RWR and TWS are both separated from the main designation system RWR is a 360° passive detecting antenna, if I remember well (my combat flight sim days are far away :) ) TWS is a system gathering all type of threats from different systems, including RWR. The representation of all this in the cockpit differs from aircrafts to aircrafts. RWR in US aircrafts will give you bearing, signal force and type (air, ground) of radar sources on a "top down, 360°, radar like" representation, along with an exact radar type (SAM type XXX, long range radar type YYY, etc...) and their "state" (scanning, tracking, locked, launched) through specific noises a pilot learns and knows by heart TWS is usually big BEEP BEEP and threat representation on one of the main display (MFD) of the cockpit, if I'm not mistaken. Russian equivalent would be the Berzoya, a very rusty looking display (ofc, there is way more avionics behind :) ) giving bearing, type and state of threat. I don't know much of IR detecting countermeasures, I've only been told they do exist now, and perhaps in more numbers that I would have thought. Thing is, in the config files of A2/OA, there's no differentation made between IR seeking missiles and radar seeking ones. So it may make sense, in the ArmAVerse, to simply state all aircrafts are equipped with systems detecting both threat types, and look at what can be done to correct the over-effectiveness of the countermeasures -

Just for information : There are devices today that detect heat signatures of missile launches, so TWS systems today do not warn only on radar-based missiles, but on IR missiles too. It's not too much I think to see warning on IR launches. Now, having proper RWR (ie, Radar detectors which will indicate radar sources, no matter if they have fired yet or not) + TWS indicating Threats of any type detectable (Radar based, IR based) would certainly be a plus. As well as toning down countermeasure effectiveness would do well. like for example make the flare / chaff ineffective if it's live for too short (ie, making them less likely to decoy close missile launches) -
I'm sorry, but it doesn't make any sense. And the few that seems understandable talk about issues I've not seen. 1.54 servers not working? I wonder on which servers I play, then.... male voice making player disconnect? server restart? oO wtf are you smoking?

Yeah, me too play on BCA, so what? You're complaining about pissing contest when you're the one coming with this "I'm ûber leet" s**t ? Sorry but yes, most of my armor engagements on BCA AAS are by popping out of cover or shooting from far enough away that the opponent won't know where the missile came from. It's really not that difficult. (Not counting that most players there are of little threat usually apart from half a dozen good shooters there, who do rarely use tanks) And no, I'm no uber leet player @CG : Kind of argumentation I prefer to read, tbh Well, in part, if you're caught in the open it's a bit of your own fault, even if, yes, gameplay mechanisms (or lack of) won't help you there, that's true. 1) Not sure if it's that unnatural seeing OA environment 2) That would sure help, I agree 3) True that 4) Are they usable prone? (I'm not realism specialist enough in this department) 5) True, but interrupting to go in what anim? :)
-
And you clearly didn't understood the advice : don't switch weapons in the open. Do it in cover, you won't have this issue of being fired at by angry crewmen. If you don't have nearby cover when shooting, it's a planification fault, not a game engine fault. Though for certain weapons, I agree that switching on the move should be possible. It's not the case with launchers, though, if you ask me

I'll repeat for people who didn't get it : nearly != exactly Gun do not come back exactly at the same place, like they were doing with old recoils (I'm talking about coming back to the exact same pixel place), permitting long range spam with precise fire that completely stupid and unrealistic (gameplay and realism breker). I again tested long time last night, CQB is a non issue, the recoil factor on 5.56 weapons is that low that you can CQB as easily as before
-
Gun don't come back auto-magically in the exact same place, not a single 1/4 mm away from original position after a shot. No one does that They may come back around original place, nearly at the same place. Never exactly at the same place. Nearly != exactly So old recoils were all, but realisitics With current recoils, rapid fire with 5.56 is nothing hard. It actually makes the difference between 7.62 & 5.56 more realistic. The only reason I see people complaining is because they can't be arsed with realining their sight. I call this laziness From both gameplay and realism point of view, these changes make sense. Win on both account

no more ridiculous "spam LMB around target for easy kill @400m" for you, too bad... no more "use your DMR/SDV as an automatic rifle" either... I don't know why, but I was feeling the outrage coming! :) It's always too hard to have to learn and master smtg a lil bit, people will always prefer the easy way You'll notice the thread you linked is far from full of complaints, rather people stating their agreement with new recoils, with few adjustments in the early beta releases which get done int latest releases

Unfortunately the campaign can't be played on a dedicated server. There are events happening to the main characters which are synchronized to events for AI units and such, and AI are handled by the server, which means synchro would be lost and things would get blocked. The only way to play campaign online is to host it via the "host" option inthe campaign menu

The price is watered down, too... But that's something people are soooo quick to disregard in these days of "I want it all now for free"...

Suggestions that would make Arma II / AO more popular
whisper replied to polar bear's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Ever played AAS? Count the time you spend from your spawn point to objective.... And this has nothing to do with popularity, I was pointing out that 10+ minutes drive are not a necessary signature of ArmA2 gameplay. Far from it, in fact the necessary signature of ArmA2 is more on the line with "you can do whatever you want". Certainly not fixed, immuable gameplay. With this state of mind (that OFP gameplay should be this and that and nothing else) back in OFP days, certain things like CTI/Warfare wouldn't have seen the light. As for going personnal, please elaborate. I'd be quite amused by your assumption about my playstyle. So, what type of a gamer am I? :) -

As usual, as soon as the word "accessibility" is thrown around, the elitism crap shows its ugly face. A2 crowd smarter than usual FPS players? BS More teamplay / tactics on A2 average server? I urge you to go test public ones where everyone runs alone with its uber Sniper(or TI) / AT equipement in a tank doing is own business without a once of coordination, communication or anything. The only difference on these servers with basic COD servers? Scale and speed of game. Everything else (teamplay, realism, yadaa yadaa, you name it) is on the same level on public servers, whatever the game. More teamplay / tactics on A2 closed / clan servers than on other games closed servers? Most elitists here wouldn't survive the amount of teamplay and tactics needed on competition on other games, and still I see these elitist comments on "we don't want COD kiddies here!!!111" Shame.... And so what? This game is opened, free enough to permit anyone to make a gamemode where driving 10+ minutes without contact is not needed, and this without losing much scope and scale. And without touching your own precious gamemode where you want this type of long drives, on top of it! All the best of both worlds. @metalcraze: For your edification : http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1715343&postcount=40 BIS is working on this very feature. It's probably the most important feature for the future of this game, imho. Nothing impossible, quite the contrary -
British Troops DLC released & Official 1.01 Update
whisper replied to Pauldarrington's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
It was already listed from the beginning. And will be available to all OA users (non BAF users too) through usual patch -
Well, they obviously do something to go past the signature system, and maybe BE should something about that?
-
I have it too in CO install. From what I gathered around, it's the Intel JPEG Library DLL

Players should NEVER have to install add-ons

^- this :) Check ID-Tech engines for specifics. Simple settings on the server to tell if the download should be done through the game server itself, an external web server (which can appear to be hosted on the same physical machine, or not), no download at all. On client side, you get the option to download and reconnect to same server, or skip and go back to server list. Simple and efficient -
Most have switched to OA EDIT : and welcome back :)

The 'fire' command is still bugged.
whisper replied to IronEddie's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - BETA PATCH TESTING
Indeed, the issue description is pretty lacking :D -
If it means what I think it means, then it's not a really good sign, it would mean the server is buffering some network messages (inbound or outbound I don't know), probably because it is busy and cannot handle the message right now, or because the settings of the server do not permit the message to be put in a net packet immediately and will need to be put in the next packet. Does the server often shows desync with clients?

/don't care, fun to be having on both sides

Try using DynoGrabber : http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Dynamic_Object_Compositions (see the part about Creating you own Composition) It can generate the list of objects in a defined zone, like your town

Wow, elitism much, guys, mmh? I don't think personnaly that the very basic controls are hard, they are quite classical, for movement, firing... And some others default controls are indeed very weird. Like the "Hold Breath" defaulting to the same key as zoom view, resulting in your soldier constantly breathing heavy. Or "Double Tap" to sprint, not really intuitive. Or chopper controls which are ... well, I don't know what they were thinking when they used these default keys, tbh.... There are ways to map these basic functions to easy / intuitive / accessible places, and keep the advanced functions at other places, without touching at all to the level of simulation in the game. Too many people getting overdefensive when someone starts talking about game accessibility, like the game should be made obscure for no reason .... That said, you can't command troops when you're not the leader, and A2 keyword is versatile : ie, you can be put in non-leader role, you're not forced into leading
