To the people who are playing ArmA, how is it?
znashin replied to evilnate's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
Yes. I was attacking some soldiers while I was prone in grass. The grass hinders the sight a lot but provides no visual cover. It was hard to attack that group of soldiers. While in plain sight I could see all the soldiers with no problem but when switching to visor view I was not able to target them anymore. It´s a bit weird. Oh no! This was my biggest concern, I'm very disappointed to hear it didn't make it to the game. What's the point of grass when it's not a concealment? I don't need grass when it's just for eyecandy, remove it or fix it. because right now it just unfair. Btw, znashin. Where did you see these alpha blending on soldiers pics? Sorry Blanco I can't find the thread that contained the well picked out screenies. They showed soldiers whose feet and shins quite clearly blurred (nice) into the colour of the grass. I was excited enough at the time to send the link to my xfire friends and was convinced that soldiers at range would be partially blended into grass that was or wasn't visible on other clients. My only concern was whether the ai would respond to hidden players. Bah. Would've been the icing on the cake. If anyone remembers the thread or has a talent for searching please give the link. It had screenie comparisons to jo if that helps. -

I dont have the game yet, but I've thought of just that. It's kinda obvious you wont be hidden in the grass when the grass is not visible from distance. I dont know how a patch would solve that though. Would be nice if it could, but.. Oh nos. There were screenies taken showing alpha blending on soldiers in grass, even if the grass wasn't visible. I take it this feature didn't make it in. Horrible news. I thought it was one of the better new features. Would've given infantry the stealth and ambush potential they deserve in the wilds. I was looking forward to lying in foot high grass and laying an ambush for a convoy or passing squad. . Bad news. Still, having the bushes and trees as visual cover is still ok. -
An especially quick release in the yookay would be nice. Other than that I'm not fussed. Oh wait, we're short on tea towells so throw in a fabric map.

Aggghhhhh - This subject should be dead and buried, the question has been answered a hundred times. If you are lying in grass you will be hidden (invisible) even if the grass is not rendered. I'll be playing it exclusively coop though and afaik it's still not clear if the grass will obscure the ai l.o.s. This could be a game breaker for me. Getting shot by bots that shouldn't be able to see you behind soft cover in such a lethal game is a major issue for some.

For me there were three things that made ofp ofp. Massive, varied, believable geography. Moddability, above and way beyond anything that came before it. Being able to look around and totally immerse myself in a vehicles gritty, exciting interior. Everytime I'm travelling in a Hind or a Blackhawk, as a pilot or a passenger, to a mission area I get that twelve-year-old-trying-to get-to-sleep-on-the-night-before-christmas-and-I'm-getting-a-bmx feeling. Whether it's a Hummer or a Hind the interiors really do make me believe I'm actually there instead of, as original poster said, a more fps/HUD display. I can't imagine this sort of modelling is easy but it is absolutely priceless in my opinion. Turned out to be a bit of a thank you BIS post so thank you BIS but my point is, for me, this was as much an integral part of ofp as anything else and it wouldn't be the same without it.

I think this will be more of a game2 feature. IIRC everything in game2 has a weight although I've seen a dev quote saying the ARMA inventory will be a surprise so who knows. It would be lovely and unlock so many playability possibilities. As for it looking bad, if you made a generic "man carrying crate" anim for items over a certain weight, that would be more than good enough for me. You can put sub directories in OFP missions folder. It might take a minute in windows but I like this way better as it still allows you to play the same missions with different mod folders.

I'm thirty years old. Please stop condescending. It was funny though. Sorry. You phrased it as though superior tactics is the only reason the U.S has a strong military which is absurd. I'm not here for arguments so lets try and keep those sort of opinions to ourselves.

Going to hate myself in the morning but I agree with Ukraineboy. Making mods tiny by today's standards just to suit a minority doesn't sound right. 56k is 90s technology and nobody is designing games to run on 3Dfx cards just to suit people who can't afford up to date computers. Software should always be coded to be as compact and concise as possible but sacrificing potential quality for the sake of megs just isn't the way things should be done nowadays. I'm not saying gear the game's engine up to the point that dial-ups are occluded, just don't let content suffer for the sake of megs. At the end of the day dial-ups can still download large files, it just takes longer. It's a thin line though, I agree.

I'd like to see an "align on me" command to instantly re-align a squad's formation on my facing. Also would like to see the AI stop moving in perfect formation all the time. From a distance the wedge formation of a full squad looks like a gaggle of disciplined, migratory geese. A little disparity between individual troop's timing and speed would be easy to code and would suspend alot of disbelief. If the bounding overwatch and reaction to terrain/cover is well done I thnk it will sort out most of the problems mentioned on this topic. Oh, I'd also like to see scan horizon command make a return but with AI using their heads to scan rather than acting like turrets and spinning on the spot.

Think I read that BIS don't know if the license for Linda will extend into third party usage.

I disagree Deadie. I wouldn't have thought soldiers in the field talk like robots unless there is an established protocol such as a fire mission or target identification. When it comes to giving orders surely using clear, concise language is preferable. I'm not multi-linguistic but certainly in english structuring sentences makes them easier to understand and missing, unheard or mis-understood words can be guessed using the remaining words. In authentic war films you never hear the searge barking out 3..engage..officer..9 o clock. He's shouting Turner take out that machine gun nest at the top of the hill, Roberts you go with him. I know names and geography are out of the qustion but my point is they talk as they would outside of combat albeit with more emotion and urgency.
