Wow, I couldn't believe it when I fired it up (by the way, i got my copy in pasadena at http://www.interactcd.com) . The sounds of gunfire are bad. My game crashes to desktop after 30 minutes (memory leak maybe?)...ugh.. come on BIS....

One thing I'd like to see is a bit more enhanced weather effects. I"m not talking much, either so it should be pretty easy to implement. When it's raining, I can barely see the rain and it doesn't affect visibility much (maybe its just my monitor). But if its raining, I'd like to see a bit more pronounced effects. The thunder sound's pretty weak too. Also, perhaps it's in there already, but I'd like some fog effects, hell it might actually speed up the framerate. The use of fog for example, could make engagements much different. Weapon choices would have to be made based on weather effects. Sniper rifles might not be the weapon of choice for those situation. Ambushes would have to be planned differently than situations where visibility is excellent. It would be nice if these weather effects (rain, time of day, type of day, fog, etc) could be set by the server and not relegate those decisions only to the mission builder. For those winter addon folks, it'd be nice to see some cool snow effects that create limited visibility. One final thing, I think now, there's a potential for some unfairness. To some extent, I think the server should control some of the effects (i.e. smoke, fog, weather, etc). After I patched, my explosion smoke effects were gone and I was wondering why grenades or smoke bombs I threw didn't result in any smoke. This can be "mis"used to someone's tactical advantage. As a CTF'er, I use smoke to mask my approach to flags, or to cover my retreat. Server's should control it. There are options in the OFP preferences to "Lower" the quality of those effects without elimnating them totally and also, those plaeyers with less than stellar systems could lower their resolution too. Anyways, these are just some thoughts...Suma, whatcha think? 14th_Fly

I've been following this website for a while know, checking to see if there's anything new. Â Originally, they were provided a sizeable grant to develop simulations for the military to aid in training. Some of the early pictures I saw either on their site or in their newspaper, showed operationflashipoint-type graphics on a large wall and the soldier (real person) stood in front of it and tried to take control of the situation as it changed around him...anyways... I checked back yesterday and it seems they will be releasing a version that they say is not too different from the military version they developed. Â It's called CS-XII. Â " CS XII, the other game, is a PC title in which players lead a company of about 100" There's not much info on the site (and I've included links below to help guide ya through them). SOme Mechwarrior 3 producers have found their way to this project. Institute for Creative Technologies Wired News Article (Oct. 29, 2001) Link to Game Site (not much info except basic requirements..) Â Yesterday I emailed quicksilver, and they responded that they don't have screenshots for distribution yet. Â CS XII, the other game, is a PC title in which players lead a company of about 100 Future Combat (developers) Reuters.com story on game (Oct. 25, 2001)

i agree. BIS, also just announced, yet another patch for OF.... not many companies continue the support BIS has with this game... This is "their" product. They developed from it. They can profit from it. and it's in their rights, legally, and otherwise to control who has access to their software. keep up the work!

ad, can i not ever discuss what i think adds to immersion? i enjoy reading the comments, both negative or supportive, on these ideas - it's why i visit this forum. move this to OT or whatever, i woulda messaged you personally about this but i couldn't find out how (and im in a bit of a rush) i think you are going a bit overboard here armour. i don't see any of what i discussed as childish rubbish
-
hahah "motorbikes and elephants"? you are one strange dude

If there is wind, does it affect bullet trajectory in Oper. Flash?
-
hah, i'd be the last person to run over a bunny in a tank..hell, i don't even squash bugs. (cows fear me though, because I eat hamburgers like there's no tomorrow). i agree immersion is what makes this game good, and as you recognize, it can excel even more than it does now. .. .

as penance, he should be forced to watch 200 straight hours crocodile hunter repeats a true horror

Ok, here goes, after all that.. Immersion in Operation Flashpoint is quite impressive already, as previous posters have mentioned. However, there are a few things that Operation Flashpoint can do to increase it with little or no appreciable hit on CPU cycles or bandwidth. First is to add more visible weather effects. I have to strain hard to see that it's raining. Other games have much better rain effects. I just think in OF, it needs to be beefed up a little. I can't remembe if there's a fog option in OF editing. IF it is, it should be used more . It'd be nice not to be able to always see to the horizon. Second, add a "quick add civilians" button that intelligently adds them to the background of either single or multiplayer maps. They can be on foot, in vehicles (civilian only), or kicking back in a structure. Via a quick menu (like Rainbow 6 series), when in contact with them you could tell them to leave, stay quiet, or get down with varying levels of compliance. This addition would make you think twice before shooting towards every sound that you know is not your teammate. A vehicle traveling down the road might not be a civilian but instead the enemy trying to be sneaky by not rolling up in a big ass humvee or 5-ton. There could be an option to make these civilians appear in different levels of concentration (i.e like MS Flight Sim 2000 where you choose how heavy airport traffic and objects are). It could be sparse, medium, dense, or none. Ideally, it'd be a server option, not just one for the map designer. Third, and finally (yes folks, it's here): Addition of ANIMALS. Adding animals, like adding more civilans, would be great! And for those that think they'd be repeatedly blown up and who hate cruelty to animals, or fox hunting or whatever, make them either indestructable, or "transparent" (so that people can't hide behind a walking cow as a shield). Or they could die just like any other creature. Birds, small rabbits, deer, elk, bears, all are possible. They could be placed randomly by the game engine using some simple rules (i.e. some animals only can move in the open fields, others only within forests, and others can move where ever. It would require that you also drive more carefully. Cows or other large animals might disable or injure you if you hit them full force - just like in real life. They could be given simple AI (Animal Intelligence) whre they react at a simple level (hehe maybe like the AI soldiers in Delta Force) to different things. (i.e. freeze, like deer, scatter when surprised, or just move merrily along, or attack (like a bear)). Hearing the crunch of leaves in a forest will make you think twice before blasting away because 1) it may be an enemey or 2.) it may not be , 3) it could be an animal and shooting gives away your postition 4.) moving might attract the evil bear towards you... It all adds more things for you to think about... and I say, it makes the game much more interesting. Right now, people are "pixel sensitive." If a pixel in the distance moves. Well, it's either friend or foe and usually you can determine that it aint a friend. Civilians and animals will help keep people from being trigger happy, reward those with patience, and make the game lots more fun. 14th_Fly out. (again) p.s. armourdave, yes you must be getting old and slower
-
hahah pete. oh placebo, that was directed at armourdave, he knows what he wrote and it was he himself who suggested he was getting slow and old.............. so uh, like whatever.

I wrote a long piece on the use of animals in this game (not the locked thread), saw it posted, now its gone..nothing in it was offensive..wondering why its gone or just a forum hiccup..
-
i have no objection to you locking down the other thread (which I again remind you, that I did not write or participate in) and I agree that that one could have gone down a path that would have degenerated more and more to the point of being useless.. that being said, why not see if the one i had written, which was more targeted and brought up a whole host of relevant points dealing twiththe topic of immerision, generated more mature discussion?
-
I did think about the topic before I posted it. In fact, I thought about it for quite a long time. And, I am STILL interested in what other people thought of my ideas, even if they don't happen to include what you think. I come to this board and I see post after post of rehashed things that are never deleted. Do I care? No, because I can choose not to read them.
-
Wrong, My post was not about dropping animals from choppers, or for that matter shooting them. If you would have taken the time to read the post, you might have realized that. In fact, my post, was in response to the locked thread you'll find a few pages down where someone else (not me, because I didn't even contribute to the thread) wrote about blowing up animals. If you are going to be a good forum adminstrator, please take the time to read the posts and not delete them based only on the topic heading. I read the old animal posts and they did not raise the same issues that I did, nor make the same arguments for inclusion in this game. Anyways, whether its old or not, should not be the criteria for deleting a thread, that took me, I might add, a little time to write and think through. My post had absolutely nothing to do with cruelty to animals. 14th_Fly, out.

yeah i did....not there..weird oh well, maybe i'll rewrite it, i thought it was pretty good
