
  2. Ok. I did a search regarding usage of binarize. I'm actually going to try to use it even though I hardly know what half of the crap in the batch file does. However I keep reading about how it screws up textures with alpha channels. I've seen some solutions here and there, however I still have a question. Is there a way to just binarize a .p3d file without having to have all textures present? Especially if the addon requires textures from OFP? Which would imply taking up excessive amounts of HD space emptying those big pbo files. I just want to optimize the p3d. Is it possible just to binarize the p3d without having anything to do with the textures?
  3. I want to try addon editing, but I don't want to make something from scratch. I noticed during the early days of OFP editing people used BIS models and modified them. Is it ok to do that? Is there anywhere I can find some in Mlod format that I can use to tinker around with so I can get more accustomed to progressively making greater alterations? I know there are demo models but I never figured out how to add a pistol proxy and that would pose a problem.

Regardless of whether it was a site hack or not, think about how stupid mainstream media will look if that picture does turn out to be that of a doll and they used it without analysing the veracity of it. Regardless of who is responsible for it... it will be something of a black eye for mainstream media. I think at least. I immediately saw something different with the picture when I first saw it on web before I even knew about the existence of that doll. You'd think the people responsible for posting that stuff on news sites might be a bit more intuitive than joe average like myself. front page on the Drudge Report website. Is this where any of you first saw the comparison? This is news to me. The less than tasteful (and FP forums worthy) Ogrish.com is posting this headline: February 01, 2005 Diorama Action Man Misleads Media - Militants Fake Hostage Image Media falls for hostage hoax. View News The "hostage" that can be seen in the image below is actually a "Diorama Action Man", see 2nd and 3rd image.

Funny thing is... on the AIM today news thing it actually shows that picture of the guy sitting behind the banner. So it's hitting mainstream media...

Woah! If you look at it... it really does look like that guy... I thought he looked a bit artificial in that picture myself but when I saw that other picture.... there's quite a resemblance. Do you think that insurgents would be that crazy/stupid to set up a doll and point a toy gun at it and say they captured an american fighter? Maybe. I dunno. This is weird.

Yes, it truly is difficult to call it a remarkable success. What the hell does Dan Rather have to do with it? I mean really? He arrogantly and wrongly denied his sources were incorrect when he did that exposee on GWB's military record... so that basically made him the great satan to every nascar shirt wearing american, but it still has nothing to do with the current situation in Iraq. Trust someone like you to use Iraqis voting as a means to take a stab at someone like Dan Rather. It's bloody hilarious. Yeah. Well people thought the invasion was a remarkable success. I can't see things being all sunshine and lollipops from here on out. They're not going to just roll over and stop fighting. Don't hold your breath. Nice as it was that many all got out and voted. I mean... all it takes is a few votes to elect someone conceivably. I think the opposition to these elections know this. You'll see violence stepped up as the new administration has started to take root or after. Since then, they'll have a definite target.

Personally. I see a problem with even just threatening the families of terrorist operatives. The first being that it's the wrong thing to do. That's the first step in a downward slope towards committing terrorist acts in the name of "freedom". Secondly. I really don't think it would work. I think you could probably kill the family of a known terrorist and nobody would even offer information (or perhaps some of them don't even know? What then?). These people are bound by a doctrine of beliefs that goes beyond threat of violence or bribes. By threatening them you would simply lower public opinion even more amongst the moderate Iraqis and muslims around the world if it was ever discovered. The El Salvador option is not feasible in my opinion. Yes. Currently it seems a fair amount of opposition particularly in the terror groups are Sunni. However if you specifically start targeting Sunnis that will have a ripple effect worldwide. The terrorists are usually deeply religious and I don't think their zealousness can be daunted. They'll either use that as bad PR, or in the case of terror groups steel their resolve to fight harder and perform more depraved acts. I still think these hardline terrorist cells like Ansar Al Sunnah have become essentially a death worshipping sect. They're beyond simply scaring into submission.

    A New AH-64 Pack

Excellent. That's all one could really hope for. Except for the fact that as soon as the helo touches on the ground and bounces... wouldn't that set off the ai? Is it a significant height that would prohibit crew from bailing out without falling too far and getting hit?

    A New AH-64 Pack

One thing. It doesn't show the landing of the heli after it hits the ground. One problem I noticed in earlier versions of ECP was the heli bouncing pretty high off the ground and then landing again. Furthermore, and this is just a matter of personal interest. It would be nice if there was the ability to disable ai after the rotor failure enables so it's not just a fancy death spiral. Actually being able to abandon the vehicle and make a run for it would be nice. As it stands I'd see just a coaxial or mounted AA/machinegun pretty much tearing it to pieces before it even touches the ground.

That's kind of a no-brainer. That isn't the solution either. Furthermore. Some of these solutions sound a bit half cocked, or downright superstitious. Any proof that these units definitely require anything else besides what's packed with the zip file? There's Jam 2 that I know it requires. That's it.

Do you conveniently forget what you previously type or do you think you have some kind of licence to be a hypocrite? Just because someone has a family member who's a criminal doesn't mean the family member is guilty of anything or should be sent to jail. Likewise with an insurgent or terrorist. Should the FBI have killed Timothy McVeigh's family as a preemptive maneuver to prevent any further forms of domestic terrorism? The U.S forces especially towards the beginning of the occupation were so afraid of taking casualties that many innocent people were killed (checkpoints). They've not blatantly attempted to kill civilians but it's been readily apparent that they have no compunctions bombing or shooting areas known to be populated with civilians to kill insurgents, only to officially exonorate themselves of any responsibility afterwards. It's still happening. I can't say that I can honestly blame a lot of the U.S soldiers in Iraq for being very paranoid. As would I too, however. This just goes to indicate to me that their plans for occupation were not contingent upon an full-on asymmetrical conflict, which to me also implies a lack of foresight or planning. Furthermore talk of nukes is nonsensical. You can be sure the first nuke that's tossed anywhere will have a global impact. Anyhow. This is what I'm talking about a while back. It's very easy to take the atrocious acts of one group and attribute it to the whole, but this reinforces my belief that there are both terrorist groups and legitimate resistance fighters both working toward their own separate agenda in the country.

OFP freezed at first? At what point for you and for what duration? I'd like to know out of curiousity why this addon causes that for me and what might be causing it.

We discussed that earlier. The robots that is. Good god why get rid of a joystick and add a controller? Jesus fuck. "Let's make aiming more difficult than it should be". It'll improve gross motor control for movement but fine tuned aiming will suffer, unless yeah. They hire console geeks to drive these things. Even then a control pad cannot be compared to a keyboard/mouse or even joystick setup. Heh. Â

Thankful or motivated, and I can see why. I mean they know the U.S just wants to set up a sweet deal for oil/pro-U.S government and then bugger off. I'm sure some of them out there might see it as an opportunity for free and democratic society, however you know many of them are just sick of U.S forces accidentally killing them if they don't follow instructions/demands (or do nothing at all in particular) and insurgents trying to kill them if they do. It's a shitty situation and I can see the people reverting to psychological coping mechanisms that they used when Saddam was in power. They're used to surviving in oppressive conditions and it's what the people of Iraq know best. The country's security situation is essentially turning it into the same shit but in a different pile than the pre-invasion years. People are still dying, only now it's collateral damage or terror attacks.

    The Iraq thread 4

In my opinion that's even worse. Death by accident/negligence is worse than death by someone who's actually trying to kill you. It's like that football player who quit to join the military and was killed in a friendly fire incident. What a pointless death. Still, this incident just ratifies my belief now that helicopters are just whirling deathmachines, capable of killing it's occupants as much if not moreso than killing enemies. Yeah. People who murder and perform acts to terrorize or coerce civilians or governments are terrorists. So you're basically saying the U.S should drop any facade whatsoever of being judicious in it's use of force and just kill them all? Perhaps this doesn't work out logically in your brain, but performing terrorist acts makes you a terrorist. Are you so bigoted that you could justify one nation engaging in such acts but not another? If you could understand the irony of your statement I think you'd be embarrassed.

Unfortunately. When I run OFP on newer hardware I'm not thinking: "Wow now OFP can look like raven shield". Actually, my thoughts could be translated to a voice in my head that screams: "GIGANTIC Â BATTLES! Hundreds of entities onscreen! Only now with less lag because my PC is better.". Any addon that gives me some variety to my missions that also facilitates that desire to make OFP bigger and better, is a useful addon to me. In my opinion any addon that requires more than sensible restraint is an addon that I won't find conforms to my ideal OFP experience. So who knows. If I can ever get the damn addon to work, I want to try it. As it stands it locks up both my PCs before OFP even runs. But yes. I agree they're a great idea. I like how they look. But... if they don't fit the criteria needed for my missions, it's just... fancy artwork. That kind of lag is justified, it's associated with gameplay. There is nothing in my mind that justifies lag induced simply by an addon with too many polys/high res textures not doing anything special. That's what I'm getting at. What then when you DO play a mission with a lot of things going on at once? Even more lag. All lag is not created equal. If you lose a few frames because there's a lot happening on screen at once, that's just the nature of games. It's when you have that frame loss on top of frame loss which results in really annoying choppy gameplay that you -know- could be avoided if certain things about the detail of the addon were changed. Like the addon as I might. It's just for me, in the end performance wins out, every time. Personally I think it's absurd that there are people out there who may think that by increasing the graphical detail OFP can somehow compete on the same level as newer software. The only way I see that ever happening is if the source code was released and people could program things that... actually made a real difference to how the game is played. to me it just seems like the addon community is obsessed with keeping ofp gameplay from advancing at the cost of making it look nicer, which just to me seems horribly shallow to me. It's not about having no lag. It's all about getting the absolute best performance out of the game whilst keeping a sensible mindset towards aesthetics. Function over form... that's how I see it. The changes in the end user community however seem to indicate an espousal of other values. Which is a pity. Furthermore, I disagree, and calm down. Individuals who have made mods for other games in the past -have- been picked up by professional companies because of their work done in the end user community. You cannot deny that. Furthermore you also cannot deny that many modders of all types of game would aspire to achieve something like that. Which is my point. Unfortunately their mods can seem to become less a functional game in my opinion and more a bid to create something for their portfolio. Should I be unconditionally grateful they're even making something even if it's not useful to me? No. If It's not useful to me I have nothing to be particularly happy about. You can be insulted all you like. I haven't been insulting, If questioning the functionality of an addon is an insult perhaps you need to step back and re-evaluate why you're involved in OFP addon editing. It seems like a lot of excessive and completely unmerited pride has manifested itself in this community. At any rate. I've expressed my mindset which is sensible, in a sensible manner.

Live to play with lag when it's not necessary? Â ... sacrilege. I really don't understand that mindset. At all. The logic completely escapes me. I'd take modest detail and a good framerate versus slowdown any day. Very few addonmakers these days take that into consideration. I'd say, BAS did to an extent with their brdm/scud pack. Which was awesome. Philcommando generally creates good addons with a sensible balance of detail and performance. Vilas has to an extent with some of his addons. I can't really think of many other people who release things that are reasonably detailed these days. Partly I blame individuals who are trying to use the OFP addon community as a stepladder to get into game development (to look more professional). Partly I blame eyecandy addicts/artists who in my opinion completely miss the point of OFP, either that or they have no appreciation for framerate whatsoever. All of these have essentially reduced many addons to me as passing curiousities because I can't really use them for anything. Not without resenting the fact that valuabe frames per second are being robbed by insignificant details. In an intense firefight involving a lot of units. I don't have time to pay attention to minute details. That's just me however. Furthermore, I'm not "bagging" anything. I like the idea of the addon. It looks nice, but I'm being practical and honest in my opinion on it at this point. If the addonmaker has a problem with what I have to say, I'm certain he can tell me so. To be honest I don't think he'd care or be so thin-skinned as to get upset over it.
