    Queen's Gambit goes gold!!!

Translation from sneak preview: Armed Assault: Queen's Gambit The 1st addon for the tactical shooter Armed Assault contains 2 campaigns. »Rahmadi Conflict« is the name of the small campaign, consisting of 3 missions only. You´re taking the role of a US soldier as usual. Unusual is the difficulty level (high!. More thrilling, longer and even more unconventional: The campaign »Royal Flush«. In this one you´re taking the role of the mercenary Kurt Lambowski who is at first doing his job for the new queen of Sahrani accompanied by his team. Pretty soon they change sides and from now on fight for the brother of the queen who was assumed dead. Royal Flush consists of 7 missions only, in wich you have to take control of a radio-station, free prisoners from a camp, etc. What´s interesting about this campaign is the fact that there are no big warmachines at your disposal. From time to time you have to visit a weapondealer to get the right equipment for the mission at hand. Especially outstanding about Royal Flush are numerous cutscenes that are dubbed at a very high level and not only introduce the characters to you but make you feel close to the characters -- despite or just because of the rude tone they have. Gamestar Sneak Preview I´ve done this translation on-the-fly, so don´t hold my liable for any shortcommings Just wanted to share it. I´m getting it. 15 Euro are a fair share I guess and keeping in mind that the guys responsible for the campaign already got my attention with the very well done "Alpha Prime" already made me interested when I first heard about it.

    ARMA Support And Patching Plans

Well, nvg´s are very vulnerable to light emissions and do shut down on their own if they are exposed to strong lights. If they wouldn´t they would be damaged beyond repair. Dashboards in helos or aircrafts usually can be toned down, so the lightning from the panels doesn´t affect the NV goggles. Those things are really sensitive to sudden light "volume" changes. By the nature of their mechanism they are not very fast in adapting to the surrounding light. There is a delay comparable to the one in Arma, while I still think that the variation in BIS nvgoggles is a tad too high. I agree it could need some finetuning as the effect of emitted light on the nv´s is too high in Arma.

Technically speaking it is a cheat in any competative gamemode as it gives you a benefit over players who don´t use it. Easy as that. While machinegunners with tall grass won´t see enough to make them efficient, with this mod you will be laying down and see enough. This is why competative servers use a standard set of settings and anyone not running his client with the settings will not be able to play or disconnected right at the start when modified data are detected. It has been like that since OFP, and it will always be that way for simple fairness reasons. We had this debate before (disabled grass in MP competative gaming) and you know what stance the Arma community has on that issue. Just because you don´t agree, doesn´t make it right. Still, I like the mod. Very good work !

    Force player to walk

This won´t limit the players speed Matt. I can´t really think of a clean solution to this Eagly-Eye. You either have a loop running, checking the players speed or running animation and force it back to slow speed by temporarely disabling userinput when the player is exceeding the desired speed, or the character is performing the run-animation, but this will either look ugly, or look chopped beyond believe. What you could do is to display a hint like "You are running to fast, your men are falling behind." and end the mission if the user fails to meet the groups speed for some time or distance between the group and the player gets too high, or you could turn the part of the mission into a cutscene where the user can´t influence the speed while watching the squad move.

    Lawsuit against cheating scum?

I´m not getting it. What´s the problem with the legal approach they took oChaos.DNJ ? If it works : Hip , Hip ! If it doesn´t, nothings lost. I guess you are not a judge or a lawyer, so your also fishing in the dark. Walker has some experience in this field, so I guess he knows slightly more of what he´s talking about than you. I´m getting really tired of this debate here, furthermore there is actually no need to debate it as the jurisdiction will be the ones to decide if it´s worth it or not. Leave it up to them to decide and keep that "I know it better than you, although I don´t really know it better, but I can always claim to" - talk out of here. Again, if they (police, jurisdiction) decide to consider actions it´s a win situation. If they don´t, we have learned that it didn´t work. As noone is spending money on this (apart from the server owners who suffer a loss because the server is not available for the reasons mentioned) there is no risk for anyone but those who conduct acts that create the situation on the servers. Why don´t you just rest this useless and tiring debate and relax, sit back and wait for the things to come ? You don´t know, Walker doesn´t know, the man in the moon doesn´t know, but it´s worth the try.

    Some graphic bugs...

Is this fan made for dwarf airconditions ? I mean 10mm...how is that supposed to be effective for your intended useage ? I have a 120mm fan to cool my case and it´s one of those cases where size does matter

    Operation Flashpoint 2 officially announced

I´m not quite sure and I think I haven´t read anything solid on streaming terrain in OFP2, but the article at one point talks of "levels" which gave me quite a freeze but would explain the high detail they are obviously aiming for. Could it be that the 220km´s will be chopped into pieces ? I know it makes little sense for a concept like that, but still, I have my doubts...

    Lawsuit against cheating scum?

@oChaos.DNJ : I´ve read your posts over there at the kindergarden-club page and just because they claim that it´s not illegal doesn´t mean that´s actually true. Comparing the level of conversations over there with the BIS forum here should give you a clue already. Just because you toot for a PB solution (which is ridiculous btw, as PB aswell gets hacked) doesn´t mean that other ways of dealing with such individuals of a very special breed can´t be done. People who have financial losses because of their behaviour have every right in the world to report them to Mr. Officer. I´m also very sceptical about the success of such an approach, but there´s little to loose. I´ve mostly always played on password protected servers to keep myself away from egomaniacs with a psychological deficit. I still hope though that BIS has something in the pockets for them as they call employees of BIS facists, scum and whatever and all hang loose under the umbrella of "freedom of speech" which is indeed a bit naive.

Thx so far. After checking some reviews, tests and prices, I guess I will go for a dual-kit of GEIL DDR-400 pc3200 value series DIMM´s. They seem to be very fast while a tad cheaper than comparable OCZ modules. I can get them for 108 Euro plus 6 Euro for mail here.

Thx for the links...well actually the 3rd one is the same as the first. They modelled a handgrenade with 5000 polys ?!? Do i need to start saving money for a Cray ? Seriously, if they don´t waste it, it could be something interesting.

And what do you do then ? I guess people who desperately want to see something ingame should give it a try on their own and then show their wip here to find more contributors. As it seems a lot of threads here only have so called mod-leaders who look for people to do the work for them. I guess that´s just not the way it works. My 2 cent.

PC Discussion Thread - All PC related in here.

I have a pretty basic question for hardware geeks One of my old PC 2700 DDR RAM modules fried so I want to replace the whole set of modules. My motherboard supports DDR 400 PC 3200 Ram, so I will buy two 1 GB modules. The highest capacity supported by the motherboard is 3 GB. Questions: What are the best performance/price modules DDR 400 PC 3200 ? Does dual-mode raise performance ? How do they perform with overclocking ? There are (for me) cryptic values with the RAM modules: CL2 3-2-5 What does this mean ? Does it make sense to buy 3 GB ? (Computer is mostly used for games, but I also run music - production programs and 3D programs like Quest3D, Maya on it. Operating system is WinXP SP2 and I don´t plan to to switch to Vista soon. Gfx card is a Leadtek 7600 GT AGP The motherboard is an Asus A7V600-X with Athlon XP 3000+ Does anyone of you own an OCZ DDR-400 pc3200 1GB DIMM ? How does it perform ?

Wind Turbines For or against & why?

You are aware that a cellphone is by it´s nature meant to send signals and frequently communicates with the mobile cell you are currently registered with ? Your computer doesn´t send signals like that, still it´s permanently emitting measurable elctrosmog. I guess you mix some things up here that are not to be mixed up from a logical point of view. Again, you mix things up that are not to be mixed up. I guess you need to look up the differences between electromagnetical emissions, the power of the signal and pulsed microwave signals. You are talking of a totally different pack of sox here. Cool, now can we have some solid numbers with a link pls ? Developement started early, during the vietnam war. Again, you have to see that there is a difference between civil and military choppers. The payload for military hoppers is much higher than for civil ones, therefore they have to use a different set of rotors. The length of the blade is a factor here. Long blades have a high speed at the tips. Very basically said, the longer the baldes are the more the noise will be the rotor creates. If you compare a Bell UHD-1 with a Bell OH-58D you will hear a significant difference. Airfoils, blade planforms, and tip shapes are chosen which mitigate the effects of HSI (High Speed Impulsive) noise and BVI (Blade Vortex Interaction) noise. For a given design gross weight, increasing the blade chord and changing the number of rotor blades are means of reaching an acoustically desirable rotational tip speed. The blade number change also alters the frequency distribution of the sound generated. Of course this is only partially applyable for wind-turbine-blades as they are not powerded by any machine, but the basic principles apply to them aswell. Apart from that there are already wind turbines for the use in urban scenarios that have a totally different setup and no longer rely on blades. but use some kind of sails. Technical progress and design is bound to the numbers of windmills built. The more are built, the faster the progress is. It´s a matter of money. A plane has a lifetime and the costs for planes and/or turbines are incredibly high, so from a financial point of view the plane has to run for a certain time unchanged to make money. It isn´t comparable to wind-turbines anyway as we are talking of a completely different set of technical aspects here aswell. A good example are more silent Turboprops. The modifications that have to be done to reduce the sound emissions of a Turboprop are not that costly and are done by airlines or charter companies as it raises the level of comfort for the passengers. Wrong again, it´s about big public acceptance aswell, if there is no acceptance the public will turn it´s back on that kind of technology. You are comparing apples with stones, as the costs of wind-turbine blades are in no way comparable to the costs of new jet-engines. This actually has very little to do with what I posted. You missed the point I guess. To make it simple: Humans have changed the face of the earth constantly. Do you think the generation that witnessed the first highways and autobahn´s felt easy about them ? Still, they are here today and noone ever could imagine that a world without highways and autobahn´s could actually work. It´s about time people get used to the 21st century landscape changes. Wouldn´t be that smart, don´t you think ? Quite amusing, but still you have to bear in mind that you actually do not use the generated power for your own house right now. It´s much more efficient to sell the generated electricity to a provider. In about 20 years I will think about using it for the house, but right now it would only make little sense. I earn much more by selling it, than by using it on my own. Did you plan how big that room had to be ? Did you think about the costs of the batteries needed to conserve the energy and did you keep in mind that the cycles of charge and discharge are rather limited ? From a cost/efficency side this will be a no-brainer, unless you only want to run a camping-fridge. It works good, but it has to be maintaned every year wich is aswell a cost-facor. Right now I´m selling all the electricity generated. In about 11 years I will have earned the costs and then It will start to produce money.

    ARMA Support And Patching Plans

The bridge issue is indeed a big showstopper. In a mission I´m working on I have a convoy moving over a bridge in the background and they hardly ever make it over the bridge altogether. I tried almost any possible variation with waypoints, speeds, etc. In this variation of the bridge bug, the vehicles simply drive through the sidewalls of the bridge and dive into the water once AI driver Joe gets confused and tries to to some mumbo-jumbo on the bridge with his vehicle. Another very common and annoying bug is that units have no problems with running through destroyed vehicles. It´s not a viewdistance matter, the VD is set to 2000 in the mission and the units do this about 150 m´s away from the player. They don´t do it randomly, but it´s a permanent habbit for them.

Ask a moderator about the forum and the rules

Sorry, I´m pretty new to all that Wiki stuff and I didn´t know about that. In fact I even didn´t think about clicking on that "discussion" link before. I searched for "rules", "primary contact" and such and didn´t come up with something usefull. that´s why I posted here. I know this has to sound silly for people who regularely work with a Wiki like that, but for me the BIS wiki is the first that I actually do more with than just searching for something. Apart from that, I´m old

Ok no problem, my bad then. Actually I thought about where or whome to ask before posting here, but I simply didn´t come up with something relevant when searching the Biki for a primary contact or such. Will keep that in mind from now on though.

Question: On 25th of June I added an Arma 1.08 face reference plus a tutorial to the Biki page dealing with setFace On 16th of august I added a link to an online face gallery I created to the same page. Both of them were deleted by Planck with the comment "unsuitable link". I just don´t understand the reason why. Both are hotlinked over at OFPEC, while I also do think that they were in the right place on the BIS biki as people who want to use the command will probably aswell search for the faces in question and maybe are happy about a little tutorial on how to implement such. What´s the deal ?!? setFace Biki page Check history to see the changes. Apart from that, the setIdentity page is linking to outdated Arma faces as they have been updated with 1.08, but I certainly do not feel arsed to correct that anymore...

Glasses don´t work for now in Arma as there are none embedded. Maybe a custom addon will come along with some glasses oneday. Yes. Click the pic in my sig to download the face reference with tutorial on how to embedd it in description.ext
  24. After some quick testing I understand what you´re saying. I was not aware that footsoldiers need a roadway lod, but this also explains why they are so eager to jump off roofs first. Well, overall this is bad as it basically renders the idea of units patrolling on rooftops and balconies of buildings without proper buildingPos useless There isn´t a way to override the regular pathfind routines of AI and simply send them into a direction, apart from using setvelocity, right ? Thx for explaining though
