    The Iraq Thread

Even if you disagree with the sentiment, its still a very moving and powerful speech </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">"We go to liberate not to conquer. We will not fly our flags in their country, We are entering Iraq to free a people and the only flag which will be flown in that ancient land is their own. Show respect for them. There are some who are alive at this moment who will not be alive shortly. Those who do not wish to go on that journey, we will not send. As for the others I expect you to rock their world. Wipe them out if that is what they choose. But if you are ferocious in battle remember to be magnanimous in victory. Iraq is steeped in history. It is the site of the Garden of Eden, of the Great Flood and the birthplace of Abraham. Tread lightly there. You will see things that no man could pay to see and you will have to go a long way to find a more decent, generous and upright people than the Iraqis. You will be embarrassed by their hospitality even though they have nothing. Don't treat them as refugees for they are in their own country. Their children will be poor, in years to come they will know that the light of liberation in their lives was brought by you. If there are casualties of war then remember that when they woke up and got dressed in the morning they did not plan to die this day. Allow them dignity in death. Bury them properly and mark their graves. It is my foremost intention to bring every single one of you out alive but there may be people among us who will not see the end of this campaign. We will put them in their sleeping bags and send them back. There will be no time for sorrow. The enemy should be in no doubt that we are his nemesis and that we are bringing about his rightful destruction. There are many regional commanders who have stains on their souls and they are stoking the fires of hell for Saddam. He and his forces will be destroyed by this coalition for what they have done. As they die they will know their deeds have brought them to this place. Show them no pity. It is a big step to take another human life. It is not to be done lightly. I know of men who have taken life needlessly in other conflicts, I can assure you they live with the mark of Cain upon them. If someone surrenders to you then remember they have that right in international law and ensure that one day they go home to their family. The ones who wish to fight, well, we aim to please. If you harm the regiment or its history by over enthusiasm in killing or in cowardice, know it is your family who will suffer. You will be shunned unless your conduct is of the highest for your deeds will follow you down through history. We will bring shame on neither our uniform or our nation.[regarding chemical/biological weapons] It is not a question of if, it's a question of when. We know he has already devolved the decision to lower commanders, and that means he has already taken the decision himself. If we survive the first strike we will survive the attack. As for ourselves, let's bring everyone home and leave Iraq a better place for us having been there. Our business now is north." We were soldiers

its called "Sgt. McKenzie" it was written by Joseph Kilna as a tribute to his Grandfather who served in WW1
  13. The PIAT was a strange weapon, HE and smoke bombs were designed for it but i don't belive that they were ever issued. The Anti-Armour round relied on the "shaped charge" priciple to penetrate armour so i doubt it would be very effective at stopping infantry. The most famous "incident" involving the PIAT has to be choice between Fusiler Francis Jefferson, 2nd Battalion, Royal Lancashire Fusiliers: </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">On 16 May 1944 during an attack on the Gustav Line, Monte Casino, Italy, the leading company of Fusilier Jefferson's battalion had to dig in without protection. The enemy counter-attacked opening fire at short range, and Fusilier Jefferson, on his own initiative, seized a P.I.A.T. gun and, running forward under a hail of bullets, fired on the leading tank. It burst into flames and all the crew were killed. The fusilier then reloaded and went towards the second tank which withdrew before he could get within range. By this time our own tanks had arrived and the enemy counter-attack was smashed.<span id='postcolor'> There was some consensus that Fusilier Jefferson deserved the VC for firing a PIAT from the hip, let alone destroying the tank. Or Sergeant Thorton, D Company Ox and Bucks Light Infantry and his "most important shot of D-Day" knocking out a Panzer IV that stopped the lead elements of 21 Panzer Div at Pegasus Bridge, and kept the invasion beaches clear of enemy armour.
  14. Very nice The models are superb. and the uniforms etc. look spot on at first sight. The only problem i have had so far is the Bren Gun seems to have an untextured Muzzle flash. and the Lee-Enfield seems to take a little to long to reload (and it seems to have the garand reload "ping" sound?)

    Somalian soldiers?

I doubt it. these units are more of a generic "african militia" than a specific "Somalian" addon. (think the Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone etc.) and will also come with African Government Soldiers.

    Possible attack on heathrow

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">then why didnt they outfit most of them with lsws when going to fight at range and leave the sa80s for urrban conflicts ?<span id='postcolor'> Well, the other operational deployment (at the time) was the BAOR (British Army Of The Rhine) and that was mostly mechanized and armoured infantry. And one of the strengths of the sa-80 is that it is small and easy to handle in the "confines" of an APC. And the SA-80 is a good rifle at range, the British army marksmanship scores have gone up a great deal since it replaced the SLR.

    Possible attack on heathrow

I belive the idea was to have a whole "family" of weapons based on the SA-80 (like the AK-47 has), Carbine, Rifle, LSW .. but it never really happened. The primary "op" that drove the development of the LSW seems to have been Northern Ireland (where a hybrid MG/Sniper Rifle makes a great deal of sense) however, it does struggle to provide any sort of surpressing fire .. hence the British Army is trialing a number of LMGs
