    An Honest Review

For the love of God, why? This is not Counter Strike. There's simply not that much going on in small scale pvp in Arma. Also, what are you talking about, easy mode AI? AI doesn't have an easy mode. You seem to be saying a lot of stuff without having any idea what you are talking about. A lot of realism units have some really dumb stuff going on, but it is rarely related to the mission. I'm pretty sure you have never played with a large group of people, because what you are saying does not seem to jive with what is actually going on in the community. If groups aren't playing pvp it's not because they are afraid of bad players realizing they are bad, since individual skill plays a fairly small part of almost any Arma encounter.
  2. I have to wait until next year for a news update? That's crazy! Edit: Someone seriously reported this post? Was it not clear that this was a joke?
  3. They've been doing much better with documentation recently, but for much of it's lifespan this series has been documented largely be the community. Much of the documentation on the BIKI was already available via things like the COMREF from that website that I don't remember the name of. There's also still a fair amount of stuff that is undocumented or partially documented.

    An Honest Review

Dice and Infinity Ward are not looking over their shoulders at BIS. Battlefield and Arma do not try to do the same things. They target a different market. We are not comparing BMWs to Audis, we are comparing boats to cars. The only things about Battlefield and Arma that are similar are that they are both first person shooters, and they both feature the military. Furthermore, you are missing the point of Artisinal's post. He suggested that BIS needs someone else to make the same kind of game as Arma, a realistic military simulator, to push them to make their realistic military simulator better. Not that the success of Battlefield, which has been around for almost as long as Arma/OFP, and been more popular than those games throughout it's entire lifespan, is pushing BIS to make their game less realistic. This is like comparing Falcon 4.0 and DCS to Crimson Skies and Ace Combat. They are simply not trying to accomplish the same things, and the things that Ace Combat does do not affect what DCS does.

ARMA 3 - Dropped out features

That's the thing, though. There are very few differences between the gameplay of Arma 2 and Arma 3. It's one of the major problems I have with it. The only thing that could even kind of be construed as less realistic is the mouse control, and when we are talking about how I control my virtual body, I will take something that feels right over something that is right 100% of the time. Other than that, the bullet penetration system is better. The vehicle damage system is mostly the same. The vehicle controls are mostly the same. The aircraft are exactly the same. The medical system is mostly the same (FAKs aren't really worse, just more of a continuation of the basic premise of the medical system in Arma 2). The movement system is better/more realistic. So overall, it's not really more realistic, but it's not really less realistic either. Edit: Don't want to keep bumping this thread Arma is far from a twitch shooter, and plenty of actual twitch shooters have inertia. CS, for example. Twitch shooter is always a term that bothered me, anyway. Many so called twitch shooters have substantial elements that require the exact opposite of twitch shooting: tracking, or the ability to hold your crosshair over a rapidly moving target for an extended period of time. Anyway, I agree that Arma should not be an arena shooter, but disagree that not feeling like I am fighting with the game to control my movements and aiming is unrealistic. I've never gotten stuck in a doorway in real life. Aircraft are realistically armed. There is only one fixed wing vehicle, so I can't speak much on that topic, but I don't know what more you want from attack helicopters than AGMs, rockets, and a cannon. I will admit that many factions have the same turrets, but that is more of an asset issue than a mechanics one. FAKs just take the consistent Arma gameplay mechanic of allowing medics to fully heal players with a simple animation and apply it to an intermediate level of healing. It's exactly the same mechanic as Arma 2, with an intermediate stage of healing. Whether or not it's realistic is irrelevant to the fact that it is not less realistic than Arma 2. I would argue that the low armor value of MRAPs is also an asset issue, as the game is completely missing light armored vehicles like HMMWVs to take their place. The fact that OPFOR have full body armor when no one else does is the complete opposite of balance, and I believe that it's also a relatively new feature that is still being adjusted. P.S. For someone so concerned with realism in all aspects, you don't seem to know the difference between a clip and a magazine.

In what way is OFP less realistic than Arma 2? Also, Myke, for what it's worth, I understand why a lot of threads get closed, as they frequently devolve into pointless circular arguments. Edit: Harry, that kind of is overly pedantic. Call of Duty and Battlefield are not at all direct competitors to Arma, any more than Sim City and Unreal Tournament are. Heck, they are barely competitors to each other. Also, what is all this talk about Arma 3 being less simulation oriented? It's still essentially the same game as Arma 2.

ARMA 3 - Dropped out features

No, it was literally just you that wanted this. ACE is a great mod, but it's not for everyone and there is a large portion of the community that does not use it. You might also like to know that railguns are being worked on by the military right now. I'm not sure how you think anything about Arma 3 is like Halo. At all.
  8. No it doesn't. And what it does have is almost entirely from the community documenting it themselves.

    Halo to Parachute landing realism

There's probably a better way to put this, but it feels like animations drive actions in Arma, as opposed to actions driving the animations. It's really awkward and clunky and I had hoped that it would change with Arma 3 and the announcement about a new animation system but it's just as bad as ever.

    An Honest Review

Graphics is such a trivial thing to be concerned about in two games that look quite good. Then again it also seems strange to me how many people complain about lack of assets when so few advancements have been made in core game mechanics since OFP. Graphics are one of the only things that consistently advances from game to game.

ARMA 3 - Dropped out features

I understand this point of view, but from the other side of things, if we don't let BIS know that we expect more, then they will just keep doing what they are doing, thinking everyone is content with things the way they are. By and large I think Arma is making good strides, I just don' think they are big enough. There just haven't been that many core advancements in this series over the last decade. Obviously we are all posting here because we like this game, except maybe Archbishop Lazarus, and we aren't complaining because we want the game to fail.

    [SUGGESTION] Seasonal Foliage

This is a cool idea, but wouldn't it bloat up the install with basically triple the amount of foliage textures? There's got to be a better way. I guess you could experiment with Minecraft's biome shading model for seasonal foliage. I have no idea if that would look good at higher res.

Is this seriously the reason you are choosing Arma 3 over Arma 2?
  14. These could certainly be factors limiting the advancement of Arma. The competition isn't mediocre, it's nonexistent. There is also a group of people that react with a great deal of hostility when people criticize this series (which is to be expected with any niche product). So there really isn't anyone challenging BIS to be better but themselves. I don't know, that might be enough.

    Name and chat not showing

I haven't played multiplayer since the latest patch, but there was a bug where alt-tabbing or hitting escape would cause all of the chat, player names, and VOIP identifications to disappear. Going back to the server lobby and then rejoining would fix it. I have no idea if this has been fixed, though.
  16. I'm curious as to what makes you say that RV is the only engine capable of doing what it does. Don't mistake the fact that certain engines have only been used for certain games as evidence that they are only capable of making those types of games. Star Citizen is a pretty hugely ambitious project that is being developed for CryEngine. I'm certainly not advocating for licensing a different engine, but let's not make false statements about other engines' capabilities. It's also worth noting that game engines are not just a delivery vehicle for graphics, so the graphical fidelity of Arma 3 is pretty irrelevant. I'm not sure I understand this. You are saying that we should not be striving for a solid 60 FPS? I feel like performance is a pretty huge aspect of game, and since 60 FPS is pretty much the standard for smooth gameplay, then it should probably be our benchmark. Especially since so many things in Arma are framerate dependent. Ever notice how your machine gun starts shooting slower when you have less than ~40 FPS?
  17. Um, yes? Frostbite debuted in 2008. Call of Duty is still using the IW engine, but every Battlefield game since Bad Company has been on a completely different engine than everything leading up to it. Unless you want to make the stretch of an argument that IW engine is still id Tech 3, then RV is one of the oldest engines in the business. Also, I believe we have already established that the last 13 years has not been so much about refining as it has been tacking new stuff on, as evidenced by the large amount of cleanup work BIS did for Arma 3. Furthermore, the kind of hyperbole in the last part of your post isn't going to do anything to further the discussion. The only thing anyone wants is for Arma to be brought up to modern standards, especially if we are going to be paying AAA prices. I doubt anyone cares how it's done, and no one is pushing for 6 month development times. Especially since Arma 3 was in development for at least 3 years and is arguably still in development.

    What is "True" Arma ?

This seems like a strange comment to make, given that multiplayer has been in the game since day one. As for the topic, it seems like a pointless argument. Arma is a lot of different things to a lot of different people. The only thing I know for sure is that for some reason everyone likes to try and push their ideas of the "right" way to play Arma on everyone else, despite the fact that is has had an extremely varied amount of content and players from the very beginning.

ARMA 3 - Dropped out features

You must have quoted the wrong post; that one has nothing to do with content. It was directed at Progamer and his constant statements about the dev team, their feelings, opinions and intentions despite not actually being on the dev team. His statement that the last thread caused the development team to be "less open" is not one that can be proven unless someone on the dev team actually says so. Furthermore, there is little evidence that the devs have been less open in the first place, since the devs have been fairly active in engaging with the community on the forums recently, as evidenced by the 15 dev posts in threads on the first page, not including stickies. While it may not be as strong as an out and out promise, it seems fairly reasonable to expect content that was shown in screenshots to show up in some form or other. As for missing game content and features: we have no idea what was cut and what is still to come, as the dev team has not made any statements on that front. All we know is that more content is coming. The extent to which content will be added is unknown at this stage.

ARMA 3 - Dropped out features

Did they? I see 5 threads with posts from devs in them on the first page. You really need to work on not making completely unsubstantiated statements.
  21. Don't do this, man. It makes everyone think there is news when there isn't.
  22. Didn't BIS just go through a big process of refactoring to strip out old code? I know I remember some posts about rewriting a bunch of stuff with the AI because there was a bunch of old code left over and it wasn't clear what it was for. I assumed that the reason that Arma 3 is in the state it is in is because refactoring turned out to be a bigger job than they thought. Obviously I don't know for sure that this is the case. The engine is 12 years old and has many, many games behind it. You have to imagine that over a decade a substantial amount of bloat is introduced. There are entries in the key config that are left over from previous games. At some point you are rewriting so much of the engine that it's not even really the same engine anymore. Is RV at that point yet? I don't know, but they can't keep using the same engine forever.
