  1. KilJoy,

we played Evolution last week-end (4 then 5 guys in total) on a LAN server.

It took us quiet some time to finish the mission !

Anyway, it was fun but we have some comments about the mission.

    Here they are:

    Missing features:

    * the ability to save the choosen weapon so that we don't have to reselect weapon at each death

    * give points to all pilote, gunners and commander of vehicule for kills.

    * IA should give points to the squad leader when they're doing kill. It's already the case for medic (BTW this seems to be easy to abuse).

    * mobile respawn point

    * more 5t truck. We need them to move tons of IA (necessary because they can't properly handle bridge)

    Hindrances:

    * too much night (we were playing with the 1h = 1 day option): we'd like to attack the 21st of june when the day is the longest possible.

    * repairing vehicule is far too tedious, especially with trucks having to be refueled. I think giving infinite fuel for the trucks would make if far better. A simple set of truck (fuel, ammo, service) would then be enough to repair vehicules except when they are destroyed by the ennemy.

    Bugs:

    * the M1A1 gunner gets no points if a commander from a different squad is in the tank

    * points for clearing a city or destroying a secondary objective should be awarded to all players

    * Corazol secondary objective destroyed using a vulcan without been noticed by the server (the tower is destroyed but we didn't see the message)

    * unable to destroy the secondary objective of Bagango (IIRC)

Thanks for this great mission !

    1.

    KilJoy,

what do you think of the different items (I removed the fog issue)?

    Thx,

    1.

  2. Hindrances:

    * far too much fog on all the map: we were unable to see anything once we are at altitude of 300/400 m. I tried to setup a viewing distance of 10km in the video options but it didn't change anything.

    ................

If i have seen it right, the mission forces a view distance of 900meters.

Hum... For a bad pilot like me, it's impossible to use the Harrier with such a low viewing distance.

How can I change it (i.e. edit the mission to make it client side and not server side) ?

    Thanks,

    1.

  3. @ May 10 2007,04:01)]
Quote[/b] ]12 ai units with no weapons just floating around the recruitment hut.

Ive seen it to im looking for the cause.

Theres no need to look for a cause. Its part of the map. Or at least i think it is. If you leave an AI near the recruitment center you can order him to recruit a soldier for you when you are really far away. That prevents having to babysit the AI (or occupy room with them on transport) till desired destination.

Thats why ppl leave AI near the recruitment center. You can call them when u want and they will spawn right next to you.

    cheers

You sir, are mistaken. We know what "ai just hanging out" looks like. icon_rolleyes.gif

The error in question is related to AI being left behind by disconnected players, and other related matters. This AI we speak of can't be shot/killed, and often spawns oddly without weapons, etc - always at the recruitment center.

Yes, we had this behaviour too. I forgot to put it in the bug report.

During our 30h mission the server didn't crash but some clients yes. rofl.gif

  5. ViperMaul,

I think the formula is ok for MinBandwidth. Assuming you're ArmA server has a dedicated link, it's a conservative setting to specify 75% of your upload.

As for MaxMsgEnd, it's the big unknown ! It's most probably related to the number of used player slot and may be to the number of user generated AI (ex: AI recruited in Evolution). As this will change, we need to find some kind of formula and apply it assuming max connected player.

Googling "MaxMsgEnd", I've seen value as high as 16384 for LAN server !

Beside the BW usage, I also think the more message you're sending, the more CPU it's costing.

As you said, we really need an official BIS feedback here.

    1.

PS: I'll try to talk with an ArmA server admin tonight and post his settings if I can have them.

  6. BTW, here's the advice from BIS for a 1Mb upload server:

The greatest level of optimization can be achieved by setting the MaxMsgSend

and MinBandwidth parameters. For a server with 1024 kbps we recommend the

    following values:

    MaxMsgSend = 256;

    MinBandwidth = 768000;

    1.

  7. I'll also gladly get the info.

I've tested a dedicated server with default parameters on a LAN yesterday. I was alone playing London Bridge (Karillion's mission) and I had the teleporting IA effect.

I think that two parameters are important:

    MaxMsgSend=<limit>;

Maximum number of messages that can be sent in one simulation cycle.

Increasing this value can decrease lag on high upload bandwidth servers.

    Default: 128

    MinBandwidth=<bottom_limit>;

Bandwidth the server is guaranteed to have (in bps). This value helps server

to estimate bandwidth available. Increasing it to too optimistic values can

increase lag and CPU load, as too many messages will be sent but discarded.

    Default: 131072

The second value states that the server has a 128Kbps upload speed (twice the speed of the analog phone line) so that pretty crappy. I assume this must be changed to a far higher value.

The first one seems directly connected to lag (that is probably causing the teleporting effect). Here I have no clue for choosing a right value.

We can do the trying and guessing way, using monitor to check the BW and CPU used but it's not that satisfcatory..

  8. Hi,

Is it possible to select the language of the combat text (exemple: "AC soldier at 50 meters") ? In MP, we are receiving the messages in the local language of the client detecting the target. I'd like to force it to just one language.

    Thanks,

    1.

  9. Cleaning the MPCache did nothing to improve the situation.

Cleaning the inside of the computer had a large impact !

I'm still testing it with Prime95 but after 30 minutes I'm still with a stable 64/65°C while yesterday I was at 80 after 3 to 6 minutes !!

Of course, my CPU having a max temp of 70°C in the specs, the test failed.

In Arma, I was reaching a whooping 85°C before crashing ArmA but not Vista !!

So my advice: run speedfan to check your temperature while running prime95

I assumed I had not heat problem because the OS was not crashing. I've learned a new thing yesterday. smile_o.gif

  10. Hello,

do we have any idea of a rough estimate of what is necessary (in term of server ressources) per user ?

I understood somewhere that each AI has to be counted as a player, except for badnwidth I guess.

We play ArmA on LAN next week with friends I wanted to know what you where thinking about this hardware:

sun V20Z, bi opteron 2.4 GHZ, 4 GB RAM, 72 GB SCSI HD

We'll be around 6 to 8 players. Will that be enough for Evolution ? Shall we put the server up to 16 GB RAM (yes, we're lucky, we have the opportunity to do it) or is it just a waste of time/ressources ?

    Thanks,

    1.

  11. bravo 6, what was the result of prime95 ?

I ran it with speedfan running to check the different temperatures.

I had the unpleasant surprise to realize that my cpu is overheating. prime95 stop with an error when the cpu reach 80° (my athlon fx 53 is supposed to run with a max temp of 70°C). ArmA is crashing when the cpu is at 85°C !

The different way to lower the temperature are:

    - clean the dust on the fans and heatsinks

    - make sure the air flow is not blocked in your case

    - buy a proper case with multiple fans if you don't have one already

    - replace the thermic stuff between the cpu and the heatsink with a top quality one

you can also try watercooling (personnaly I'm not a fan of this technology) or open you case and put air conditionning in front of it (not really a good solution but can be used to test how your PC is running at a lower temp).

1, going to do my housework in the PC...

  12. Good point walker !

Still I don't understand how the cache becomes corrupted in the first place. My current test are done on a brand new vista and arma installation.

The very first try of arma was done without a glitch (during the mission) but as it was 4:15 AM it didn't last long as I needed some sleep. Quiting arma went bad: black screen, I had to kill the arma process.

May be this corrupted one file...

Again, my instant CTD on joining was on the XP installation, not on vista where I can play for about 2 minutes.

I know that mixing the XP info doesn't help to make my request clear.

I'll try the "clean the cache" solution and report the results here.

I'll also give the right path. In Vista, the "documents and settings" part is organized differently.

    Thx,

    1.

  13. @Lunatic:

Turn post processing to low, turn AA to low, turn everything else to high. => done except texture that I kept to normal

Install the beta patch and the latest nvidia drivers. => done except I'm still in 158.18 and not using the 165.x the 165 thread is not giving me confidence in these latest drivers.

Add the -maxmem=512 command line. => done.

My result we given after having done all that.

  14. Hi,

CPU: AMD FX 53 2.4 GHz

    Mobo: ASUS A8N SLI Premium - nforce4 socket939. Drivers: 15.00 WHQL

    GPU: 8800GTS 256MB. Drivers: 158.18

Soundcard: AC97 onboard. Drivers: 6231 Realtek

    RAM: 4 x DDR400 512 MB - 2 different brands. Running at 333 / 3-3-3-8

ArmA: 505 version running in french - 1.05 or 1.05beta

    DirectX: DirectX 10

    DVD : LG DVD GDR8160B

I played Arma in SP fine for days on my old XP system. Then I played MP but I had some crashes and I tried to fix that. The result is far worse than the original problem.

I tried a brand new XP installation, using nforce 6.86 drivers and 158.19 for the GPU. The result was an instant CTD when trying to connect to a server in 95% of the case. in the other 5% I CTD when finally connecting to the server.

I decided to try Vista so I installed one additionnal Gig of RAM, Vista (again, fresh install), installed the audio and GPU drivers. I still had CTD but after 2 to 4 minutes playing in MP. I tried to add the mobo drivers, the 1.05 beta patch, the maxmem=512 or 256 trick but I still have the same issue.

The only change is that with maxmem=256, the error message "Fault Module Name" is not in StackHash anymore but in arma.exe

    What I have not done:

    - remove the orginal RAM

    - disable all the onboard LAN and install a simple 3COM PCI LAN card

    The RPT report:

Can somebody tell me if a fix exist for that ?

    Thanks,

  16. I fixed it!!

I spent a bit more time on that profile I couldnt delete. Windows wouldnt let me delete it. It said the file wasnt there?

Anywau, I dowloaded PergeIE which forcefully deleted the file. I couldnt delete it any other way.

THen I re-installed ArmA and now its running fine

    PEace* yay.gif

    MeNeZ,

what file did you delete ?

I have the exact same CTD problem with the exact same error message.

I'm using a clean XP install but I copied my old ArmA profile.

I can't believe this could be the cause of all my troubles...
