Is there a healthy ArmA Multiplayer Community?
Animal-22 replied to msvbvm61's topic in ARMA - MULTIPLAYER
Another ArmAInteractive player checking in and I have to say that ArmAI is so good that it has totally ruined regular pub play for me. ArmAI uses ArmA like it was meant to be used. Full scale, combined arms conflicts with organized units and strategies. You're not going to waltz in and be commanding a Ranger unit your first battleday, however. Just like in real life, you've got to put some time in and practice. And it makes the community a much better place. -
The bullet drop over distance is linear and not parabolic (Basically, the bullet doesn't ever slow down from friction). Therefore it is not realistic in the strictest definition, but for the purposes of the game, it's realistic enough to add the challenge but not be overly demanding. As far as your statement about long range shooting being guess work... we'll you're just wrong. Unless you mean 800+ meters. And then it is only due to the MOA accuracy of the rifles. First shot headshots can be reliably reproduced inside 800m.
-
How can you use the M24 at that range? At >1000m you need to holdover the scope so much the target isn't even in the view anymore! So basically zooming in the weapon won't change the view direction and you can set a custom static view direction for a weapon. Whoopdeedo, now the M4SPR won't change zero's when you zoom it. That's about it. It doesn't even make proper M203 sights possible, unless the camera/barrel angle can change and therefore doesn't allow custom sights. I'm really hoping the view definition points can be moved in game though. That would be everything we hoped for. Targets can be hit with the M24 at those ranges when firing from a position that is elevated above the target.
-
I would imagine there is so much guesswork because you don't know the finer details of how to use a ranging scope (like the mil-dot or SVD optic) to its full capability. I know several ArmA snipers who can get One Shot Kills reliably to 800m on a horizontal plane. Shots well beyond that range are prefectly possible, especially when the shooter is elevated above the target. All the in-game distance shooters I know DID have to work out their shooting range cards with experience because the model isn't exactly real world. It's a reasonable facsimile, but simplified somewhat. Once you know how to determine range reliably with a mil-dot scope and have a solid range card, OSKs are just a matter of a little practice. The M24 and SVD are very accurate, the SPR a fair bit less but still solid inside 600m. The point is, it is all very predictable and repeatable. Research how to use ranging scopes, learn a little about bullet physics and you'll be ahead of most players.

Yes, it definitely gets worse the longer you play. If you back off your video settings, you can eventually get to a point where it stops doing it altogether.
-
I think we proved more then once that this is NOT an 8800 nor a Vista only problem. Its ArmA itself so BI gotta do something! Â Someone in this Thread said that he dont want a workaround, he want a solution and i can second that... Yeah, but it's much worse with 8800 series cards and especially with Vista, Einstein.

If you are getting this error a lot, you need to back off on your video settings some. I only get this error when running settings that are high and it always comes in conjunction with the LOD bug. With the new NVIDIA drivers and the current full-production version, I can run at all normal video settings and be completely stable. If I go to all high, I get the LOD bug slightly and then start getting the memory surface error with CTD. The error is some sort of memory handling issue with the 8800 series cards. Basically, if you are getting it, back off your video settings until it stops. I know these cards SHOULD be able to handle it, but due to drivers being fairly new and the game being fairly new, neither has been optimized well yet. I have found the the new NVIDIA drivers and the US Demo used in tandem allow me to run at max video settings and I have yet to have stability problems. Also, the maxmem parameter only makes things worse for me.
-
Cameron, just to let you know what I have found... With the current production version (non-beta patch), I can put everything on high (not very high) and the issue is MUCH better. I can go quite 20+ min. without having LOD issues. Then, when I get them they start very small and get a little worse over the next 20-30 min. Then, it finally gets out of hand. Occasionally, I get the memory surface CTD error in the latter stages of LOD issues. Also, in multiplayer, things get a little choppy occasionally. In the US Demo, I can run everything maxed out and it runs just fine. No choppiness and no LOD issues at the 30 minute mark. I haven't been able to test it further yet. I have to admit, I haven't pushed the US Demo as hard as I have the full production version, however, I tend to believe at this point that the US Demo in combination with the new NVIDIA drivers makes a platform that can be considered stable at acceptable quality settings. At the very least, it's a promising step in the right direction. NOTES; This was all done with a 4GB pagefile. Also, the maxmem parameter makes thing MUCH worse for me.

Consider checking out ArmA Interactive. Good pilots are always in need. http://www.armainteractive.com

Specs: Intel DC 2 Ghz 2 GB RAM 8800GTS 340MB Windows Vista I have serious LOD issues as many people with Vista and 8800 series cards have detailed on here. I lowered all my video settings to "low" except for resolution (1280x1024x32) and the game is completely stable and runs well with no LOD issues. I have seen some discussion about the "-maxmem=512" startup parameter, but I am not clear on how this helps. More importanly, I have heard other people using different values for the maxmem parameter (like 1024). My question is, how does this impact the video performance in ArmA? How does increasing or decreasing the parameter value effect LOD issues? Thanks in advance, Animal22

We'll do. I'll test the US Demo tonight with the new drivers and get back to ya. Also, I suppose I need to start using the maxmem parameter in my full version.
-
Are you testing in the Beta 1.05 or the US Demo? I think we might get close to getting this solved with the combination of the US Demo and the new nVidia drivers.
-
Please let me know how this turns out. I have the same issues as you.

Any update/ Possible fix for this madness?
Animal-22 replied to keefehb's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I've got a 8800GTS and I have the same issues. I have scaled everything back to low settings (except resolution) and the game runs fine for me now. I downloaded the new US demo and was able to raise all those setttings to Normal and was able to run fine. I've heard some people talk about using the "-maxmem=512" command line parameter and how that helps, but I have yet to track down a decent thread on how to best optimize the maxmem command. -
I think that MP will never substitute for good AI, as human players simply can't take up all roles in a game with the same professionalism and discipline that the AI potentialy can. After getting fustrated by SP I have been playing MP for the past few weaks, searching for the "ArmA is all about MP" expierience that I have heard so many times about. In those many hours I had a hard time finding some good gameplay. First the vast majority of MP games are still coops, so AI obviously still plays a large role here. In those massvie coops that are very popular right now, the real challange is to organise logistics. There is lot of waiting involved, lots of driving around and almost zero teamwork. The combat itselfe is mostly about hunting AIs that are lieing on streets or walk around a bit. The only true challange they provide are their shooting skills. Additionaly there is the massive fustration caused by thousands of idiot *human* players that try to spoil the fun for everyone else ( teamkilling, destroying vehicles ). I also seeked some good player vs. player action, but I couldn't realy find it. All I found are CTF and BF2 style fragfests with almost zero teamwork involved. Of course this can be fun, but other games - dedicated to that style of play - do a lot better job at it. Thats not why I brought ArmA. I have not found a place where there is good and tactical team vs. team action. Someone will say "join a squad" now. That can't be the solution. Playing in a squad takes up massive amount of time, you have to make trainings to learn ( or teach ) the tactics, make apointments days ahead so everyone has time etc. You can't simply load up the game and have fun with a team of professionals against a enemy of professionals. Plus I am already involved in a Lock On squad and simply have no time to enter a dozen of squads/clands/etc for all games that have no decent AI. So as a conclusion and to come to a point I think that MP can be a aspect of a game, but will never replace the options singleplayer and a good AI can provide. Especialy for a game like ArmA that calls itselfe a realistic combat game/simulator, AI provides the professialism that a all-human MP session will never have ( well, if the AI would be decent that is ). You need to check out ArmA Interactive. I am much like you and since joining, I have had a blast. It is the best MP experience I've had in any combat game, so far. OFP included. http://www.armainteractive.com

I have a 8800GTS w/ 340MB and running on Vista. I experienced the same issues with texture loading you are, no doubt, referring to. While I cannot run the game on full max settings, I can now run it at mostly "normal" settings. I used to have to run it at all low settings in 1.05. The demo is definitely an improvement over 1.05 in terms of graphical performance. The mouse does seem to float more. I haven't tried tweaking the control settings yet, so maybe just tweaking the mouse sensitivity will fix it. There are a few annoying bugs with missions but nothing serious. The core gameplay is still very solid. The AI doesn't seem to be super-accurate anymore. I have yet to CTD with the memory surface error yet, however, since running at all low settings in 1.05, I don't get it anymore either. But again, now I can run all normal settings and not get it. I think this is a combination issue of less-than-optimal drives from nVidia and ArmA itself. It seems like ArmA has stepped up it's end quite a bit, let's hope the next set of drivers from nVidia does the same.

The recoil on a .50 cal rifle seems exaggerated? Good grief. In RL, I don't even think you can fire the thing from any position but prone without flipping yourself over backwards. I would think that you SHOULD take damage if you fire this gun from any position but prone under any circumstances. Also, the waver factor should be HUGE if you are firing from any position but prone.

Exactly HOW do you fix "MOA accuracy" with the windage dial? What exactly IS "MOA accuracy?"
-
OMG, another one who knows nothing about sniping... Where did you get your information from, discovery channel? Go take a class. Hmmm.... not my quote... don't know where this came from. However, the ability to surmise windspeed and direction in-game does make for interesting discussion. How WOULD they execute if it existed? I never said that. Actually... yes you did. That's why I quoted you directly. Here it is again in case you forgot already... Dude, didn't you read the post where I wrote that I figured it out?! I just brought it up so a better solution would be coded instead of the the mil dot system, which really isn't as fun! Which one, I wrote below. I figured you would back out of this. Anyway, the mil-dot system is more challening and thereby more rewarding when used successfully and thereby more fun for those who know how to use it. Wrong, remember what I said about the M24? I pulled off many shots at 650m while its zerod on 300m! 350M difference... that is what you mend isn't it? Presuming it is actually MOA accurate yes (the 500m zerod version)... Again, you show your lack of knowledge of real-world ballistics. The bullet drop over the 350m travelled between 300m and 650m is less than the bullet drop over the 350m travelled between 500m and 850m. So the 350m difference in both cases is NOT the same. Also, the shot group variance increases with distance, so results become less reliable the further distance the projectile travels. I have my OWN GAME?!?! SUHWEET! Â Â I'll bet you play it all the time!

It definitely is a bug, but relax. Wait a little while and let's give them a chance to address it. BIS isn't like the big-budget studios. They've been pretty good about releasing patches so far, give it a little time.

however, like time show b4, all Windows version (start from 3.11, 95, 98, 2000, XP nad now vista) have same weaknes, in first year or so, they highly unstable and dont do/support  what they realy should. there for is solution: dont rush to  get new Windows version, wait till microsoft fix all bugs and drowbacks. The only instabilities that Vista has shown, en-masse, so far is in high-end gaming. The launch of Vista is nothing compared to the launch on Win98 or Win3.1. dont realy know, and dont want try it, at least for cople years. i dont like OS's wich take too much resorses. that why i was on 98 till last day, and on 2000, that why i stick with XP atm. no point jump to vista. look like drivers for high -end video cards not finely tuned with vista. however: "The only instabilities that Vista has shown, en-masse, so far is in high-end gaming."  could be big problem, couse mostly peeps by new systems for gaming , wich have vista on board. i would say its nasty surprise. P.S. not all buesnes need new OS, for example company for wich i work use OS desined in 1983 by IBM and upgraded in 1989, and all works, we used not bcouse we cant get new OS, but by one simple reason, we not need new OS. I totally agree that if you have no need to go to Vista, then don't do it. Why would you? XP is perfectly servicable. I even agree that a business doesn't have to upgrade. But as an IT person, I know that I will need to get familiar with it at some point. The sooner, the better. AND it was free.

Severe texture issue happens with incorrect GFX settings and older video cards. Â We the users have already sussed most people just need to run Low opr very low texture and ram up filtering to avoid the problem. next patch will also help. Vista and ARMA, Â should ARMA also work under Linnux and Mac OS, Â cause they have about the same users base right now. Â BIH have said they are looking at better vista compat' Â But its not just ARMA that wont work in vista. Â Some of the issues are hardware drivers as much as the games software. So vista users install XP, Â play stalker and ARMA etc now, you have an XP cd right you DO KNOW how to install an OS? or sit and whine like a mac users, Â "wah it won't work cry, cry, Â even though it DID NOT SAY VISTA ON THE BOX." I mean my PS3 game wont work on my Xbox360 WTF I demand a refund!!!!!!! For all the people saying "it wont work on vista" there are people here saying it does work. Â So either have fun troubleshooting or install XP! I'm sorry the smart computer users either have XP and vista on a machine or knew this would happen as this ALWAYS happens when MS update windows and won't migrate to vista till its ready. And if you bought a new PC with Vista preinstalled then I have one word for you. Â "Muppet!" Wow, you can't help being a jerk, can you? You make a whole lot of assumptions about me, none of which are right, and think it makes you some sort of internet demi-god because YOU know everything. Get over yourself. First off, comparing the difference between Vista and XP to the difference between XP and Linux or MacOS is just plain laughable. Vista is the next-gen Windows OS. Secondly, I have severe texture issues at ALL settings, so thanks Inspector Gadget, but you missed on this one. Also, I was unaware that the 8800 GTS was already considered an "older video card." I also posted that I hope a solution is on the horizon... like A FRIGGIN' PATCH!!! I know the next patch will probably help. Where have I said anything about a refund or, for that matter, where have I said ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THIS GAME AT ALL? Eh, Einstein? As far as having XP AND Vista installed, I am working on it, but I think even you could comprehend the convenience of having everything work under one OS. It's funny you call me a muppet since that is where I take my nickname from, however you attempt at an insult was grossly incompetent. I installed the OS on my PC by choice. Like it or not, it's the next-gen Windows OS and those of us in the business have to get used to it. Who is really the puppet? The one who isn't counter-culture or the one who is counter-culture because that's what cool people do?

This is an issue with the textures loading properly and a bug. It has been reported on the ArmA Bug Tracker and it seems as though the developers are aware of the issue. Some have it worse than others. I can't even play the game more than 10 minutes. At any rate, I am really hoping they get it fixed in the next patch. Don't give up, BIS is operating on a shoe-string budget and I have to say they have been very responsive to getting bugs fixed so far.
