    M109a(6) rl research questions

Yep. Great show that. The British Army hosted a live-fire "exercise" you could watch, basically a little battlegroup attack with arty (m109 and MLRS), airstrikes, tank fire and a Armoured infantry company attack. really something to see.

well Qinetiq were the ones who developed Chobham armour (back when they were DARPA) so i'd take anything they say pretty seriously....

    New small project.

Special Activities Division, as far as i am aware they are the section of the CIA that trains operatives in the use of explosives. I think he might mean the Special Activities Staff/Military Special Projects groups, they are the "covert ops" part of the CIA.

Indeed, the army isn't a "Royal" organisation like the Royal Navy or Royal Air Force, althought regiments within it can be.

    Sucked out of cargo plane

A Russian Airman Lt. I.M. Chisov whose Ilyushin IL-4 bomber was attacked by German fighters in January of 1942 fell nearly 22,000 feet, he hit the edge of a snow-covered ravine and rolled to the bottom. He was badly hurt but survived. Alan Magee, a gunner on a B-17 (aptly named Snap! Crackle! Pop! ) with the 303rd Bomb Group of the U.S. 8th Air Force, was on a mission to St. Nazaire, France in January of 1943, when his bomber was set aflame by enemy fire. He was thrown from the plane before he had a chance to put on his parachute. He fell 20,000 feet and crashed through the skylight of the St. Nazaire train station. His arm was badly injured, but he recovered from that and other injuries. In March of 1944, Nicholas Alkemade was the tail gunner in a British Lancaster bomber on a night mission to Berlin when his plane was attacked by German fighters. When the captain ordered the crew to bail out, Alkemade looked back into the plane and discovered that his parachute was in flames. He chose to jump without a parachute rather than to stay in the burning plane. He fell 18,000 feet, landing in trees, underbrush, and drifted snow. He twisted his knee and had some cuts, but was otherwise alright. And the highest ever was Vesna Vulovic was a stewardess on a Yugoslav DC 9 jet airliner that blew up in January of 1972 (probably as the result of a terrorist bomb). She fell more than 33,000 feet in the wreckage of the plane, which hit a snow-covered slope. The only survivor, she was badly injured and was paralyzed from the waist down, but later recovered and now can walk. (mostly fromhere)

97 held hostage on oil rigs

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Dozens of British and American oil workers are being held hostage on four rigs off Nigeria's coast by local colleagues in a bizarre drama which has been kept secret for 12 days, it emerged yesterday. Several captives have allegedly been put in containers and dangled by cranes over the sea and others threatened with death in an apparent attempt by striking Nigerian workers to intimidate managers. At least 35 Britons and 21 Americans are among the 97 expatriates trapped since a labour dispute flared into insurrection on April 19. <span id='postcolor'> Sounds like a bad situation, seeing as Nigeria is a member of the commonwealth, and the Royal Marines do have a specialist unit for operating on oil rigs in the Commachio Group (i belive SEAL Team 6 also has this sort of capability) if it does come to a storming i hope the let the professionals sort it....

    Who are the green berets?

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">The US has 42,000 soldier's in it's special forces. This includes the groups like the Rangers and Green Berets as well as Delta and Seals. The American policy is more orientated towards "if we call our soldiers 'special' then they will fight better with inflamed egos" and it works. The Royal Marines however are told to do the job to the best of their ability and live up to their reputation, their training is equal to that of the US Navy Seals and their physical fitness is superb, that's why the majority of the SAS is made up of former Marines. <span id='postcolor'> Now thats a little unfair, i'm a Brit myself and think that the SAS/SBS (plus those "specialist" SF units you just don't hear about, 14 Int, the FRU etc.) provide probably the best "counter-insergency" capability in the world, together with a fine battlefield support/recce/raiding capacity. especially given the small size of the units concerned. As impressive as the Royal Marines are, i wouldn't say they have quite the range of range of capabilities of the SEAL teams, and of course you can't forget the RMs do have their own  "special forces" in the shape of 3. Commando Brigade's "Brigade Patrol Troop" (In the same way that 16AA have the "Pathfinder Platoon") and the Comacchio Group. I think many Marines would also treat with some sceptism the remark that </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">the majority of the SAS is made up of former Marines.<span id='postcolor'> with some sceptisim; Broadly speaking, the SBS recruit from the Marines and Navy (you cannot join the SBS without passing the RM Commando Course) and the SAS from the Army (Often the Parachute Regiment and the "light" infantry formations) and Air Force (usually the air force forward Air Controllers). The unofical "Division of Labour" between the two tends to see the SBS tasked with missions that do directly relate to the security of the United Kingdom, and the SAS more commonley operate in support of UK Interest abroad. Its a little unfair to dismiss the US Special Forces quite so quickly, they have developed an impressive unconventional warfare capacity, as the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan show. There is a deal of the "if we call our soldiers 'special' then they will fight better with inflamed egos" syndrome among the US Light Infantry formations and Rangers, but the "actual" Special Forces units are an impressive formation, especially given the size of the units involved.

  22. Its that missing cargo proxy that bugs me, there are 7 seats, but you can only fit 6 guys in, that means you can't build missions based on the real composition of a mech inf unit.

    The Iraq Thread

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">From local experience, the routines at roadblocks, checkpoints and at makeshift camps concerning car bombs and suicide bombers are not the same as that at established bases with a different perimeter of roads, barriers and fences. It's not basic, IMO. It's also not something basic in the psyche of coalition soldiers. <span id='postcolor'> While not exactly an identical situation, the British soldiers will have quite substantial experience of these types of operation (operating vehicle check points and the like) from deployments in Northern Ireland (and the Royal Marines and Paras have both operated in areas that could be descibed as openly hostile to the British Army, Armagh being the post obvious). and while suicide bombers weren't something they had to contend with there i'd imagine many of the same procedures etc. are aplicable. It seems that these skills are going to be more and more valuble as the campaign continues.

A question to bas addon studio

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Could some of you folks on all of these teams give us an idea how you've been cooperating between the teams? Have there been clear advantages? How are you managing the cooperation or is it easier than originally thought?<span id='postcolor'> Well, the biggest help so far has been with "tech support" and expertise there has been a good deal of assistance in some of the trickier aspects of addon making, its good to have all that experience to help us out. Also BAS host our Website and provide a discussion forum. There isn't a lot of "crossover" as far as the addons themselves are concerned (in fact only one item so far).
