Say 5 of the leading rounds in the burst hit ERA; what do you think of the chances of those rounds clearing sufficient area of the surface for the other 25 to do their thing? Still amazing if some pilot puts 30 rounds in the same place. But ok, the first rounds will clear the reactive part away but there's still the bottom plate + tanks own armor to penetrate. Placing those shots from a moving aircraft into the same area, say 50cmx50cm is still a challenge for any pilot. Although I haven't flown an A-10 so I don't know how easy it is

    A-10 gatling gun: underpowered

You're right about hitting the tanks from the rear. I guess no MBT, including the M1A2, could withstand a long accurate burst from GAU-8. The other thing is how many rounds will hit one spot. Takes a really good pilot and optimal weather&position to spray the whole 1,5 sec burst to the target. Edit: some tuning

It was first deployed around 1985 on the first T-80Us. It is claimed that Kontakt-5 provides about 300 mm RHA equivalent of additional protection against APFSDS rounds, which corresponds to an increase of about 160% over the base armour of the T-80U (~720 mm total)." The inside of the tank is now 3000F. Yep, and you did not get my point. I ment that thge pulverized DU is dangerous to everybody, might be just friendly troops inhailing the harmful DU. You should try to find info on the DU round's health effects during Desert Storm. Kermit: I did read your post, then I got some info about the current situation of A-10s and they're scrapping it at the moment. It has been a really good plane but they (U.S. military) say it's too slow for modern combat environment. Not a word about the GAU, Guess they have a modernized equivalent to it by now. Edit2: About ERA and such RA. Actually they do offer extra protection against AP ammo not only against warheads. They have explosive material in but also the bottom plate is designed so that even after detonation the plate will give the tank extra armor protection. One more point to killing tanks with 6000 rounds of DU (as someone here said). The speed of the plane + altitude + angle of attack causes a lot of rounds to miss the target. So the target will not be hit by every round fired.

Face the facts. Go back and read that again. Â It said that most confirmed kills were made with Mavericks. Â It is probably a lot easier to confirm a kill made with a Maverick because of the explosion. Â The Avenger cannon may not always make such an explosion. As for that second statement, you haven't given any facts yet. Â Feel free to show me any U.S. Army documentation stating that the Avenger cannon cannot destroy modern tanks such as the T-80. Â Of course, they wouldn't tell us even if it couldn't, but the fact that they say that it regularly did and does is a good indication that it can. Even if it is as you say outdated, it would be able to destroy anything if it persisted. Â Why, if ammunition and time were not an issue, you could probably destroy a tank by firing even an M-16 into that frontal armor. Â No matter how hard the armor, a bullet will always leave some sort of mark. Â I don't want to know how many days and rounds that would take, though. However, you are still underestimating what you know nothing about, namely the Avenger cannon and its unique ammunition. Â It is not useless against modern tanks, or they would have scrapped it. Â And if it were made to destroy light vehicles, then why bother with something special life the Avenger? Â Tell me, would you really feel safe in a T-80 if there were an A-10 armed only with the Avenger cannon flying about you? In regard to Operation Flashpoint, the main problem is making the plane flyable, not making the gun realistic. Â Adding rudder and more lift would just about do the trick for now, I think. Hmm. Neither have you given sceptics any facts on the effectiveness of GAU8 against Modern tanks. How come you did not comment the issue about the angle of the ammuntion hitting the tank. Any modern MBT can take that pounding quite well, have you noticed T-80s have reactive armor on the top of turret also? I did not say GAU8 was ineffective against armor, of course old T-55 etc can't withstand the GAU8 due to the profile of the tank and armor thickness. And what comes to this "amazing" DU ammo, it's good but it has downsides as you may well know. When penetrating the armor it pulverizes and when the armor burns the pulverized DU can be easily inhailed by troops and crews. Have a nice blood cancer. Thanks for spreading 25 tons of those rounds into europe during the bosnia-hertzegovina crisis. I wouldn't want to be in A MBT in any case during combat, too much AT weapons not enough armor

    A-10 gatling gun: underpowered

Just want to make one point, due to the style of the strafe A-10 does, the rounds do not hit the tank's top in a straight angle but in a quite gradual angle. The angle changes the thickness of the armor as you all probably know. I'd love to see some videos where the A-10 does a stuka style dive attack with the GAU8 to penetrate the roof of a modern MBT. What is unclear in the report posted here earlier that stated : "Most of the kills were done with Mavericks." Maybe the GAU8 is good for killing APC and old tanks but not modern MBTs. Never seen any evidence on GAU8 tearing M1A2s, Leopards or T-80s into pieces. Take those stars n stripes-glasses off and face the facts.
  12. I'd love to see an island with chechnya like terrain and structure. One bigger city and small villages up in moountains. Most of the roads could be small mountain roads with hill overlooking them from both sides. Random sized woods and bigger "highways" going through the whole map. Is there anyone else who would like to see a chechnya campaign with the siege of grozny, omon road blocks getting raided with small groups, terrorist hunt from mountains and villages and of course, armored column ambushes in mountain roads. So if theres any wrp edit gurus out there, I'd be more than happy to help ya out in the map's geographical design.

No good recoil either. Nothing compared to a GRG (Carl Gustaf). Edit: I should perhaps add that I am talking about the real thing and not the Keg's addon Are you serious? Â I also fired the MK-19 and that was THE MOST AWESOME weapon system I have EVER fired. Â Of coarse it's not Carl Gustav, but then again they are entirely different weapon systems made for entirely different purposes. The MK-19 is primarily designed to kill lots of infantry and light armored (or unarmored) vehicles. Â The Carl Gustav is primarily a tank killer/bunker buster weapon. Â The Carl Gustav has to be manually reloaded one shot at a time. Â The MK-19 is a belt-fed automatic weapon that put the same equivelent amount of high explosives on an area with one burst as a single rocket from a Carl Gustav. Â I didn't care what sound it made. Â The important thing to me was the impressive damage that it created down range. Â It's like having a platoon of light mortars at your finger tips and is an absolutely devestating weapon against enemy infantry. Â I can not think of a single other weapon system that is more deadly against opposing infantry forces short of the AGS-17 or some type of AA auto-cannon. Â I also LOVE the fact that it is low noise and low recoil. Â I can't believe that you found these things to be defects in the weapon!!! Low noise = less chance of the enemy locating your firing position and less ear fatigue. Low recoil = greater chance that your rounds will fall on target with accuracy. Â Also it is less fatiguing on the gunner. Â On gun mounts on vehicles this also means less stress on the gun mount and the frame of the vehicle (or aircraft). Â All in all the MK-19 I think is one of the most remarkable weapon systems ever made. Â Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD> Yep, but I also think it's sort a lame weapon to fire IRL. Of course it is very deadly against infantry but when compared to even a LAW the automatic grenade launcher was somehow too "nice" Even the 12.7 AAMG felt more meaner. Jus my opinion though.

    Aircraft

And nobody mentions that U.S. have used DU rounds in europe. Nice, especially when you know that DU rounds are now in the soil. Oh well, it just causes blood cancer and is very harmful to children, no big deal That's the cause for so much protesting against DU rounds. U.S. soldiers in Desert Storm also got this syndrome, mostly caused by burning tanks destroyed with DU rounds. The DU round disintegrates into "dust" and in this way it can enter human lungs. That is the thing why (later in the war, when the risk was realized) U.S. soldiers were not allowed to enter or even stay close to destroyed armor.
