I am very disapointed in bis's lack of sniping....

Crawl through the forrest with 1 km/h and pop him from behind at 1 meters range. That is the joy of joys! And when the word spreads, those snipers begin to get really paranoid! <span id='postcolor'> see, there in lies a problem in OFP. In Land Warrior, we had claymores! </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (denoir @ April 04 2002,00:44)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">I always do my sniping at least with a BMP. Just find some nice secluded wooden area, load up them HEAT's and fire away. It is surprising how you can get away with it for quite some time before sombody wises up and LAWs you out of business.<span id='postcolor'> I personally dont consider this sniping in the slightest. This is just long range warfare.

Games portraying the "real horrors of war"

I swear, i'm about two steps away from not even posting here anymore. This thread is out of hand! Anyway, i'll agree with all the veterans here that "The Real Horrors of War" are something we'd never want in our games, i just think we could use a more responsive, more realistic dammage system.

its amazing. Everytime i dont expect anyone to reply to one of these, i come check it out the next day, and its got like 50 replys already. Anyway, i know mother nature didnt have our kind in mind when she was busy sculpting the landscape, i was just really frustrated that BIS didnt either. I was a sniper in Delta Force Land Warrior, back when i could actually play it (for some reason, it just stopped working in multi-player. i think its my internet location or something). And there, you deffinitely fear the snipers on the oposing team. also all the dickheads who never let up with their precious rocket launchers. But i usually always found myself on anti-sniper detail. And, quite frankly, i was good at what i did. That game keeps stats of every player that played the official servers, and i never once saw another sniper with as high of accuracy as i had (about 55% overall, up in the 60s and 70s in certain gametypes). So it just kinda got to me. The frustration built up, i vented, and as i said, i'm done being fanatical. And incidentally, i dont think a bell tower would be as bad a spot as some make them out to be, especially when the enemy's distracted by the legion of friendly troops who are engaging them too (No, i'm not talking about saving private ryan, i know the movies arent real life). A good vantage point is a good vantage point, pure and simple. And if i may remind everyone, its just a game, and i'd like to have some "Classic Movie Sniper" fun by wasting everyone from the safety of my tower. And i also know for a fact that each and every one of my rantings here (probably everyone elses too) doesnt mean a thing, because no matter what i want, or what i say, the games not going to change for one virtual marksman alone. I know that, and i'm fine with it. i'll just have to go and try my best to make do.

How many of u like the "plane"

a little trick with the 'camcreate' command I set up a radio alpha trigger that could be hit repeatedly with a command in the activation field that spawned a laser guided bomb 30 meters off the ground in my units position. that way, while flying at, say, 80 meters up, i just hit the trigger, and a laser guided bomb is spawned right under me as if i dropped it myself. the trigger is repeatable, so i get as many bombs as i want.

i think its really cool depending on what you do with it. Just a little while ago, i made it so you could drop laser guided bombs with it with unlimited ammo

oh, totally. I think they should model ballistics better, like what was done in land warrior, so shots would be more accurate
  9. ahhh, is ee what you meant now. In that case, i dont think thats possible. What i game you was from the un official command reference. They've pretty much got everything possible, so if they say it isnt possible, then it might now be. However, try and experiment. Replace the values given with your own and see if it works

well, with all due respect, with an M rating, i dont think there are that many 10 year olds playing OFP. It wouldnt even just be the violence, you actually have to pay attention and know what to do. This games meant for a fairly mature audience all around. I could really get behind a more realistic dammage\death system for infantry guys. The game deffinitely needs to be more responsive when it comes to getting hit, taking injuries, and yes, more animations would be good too. But more than that, i think the area sensitive dammage needs heavy tweaking. Its a little discouraging when i shoot a guy four times before he dies with whats meant to be a sniper rifle. Or when i put one right in his chest, and it makes it look like he got shot right in the face. Now that i think about it, this is my biggest gripe about realism. Id just like to see area sensitive dammage get a lot better.
  11. i think this should take care of everything: groupName SetGroupID ["CallSign","Color"] groupName is the name of the group. CallSign is the call sign to use for this group. Valid values are : "Alpha", "Bravo", "Charlie", "Delta", "Echo", "Foxtrot", "Golf", "Hotel" Color is the group color. Valid values are : "GroupColor1" = Black "GroupColor2" = Red "GroupColor3" = Green "GroupColor4" = Blue "GroupColor5" = Yellow "GroupColor6" = Orange "GroupColor7" = Pink So, using this info, just put the following command in the 'initialization' field of the group leader, or the person or unit that you want to change the title of: this setgroupid ["callsign","groupcolor"]
  12. I can give you detailed instructions on how i got it to work. First, just open up desert island in the mission editor. Of course, youll have to make a soldier to play as, so put yourself up on a hill, or somewhere where you can see everything. Now make a trigger that is activated by radio alpha, and put this in the 'On Activation' field: bigbang = "LaserGuidedBomb" camCreate [Getpos man1 select 0, getpos man1 select 1, 10] now you need to make an enemy soldier named man1 and put him somewhere where you can see him. When youre ready, radio alpha and watch the bang!

i think youre right. We'd all have to get new computers if OFP were to become any more realistic than it is.

rogue spear deffinitely hit a few nails right on the hnead, so to speak. Also notice the different levels of limping, depending on how you got shot in the leg, and in which leg and so forth.

Detonate it 1m up in the air instead<span id='postcolor'> thats just it, the missile doesnt fall. If you place it 0 meters up, then it starts on the ground and detonates the second its generated. I use a maverick because its the strongest missile in the game, and the blast is sufficient to knock down a wall section. So it acts like a breaching charge.
  16. eh, i got it to work, thats all i care about. Thanks anyway, though

Your talking about how someone impressionable might become used to killing people under those circumstances (A game as realistic as your talking about), and wouldnt feel as much remorse about doing it in real life. heh, quite an interesting, and successful i might add, thread i started here. One interesting thing i feel i should point out and ask the OFP community at this point; I want to point out that we now have close to 60% of voters here that said they really did want ALL the horrors of war in their games, yet everyone whos ever been in combat before has said that its something you really DONT want to have in your games. Something iv just now been thinking about is that, if we really did have a game that real, would it still be a game? Think about the nature of a game. A game entails fun. It entails excitement, joy, entertainment, in some cases physical excercise, and so forth. Does a game entail fear? Desperation? Guilt? Remorse? A strong sense of stress? The deaths of your loved ones, and quite possibly you too? Just something to think about....
  19. one more note. the "10" at the end is the value that tells the weapon how high off the ground it will start in meters. so for artillery, i would guess it would be better to have something like 30 in that spot. this will make it start from 30 meters up, so it will take longer. I also just made another break through. This looks totally cool, and works well for storming a base with walls around it. Put your "man1" right next to the wall you will be going through, and in the code line, use maverick as your weapon, and put it 1 meter off the ground. So when the trigger is activated, it will take out the wall and act like a breaching charge.
  20. No problem I used the line of code that RED gave me earlier, and i put it into a trigger activation field, only i took out the underscore before bigbang. It looks like this: bigbang = "LaserGuidedBomb" camCreate [Getpos man1 select 0, getpos man1 select 1, 10] And then you just have to have a soldier, preferably enemy, named "man1" wherever you ant the explosion. And just FYI, laserguidedbomb does work very well for artillery simulation. I tested it out and it can take out up to 20 abrams in one strike.
  21. nevermind, the error message is gone. so all i need to know is if its possible to do this without a soldier named man1. If not, its ok, it'd just be better for the mission.
  22. LOL!!!! I just had to try this, and i blew up 12 t-80s with a laser guided bomb. Anyway.... Heres the situation thus far. I still get the error message, but it works as long as i use a man named man1. How can i - 1) Ditch the error message? 2) not have to have a man named man1 for it to work?
  23. RED I tried that line of code you gave me in a trigger, and it said Error genaric error in expression
