Player's Profile Rating System To Stop Stupid Behaviour On Public Servers?
roshnak replied to infiltrator_2k's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
What does Battleye have to do with anything? I thought this thread was about whether players should be blacklisted from the community for behaviors that you don't approve of that don't involve cheating. But, yeah, what anti-cheat system hasn't been able to be bypassed? -
But why? If it's the result of you naturally adapting to the recoil of the gun in real life, why shouldn't the game require you to do the same thing? Why would you want the game to simulate your avatar adapting the the recoil of the gun when it is perfectly possible to actually adapt to the recoil of the gun? You will most likely even see the same results of an an initial muzzle rise (or dip, if the player overcompensates) and then a leveling off of weapon as the player gets a feel for how much (s)he needs to counter the recoil.
-
Recoil control is definitely not something that just comes naturally, though. Not really, because hand-eye coordination is basically the primary skill requirement of most video games. It's their bread and butter. It's one of the easiest skills to transfer to video games. Ok, a couple of things: First, and with the caveat that I have never fired a fully automatic weapon, it does not seem likely to me recoil control is an unconscious act. It seems to me that it would require deliberate effort to push a continuously recoiling gun back on target. Second, tapering off recoil to simulate your avatar's hand-eye coordination is a surefire way to throw off your actual ability to counter recoil through muscle memory. It is much easier to counter your crosshair moving at a constant rate than it is to continuously adjust for a crosshair moving at changing speeds.

Weapon Resting & Deployment Feedback
roshnak replied to solzenicyn's topic in ARMA 3 - DEVELOPMENT BRANCH
Pretty sure that's exactly what the post you're quoting is saying. Edit: Yeah, I think he was saying that a weapon resting indicator shouldn't be tied to the crosshair because there are valid reasons that someone may want the crosshair disabled but also to keep the weapon resting indicator enabled. -
Basically this. Unless, of course, someone can explain why a gun would start recoiling less the longer it is being fired.

Player's Profile Rating System To Stop Stupid Behaviour On Public Servers?
roshnak replied to infiltrator_2k's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Are you saying that you have never broken the rules in a server before? Never teamkilled someone on purpose or accident? You've never had fun at someone else's expense in a video game? Never done anything that would get you downrated in the proposed system at all? I don't care if people get banned from a server by an admin for breaking the rules. I think it's a stupid idea to create a permanent record that follows players from server to server. -
Weapon Resting & Deployment Feedback

Except that having a disabled crosshair is when you most need a resting indicator. Like da12thMonkey said, an indicator would be useful for knowing when you weapon is rested without looking down the sights. With a crosshair, it's a fair bit easier to tell when you're rested because the crosshairs collapse more than normal (it's still not as obvious as I would like in some cases). Without a crosshair, it is much more difficult to tell whether your weapon is rested without bringing up the sights. A small dot or anything else ambiguous is also not necessarily a good idea from a design perspective. If there is going to be an indicator it should be clear about what it indicates. -
Player's Profile Rating System To Stop Stupid Behaviour On Public Servers?

How about instead of this terrible idea server admins pay attention and enforce the rules on their servers? This is a video game. Sometimes people feel like screwing around and they shouldn't be blacklisted for that, even if it is frustrating. This is a sandbox game and there are numerous reasons a player might incur a negative score that do not involve teamkilling or griefing. -
Why not?

Weapon Resting & Deployment Feedback

I don't think it is instantaneous. It seems to take a second or two to kick in for me. I strongly disagree. -

What harm would an indicator do? There's no reason you couldn't turn it off if you want, and if weapon resting is truly as intuitive as some people are saying it is, there would be no disadvantage in doing so. What about people who don't use the crosshair? -

But wouldn't this have the side effect of also making long range shooting significantly easier, potentially bringing us back to a point where it's preferable to engage the enemy from 500+ meters away?

Did you read the posts that started this discussion? Eggbeast: Fatigue is too punishing because in real life, soldiers train to travel this far in this amount of time and fight at the end of it. DNK: In Arma, you can do the same thing, but faster.

Weapon Inertia & Sway Feedback (dev branch)
roshnak replied to solzenicyn's topic in ARMA 3 - DEVELOPMENT BRANCH
I would guess that the odds that any two people experience weapon sway the same (in real life) are very small. The first one, I think. This: -

I do kinda think the sway pattern goes on for too long, though, if that makes sense. It makes it a bit harder to learn to predict or counter the sway than I think is really necessary. -
Why do you keep suggesting that people speak to gunsmiths? Why would a gunsmith necessarily have any knowledge of this stuff at all? That's like telling people to talk to a mechanic about what racing cars is like.

So, I've asked this before (I believe in the weapon sway thread) and I don't think you ever answered: Why didn't the people that you're talking about want to play Arma 3 for the year that it was out when it had Arma 2's weapon sway mechanics? You can answer this in the weapon sway thread if you don't to derail this one. Edit: On topic: I assume that BIS was trying to make the game more fun and balanced (in their opinions) by creating a greater sense of diversity and choice (equipment loadouts, use of ground transport vehicles, etc.) through the addition of a more realistic (according to some) and punishing fatigue system. I doubt that they changed the fatigue system just for the sake of realism. Of course, fun is subjective.

Hence the part of my post that says that it's not a very helpful argument to have. Edit: Asked this in the fatigue thread, but it probably belongs here. Why didn't the people that you're talking about want to play Arma 3 for the year that it was out when it had Arma 2's weapon sway mechanics? -
Are you complaining about Arma 3? You need to watch this video.
roshnak replied to ajsarge's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
I believe that he mentions who the video is aimed at fairly early on, and mentions the people who comment on his videos in particular. Since these are Youtube comments we're talking about here, do you really have any problem believing that they are often incredibly hostile? Even if it is only aimed at a vocal minority of players, what is it that makes it misleading and patronising? -
How Long And How Much Work To Build Future New Engine?
roshnak replied to infiltrator_2k's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Well, as someone with modern hardware (4690k, GTX 970), I can only say that I am not experiencing the same issues you are, and neither are others that I know with similar hardware. It seems highly unlikely that "Arma just runs worse on modern hardware" is the explanation for your problems. -
I think I understand what you are saying, and, again, Arma 3 already does this. I guess you just want it to zoom in even more. Personally, I think that doing that would make ranged optics like the RCO redundant. Here's a gameplay feature I don't want: The action menu. I know it's not likely to be addressed within Arma 3's lifetime (if it ever is), but that thing has never not been terrible, and I would super love it if I never had to deal with it ever again.
-
Yeah, and what Greenfist is saying is that is already in Arma 3, except that in Arma 3 you have a lot more zoom and can do it indefinitely, just hold mouse 2. Are you asking for more zoom? Two stages of zoom? It would be nice to see improved weapon animations all around.

How Long And How Much Work To Build Future New Engine?
roshnak replied to infiltrator_2k's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
It hasn't been proven by anyone. It doesn't necessarily utilize all modern hardware to its full potential, but most games don't to some extent and it's not like downgrading your hardware will result in better performance.
