    [SP] Pilgrimage

Quick shout-out to you Rydygier, putting out a coop version is absolutely mega-awesome! I'm trying to engage fellow players and once I do I'm happy to spend all my time testing for your coop Pilgrimage - that's basically all I need from Arma at the moment :)

So. bit of further feedback from me. I've come to realize that there is no re-calibration needed. I just need to upload the sketch, and then start the FTNoIR tracker within a certain time window, and then it will work from there, just as well calibrated as it was the last time I played. And it's really stable. And even though I have a low-end rig (we're talking a Q6600 here...) the tracking is as fluid as the game itself and works beautifully. Once or twice, I've had to change the 'invert Y axis' after uploading and starting a game for some reason, but that's really a minor nuisance. I only track X and Y pitch axes. So for me, this has become a necessary part of playing Arma. And I love it. Anybody needs help with the Pro Micro / GY-85 combo I'm happy to respond (if you post here please combine with a PM) to the best of my knowledge.

Posting my experience of a GY-85 build (after trying an MPU6050, seeing its great potential but too much drift so wanted to take the next step): Bit of a hassle regarding drivers and installation/calibration. I have the Sparkfun Pro Micro which required its own drivers, so be sure to find and install those first. The solution I went for was Sebastian's GY80facetrack which works with the Hatire plugin for FTNoIR (similarly to the MPU6050 as described in thread's start). For the GY-85, this currently means that you have to upload one sketch and then run a Calibration GUI to do a calibration, and then upload another sketch to provide output to FTNoIR (sketches look almost identical, but they haven't yet been able to sort out how a single sketch should look to work for both calibration and running). NOTE to potential users: I had to do a lot of trial and error before I found that the Pro Micro would stop outputting data about three seconds after "running sketch" upload, and if I start FTNoIR tracking within this time window, it will keep running - but if FTNoIR tracking is not started, it will time out for some reason and no data will be sent. A re-upload will have to be done. I also haven't been able to interpret the Calibration GUI's output and decide there whether it's ok to run FTNoIR - it's still trial and error for me here. This wouldn't be too bad if calibration was done once and for all. But unfortunately, I've had to re-calibrate for every session (after putting the computer to sleep), and even then, the output from FTNoIR to the game is very erratic - sometimes it works, most times it doesn't. Whether it's the Pro Micro that sends weird stuff out, or if it's Hatire that is buggy, I don't know. The results are that tracking output often seems somewhat random - roll axis will be active even though it's deactivated and receives no input from the board, axes will be mixed up, and so on and so on. It's just back and re-do parts or whole of the calibration procedure. However. When it works, which it sometimes does, it works beautifully!! Really! It's very precise and there is no trace of the drift that was very present with the MPU6050. So, a lot of promise here. To go mainstream, we have to sort out the buggy behavior though (anyone that would like to help me with ideas on how to get good diagnostic output is welcome to PM me!). Only currently recommended to those with large amounts of patience (and who are seldom on a tight deadline to join a MP game, for example).
  5. Agreed. I like what I see, but what I expected was also that turning with a machinegun would be slower than with an SMG. This, I think, is important to balance CQB especially in urban terrain.

That seems like a very good idea! FTNoIR supports two simultaneous input sources it seems but I've never seen it used, I guess it would usually be one source for Pan/Tilt/Rot gyro and another for XYZ positioning. If the other source is to be used for the same thing FTNoIR would have to be written to support that, or there would have to be specific drivers that could take input from two sources. I suppose. Which makes me doubt it will be done (but hey, I have been known to be wrong before...)

    Zeus Feature Request Thread

Would it be possible to add a "pause game" option for Zeus to use? I intend to have Arma/Zeus as a backdrop for roleplaying gaming, so the pause thing would be a nice option to have (and not too terribly difficult to implement, I assume). And for those who do not want to use it, ever - it's easy not to click a button or choose a menu item.

    [SP] Pilgrimage

Hello Rydygier, a question (sorry if it's been asked before, searched thread and could not find): When I had loaded the body into a vehicle and made for the boat, I had my wheels shot out from under me, and then there was no way (at least that I could find) that I could move the body from one vehicle to another. So kind of game over there. Not the biggest thing, just one fine adjustment to this great adventure! (at this time, I have more playtime on Pilgrimage than on all other Arma III combined...)

Very nice. Ordered a GY-85 now, hope this works better than the MPU-6050 (which was a good prototype, but the drift is too disturbing for long actual use).

    [SP] Pilgrimage

I can only agree. Fabulous work. The amount of time I've spent in Pilgrimage is now above what I've spent playing all other Arma 3. If you'd be able to team up with someone who can make it MP (and doable in shorter sittings, maybe, or keeping some campaign data between sessions) you'd have my vote for Make Arma not War.

You probably found out already but usually the cables that come with smartphones are for both charging and data, since you are supposed to be able to also connect the phone to your PC and transfer stuff. So yes, that should work fine in most cases.

I get drift sometimes. I also get strange effects, like suddenly pitch is inverted in Arma (and I have to alt-tab and check or uncheck 'invert pitch', depending on how it was set, to get it right again). And sometimes I get roll although that axis is disabled in the Hatire. So maybe that driver still has some way to go. That said, if I get the drift, I put my headset down and upload the sketch again. And it's good to go again, no more drift. Can't say if the strange stuff appears due to me putting the computer to sleep and waking it? Need to test further. Anyway, when it works, it works really well. So cool! The rest is up to me to learn to use it ingame :)

That's too bad. The GY80 seems competent, which sketch are you using? Are you trying to use other than the gyro? Wiring should be something like this for gyro functionality I suppose? You really should try to re-wire the MPU6050 to the Arduino board using shorter wires and run a longer USB cable instead.

Sigh. The Arduino drivers won't install for me with my Chinese Pro Micro board. Probably a dud? Tried both 64 bit and 32 bit Windows 7 to be sure. Edit: actually, it worked, I just used the wrong drivers. Had to get Sparkfun drivers from here (it wasn't that obvious to me...) FaceTrack is a go, now on to configuration... Ok, some questions on that: - I get it to work pretty well in infantry mode; i have only yaw and pitch enabled (i.e. look left/right and up/down). - When I jump into a heli or plane, it's all up in the air (yeah); head roll is suddenly a go, and sensitivity is waay up. Why?? Dev branch thingy? - I must be stupid, but I can't get the 'center' key to bite while in Arma. Is there a setting somewhere that I need to make it 'global'?

    Manual Bombing

Wow, thanks! Just trying out the CAS showcase and am not very successful with my bombing runs :) Good to see an expert doing it!
  16. Some good tips there, thanks.
  17. I feel like a complete noob, but I can't seem to find a way to turn the compass (and presumably, my avatar) while in map mode... I see it happen all the time in ShackTac videos and it sure would be a convenient way to get compass directions from the map.

Turn compass while in map mode

OK so with ACE for Arma 2 I'd be able to do the same thing. I'll try that. Thanks!
  19. Yeah, because computer performance haven't stepped up very much since e.g. Arma 2 was released in 2009, and nobody plays THAT game anymore :) Sorry, you're probably new to the series. You'll see that you're still gonna play this game when you've upgraded your rig twice or more. By then you will ask why BIS was stupid enough to limit the viewdistance to 12000 m...

    User Mission Request Thread

I'm wondering if there are any good missions set in the A3MP islands? The only one I've found so far is Assault on Zargabad. More tips would be very welcome!

    [SP] Pilgrimage

Cool scenario idea, it will take a while to play for sure but I'll keep chugging away now and then - it's definitely exudes an air of it's own. Well done, keep up the good job! Edit: Oops, my saved game got flunked (when I tried resume I got thrown back to the main menu), probably b/c being in dev branch. Better wait to play this til I decide to stay on stable for a while.

    AI Discussion (dev branch)

Nice demonstration! Sounds true to me, I'm sad too. And given the state of these forums, there won't be much chances of refactoring/overhaul since if a single little tiny detail breaks in the overhaul a good number of people will explode with rage and whine about in every thread (regardless of subject) on this tiny detail, so incredibly important to their view of the game. By behaving like that, we encourage the developers to patch the patches of patches and continue building technical debt. Let's hope that the above issue demonstrated by Akibuua-FIN- has some good refactoring coming about, though. I remember a cool picture from OFP days showing how AI evaluated their environment (threat levels visualized in 3D with arrows and staples). I think that the refactoring needs to go back to something similar, using a few simple parameters - I can imagine the current state of AI threat evaluation is impossible to visualize due to too many parameters and complexity. Edit: On the other hand - in this thread there are examples of problems of old (pre-arma2) that pop up again, so maybe that's exactly what they're doing... Feel free to pitch in, BIS :)

Pretty cool, $12 for no-name board in august 2012, and we just ordered ours for $3 incl. shipping :) It would seem to me that this is superior to TrackIR where you have to have two pieces of hardware (granted, having a passive headmount part like TrackIR does is somewhat nicer, on the other hand most of us are using wired headphones anyway, so...). Or can you find a use case where the TrackIR is vastly better for gaming? Maybe TrackIR themselves will build one of these (wireless, then) and sell it for $50 (and bundling their great configuration software), undercutting their $150 camera solution. Or someone else will. Perhaps all high-end headsets will have these integrated within a year.

OP what a great project - thanks a lot for sharing! I did get decent results from facetracking with a PS3 cam and FaceTrackNoIR (I actually ran the camera with my laptop and then set up a FaceTrackNoIR client on my main rig, just getting tracking data from the laptop - to leave all CPU power to Arma - this particular part worked excellently). But facetracking did not really cut it in the end, I was not able to have consistently good lighting. Bought IR LEDs to build something but never got around to it. I think I'll try this instead.
