    Keyboard Recommendations Please

Das Keyboard Ultimately though Keyboard is all about preference. Some people like a clicking action (like me) yet some people like having tons of extra features such as you have with the G15.

    arma helicoptor flying/landing

I can't stress this enough myself. If you use a HOTAS like the X52 (which I would recommend), bind autohover to a button you're comfortable with. Modern combat helicopters do have a hover autopilot which can be engaged once the pilot has slowed the vertical and horizontal velocities of the aircraft. However, make sure you bring your aircraft to a slow speed so you don't quickly gain altitude as the computer tries to slow you down.

    MK 17 EGLM question

Still better than having no sight at all.

    Question about team commads

Yes, the old command menu is still accessible, including the action menu which is activated by selecting a soldier and pressing the 6 key. To see the menu while you have someone selected press backspace.

    FLIR in AH64?

I think only the Gunner gets FLIR through his targeting camera. The pilot gets Night Vision only.

ARMA 2 (OA) : DLC discussion thread

Actually yeah, it would be kind of nice to see a conflict where the U.S. and Russia are working together, similar to Bosnia in the 90s.

    Close quarter AI

I would argue this is less an AI problem and more a issue with the mission designer failing to account for AI that may flee. A wiser idea would be to use a trigger zone surrounding the town that fires and sets a "success" variable once all of the enemy AI have died or fled.

    Overwhelmed

I would also recommend reading Dslyecxi's guide: http://ttp2.dslyecxi.com/ Covers intermediate and advanced aspects of the game, and it will help you offline and online.

    (SP)ACE2 The Conqueror

Actually, I found the other two Black Hawks outside and they can get into those. Wish I had noticed those earlier. Great mission m8. However, I have a question. (WARNING: SPOILER)

    (SP)ACE2 The Conqueror

I can't, for the life of me, get anyone to board in the chopper. It seems like the AI just can't navigate around that part of the base at all. They consistently get stuck on the wrong side of the entrance barricade, and report "Negative" indicating they can't complete the order. Any hints?
  12. I would play it! I also have a feature suggestion; throw ACE2 in the mix. Realism and zombies make me .

    ARMA 2 to ps3

He was talking about Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
  14. No offense, but if I were your roommate or brother, I would probably hold off as well if it meant you kept buying me free games.

What are you talking about? When you buy FRAPS you get updates for free forever.

Excellent point. So OFPDR apparently can't get us out of squad level combat even. Sion Lenton, the executive producer, made a comment on the official forums that there is no dedicated server in development, and he gave no hint that they are considering one.

    ARMA 2 to ps3

THANK YOU! Finally someone who sees the point I've been trying to make in other threads all week. Dragon Rising is dumbed down so it sells better, not because its "on the console". BIS could release a non-dumbed down on any of the consoles, and it would sell, but only to the same crowd you see buying it on PC already. Its just not worth their effort (as much as I would love to see a PS3 version). Codemasters didn't want to make a mil-sim in the first place, they wanted to make a game that is accessible to people. :p I give my thumbs up for the thought of ArmA2 on the PS3, but realistically you need a PS3 programmer to do it. The architectures are wayyyyy different. Programming for a Cell processor is hell, and the PS3 apparently has other hardware faults (*cough* shitty memory management *cough*) that make it hard nearly impossible to program for anyways.
  18. Why are you paying for it and not your roommate or brother? I would think they would pay for their own copies.

These two responses again show how ignorant you are about the software industry. There are no truly "final" deadlines in a modern software project. You get to a point in your iterations where you will have spent too much money to actually turn a decent profit from the product. At the end of each iteration, whether you use the vanilla iterative method or some agile method, you have to do some kind of risk analysis to see if the product is worth releasing. This is a complex process; risk analysis is never easy, and it gets harder as a project progresses. During this phase is also where you revisit finished (or even partially finished) features and decide if they need revisions. Its hard to argue that this was a finished product. No dedicated server (which it apparently says it has on the PC version's box), missing features, and shoddy, unfinished netcode are all proof of this. Quazal is apparently still working on the netcode since they didn't stress test it in the first place. (Although in CM's defense my understanding is that Quazal is one of the slowest in the business on getting anything done.) You really don't know what it takes to make a good AI, much less how much time is required. There are programmers who all they do is make AI, and they spend months working on it. If you're interested in just how difficult it is, I would recommend reading a couple decent books on the subject. Bingo. But... Hate to break it to you, but that's not always true. Business, especially software, is never white or black. Major corporations do what they do not because they just need more profit, but because it takes that much more money to grow. Corporations that concentrate on consumer software, such as video game companies, tend to cut corners more, because frankly your average consumer will take it and won't pay the price you would have had if you hadn't cut the corner. Corporations that concentrate on professional software however tend to strive to give a better product, because cutting corners often means losing customers to your competitor. From what I've witnessed, smaller corporations make better consumer software, and larger corporations make better professional software. Its why most of the smaller game companies tend to make better software. (iD, Bohemia Interactive, Valve, Bethesda just to name a few) EA, Codemasters, Ubisoft, Activision, and others tend to make less great games and more crappy games (or rehashes) because its more expensive to run their company. In a perfect world your one great game would sell enough copies to keep your 20,000 employee company afloat for the next year while you work on your next blockbuster, but it just doesn't work that way. There was doubt before? ;) (I jest.)

Yep, it does. The first time I it happened I kinda did a "Woah... that was kind of cool." and got shot from the guy I was trying to run from in MP, which, at least for me, seems to be the saving grace so far. It is one of the better MP games shooters I have right now for the PS3. Because we're having more fun talking about how much this game sucks instead of playing it. Also:

I have a few. All I've seen is ball and subsonic. If you have a grenade launcher you can see any of the grenades you're carrying in the ammo type menu as well. Standard fare for Marines (HE, Smoke), but less than ArmA or ArmA 2 (or even the original OFP) has as far as I've been able to tell. The SMAW also has two options, HEAA and HEDP. Again, that's no different from ArmA 2. I agree, the tracers are stupid. Tracers on an M4 or M16 make me cringe anyways. I haven't seen the AI do it, but I've done it myself. Sprint at the door and just before colliding with it, hit the open button. You don't know much about the software business do you? Your project is always run by the business, and the business is above your project manager. CM produces the quality they do because they hire a specific type of developer and I'm sure they make sure that they keep a short leash on the dev teams. There are broken promises because the business wanted those promises broken. They did a risk analysis, and they estimated the game would still sell if they released it in its current state. This always happens on this style of development cycle. You are constantly looking at your builds, and managers are meeting to ask and answer the question "Is this what we want?". Most of the "broken promises" are the kinds of things you can't just release a patch for. The AI is one of them, graphics are another. They did their risk analysis, and they underestimated the outcome. How is this even funny? I think many of us have strong respect here for the BIS developers, past or present. (Especially us who are also software developers; simulations of any sort or complexity are never easy.) I'm surprised you even have the tenacity to use "BIS dev" as a derogative.

    Dragon Rising has been released

Good point. Still, I hold by my claim that the modern consoles could handle it. A PC has a lot of other background processes going on, while a console can devote all resources to the game. Hell, the PS3 is powered by the IBM Cell Processor. If it wasn't for the fact that programming for the Cell is reminiscent of programming for the Motorolla 68xxx series (horrible, horrible memories), I'm sure it would be a more popular platform for high graphics and high physics games.

Modern consoles would have no issues with a game world as big as ArmA. In fact there are many console games that DO have game worlds as big as ArmA and ArmA2. I would like to point at Fallout 3 as an example, which I've played on both PS3 and PC and they're identical. Neither are gimped, and Fallout 3 has a world that rivals ArmA's in size. There is an old adage in the software world that rings true in every project. There is money, quality, and time. Pick two. They picked money and time here, so they came out with a subpar product. Frankly, as a owner of this game on console, its just as shitty as it sounds on PC. They took out the editor, they have some horrible network code, and it has the crappiest graphics out of any of my games in my PS3 collection, which hints they didn't take the time to actually do some decent optimizations to the game world for the consoles. The game, PC exclusive or not, would have sucked this bad period.
