They are shooting with the spike pulled out for AP effect. Shooting with spike retracted is forbidden in germany as safety ranges are hard to calculate then I have some pictures of shooting PzFst 3 with retracted spike somewhere in my photobox. If I ever get up to my photobox I can scan them if needed. The blast is really stunning In combat ? No. From a shooters perspective there is hardly a big difference as the volume of the weapon makes you quite unsensitive to the extend of the sound atm you shoot. On most real life combat situations you shoot those weapons within ranges of up to 700 meters at best. The difference in sound between expanding gases with a non-rocket propelled projectile and a rocket-propelled grenade are really neglectable. Of course I can only tell you this from my own experience, maybe soeone else can tell a different story, but when you fire such device, no matter if it´s rpg or non-rpg the sound is simply loud, big and you´ll be happy that the projectile is gone. -

PzFst3 can´t even be shot with live ammo set on contact detonation in germany Oh... Thank god we don´t only operate in germany. I still keep the tradition of having a rather fenzy electronic perimeter around my house, even if I´ve moved lately I agree that the AT-4 and the AT-4 CS have a rather different sound as they are not self-propelled but tbh the expanding air does produce a "swoooosh" sound comparable to rocket propelled grenades so I would call this a minor neglectance at best. It would on the other hand be really cool if BIS took into account that firing a non CS variant would seriously fry the shooter when firing from confined spaces -
Arma II Officially Better Looking Than Crysis?
Balschoiw replied to walker's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Don´t wanna bring down expectations but who tells us that the all shiny gfx will run decently on a moderate computer and is not just there for the beloved cp thread as it was with OFP and Arma ? People seem to jump fast to conclusions if they get presented some high-fidelity screenshots these days. Neither OFP nor Arma was able to fulfill this promise during a running game with decent FPS. Why are you all so convinced that Arma 2 will be able to ? I´m pretty sure that Arma 2 will not have flexible vegetation like in Crysis, where you move through some underwoods and the branches of vegetation bend back on player influence. Tbh, I don´t think that Arma 2 will be that interactive in microphysics. It would be a drastical change in the physics compartement and gfx compartement and I just don´t think that BIS is able to do such "jumps" in evolution. Same goes for multiple-parts vehicles. There may be some predefined blast zones for vehicles/buildings but as they are building from one version to another it´s very unlikely that they redisigned the whole thing from the scratch. I personally do not think so. I am able to run Crysis on ultrahigh settings with my computer and the currently served gfx from Arma 2 do not come close. Sorry, that´s the way it is. This whole thread is rather stupid imo as you can´t compare a highly polished "corridor" shooter to an universal combat-sim with a very different roaming behaviour. Sorry Walker but you fail to get your perspective right. Right now we only have HQ stills and a few ingame sequences that are not up with the quality of the stills. I´d still be interested in the qualities of Arma 2 "on the move", with a solid FPS counter and hardware specs. Until that, I´m sceptical at best as I know where BIS is coming from gfx-wise. Stills do not tell you anything from an ingame pov, and tbh Crysis plays on a very different level than Arma 2 when it comes to flexibility and physics simulation. Pysics are indeed a big part of the visual impression today, noone can deny that. If someone says that it´s still ok that he shoots a jeep and it simply swaps it´s textures at one point it´s ok, but it has nothing to do with visual effects and possibilities offered by Crysis. It´s stupid to compare both and it´s very stupid to put Arma 2 above Crysis without knowing Arma 2´s inner values and ingame performance. Stills are great but they do not tell you anything about ingame performance. -

Oh really ? Have you heard them irl yourself, or is this just some wild guessing based on vol-cut, condenser mics from cheap vid-cams on downsized youtube videos ? Sorry mate, unless you heard it yourself with your own private ears it´s better to shut up. And yes, I´ve heard them all with my own ears, including PzFst3 set to impact ignition on live targets. The sound comes pretty close to what is served here, the only thing you´ll miss is the ground vibration on close impacts and more bass plus the imidiate ring of dust that appears after impact from the soil, depending on humidity of the soil. Troll on. -

It would be nice to have an FPS counter in the screens and Hardware specs of the computer used to get a relation to the computers that are used by the mass of potential customers. Dissapointment will be high if the quality can´t be achieved with a decent framerate. Maybe I´m sceptical because both, OFP and Arma offered visual qualities that were not running fluent on most computers available. -
Given the nature of the game it would be nice if the campaign would end into an open play mode whereas AI and the player fight on in an evolving conflict that is cleverly managed and not repetative. Laying the biggest part of Arma 2 on MP is an error imo as the gaming sector serioulsy misses a standalone single-player experience that doesnßt end after 10 hours. This would be a big backset for me. Arma´s campaign was dissapointing, let´s hope Arma 2 will offer something more OFP - related when it comes to replayability and duration.

Actually it´s hard work as is composing music for a movie. In fact I think it´s even harder as a game like Arma is not really a plot-following thing as a movie is where you can time your music specifically to certain events or moods that are changing constantly. For example a lot of games use a 3-5 component music segment system where the music automatically changes depending on ingame actions or situations. The user only notices that the music gets more pumping, louder or more aggresive while the tune of the theme stays basically the same. This is very complex to compose as there also have to be bridges to get back to the original theme once the situation calms down without giving the player the impression that he´s listening to different tracks. Such was of course not implemented in OFP or Arma but it´s possible to do it with scripting. Still...it´s hard to compose music for a game and imo the original music by Ondrej Matejka made OFP pretty unique. I didn´t like the revamped versions that came with Arma much, my own opinion. Apart from the vocal tracks performed by Seventh these are classics that you can listen to without getting bored. Music-design for games or ads is a pretty complex thing. Picking some random songs from myspace may be tempting but it´s not the way it works if you want to have music in your game that doesn´t bore you to death when you listen to it for the 25th time, this is why those compositions are pretty expensive if you want to have them fit your game perfectly. I hope there is more budget for Arma 2 than with Arma 1 as the snippets where not really that original and complex as the OFP soundtrack was. Remixes are nice, but taking it to a new level may be the way to go even if that means to invest more money into that segment. I´ve done a theme for a Riddick presentation you can listen to at my MySpace account linked in my sig. The song is called Riddickula. It actually took a really long time to get it sorted to fit it on the game-theme.

The effect is so minimal that it´s hardly reasonable to implement such a ressource hungry effect. The video you linked to was recorded in nightshot-mode, the result is that it looks much brighter than it really is. -
Up to now noone can say if OFP2 or Arma 2 is going to be "the" big hit as we all did not have the chance to play the complete product yet. Arma 1 was a desaster when it was released and Arma 2 still could be one. All we have up to now are scripted scenes and the same oddities that we had with OFP and Arma. BIS has willingly released Arma at a state that was riddiculous at best and OFP also took at least 1.5 years to get somewhat completed, so I guess fingerpointing into this or that direction is simply stupid. Let´s see what it will be. Either OFP 2 or Arma 2 will be the thing, or maybe both, I do not give anyone credits for something that is not released yet. I´ve done so before Arma was released and the result was really terrible. I´m not married to BIS nor Codemasters, even if I´ve been to BI personally and talked to Marek. It´s one thing to have fun on a personal level, but it´s a very different thing to see that all the expectations and announcements for a sequel to OFP didn´t make it to reality. I´m just sitting here waiting for the things to come. Not more, not less. On a sidenote...my postcount may be somewhat high, still I can be hardly called a fanboy of the typical kind.

I 100 percent agree. Tis is turning into a witchhunt that is unworthy for the BIS forums. I guess there are ways of solving this in a private way. And Paul...regarding Pulverizer: I guess you´re seing things there. Sorry.

Seriously, Vista is some kind of kindergarden compared to what Windows 7 is about to do with us, the users who are supposed to pay for it. Draconian DRM revealed in Windows 7

That´s really no problem as the displayed text could still be in english and if BIS makes it a selectable option I see no difficulty at all. I liked that with FDF mod. The more you played it the more you understood without reading the subs. In Crysis they had the feature on higher difficulty levels aswell and to be honest if we take Arma 2 as a longterm motivating game (as it hopefully will be) this is definately something I´d like to have in as it really adds alot to atmosphere and keeps you from shooting friendlies in the woods by accident Definately...that´s why I keep bringing it up until I die From my own experience I can tell you that NATO units only do communications in english among other NATO units but within the national unit combat is organized within the native language. Soldiers don´t attend to extensive language lessons. The player can still read the order in english and he also get´s a visual landmark ingame in english as it always has been, the different audioset is just some realism candy I´d definately want to have if there is a chance to get it. It bites me if I observe a russian base and the patrol leaders shout out there commands in english. That´s just plain damn stupid. -

Nice ! Cockpit sound of Hind is spot-on. A few things though: - crew sound of T-72 is audible outside. This is nonsense, as it was in OFP and Arma. Please fix that finally. - Crew speaks english again. Please introduce a new voiceset for at least one side. I know, I´ve already had a conversation about this with Ondreij when Arma was released, but still....this is part of the atmosphere for a game. It adds so much to the atmosphere if you sneak up to a enemy position and don´t understand a word of what they are saying. - It looks like the animations at the checkpoint are playmove or switchmove animations, please add some random, unscripted behaviour for troops like that. Random conversations won´t do harm aswell. - spinup time for hind still is arcadish - no backblast of tanks while firing Apart from that I love it. -
Shouldn´t this one be closed ? Arma 2 PvP terrorthread There were numerous threads of that kind over the years and still they end up with bashing, fingerpointing and flamebaiting. Can´t you just end it by locking it ? It´s a useless debate anyway with Arma 2 release that close.

What I really hate about Windows 7 is the totally overdone DRM crap. You can´t even record a radio-stream from the internet anymore and archive it as the DRM kicks in at once. No choice for me. I´m having Vista 64 Ultimate and Xp 64 intalled right now and I don´t see a reason why to switch to a restricting OS like Windows 7 anytime soon.

In the end it´s BIS who decide and we´ve learned from Arma that they have their own agenda when it comes to suggestions. I guess Arma 2 is already in a state that allows no fundamental changes anymore. I only hope that we do not see OFP and Arma bugs again. I already had a Deja Vue with Arma when it was released and I guess BIS knows that another wasted release like Arma´s was will give them a headshot from reviewing magazines and users. People and hardcore fans are already sceptical, very sceptical. From what we´ve seen up to now the stills are great, the concept seems to be ok but the overall quality of the videos presented up to now is somewhere in the middle between good and bad. I don´t know what to make of it up to now. The characters look dated imo and I really hope that they get a good setup of weapons and vehicles going. With Arma the vehicle-park was more a circus-selection than anything serious. I´m wary if guerillas come into play as this also could mean that we´ll see a variety of old weapons again and not a representative line of modern weapons. We´ll see, I´d say. I have my hopes but I don´t put them as high as with Arma. If you don´t set your expectations too high you can´t be dissapointed but only be pleasantly surprised. Hugh ! -

Infact the impact looks quite real imo. Depending on ground surface the raised dust could be more around the target from the shockwave. But this depends alot on moisture and material of the ground. What I really want to see once is the instant circle of dust that arises. It doesn´t evolve but it makes boom and the the dust is up at once. Hard to explain. I could post some of my personal pictures to illustrate impact of AT weapons with contact detonator if needed but I guess BIS also have good ressources for that stuff. -
To be honest I don´t give much weight on them. It´s better to leave them out than to implement them half-cooked as they were/are with OFP and Arma. My opinion though...

Afaik the 920 does not support native 1024 resolution but simulates it. Don´t ask me how this is supposed to work technically but from the specs it doesn´t support native 1024. Once you´ve got it dig this thread up and post some extensive feedback pls.

Sure there can be flicker They built pictures alternating left/right. If the frequency supported by gfx card is too low it will cause flickering and cause headache. It has nothing to do with the type of display but with the frequency it get´s "changed" to build the 3D impression. Also check if your gfx card is supported with stereo drivers by Nvidia. ATI cards do not support such devices at all as there are no stereo drivers.
