Is Queens Gambit going to have better animations
Barry the baldy replied to Dudester's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
The ARMA animations are among the best I've seen in game, the only problem lies in the transitions which, as stated, are an easy fix in a future patch. Just hang in there. As for aiming straight up and seeing your arm, not really a problem since you shouldn't really be engaging helicopters with your rifle anyway and I've never had a problem with it in engaging enemy on a roof top. Again you shouldn't be directly under a rooftop the enemy is on in the first place . It's definately not a gamebreaker, either are the transitions in MP because everybody is dealing with the same disadvantages. Try not to use the actions that cause the broken transitions. -You should only sprint cover to cover (meaning the transition wont bother you since you're in cover when you finish your sprint.) -Definately shouldnt be sprinting then stopping to fire (Thats what run is for.) -Don't engage choppers with your rifle. Use those 3 basic little tips and you will barely, if at all, notice the problems mentioned in the previous pages. -
Uninteresting to say the most. I'll still buy it for some new campaigns but I'm still cautious about the whole thing. It seems a bit rediculous for something sponsered by BIS but I guess we'll see.

A satchel charge does the same thing 1 charge and the obstacle is no more. You want jumping, 1 charge, stand on said charge, detonate.... There's your jumping. On a serious note, I'm with a few others here in saying that jumping added to ARMA is a bad idea. Simple fix is to have "Negotiate Obstacle" or "Vault fence" as an action menu item. As it stands there is absolutely no need to jump in ARMA. Good work on seeing what you percieved as a problem and going to work on a potential fix though. Alot of people around here could learn from that example.

Quality rig - disastrous performance in ArmA
Barry the baldy replied to icebreakr's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Ehm.. EA officially dated Crysis for Nov. 16, 2007. My mistake, I actually meant to say 2008. THe official release you stated is correct but the devs have said many times that they are looking at Q1 2008. ANyway, we'll take it back on topic. -
lol alot tested out there mate... Good luck and hang in there. We'll get you there As a last resort, ff your card is under warranty still I'd contact the manufacturer or the place you bought it and ask for a replacement. Just tell them you cant get the heat levels down (small lie) and if the place you bought it is any good they should A) Replace it and send yours away. B) Send yours away for repair anyway. We aren't 100% sure its the card but again all the problems point to overheating. I've experienced faulty cooling on cards before thats exactly what happens when there's too much heat in your GPU.

500w is fine for the setup he is running. Its only a GTS, they arent as power hungry as the GTX series. I'm on the same PSU and I have a hell of alot of fans plugged in so its doubtful the PSU is the problem. Do you have a copoy of XP lying around just so you can test that out and see if its a Vista issue?

PentiumD are known for their horrid performance. To get up to ARMA standards you're going to need to pick up a new processor and a new video card. You COULD run ARMA (not at very good settings) if you just upgraded to a Core 2 Duo... at least the E6600 if oyu want bang for your buck but to hit the sweet spot you're gonna want to up the ante on your video card too.

Crysis is slotted for a 2009 release deadline which they are looking good to meet, I wouldn't go as far as saying it'll be another 2 generations of video cards before DX10 games become plentiful, thats a major exageration. Once we see games like Crysis, Bioshock and Timeshift released that when MS will knuckle down and get to work on Vistas flaws. As I've said before and as Twisted also said the majority of people who have been around for major OS releases all know that you give it about a year before you upgrade, you NEVER head out and buy an OS at its release, its the nature of the beast. ATM the 8800 series of GPUs will remain current for another year or 2 which is plenty of time to see a good release of DX10 games (many of which are in the making Dutch) and also plenty of time for Vista to iron out the kinks. But make no mistake you WILL need Vista to run a pure DX10 game with all DX10 features enabled. All programs like the one mentioned on the previous page will do is allow XP to see DX10 features and replace them with watered down versions that DX9 can handle. If you're smart you'll wait AT BARE MINIMUM until a few DX10 games are released until you upgrade to Vista. Doing it now, even if like alot of us you have a DX10 GPU, is just shooting yourself in the foot and asking for trouble with the games you already play. -
True, but at least with 3 sticks he still gets 1 GB of uninterrupted data being streamed from the RAM. Its commonly known all over the hardware industry that its not a good thing to max out your RAM slots. I personally would never run more than 2GB of RAM at any one time but I'm assuming that with 4GBs laying aorund he won't just discard 2GB and have it collect dust until we get MBs with 4 Bus lines that we can all afford to have installed.

Bloody spot on mate. Vista will allow you to play all games IN TIME once the OS is updated enough but as for right now (as far as gaming is concerned) its only good for the newest batch of DX10 games, which aren't even out yet. Like I said you can get it to run the same as XP for gaming but you will need to tinker with it a bit (there are alot of guides out there if you look) and doing that is not for everybody. If its not for you best to wait until MS updates Vista to do what XP does with gaming "out of the box". EDIT: I've looked at your link and read it through twice. What you're saying is akin to saying "You can Ice skate on concrete if you do the laces up a different way" Sure that might be true, you can strap up and grind away all day but will it be any good? Does that suddenly make the concrete turn to ice? From the ground up Vista is totally different to XP in the way it works under the hood but hey, its your call, if you want to try and get a fully featured DX10 game to work under the XP framework go for it. We'll all be enjoying our glide across the ice enjoying the scenery of a frozen lake surrounded by forest while you spark your way across the pavement in downtown shitsville. -
I would remove 1 stick of RAM since 4GB isn't going to do anything 3GB won't. Also having all 4 RAM slots full can actually be detrimental to performance. Ideally you want a 1GB stick on each Bus line. So you have your 4 RAM slots. | | | | This is how you'll get best performance: | = No Ram in slot + = Ram in slot + | + | That way you have 1GB transferring on each Bus line simultaneously and is the most efficient way to setup your RAM. Any more will actually take away from your performance in gaming. If you want 3GB which in my experience is the most you want to have installed then have it: + + +| To take it a little further the way it works is you have your 4 RAM slots: | Â Â | Â Â Â | Â Â | They transfer down only 2 BUS lines so they need to be divided. RAM SLOTS- Â | Â | Â Â Â Â Â | Â | BUS LINES- Â Â \ Â / Â Â Â Â Â \ Â / Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â | Â Â Â Â Â Â Â | So having them all filled up will cause a single bus line to try and transfer from 2 sticks of RAM instead of just the one. Hence the decrease in performance if you have 4 sticks of RAM cramming information down only 2 bus lines. Much better to have 2 Sticks smoothly streaming info down 2 bus lines.

Another resaon is that the symptoms you're describing are a perfect match to overheating problems.
-
There's you problem mate. 83-84 is WAY too hot, ideally it should not pass 65 deg C under load which is how my card runs. I have an idle temp of 48-51 and a load temp of around 56. Get a fan under the GPU's intake fan and see how you go. RivaTuner is pretty accurate with its GPU temps, so is nTune. Don't worry about system temps, it probably has a conflict with your MB temp moniter, trust only your MB temp moniter when it comes to CPU temps. but if both are displaying roughly the same temp, chances are thats the temp its running at. Putting a regular run of the mill case fan inder the GPU intake will do the job just fine. Takes 2 seconds to line it up somewhere so it blows on the intake, then put your hand at the rear outlet (under the monitor plugs) and you should feel an increase in air coming through)
-
If you have it right on the GPU fan then maybe, not likely but maybe. You want it about 3 inches away (the bottom of the case to the PCI-E slot is pretty much perfect, just so a decent breeze is blown into the GPU intake. There arent a whole lot of fans strong enough (I would wager there are none) that will affect the fan on the GPU if it was blowing on it. The way it works with the GPU fan is that the fan is designed to pull air in and push it out the outlet thats underneath the plugs you plug the moniter into, the GPU fan doesn't blow air out from where its located so a fane pushing cool air in is ideal since it both allows cool air into the GPU heat case and assists in moving it out he outlet that points outside your case.
-
Using DDR2 RAM, well that rules out another possibility. As for heat, having the side panel off can actually increase temperatures since the airflow is interrupted. What I do to cool my 8800 is sit a fan on the bottom of the case so its blowing directly up into the GPU fan. That way there is always cool air blowing into the intake. This has lowered my cards temperatures a good 20 degrees. Don't assume with temperature, it can get very hot inside that plastic heat case on the card and you wont feel it on the outside at all. Safest thing to do is download a temperature moniter somewhere (google will help you out there, I use one that came with my MB) and get a proper reading. If it is in fact running too hot (which the symptoms seem to point toward) then you can finally get this fixed up, and save yourself from frying a video card. If not then we'll just move on to something else. I know you have the big fan blowing on your card but unless cool air is getting INSIDE the plastic heat case then it really wont do much. You need a fan blowing ONTO the intake fan to get it cooled. A simple case fan sitting under your gpu will do the trick nicely. EDIT: Your CPU is spot on in temp, try Nview to check your card temperature. Alot of 8800 series have a problem of the GPU fans not adjusting speed and sitting at around 50%, Nview will let you speed them up to 100% and moniter the temperature. Rivatuner will also allow you to do this.
-
I just re read your specs. Why arent you using DDR2 RAM? Most of the newer MBs only support DDR2. Might be an issue with your RAM as well. Another possibility could be heat. That would explain why sometimes it works for hours (low room temp) and sometimes it only works for 20 minutes (higher ambient temp). Artifacting and major slowdown during gaming are 2 very common signs of system overheating. Go download a temperature moniter and then come back and post your CPU and GPU temperatures at idle and under load (during or immediately after gaming).

Jeez.... Listen, I'm not a fan of having to upgrade to Vista for DX10, I would MUCH rather stick with XP but that whole deal only allows you to play DX10 games under XP. It doesn't allow all the DX10 exclusive effects as they were meant to be played. They aren't even really DX10 games. Theyre DX9 Games with DX10 features tacked on. You won't be able to play a Pure DX10 game and see it the way the developers made it. IF YOU WANT TO PLAY DX10 GAMES WITH ALL THE DX10 FEATURES YOU WILL NEED TO UPGRADE TO VISTA, END OF STORY. Vista and XP are 2 totally different OS's with different frameworks and architecture. You can't play a DX10 game the same way on XP as you can on Vista. Bite the bullet like everyone else and acknowledge that we will ALL have to upgrade to Vista (as much as most of us don't want to) to experience DX10 gaming. -
You have an almost identical setup to me except for the E6600 (mines an E6750) and Vista, I experience none of these problems. If I had to point the finger I'd point it at Vista. Maybe use an install of XP or dual boot with Vista and XP until Vista catches up and irons out the creases. At this point its almost a 100% certainty that its Vista causing these problems for you mate.

Barry the baldy replied to icebreakr's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Pure and simple, as has been said, the 8600 isn't even a mid range card. Now its a low end card. In all honesty you can't expect to run a high end game like armed assault on a $200 video card. Move to Vista 32bit or head back to XP pro and update to an 8800 (at least the GTS 320MB) and your FPS will skyrocket. I'm on a: Core 2 Duo E6750 2GB RAM XP Pro 8800GTS 320MB And I run everything on high at 1440x900 and never drop below 30fps. At the moment your 8600 is bottlenecking your system right out the door. As for the whole VISTA argument, we're all going to need to upgrade to Vista at some point or another if we want anything to do with DX10 gaming but timing is everything. Its a great OS, we just need to wait until all the bugs have been worked out and it runs as well as XP does. In its current state you can still get everything running as well as XP when it comes to gaming but you're gonna have to fiddle around under the hood a little bit. -
Need help with upgrde? (CPU or GPU)
Barry the baldy replied to pvt.pile's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Well I'm running: Core 2 Duo E6750 2GB RAM 8800GTS 320MB and I run the game with everything on high at 1440x900 and never dip below 30fps with a screen full of characters in battle so you should be ok, but I might just be one of the lucky ones who don't end up with crappy FPS with a crzy system. -
The original poster, while a bit over the top, has a valid point with gamers accepting cruddy first versions of retail games as "The Norm" BUT.... It's part of the industry now, with cable in almost every gamers home the 'patch culture' is easier for developers to deal with. Better get used to it mate, its here to stay. Just do what I do and don't buy the game until you've spent some time on the games forums, read the issues people are having and the devs have released 2 or 3 patches.
