Helis on Film (Real Footage) Please post your real chopper footage in here.
sbsmac replied to max power's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - GENERAL
Interesting shot showing the control inputs the pilot has to make just after the 2.00 mark -
Actually it's even simple than that... 1) Open the editor on the map you want 2) Double click on the map to insert a unit (the default will be a helicopter already) 3) Change the helicoptor Class to 'light' or 'medium' if you prefer not to fly the heavy 4) Change the State to 'Flying' 5) Press 'Ok' 6) Press the 'Play' icon (or just hit the return key) You should find yourself in a helicopter and flying

Somewhat reassuring to see that this happens to RL pilots as well ;-) CUtyUTLeW1g -
Take On Helicopters Beta Patch 89942
sbsmac replied to DnA's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - BETA PATCH TESTING
WRT cockpit flickering, see spoiler for profile, cfg and system settings... Once thing worth pointing out - I don't emember any flickering from patch 1.03 (or if it was there it was rare enough that I didn't notice it) so this appears to be an effect that was made worse during the beta tweaking. Tweaking with the graphics settings doesn't seem to do much to affect it either. -

Likewise. Seems to happen all over Seattle - particularly in the downtown area. -

I have the same problem with the disappearing cockpit. It was present in the previous beta as well. You may also notice the scenery disappear from time to time. -
Take On Helicopters Beta Patch 89707
sbsmac replied to DnA's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - BETA PATCH TESTING
Hmm, just tried this after playing the 1.03 patch heavily for the last few days. First impressions.... Light helicopter is now much less controllable. There seems to be a lot more inertia on the pitch moment - ie when hovering if you start to pitch forward it can be very difficult to pull back. Ground-effect is very noticable. Whereas I used to be able to fly comfortably a meter above the sea the heli now seems to want to rise much higher than this and has to be actively forced down. I'll leave it to others to comment on whether these changes are actually more realistic - it's certainly causing me to relearn how to fly after getting pretty comfortable with 1.03. ;-) On a more annoying issue, graphics glitches are much worse with the beta. The cockpit flickers in and out of existence for me on regular basis now (at least once per minute) and sometimes the entire world outside the cockpit disappears for a few frames. :-( -
There's a similar issue with the mission where you have to replace the tower on top of the space needle. If you are manage to collide with the tower the mission will decide you've managed to pick up the tower and trigger the auto-save but this occurs just after collision detection has decided that you've damaged your cargo beyond repair. You therefore end up with an autosave which immediately ends the game due to damaged cargo.

Awesome cockpit ergonomics - 'Engine Off' right next to 'increase power' !

Broadcasting a variable to server only, without broadcasting to all clients
sbsmac replied to eddieck's topic in ARMA 2 & OA : MISSIONS - Editing & Scripting
I'll take issue with the idea that its not necessary or desirable. In the scenario described above network traffic from the server probably ends up being O(n^2) since every client reports changes and each of these changes is then broadcast to every client. -
Wow ! The bit just after around 2:29 is rather cool as well :)

Flight Dynamics Feedback From Real Helicopter Pilots
sbsmac replied to RUBIX's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - COMMUNITY PREVIEW
FWIW, as a non-pilot (apart from a single 45 minute introductory lesson in an R440 I'm also very keen that the FM should be as accurate a representation of the real thing as possible. -

Temporary new version available from http://homepage.ntlworld.com/n.macmullen/projects/squint/bin/setup.exe You may need to remove the old version first using add/remove programs. Apologies for the inconvenience - I'm working on a new version with updated UI and more features but it may be a while yet... -

IMPORTANT - squint is currently offline This is due to armaleague.com being suspended. I'm trying to find out whether this is a permanent state of affairs, if so I'll sort out an alternative home in the next few days. Apologies for the inconvenience. -

Very nice - thumbs up on the voice acting as well which seems to be a huge improvement over earlier games. -
Guess it's too late to get this in the game ? ;-) http://www.gizmag.com/first-successful-manned-electric-helicopter-flight/19716/ http://www.gizmag.com/first-successful-manned-electric-helicopter-flight/19716/picture/141538/ Whilst I'm wishing for things, a gyrocopter would be nice as well ! 058NelwSkkw

Thanks kju. It'll take a little while until I can get the project in a state where other people can usefully contribute but just to show you that changes are coming, here is a new prototype UI based on the excellent AvalonDock and AvalonEdit components.... None of the backend error checking is wired up yet nor are any real editor functions implemented but this gives an idea of the direction I'm going in -

Agreed. Personally I prefer the dubstep but I like the overall direction you're going in with music :) -
The problem with this in a 'dynamic' world like ToH is that it's very difficult to ensure that the simulation plays out the same way during the replay. You can't just start things off with the same initial conditions and hope that it all works out the same as when you played it - much of the simuation may depend subtly on frame-rate or uncontrolled input such as free-running scripts. So... the only sensible approach is to record the entire state of the world at periodic intervals and put the engine in a mode where it's simply moving objects around dumbly (as well as doing other stuff like replaying the weather, cloud-formations, etc and doing small-scale simulations like particle effects for explosions). BIA do something a bit like this for VBS2 with their "After-Action Replay" system but this is aimed at analysis and I've know idea whether it allows you to use a 'virtual camera' to view the replay with visual fidelity. Some of the missions in ArmA2 also use a similar approach for cutscenes where they playback the pre-captured track of a vehicle such as a helicopter. (Off the top of my head I can't remember the name of the command to do this). Anyway, all of which is to say that this is not necessarily as straightforward as you might think! Nevertheless, I'd really like it, even if it wasn't perfect.

Error rules are written in C# and require a knowledge of the squint DOM which I've yet to document ;) The closest model to what they will look like is the existing mac.arma configvisitor class at http://www.armaleague.com/mac/Mac_arma/html/class_mac_1_1_arma_1_1_config_1_1_config_visitor.html Here's a slightly fictional example of what rules might end up looking like... /* Check for incorrect checks such as "_a == objnull" which should be rewritten as "isNull _a" */ public class CheckObjNullComparison : SqfRule { public override void VisitOperatorExpression(Expression parent, OperatorExpression current) { if (current.OneOf(new {"objnull","controlnull","displaynull","grpnull","locationnull"}) { var assign = parent as OperatorExpression; if (assign !=null && assign.OneOf(new {"==","!="})) { ParseError err = Parser.Warn("Comparison with '" + op.CasedName + "' will always fail - use isNull instead", assign); if (assign.LHS != null) { var neg = ""; if (assign.Op == "!=") neg = "!"; err.AddAction(ErrorActionType.Replace, neg + "isNull " + assign.LHS.Text); } } } base.VisitOperatorExpression(parent, current); } } -

<cough> Been away from this for a bit but thanks for all the input. No promises but I'll look into doing the fixes. Is anyone out there interested in helping out with this project ? Anything from documentation to coding (particularly UI and error-rules) ...
