Just stumbled across this "game" from the demo-scene. It´s simulating sumo-wrestlers in a quite funny way. All physics are done in realtime, not prerendered animations. Check out this page for details and download: Sumotori wrestling To activate the hidden mode shoot the right section of the walls in the main menu. I was laughing my ass off watching the characters trying to get on their feet again. Enjoy.

You know how heavy sumo-fighters sometimes are ? The weight and the physics momentum are the obstacle here in this "game".

Yep, Toribash is quite similar, while the technical approach is quite different. I found out about the Sumotori thing while trying to find a way to make Havoc more lifelike as it sometimes just cuts out too fast in Unity engine.

Floating-point mouse steering for vehicles?
Balschoiw replied to Spectator6's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Steering is wrecked since Arma I and apart from being proposed to be fixed or offering a second input model for smoother steering nothing has been done in this section by BIS. I hate it aswell. -
Allow shooting from the hip when running?

Allow shooting from the hip when running?

What´s the song in the video ? -
Current system doesn´t allow dismemberment anyway. Apart from legal consequences for BIS (read ban in a number of countries) it simply would look odd with no ragdoll system. Accurate wounds on the body are hard to do aswell as you need to project a decal as with vehicle damage. Problem is that the body model is not good for such decals as they are either very small to fit the bodyshape or the simply would look way off as the direction of the decal could be standing off the body in a very surreal way. Another hindering reason is the performance drag of such decals as they have to be detected by a raycast or projectory function and have to move along as a child object of the body if the soldier only gets wounded. This eats performance I´m afraid. I´m not unhappy with the current system and imo more gore does not add to gameplay, quite the contrary. The technical side of wound textures on bodies is quite complex as you have to detect where the bullet hits the model, get the angles, position and surfacetype and need to project the texture or object that way. Once placed the wound needs to move along with the body which is not that easy as it has to be parented to the body and it´s position, lighting and shape (texture stretch) needs to be calculated on the fly by the engine wich adds CPU load. In bigger battles with lots of wounds applied this could be a big performance eater. I´m currently working on a little shooter with another engine and we decided to apply decals only on static geometry objects just for the performance reasons and the coding needed to parent decals to objects that are changing their position or shape.

What is the value of a decent Simulation Engine??
Balschoiw replied to S!fkaIaC's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Prices for 3D engines have dropped alot over the last years. Current engines with Newton physics implemented (wich would imo be a real choice for BIS aswell as the result of the implemented inhouse physics engine is not satisfying) are around 2000 Euro up to 10.000 euros or more. I´ve switched to Unity 2.5 lately which is significantly cheaper while offering a real drag/drop solution to build simulations/games. There´s quite some obstacles with other engines to get models into the engines, texturing is sometimes hard, baking lightmaps on the fly is unsupported in alot of engines and getting imported animations to run on and control is sometimes a real pain in the ass. Wit Unity it´s easy as imported fbx-files are fully mapped, textured and animations can be split on the fly in Unity. The biggest benefit of Arma 2´s engine is it´s weak point aswell: It´s a grown engine. Some of the features implemented over years base on somewhat outdated code and the flexibility of the engine itself regarding physics, import, animation support and the needed control of animations is not up-to-date. Native C or Javascript support is also missing. Overall I´d say BIS would be better of sometimes to license existing engine components that are tested, working and more flexible than the solutions developed by BIS. -
I´ll keep it simple Grapi/HK69 Spread all over the world, universal 40mm slot, retractable buttstock and big bang for the buck. My alltime favourite during my active time. Edit: Added name :pet7:

You wanted it. You got it. Now quit your whining.
Balschoiw replied to BeerHunter's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
A proper betatest at least that would have highlighted lots of the errors that we, the customers, once again have to point out for BIS. -
Found it some time ago and reported/documented it:

As with Arma 1 I have texture lag and LOD problems all over the place with Arma 2. I have already installed the older Nvidia-driver but it doesn´t help. Whenever I zoom in, be it with a scope or right mouse only I get the lag. Even when looking around the LOD swaps very slowly. Sometimes the game comes to a complete stop for some time. Even when running the grass and tree detail just randomly loads which makes running a funny LSD experience. I don´t get it why this is still happening with Arma 2 ? I have a rather fast computer, so I don´t get this at all. My Specs: Intel Quad Q9550 Nvidia GTX 280 1GB 4 GB DDR 800 Dual channel Ram SATA HD with own partition for Arma 2 The issue gets worse after playing a while which indicates to me that either the GFX-Ram or the shared RAM is filling up and then the things are temporarely loaded to harddrive. What can I do...I mean I can´t buy a new comp ? It is already pretty fast. To be honest I´m not happy about the comeback of Arma deficits :(

Nvidia SLI profile patch for arma2
Balschoiw replied to BigSlongsDaddy's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Question: Do users with single gfx cards also benefit from the SLI patch or is this only relevant for users who have more than 1 gfx card installed ? -
I guess right now Arma 2 in some cases even runs better on 2 cores than 4 cores. I have an Intel 9550 @ 3.4 Ghz and it doesn´t run that good. I still think Arma 2 needs tweaking and optimization to make it run better on a system with 4 GB RAM, a 280 GTX with 1 Gig Ram and Windows Vista Ultimate. Right now it doesn´t run that excellent.

The hitpoint system has to die. Smurf out. :pet7:

I guess the nature of the system does not support actions like that. Actually only BIS themselves can enforce legal actions. The BKA as other governmental institutions only act if criminal actions are conducted and actual proofable is reported to police. A mass mail like the one intended above is no jurisdictial matter and therefore simply will have no effect at all.

Oh...I got a Diszi for my sandy shoe-polish afterall, so the german tradition to follow rules literally actually struck me. I didn´t give a f**** though.

[BUG] ArmA2 AI Wayfinding pls fix it
Balschoiw replied to Zapman2010's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Big areas are no matter for pathfinding or hindering Ai to maneuver in an appropriate way, it´s the pathfinding and roadmap placement with Arma2 that causes trouble. Same goes for objects near to roads and other vehicles in the same group trying to reorganize on roads while interfering into other group-members way´s. I had it just yesterday with a small convoi where two vehicles spent 5 minues of dancing around each other while trying to get back on path again. All were careless-mode, etc. Unfit for driving I´d say. -
After some of these experiences we resorted to simply ignoring their orders as they would have exposed us to a high risk while conflicting with ROE´s and endangering a whole lot of vehicles that were driving behind us. There was a word going around that we accept any Diszi up to 1000US$ as our own security and the security of our detail was more important than the ego-tripping of military weekend-warriors. Problem within critical situations is that you mostly don´t have the time to conduct extensive communications with superiors that are out of reach. That´s when you take it on your helmet and override orders. Example: We were on convoi duty as FuFü slightly ahead of a 2km convoi towards Mogadishu when armed persons showed up on the road in a little village where the road was blocked with a vehicle wreck. The reservist OLt who was riding ontop of the Fuchs got frenzy and ordered us to open fire on persons pointing weapons towards us which was a clear violation of ROE´s and would have led to an uncontrollable situation for us and the convoi behind us. The Olt was screaming into intercom and was totally freaking out because I didn´t open fire with the MG3. I simply refused to obey because it´s pretty natural that locals run around with weapons and roadblocks consiting of car-wrecks are also something you see pretty often and are no problem to push aside/run over. So after internal communication with the vehicle-crew we closed the hatches, brought up the shielding and simply went straight through as we always did. No problem at all. When we had a technical halt soon after we explained the situation to HQ at Belet and the OLt was just a simple passenger after that. It was his first trip on a convoi to Mogadishu from where he shipped out soon after. There were other incidents comparable to this one, some of them even funny but in general I haven´t made that good experiences with reservists who join combat troops for a few weeks only and hop in like superheros to add chilli to their life while lacking the basics of the mission background.
-
I guess you got me wrong. RAID Team Oberfranken is specifically formed for international competitions and has handpicked members while most of the usual reservist organizations have a broad spectrum of ex-military members. Those guys specifically train for the competitions and are therefore a highlight among other reservist troops who simply don´t have the consistent level of personel. As the outlines of military competitions are fixed before the happening they can specifically train for the scenarios, while regular military duty for regular units concentrates on the education for combat scenarios that they are sent to. The gap between reservists and active duty military is very obvious when reservists are reactivated and sent to actual scenarios. I´ve been to missions where voluntary reservists joined the team and more than once endangered the whole team. I´m not saying that all of them are like that but the german system at last is very shabby when it comes to such as the ranking of reservists is achieved by participating in maneuvers over years. You can happen to have an high-ranked reservist on your tank without any proper combat experience, little to no pre-mission preparation who thinks that he´s the boss just because of the virtual rank he has. My experiences with most of them were rather mixed tbh. Some of them didn´t even hesitate to insist on proper boot-polishing in the desert. At some point you just ignore them as good as possible and do your own thing.
-
RAID Team Oberfranken is a german reservist unit, that is especially training for military competitions. RAID Team Oberfranken ECOLE MILITAIRE INTERARMES is a french reservist unit, sacre bleu :pet7: Those competitions are show-offs as the reservist units only train for that events while the regular units have to do some other stuff to do during the day. Don´t overrate things like that.

Does anyone have a setup ready for lefties ? My trackball is located left of the keyboard, so the Arma 2 preset settings makes it hard to play.
-
The main gripe for me about those death-animation-system is that it sometimes looks so surreal. There is a delay when you shoot someone and the death animation kicks in with a noticeable time-delay. This looks really odd sometimes. Another point is that there are no transitions for death animations. So you shoot someone who´s crouching and he goes up like a skyrocket just to tumble sideways and drop down. I guess the system is really not up-to-date and the time-delay is something that really springs to your eyes after playing Arma 2 for a while.
