"The realism in game can save your ass IRL?"Oh, how? Please explain.
This always interests me, the supposed parallels between Arma2 and real life. I don't see any. If I had, in real life to press 8, 1, 1 to get my team to return to formation, I think I would shoot myself, far less rely on the enemy to do it.
Can anyone fill me in on what commonality exists between army doctrine and Arma2?
Because used properly with proper scenarios, it can teach you signs to look out for in a battlefield, along with teaching you to not do stupid things. Why do you think militaries use products such as VBS 2 and Steel Beasts Pro/Pro PE. It's because they help reinforce how to properly move and work in a unit.
It would be fun to know peoples age on this forum, i can only speak for myself and im closing (fast) 40.I have been playing games since the 80s and all the new "blockbuster" games nowdays feels like "been there done that".
Upp until the late 90s it felt like games was progressing and evolving but then suddenly stopped, it was like a new generation gamers came and the gaming industry started over again only with prettier graphics.
I have always liked simulations and seen the progress they have made. There are still some developed thanks to BI and others but many has fallen for the temptation of bigger profits in the "mainstrem" sector. The sims today are very complex and come as a shock to a "mainstreem" gamer but to people like me they are simply an advancement of the genre.
What i dont understand is why some people are so singleminded that they want every new game to be exactly like the one before.
OP of this thread seems to be questioning why Arma2 isnt more like Bf2 or Cod4 when the only resemblence is that it contains soldiers and tanks. Same thing with people that are playing Nfs or Grid are complaining over the Gtr series or Rfactor for being "slow" or to hard. All games doesnt need to be for everybody.
The gamingindustry today are only interrested in sales and what sales is pretty graphics sadly (not that i dont like pretty graphics but you know what i mean).
Exactly...
Oh and just to help your first question out, I'm 19...

Herbal! :DI encountered situations in Coop Multiplayer which can only be called "strange coincidence of real AI foxyness". Once I basically wiped out an entire town but couldnt find the last soldier for a trigger to work. So I got back into my jeep standing in the middle of the road to drive to the next hill and get a better overview.
But the soldier I had been looking for had basically crawled up from behind nearly onto under my car. When I drove off he killed me from behind.
I wonder which strange command told him not to fire untill I drove off.
I think it was the Skynet command.
I've seen some good stuff too, for instance the AI had flanked me plenty of times, and I've seen them using cover too. I've also noticed that in the campaign, Razor squad is a team of idiots. Who gets told to take cover in a bunker, and then stands outside it during a firefight.

there are people talking behind me, is that unrealistic to hear that IRL?
-
they add this kind of realism because there ARE people out there that want this kind of sim.
This game is the opposite of BF2 as far as gameplay. BF2 is more of a run and gun rambo fest, this is a tactical teamwork shooter. You may survive for a few minutes as a rambo in this, but not much longer than that. I pray you don't try any of the DCS series with that kind of attitude. You'd probably throw that disc out the window when you find out the manual for flying the thing is 383ish pages. ArmA is designed for realism, not run and gun. If you want run and gun, I hear Battlefield Bad Company 2 is coming to PC, I also hear Modern Warfare 2 is due out soon, try those. I strongly suggest though that you try arma 2 multiplayer a bit more with a more realism orientated community. When I got ArmA 1, I was put off a bit by the realism, then I joined at the time IC-ArmA, now called Charlie Foxtrot, and I grew to love ArmA. ArmA is a big change from BF2, but it's not something you can't do. If you want to try your hand at it, hit me up on xfire, my xfire is usmflyboy, and I'll gladly show you the ropes and help you out. I am more than willing to try to show you a bit about how to properly fight in ArmA, and there are many out there like me. The key is to have friends to help you learn the game, not doing it on your own. BIS has never really excelled at Single Player except in OFP and OFP:R. The multiplayer community is the saving grace along with the addon community. I'll gladly try to show you a bit about how to play with a team, and you may even grow to like a different style of play.
"..am joining" and "have served in" are two completely different things. When you've been at your permanent duty station or on deployment for a few months, you won't wonder why some of us want realism.I'm a Civvie and I can explain that one, because sometimes the realism in game can save your ass IRL.

OK I found a new glitch. Apparently, with at least some vehicles, if they are damaged, and you are a medic, you can hit "heal (insert vehicle name here)" as if you were healing a vehicle like infantry. When you hit this, your game will CTD. It freezes, stops responding, and you have to hit the close program button from the windows error window that pops up.

Title says it all, the BTR 90 and BMP3 have opaque windows in the drivers seat. I have no idea why this is, but it only seems to happen in these two vehicles.

I've noticed that the launchers don't have one. I thought that they were pretty powerful and could hurt people standing behind them. Am I incorrect here? I'm not as knowledgeable with weaponry as most of you guys here are.back blast can hurt/kill anyone caught in it. So can standing next to a tank firing. If nothing else wait for ACE 2.

Battles run for 3 hours. For the time being we are sticking to Sunday, more discussions are needed to determine the best day and time for the tournament. This isn't written in stone, so change to Saturday is possible, but will most likely change after the CF:B campaign.
I would actually suggest that, as right now having them both on Sunday at that time period would cause some major split between the community. Some people would want to play at both ATOW and CF, and if they overlap the way they seem to right now, well that isn't going to end well for the community as a whole. It will just become a race between ATOW and CF to get more players, rather than them being able to be played side-by-side by the same people without interference. I would gladly come back to IC/CF if it wasn't interfering with ATOW, and I know of others who feel the same way.

I think Austin Meyer of X-Plane said it best in an interview when he said that when things are just bolted on and not refactored every chance possible to something better or even deleted, you just get a mess. The best bet is to make a whole new engine for ArmA 3. Throw out the old, in with the new. Just completely change the game. The code to me sounds like it is probably over 50000 lines of bolted on stuff. The problem with that is that if you don't cut and replace code, you just get limited by old restrictions. FSX was a horrible preforming mess because of this, and it appears ArmA 2 is having the same issues FSX is. You might want to take the idea of just doing a total overhaul or better yet, a completely new engine, rather than just building off the old engine. That would most likely end a lot of issues. If you just bolt things on, you just get a bloated mess. Sometimes you need to trash the old for a whole new approach. In this case, I think that the engine is not doing good because it is still trying to support ArmA 1 addons. Because of ArmA 1 trying to support OFP, that could easily be causing excessive bloating by killing performance while trying to keep old content.
If you ask me, ArmA 3 needs a completely new engine, or a total overhaul of the current one. The current one seems like it's just the OFP CWC engine with stuff bolted on.

I have only one key question, what time is the actual tournament gameplay going to be. I might join up if it doesn't conflict with ATOW, but if it does, sorry, can't do that....
-
ArmA 2 won't be supported fully until they fix some issues. The issue I suspect which I have already reported to Xfire is that the ingame for vista uses a different D3D9 header and library. Because of this, it doesn't work right at least under vista. If it's screwy under XP, I have no clue why. I'm hoping they contact Valve and ask them about how they got the steam overlay working with A2.
As for no boxed support, xfire wont support boxed until it's in their local shop, and their in the US. Until then, they won't support it.

This is something major I would like to see in A2, is the ability to use axises for control, along with analog throttle. Last thing I want to do is to turn into a fence because it doesn't work properly with my racing wheel.

If you do buy ArmA 1, just get the gold pack. You can pick it up cheap off amazon or ebay.

Dark, the island videos are still there, just the carrier stuff is there first in the menu...

Hey, I got a weird glitch while playing Dom on the ATOW server. I was in a helicopter, and the heli got damaged. I was a medic, and i jumped out of the helicopter, and I got the heal icon. Turns out the heal icon was for "Heal MH-60S" and I said OK... and I hit heal, and it CTDed.

Hello, If you are looking for a tournament to join that emphasises balance and having a mod that works with minimal lag or errors, may I suggest ATOW. ATOW is a tournament that takes place on sundays, at 1700 GMT. The tournament is preparing for Campaign 4, our first campaign with ArmA 2. As such, we are currently planning out the format. Until then, you are more than welcome to join our community at www.arma-tow.com and chill with us until the tournament starts. If you like what you see with how we operate, feel free to join up full on. We play PVP campaigns on a two tour setup for control over points on the map. As time progresses, we gain resources from those points, which allows us to buy vehicles. Each piece of gear costs resources, and as such, they won't respawn after dying unless bought again. The team at the end of the two tours with the most resource points wins.
Here's a few videos showing some of our ArmA 1 antics....

Well, Is it possible to use the ACM and have the first aid modules link to that, so that the AI spawned in the ACM uses the first aid modules?
For that matter, is it possible to link the civilian module, with the first aid module.
Finally, would it be possible to make the Warfare type missions or Evo or Dom type missions use the First Aid on the AI that's generated.

It's great, however whenever you look at the orange trees or a town, your frame rate gets slaughtered, even on a mid to high end card.
and Alimag, SP2 for vista is out... that should help some...

Please for the love of god allow us to use our cd keys to get a steam copy...

whats sad is that i would trade any sexual reference in arma, or any videogame for that matter, for just one functional ch-53, with slingload capabilities. :cool:hell ya!
-
uhh did you clear those images with the mods? If not you may be violating some forum rules...
-
hello allWell this thread has made me think long and hard.
Seriously though, I dont think one needs explicit imagery to convey a thing/idea/concept.
The first mission of the campaign deals with mass murder and rape/abuse.
One doesn't have to see it in all its gory detail.
So, in answer, yes these things can be implemented.
Nudity? certainly with some modelling/skinning/scripting knowledge.
Would you want to bother? IMHO, no, the work involved would outweigh it's popularity/use.
There was only ever one mission I remember from arma that had a female reporter as a "damsel in distress" and no-one really cared one way or the other whether we would be rescuing her or blowing an ammo dump.
Now, as to truly representing the horrors of war, from civilian to combat issues, i certainly would welcome these, though i'm at a loss how they would be effectively enabled as most effects are long term issues.
And if they were enabled with enough force to have an effect on the player, i doubt we'd want to play a game that could result in PTS.
Realistcally, moral choices could be used as could gore / wounding to a lesser degree.
Perhaps a thing for the ACE modders is to look at fear/shock effects and implement a Post process effect for adrenalin rushes etc?
I know after I fight I get the shakes something rotten, no aiming for me...
Finally, sex/nudity/drugs/nastyness/love/bunnies/flowers, yeah, implement them all, but use them in context of a narrative not just for shock and awe value.

This would be acceptable up to a point, say in a campaign where a character falls in love, etc. etc. Other than that, I don't see any need at all.

check out the f-16 for arma 2... I know it has vapor trails, not sure about contrails though.
