Balschoiw, [APS]Gnat: even though I was never a soldier, I realize what you're talking about. That is, however, real life. In the game, no matter how much I'd like to put my weapon in a waterproof bag, I cannot, because the whole concept is missing. I cannot even try to hold the rifle above my head, because there is no such animation. I also cannot lighten the load of my in-game character, because it has no load: it's just a bunch of colored triangles. My whole point is that the game tries to be "realistic" in a totally insignificant part of the game, which is still very annoying. It happened to me multiple times that in some missions I end up in water (for whatever reason - not always my stupidity) and I have to swim. In many missions there are no weapon/ammo crates lying around, so this is pretty much the end of it: I must reload, because I lose the most important items imaginable (in the game.) Keep in mind, in RL even if the gun goes rusty from salty seawater, you can still grab a heavy branch and have a chance of clubbing an enemy (however small.) Or you might have a knife, etc. In the game, you're totally screwed. So while upping the time limit from swimming might work, I'd only accept something so long that they might as well remove the whole thing. I fully consider weapon dropping in water a bug. And if you're going for realism, how about getting the NVGoggles not turn black when there is a miniscule light source far away, as one example?
-
Nope. But if I were a soldier and had to swim, I'd sooner loose all other items from the 20+ kg backpack than my gun and ammo. On enemy territory, your weapon is your life. In ArmA, there is no option to drop backpack items to lighten the load, but you drop important items without even noticing it. BTW, what do Navy Seals do on missions - use swear words on the enemy to scare them away?
-
Yes, this most definitely should be fixed in the final patch.
-
Will play and let you know. Thanks for the update!
-
Good mission, thank you!

I think you're not entirely right. I wouldn't expect perfect image quality from NVGoggles, but the one in Arma blacks out for me even if there is a distant light source far away. I just don't think that RL soldiers do missions in complete blackness, even if the device is otherwise awkward. I stopped doing night missions completely, because for much of the time I was staring at a completely black screen when there are light sources in the distance in the line of sight. It's very annoying to play like that. I'd image autogain to adjust for light levels, but light has falloff in RL, which I think is not considered for the NVGoggles.

It'd be nice to see the buggy muzzleflash issue fixed: Image Notice that the UAZ is already destoryed, yet, after reload, the muzzleflash shows up on the machinegun.
-
Dynamic War seems to work well with 1.09 - the save issue is gone.

Nice island! Would it be too much too to have the Queen's Gambit dependency removed? I have QG but I don't like it (I don't load it) and I'd prefer addons that are not dependent on QG.
-
Can you please make it independent of QG? I know I can just click away the error message, but if I make a mission using these guys and someone plays it, it looks poor. And nowadays I prefer to play without QG, because of the ugly loading screens. (Its missions are not that great, either.)
-
Thank you!
-
I simply removed QG from the list of addons. I, too, despise those ugly screens and the whole QG is a mediocre set anyway, so I don't mind not having it. It'd indeed be nice to have way to get rid of those screens when QG is loaded.

1. Tweak AI hearing to be between the earlier pinpoint hearing and the current (beta) deafness. 2. Tweak SVD Dragunov loading time - currently it's too slow. 3. Tweak NVG reaction to light sources: it blacks out too easily. 4. Tweak tree LODs - what we have now looks bad and is constantly morphing, even after minimal movements. 5. Fix bikes: they can be shot up (3-4 shots) so that the looks changes to the destroyed texture but it can still be used. It takes a few more shots to actually destroy it. 6. SPR has no muzzle flash when not looking through the optics.
-
I saw that, too. Also, the AI being too deaf is a big problem: one can actually drive a UAZ right behind them, get out and shoot them in the back without being noticed. There has to be a halfway solution between their earlier pinpoint accuracy and the current total deafness. BIS, please tweak this for the final 1.09. Now that the beta is out and many other problems fixed, I think we could wait a bit more for the final patch if a few more tweaks can be made.

I'm by no means a military expert (never been in one, to begin with ), but flipping a tank on its side would definitely require a bit more substantial than an RPG.
-
I, too, like the new recoils - finally there is a chance to actually hit something with the guns. Some recoils are indeed a bit on the easy side, but if I have to choose between 1.08 and 1.09, I'd vote for 1.09 two hands down. Before 1.09, I used Q1184's recoils, those were very good and I might switch to those if 1.09 gets released as it is and he releases a new version.
-
Unfortunately, it seems that problems with the NVG were not corrected, which makes it nearly unusable. The constant blacking out of NVGs in response to even the tiniest light sources far away makes night missions a total pain. I don't know how NVGs are in real life, but in the game they're quite bad.

You're likely to be right. I'd still just have somewhat lower quality plants than the constant morphing. I'm willing to bet that a considerable amount of repainting happens just because of the constant LOD changes. Of course, I might be wrong, but on my machine, I keep seeing plants change shape even if I turn just a few degrees. All in all, 1.09 is still a very welcome patch and it does play better than before. Getting rid of the plant morphing would be a nice addition, but it's by no means a must-have fix.
-
I agree, that tree morphing is horrible, it should really be fixed.

Yippieee!!! Thank you very much for everyone who worked on this and for BIS for the help/permission to make it! Much appreciated! <off to download>

1.08 worked fine for me with maxmem=768. I'm now trying 1.09 with maxmem=1024 and turning off the Windows paging file. I'll be back with results. In general, 1.09 seems to be better, but plant detail keeps changing very frequently (plant morphing.)

Quick feedback: - Overall, the game seems to run a lot more smoothly than before. It's hard to put into words, but the whole game feels a lot more solid now. - Driving vehicles seems to be a bit better, although still effed up. - Not sure if others noticed this, but plant morphing (LOD change) seems a lot more pronounced. Annoying as hell. I keep seeing plants (entire forests) changing shape as I turn my head even just 1 or 2 degrees. It's not only annoying, it's severly distracting and looks downright ugly. - Saved game loading seems faster. - Sound inside vehicles seem waaay too quiet. Driving a Humvee is like walking on thick carpet. Same with choppers. - I'm not overly fond of weapon recoil in games but even I noticed that weapons (M4/M16) don't seem to have much of a recoil now. Is it just me or were they almost completely removed? I didn't like the original recoils but Q1184's sharper recoil pack was good. - Didn't notice much AI behavior change, but it seems they're not as pinpoint accurate as before. Didn't play a whole lot, though, so I might be imagining this. - Edit 1: as mentioned by someone already, a bike can be shot up (3-4 shots) so that it changes to the destroyed texture but it can still be used. It takes a few more shots to actually destroy it. - Edit 2: persistent muzzleflash is still not fixed. It happens on SPR and mounted machine guns: after reloading, the guns have a static, persistent muzzleflash shown until the next shot. It's not a huge problem but it looks strange. It seems to happen after the gun is reloaded at least once, then saved and reloaded. The game might have to be restarted for it. Overall, a decent job from BIS, thanks for it.

I hope you'll still make a 1.09-specific version. I really like your mod - in 1.08 it made the game a lot more playable. I don't have 1.09 yet, so I need to see that first, but from what I read, some recoil tweaking will not hurt.

I wanted to post a reply to Wolle's comment about "not complaining the right way", but I changed my mind. I don't know if Wolle works for BIS or not, but it really doesn't matter, because he's a moderator of the official forums. Pray, tell me, how commenting on customers like that will help with the sales of ArmA 2?

Just to add one more thing here (I agree with ethne): I really, really want to like ArmA. I loved OFP but I'm disappointed in ArmA because of all the old problems (from OFP) and all the additional bugs. BIS really makes it hard to like/use their game. I'd really like to be proven wrong about my low opinion of BIS. And - based on experience - I, too, think that ArmA is going to be a buggy, unfinished game. Prove me wrong.
