    Domination or Evolution?

Domination is very similar to Evo, you basically start at a base (with ammo boxes, Tanks, planes etc) and Capture occupied towns full of AI. You do this for a number of towns on the map until you win. There are also side missions that can be undertaken. Like Evo there are Para jump flags and MHQs that can be spawned at. hmm lets see if I remember some of the differences.... In Evo The main feature was that you "evolved" through ranks to gain access to better weapons/vehicles - In Dom it is all available right away (Although in the later iterations you can set it to ranked if you like, via mission properties iirc) In Evo players chose what town to attack - In Dom it's automatic In Evo small convoys came through every once a while until the Radio tower was destroyed - In Dom the same thing applies, but the reinforcements are much more and often. In Evo you built up points and could use these points to "call in" some thing, like a precision strike or an ammo box. - In Dom only squad-leaders can do this. In Evo to clear a town you had to destroy the radio tower kill a % of occupying enemy (Don't think it was 100%) - in Dom You must destroy the Radio tower, capture several "camps" in the town, kill a Percent of enemy and some times do other objective (like kill a "drug lord" etc) They are very similar as you can see. I think there used to be more difference back when both game modes where in their infancy. These days there are so many Mission parameters you can set that you can pretty much add in or take out whatever feature you like- eg making Dom ranked etc PS I can't believe there are people who haven't tried DayZ. It is well worth at least seeing what it all about...even if it's just once. There is a high probability you will really enjoy it, even if you don't like zombie horror/mmos/or you feel you can only play "real" MilSim. ;)
  2. I don't believe so, that is separate to this. This is about adjusting/tweaking the tone mapping in an attempt to improve the look of the game. There was separate fix to do with limiting the amount that players can adjust their Gamma and Brightness (eg entering extreme values) via the name.UserProfile file. Although, it is indeed this Tone mapping fix that is making the game overly dark when it is still plenty bright out side. I don't mind dark nights (to a certain extent), it's overly dark afternoons and low light conditions that are bothering me at the moment, with these tone changes. Maybe not my job to say, but guys.... have some patience, don't bash BIS for looking at some thing that might improve the game, or for all we know help with Arma 3. We have no idea how the divide their time and it's not for us to say that they are "wasting time" fixing this(or whatever else) and they could be doing some thing else. I feel embarrassed for the community and bad for the devs when i read stuff like that^

    Domination or Evolution?

In Arma1 it was all about Evolution, I used to play a lot of it then. There where some Domination servers, but not nearly as many Evo servers. When Arma2 came out there was a shift for some reason and the popularity of Evolution fell off and it was mostly Domination that where plentiful. I like both mission types, but at the moment the only real choice is Domination. It's been a while since I checked to see if there are any Evo serves these days, but I don't think there are.
  4. Just wanted to post that I am finding 93825 a bit too dark. It didn't seem too bad on Takistan, but when I was playing on Chernarus today with a world time of about 15:00-16:00, I got overly dark lighting when looking toward forest edges and also when looking toward the sun direction. It was similar to that first "Hunter" vid OMAC posted, although obviously not as extreme as it was around 15:00- 16:00. But it still caused that distracting effect where you keep wanting to lower the "camera"/view so that the sky is not in the picture and the scene lightens so you can actually see clearly. I think small tweeks to the Tone mapping are ok I guess, but I have to ask is there really much point? I find the Brightness and Gamma controls given are quite effective, I usually set brightness to 0.9 and gamma close to 1.1 to give brighter colours and less of a "washed out" look. These Tone changes just seem to kind of highlight the flaws that exist with the Arma2 lighting system, particularly on Chernarus. It has been a long time gripe of mine, the extreme/inaccurate exposure of the player camera. The way you get blinded by out-side light when in a building, they way you feel like moving your view to an odd position to stop the Sun unrealistically overwhelming your view etc (these things do happen in real life, but in Arma I think it's a bit over done). But I have just put up with these things as it is a current engine limitation. I think that first Video OMAC put up perfectly highlights some of the things that are wrong with Arma2s lighting. I don't think it would be a good idea to exasperate it too much with the Tone changes. On a side note, are the problems with player Camera Exposure part of engine limitations or would it actually be possible to tone it back a little bit? Doing that combined with these Tone changes might actually work quite well. But some times I think requests like this fall on deaf ears (like the many requests to alter PP options and tone back Bloom) due it being "artists impression" and said artist not really wanting to change their vision of how the game world should look? :lookaround: PS I do appreciate that the Devs revisit things like this in an effort to improve how the game looks and the fact they ask for our opinion on them. So thanks!
  5. thanks for the new beta. I was wondering though what exactly this means? [93812] Fixed: Restrict gamma value set by profile [93809] Fixed: Restrict brightness value set by profile I seem to be able to set gamma and brightness the same as always.

Jeez man, not everyone who plays is an achievement hunting stat whore, you seem to have some real negativity to this game mode. Have you had a go of it yet? One of the things I like most about it is finding places I never new existed on Chernarus. I like how its just you with your gun ( and maybe a mate), tactically travelling across the country side, taking the best routes to avoid being spotted by other humans, using tree lines and hedges across fields. I like the panic I get when I suddenly hear 2 gun shots in the distance and I hide and observe other humans doing what ever it is they're doing and not even knowing that some one is watching them. I have had 2 people walk past me (within 50m) while I was laying prone in the under growth at the edge of a forest, praying that they wouldn't notice me, which they didn't . For most players this is the magic and it is nothing to do with stats. In a recent interview with RockPapperShotgun, BIS devs where asked what they thought about DayZ, I found the response quite insightful: I hadn't thought of it before I read this, but I have to agree that the last time I had "this" feeling in a BIS game was in those Resistance missions, where it was you, your map, your rifle and survival.

Not at all. I'm just saying that it could be possible for some one else to use a similar model but have it on a different, more military or real world theme. Of course it will take some one clever to come up with the right type of mission. It's obviously a popular model though ( the persistent server), why not use it for the basis on other real world type missions for some folks who don't like the whole zombie/ unreal setting? To me the fact that DayZ exists should be promising to the Milsim fans wanting a PVP mode as popular as DayZ is. It means that with the right person creating it and right mission the potential is there for a really good/ highly popular milsim game PVP mode. And if we already have the perfect PVP gamemode in Arma, then why is it no gives a f-ck about (as you say) ?

What stats? there are no stats as far as I can see, not yet anyway. Stats to me mean some kind of leader board or ranking system, which so far DayZ does not have. The hook of DayZ is the persistence of your player and inventory, that's not really stats (calling it stats gives ppl the wrong impression). This persistent master server is the magic ingredient.. This could be applied to many other missions too (military). And I believe they could be just as popular too, but it has to be easily accessible. This is what PVP fans in the OFP universe have been crying out for for years. A unique game mode that involves player V player that is highly popular ( and isn't just CTF or Hold). The only way this can exist is via something that can be played by casual players. A hugely popular PVP mode that is complex and requires lots of team work is a pipe dream I believe.

nice over view by those guys
  10. Will it help to fix this bug? https://dev-heaven.net/issues/30017 Any improvement to the small but annoying light problems will be very welcome.
  11. Was there ever any investigation into drops in performance while zooming in/out due to the new LOD swapping changes? Thanks for the new beta, some nice changes there.
  12. Ha dunno about pros, maybe McArma. I'm just wandering headless chicken :D About Inspector, it is useful. But I only turn to it when I have some problem, like the above with AA. It appears you can not force AA on Arma2 via Nvidia any more. I eventually gave up on this as the post process AA types that Bis added are working well enough that I don't miss MSAA too much now. I can't see too much advantage (I'm not aware of any) to using Inspector for Arma at the moment. Maybe others may know of some nice things you can do with it. If your looking for more eye candy over what BIS's in game settings can give. I would suggest going into to your Nvidia Control panel and to the Arma OA profile and set Anisotropic Filtering to x16. This has no effect on performance and makes the textures look much sharper. I think BIS's in game maximum AF setting is equivalent to Nvidia x8 Filtering.

Army of the Czech Republic DLC

Yeah that would have been nice. The one in this DLC is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aero_L-39_Albatros Also in Arma3 and OA. Still good DLC though.

Army of the Czech Republic DLC

Upgraded Chernarus would be very welcome. More enter-able buildings would be included I'm sure. And maybe better performance due to new methods of object construction and foliage (like in OA)

Army of the Czech Republic DLC

Looks interesting. I agree with the odd timing and bad screen shots. Second map might be more like Taki, looking at the fourth screen shot? I'll probably buy,if The server I play on incorporates the new stuff into Domination :) I'm sick of that damn plane though, it's in Arma 3 too isn't it? Arnt there any other cool 3rd /4th gen fighters these factions could use?
  16. I get the same problem with Nvidia. It happens every now and again (maybe once every 5 games). The screen freezes for a period of time, it looks for all the world like my pc has frozen, I even hear sound loop. Then the screen the screen flickers and goes black. Then "Receiving" appears on the screen for a bit and then the game comes back fully and I can continue to play. For me, the whole process can be up to 50-60 seconds. After I have finished playing the game and exit I see a message in the notification area/System Tray saying: "Display Driver has Stopped Responding and has recovered" I only ever have this with Arma games.
  17. When we Pre-ordered Operation ArrowHead we got this nice (huge) map of Takistan on one side and Chernarus on the other: http://imageshack.us/f/175/20100625a2oamaptakistan.png/ I am actually making really good use of the Chernarus map now with DayZ :) :868: Do you think BIS could give us the same offer for a Limnos map with Arma3?

    Congratulations Bohemia Interactive

Herbal, you and others (OMAC) just need to play the game for a half hour to save your self such confusion and to see what is actually like. The game stores data about your character and gear etc on a remote server, it's tied to you via your CD key....no where do you have to enter you email address or "sign Up". If you are that paranoid maybe you should just avoid the internet all together. Bis know more about you here on this forum when you make a post then they do when you join a DayZ server.
  19. Can any one tell me this ^, which ticket is it? So I can report the stutter.
  20. -=seany=-

    Congratulations Bohemia Interactive

eh? All I said was that it had stress tested Arma's network in ways not seen before, which in turn helped (and will help) them to see how they can make the network code better. Of course it wasn't planned, more like a welcome opportunity.
  21. -=seany=-

    Congratulations Bohemia Interactive

Actually that's exactly what they (DayZ Bug fixes) did. For example, the network fixes where as a result of the extreme stress testing it was put under from DayZ. No other mission has allowed them to test the network like this, or see how it behaves under such high load.

    Domination in Chernarus or Takistan?

Same here. What I'd really like to see is some other user made Islands used. Domination Duala would be nice. Or...even Takistan where the human team plays as Takistani (OPFOR) Vs USA and Brit in the towns. I can't believe I no one else wants to do this. We have had Operation Arrowhead for 2 years and I have never really used any of their vehicles online. Too many patriotic US/UK server hosts who don't want to play the "bad guys" :) ? I dunno but it's a bloody boring attitude. I want to attack town in a T55 or T34 dammit and kill some Bradley's and Abram's. And what about that BTR60, that looks great to use.

I can't think of anything that DayZ would cause to be fixed that wouldnt not be of benefit to Arma. Got any examples? So far: We have had backpack handling improved as a result of Dayz = win for Arma (the Mil Sim) We have had better (and we will get better) network improvements thanks to DayZ = Win for Arma We have had fixes to the communication system, again thanks to DayZ = Win for Arma I don't see anything that could cause Arma to be become any less of the game we all know and love due to fixes or changes to help a game mode like DayZ...only benefits for everyone. Personally, I think it is highly likely that BIS will create a brand new Standalone game based on DayZ. It easily popular enough for them to consider this. Just look at Take On Helicopters, the concept is not that different. Eg take a popular concept from Arma (flying Helis In this case) and create a separate game for it. And ToH is no where near as popular as DayZ. I don't really mind what they do, I would be just as happy to have them leave it as a game mode in Arma. It will be interesting to see what happens.
  24. With this beta I am getting noticeably worse stuttering when pressing (and releasing) my zoom view button. It is very reminiscent of the kind of performance problems we used to get in Arma1 (and early Arma2 iirc) while zooming. I have just tested on my own in the editor (Chernarus) between Beta 93160 and 92333 (the last beta I had before the current one). 93160: Zoomed out FPS : 40 Zoom transition FPS : 22 :- When the stutter occurs Zoomed in FPS : 35 92333: Zoomed out FPS : 40 Zoom transition FPS : 28 Zoomed in FPS : 35 I am guessing it is related to [93017]Fixed: LOD blending not working reliably I have not noticed any change in how the LODs are swapping. But this new stutter is extremely annoying, so for me this is is a major step backward. It would be good if the LOD swapping could be fixed, but to be honest I am kind of used to it now and don't find it that distracting. Not nearly as much as this stutter anyway. [93017]Fixed: LOD blending not working reliably Which is the actual DevHeaven report for this bug, so I can report it there too?
