for macro shots like those I would go lower on the ISO if I could, but my camera only goes down to 200. However, I think it does quite well at that ISO. F-Number is the aperture - see here for an interactive explanation: Shutter speed and aperture also see Film speed and Reducing camera shake BTW congrats on the D40! I'm actually on my way to the store now to exchange my open  box unit for a brand new one - I found last night while shooting long exposure night shots from my balcony that there are a couple of huge dust bunnies on the sensor!  . Hope there's some left. Website says there are some left in my local store but only 14 in all of e'm. *edit* After freezing my ass off (windchill must be around -30) I'm back with a brand new K110D - maybe the last one in the store - the clerk had to really dig to find it. Works out in a way, seems the open box camera had a few items missing (lens hood, lens manual, warranty papers!  ). Plus I decided to invest in a good camera bag. The K110D looks even more beautiful now with the lens hood attached Good to hear you are having fun mate! Looking forward to seeing more of your work with the new camera @Albert: All that theory is good and you really should read it. How I imagine it in my mind is this, The F-number is a sort of band around your point of focus. Inside this band items will be sharp, outside this band they will not be sharp. Now at F1 (no lens on earth does that I believe) this band will be extremely small, this will help blur out background in portraits. At F22 this band will be HUGE! Almost everthing will be in focus. Now you'd say why not leave the thing in F22 then? Well the larger the band of focus the more light you need. So if you shoot at F22 you're shutterspeed will become really long. You can use your lens like that but you need to use a tripod. For a action photograph on a sunny day I'd go with F8. Offcourse you can use the F number to trade focuswidth for a faster shutter time or vice versa.

    Save the Red Arrows!

Not sure I would go for that, but my reasons would be political, as imho the government are starving the MoD as a whole of money but expecting them to fight more? Seems a rather retarded approach to me. I think that's what's happening world wide man Same with the dutch airforce. Budget cuts, stupid rules because the morons from the navy cant behave after 2 beers, less flying, more deployments to afghanistan, worse carreer prospects for non flying personell. And then they are amazed they are losing pilots to the airlines at a alarming rate and noone wants to join anymore.

meh I've never kept an image that was shot at over 200ISO :S Can't say your camera does much better then mine at high ISO numbers though. I don't like human and action photography in low light much though, I love working with tripods etc. My most wanted improvement for canon's next new camera is a 48 ISO setting.

1499 euro's left to go? You might save money on a cheaper lens but if 90% of your pictures can go straight into the bin because of it its a bit naff. The troubles Sole descrides remind me of my old lens big time. Super bad autofocus though the term auto-f*ckus which a pilot buddy of mine invented is more accurate.

*hits shadow with his magnesium bodied 20D* Â One problem with Canon is that the lenses can be hard to get as demand always outstrips supply for some reason. Lot's of companies make lenses for these camera's. Companies like Sigma makes lenses for them both for instance. Sole and Deadmeat both have a Sigma 70something-300 on their camera's and they seem pretty chuffed with it I have had some bad experiences with Sigma lenses, on had VERY poor focus at the extremes of its range and seeing as I do a lot of aviation photography I need a long focal length lens. Then I bought the 100-400 L IS USM from canon which is a world of difference! I am never buying a non canon lens again.

Hi Albert and welcome to "the club", though there really isnt any I don't mind adding the info if you want to know Also feel free to ask questions here or in PM. I don't know much about Nikon's as I am a Canon user myself but guys like goob and Killagee can probably answer any questions you have about camera specific things. I don't know about Pentax, I know they made good film camera's. One problem I foresee though is that you are investing in a platform that might have very little growth potential. The advantage with either Canon or Nikon is that accesories like lenses you buy for use with an entry model will also still be of use with a higher end camera of the same brand. If pentax makes more advanced camera's and the quality is good then go for it but I'd take the growth issue in mind

Use manual focus and a high aperture level, don't trust autofocus! And 50% of my shots still arent perfectly focussed The last shot was shot at 30 seconds to get the 350D's noise reduction to kick in.

    The Iraq thread 4

We may not be fighter pilots experienced with CAS duties but some of us are or were among the ones walking under the skies those are flying in. You might understand the concern some ground troops have when heavily armed planes fly over their heads It's a fact that mistakes were made, deadly ones. Crucifying the pilot wont get the brit his life back. Besides, if this was anyones fuck up its the FAC who keeps telling the pilots there are no friendlies this far up north. Also the guy who made the decision these pilots (warthog pilot of all people) didnt need ground target recognition training might need a good going over. .

    The Iraq thread 4

Amazing how many of you suddenly turn out to be seasoned fighter pilot's with loads of experience flying CAS missions and ID-ing ground targets .... o wait ..... perhaps some of you should try taking some introductory flying lessons and then ID-ing ground vehicles by make and model from a mere 1500 feet let alone 10.000 feet. Even with EO sensors its a bitch.

    The Iraq thread 4

I saw the video a while back, it seems to me the FAC is to blame here. Multiple messages from the pilot indicate he isn't sure about the identity of the vehicles but he is told each time that there are "no friendlies this far north". He even mentions that they seem to have orange ID panels. I think this is a bad thing for all involved, the pilots seem quite distressed once they are told about their own mistakes, one of them appears to be crying even. Sad event for all involved. Hopefully in the future when systems like LINK32 becomes more comon place, with ground units too, these events should become less frequent.

    recharging batteries

I wish more devices had powercells that you can recharge from a USB port, my cellphone has one and its pbb the best idea ever. Takes a normal USB cable to recharge it so everyone has one of those around

at 1600 the noise levels are pbb complete crap so you will still have to use a tripod. Besides doing good night photography is a technicall challenge which I found very rewarding to overcome Nice picture btw!

Cool, thanks! Looks like noise levels are lower then the 350D. Noise reduction is mainly used for long exposures, longer then 30 seconds if you shoot on bulb. On the 350D Noise reduction only works for exposures longer then thirty seconds I believe. Still works that way?

China destroys satellite with ballistic missile

Ah the "havent slept in XX hours excuse" ... where have I heard that one before. Again though, the F-17 was a abject failure and never flew operationally, less then five airframes were ever built. It had to be extensively reworked to become the F/A-18 Hornet.

China destroys satellite with ballistic missile

Do you have any idea what a F-104 looks like? This machine in no way resembles a F-104 Starfighter. The wingplanform is different, the intake system is different, the cockpit placement is different. The Chinese may have learnt a lot rebuilding and modifying russian designs but their J-10 looks to be quite an apt fighter that borrows nothing from any foreign design. F-14 being replaced by F-22's? Well show's what you know, or rather how much you don't know. In case you hadn't notice the F-14 Tomcat was a carrier borne jet that flew for the NAVY. The F-22 is a land based fighter that flies for AIRFORCE. The Raptor (that's the F-22's nickname) will never fly operationally of a carrier. The F-17 you say? You are aware you are talking about the Cobra prototype that that compete unsuccesfully with the F-16 for a Airforce contract? Later on the Hornet was developed from this machine but only after extensive redesign. The B-2? Good that you mention this one, you should do some research about how good its stealth capabillity works after its been rained on. The F-117 ..... fun choice! You do know it is being withdrawn from service? You are not Legally obliged to say something so if you have no idea about Military aviation feel free to just say nothing.

    DEFCON: Everybody Dies

For the purposes of this game, Africa is a superpower. So is South America. Does anyone else feel like the AI Navy does not like to fight? I just wiped out Western Europe in a similar manner, and the whole time I came across (and sunk) only one of their subs. By the end of it there were only two cities left in Europe with a population of over 1 million (Krakow and barcelona), no military assets on land whatsoever, and there were still 45 unused enemy nukes somewhere in the ocean  Your probably just very good as a destroyer of worlds Tovarish! Perhaps there is a vacancy somewhere
