  1. Regarding models: You can't really learn more than by looking at the BIS sample models for A1 that are released. You can't learn to model from it, and the animation and the like are available in the model.cfg, which is embedded in the p3d file on binarization anyway. That is ofcourse unless you want to copy paste some faces in your own project (or worst). So it isn't for the same reason you got. I really see no reason against it being encrypted. Everything is encrypted in BIS games. They just tolerate the de-binarization tools. They don't really tolerate the p3d ripping tools though (all post linking to it are not available anymore on BIF).
  2. That doesn't matter. There are free software available (blender for modelling, gimp instead of PS). I own (legally) 3ds max. The license cost about 3500$. But i doubt the others using commercial software (modo, max, maya etc) have bought it for doing addons for BIS games. I really don't. I know i haven't Ohhh, how you like to turn things around now. You have said modding is about fun, and you do it for yourself first and foremost. Now, if that is true, who is there to hurry you? Your employer? You will loose anything if you were to send a damn PM and wait 2-3 days for an answer? It is NOT about this community. How many times does one need to say it to you? IT is not about the fear of someone from this community stealing from someone else, because that can be taken care after all. Why are you ppl against the OPTION (which has already been developed by BIS) being given to the addon makers to lock their PBOs. It has been said before: it doesn't mean everyone will take that step. Some will, some might, some won't. I still don't get what is the big deal about it. You obviously never did something yourself for this game. 1. if that was to happen, i wanna see how many would release something. How can my IP be transfered to BIS just because it is used in BIS games? 2. if that was too happen, it should also state that any use outside BIS game is an infrigment to copy right, and since BIS is the owner, it is IT who needs to take legal action and protect it. That is because i have transferred my IP to BIS based on some sort of agreement that says it won't be used outside this game. I doubt BIS is willing to take that step. I would ---------- Post added at 05:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:09 PM ---------- That is very true. Then again, there is an option already available developed by BIS (see the BAF DLC, and soon to be released PMC). Would that be against the open source principle, if it would allow the models to be protected?. Really? What is all open source? By reading the Why License Matters thread, as well as having some words with Dwarden, it doesn't look that way from where i am standing...
  3. I haven't thought much about it really :) - top secret
  4. neither. will have AH-17D 30MM GL
  5. really? where from? http://dev-heaven.net/projects/cca/files Which CBA you using? For A2 or OA or CO?
  6. I never said it is the only reason. But it is one of the reasons. ACE is not the mother of all problems. The real reason for the decreased interest in "common" addons is based on the fact that, even though BI implemented a way to see which addons are running on X server, it didn't implemented an automated downloader. And most ppl (admins and users) are too lazy to bother implementing/using yoma, even though there is no rocket science in it The level or professionalism needed to make an addon has increased from OFP to A1, then from A1 to A2. And it will continue to happen. That is why models nowadays have a higher commercial value than they did back in OFP day, and they require a lot of time spent with it. But hey, no one is forcing addon creation. It is not easy process, and it needs to be understood. Most of the kids nowadays want instant gratification. and for that it is easier to use someone elses work, then bother learning a new thing yourself
  7. oh come one zipper! Stop comparing piracy with selling models! Yes, in theory it is still stealing, but i doubt i will ever see 3d models ripped from game X or from person Y on torrents. Those are SOLD by a guy to one/few website(s), not shared out for free. I don't see why there's such a fuss about it, especially since no one ever said locking a pbo should be mandatory. Why is having the option to do it so fucking bad for so many ppl out here? You prefer less addons as a whole? If you don't want to use it, or all in all it is just me, DM, Rock and Max Power using it (seems we are just a few that supports it), why would you care? I'm sorry to say, but addon makers are fewer by the day, not the other way around. I am yet to see the so called self-students actually making stuff. The few that appeared in the last year have asked around on the forums, poked around on the biki and sent PMs, just like I did/do, or rock, max or whoever else.
  8. I never said that. I did say that models have a certain commercial worth. [DOT] That is without any fancy modifications. True. Sounds samples (and that is something i somehow missed from the equation) goes under the same category as models = easily moved to any other 3rd party use without much work needed. I am uncertain of scripts, or configs, especially since functions, classes and values are specific to BI games. I think that saying A or B moved a script to another platform is a bit far-fetched, even though i understand that the structure could be copied. I can only speak of what i have have seen myself, what i am aware of, and what i am accustomed with. That is what this is about. But you were advocating the open source that BI delivers with having most of the content available, then you come and say: hey, you know what, theft is bad (which it is). Again, this somehow turned into some sort of competition between different type of work for you, which is neither the scope of this thread, nor my/or anyone else intention. There is no real problem per say, but it could lead to bad blood sometimes. But you need to agree that one should be allowed to CHOOSE if his work is "pokable" or not. Besides, as Stalker said, most of the time it slows the learning curve (especially for the new ones) since they'll be hit with a block of information, from which they actually need only 2 lines or so. Selfish is when you are using other ppl work without prior approval for your own interests. About the learning process i keep hearing about: It is inevitable that somewhere on the way of creating some content for BI games, you will hit some issues. We all did. The easiest way would be to ASK about it, and in most cases you will get an answer. I have learned a lot more by cooperating with different ppl on those boards. More than i could have ever learned from pooking(as you say) in other ppl addons. There are a lot of willing people who would gladly help out around here (you don't need to be their letterfriend to get some help), a lot of live chats where you can ask anything you want (ofpec, dev-heaven etc). All it is needed is a bit of will (i for once have that skype button next to my avatar for this particular reason). Couldn't have said it better
  9. Please remove that link alef... in my mind there is. The IP can be protected using a license (CC would do). Inside BI community, controlling what gets published as original content which was in fact borrowed from someone else is pretty easy to do. Just contact a moderator with proof that it is indeed your work, as well as other admins from community mirror websites. You are right that the IP is IP no matter what form it comes in, but you are trying to compare apples with cakes (both are eatable, but that is where the similarity ends, unless a particular cake contains apples, which would be an delicious exeption ) I got two of those. It is besides the point to ask about HP models since you can't really get them in the game. But i am sure RKSL has a lot more, and some others. I'm not sure, it is a paladin (already available in vilas pack) and some random, out of my head sci fi weapon. You can check Rock's list on his webpage. You obviously missed the point of the whole thread. 1. models are special indeed because someone else can earn some real cash using your work. Nothing more nothing less 2. Your work is just as important as the next one. Every one here who has modelled something has already stated that they'll have no issue with the open source, as long as the models would remain in A2 universe, like every other thing out there that would classify as work. Yes you are right. And as we are back on the point of the thread (skipping the "doing A is more important than B" which is where this discussion lead somehow, i will reiterate: I don't feel that being able to lock PBOs contributes to the growth of the modding community, hence it is something i don't agree with. Still, a common sense when releasing anything to the public would be to include a license file for it. See THIS thread for existing discussion on the topic of "why do license matters" Additionally, there should be a certain "better way" of controlling the abuse of certain content outside the GAME EDIT_____________________________________________________ Agreed with Rock post, who beat me to it
  10. No, it is almost done, i just sort of lost interest in it for the moment, plus i haven't had much time to spare. I promise i will finish it in the near future. Sorry southy for stealing your thread once more
  11. I sort of figured it out: There a 2 distinct versions of turret, but seems the chaises and everything else is just the same. I have actually found an existing middle ground between the two, with photo references for it, which is what the my model is based of. Cheers for the link and interest mate, but have already seen every piece of info there is about BMPT in english, and some in russian.
  12. I'd actually love to see some more info about it. Images of the new systems and cockpit panels etc..

    AH-64 Pack

Nice looking model there mate. Looking forward to see how you will fit it in O2 :) Auo unwrapping? You mean max's? That is anything but realiable for hard surface modelling. Even on organic ones is might end up in crap
  14. Still need to finish up some details (lamps - front back, side guns, some hinges etc), and add the wheels on the low poly model. Further details will be modeled depending on poly count - curently at 11k polys (tris and quads) Then comes the high poly model :), and all the fun click to enlarge
  15. Wrong. Any models that are using parts of the samples released by BIS for A1 need to be delivered as open source. Nothing else. As i have already stated somewhere else, the only pbos i have opened are BIS. More to it, the entire config structure for OFP/A1/A2/OA is available on dev-heaven. So are BIS functions and scripts. The license suggestion is the current version for protecting your work. Maybe i wasn't clear enough: I am all for having every piece of code (configs/rvmats/scripts etc) available in unlocked version. The ones that i am against is the 3d mesh, and the only reason for that is because that can be used for commercial products outside BIS games, while everyhting else can't. If there was a way to lock the exporting of certain meshes from O2 into universal formats (such as 3ds), i would gladly release the mlods as well for learning purposes, and i am sure i am not the only one who would.

Arma2 OA needs CD to start

    use the beta patches.
  17. That is true. One of the reason a few addons are never gonna be released. Still, i find that making it harder for the average user to get ideas is to protect your own work one way or the other. And releasing MLODs is anything but that
  18. I would go even further, and say that besides the pboing and binarizing the content (which is there to optimize content for BIS game rather than locking content), there should be additional tools, similar to the bikey signing, unique to each modder, that would allow him to protect his work against 3rd party tools that are able to reverse-engineer the binarization process, or at least sign his content. Don't need to generalize this to the whole community The main concern of us model makers is anything but this community. It is about selling content outside it, or porting it to other games. And "taking them to court" is not as easy as you think. It means a lot of hassle from the original creator, as well as money spent with it. Not to say all this happens in an international environment, so it tenfold harder to catch the culprit. Addon making is free. Yes, we do it for fun. No one is earning anything (although some of us are selling the models as well for an extra buck on websites such turbosquid, or use it in commercial work) . You can say whatever you want, but most of the ppl in BIS community are consumers, not makers. And that is alright. They can still use the given addon, can't they? Why would i release freely the mlods for something i have worked on for months, when they could just ask ahead if they want my help? Most of the ppl here are very helpful, and they would gladly answer your question, some even post step by step tutorials from time to time. I guess an interested person could easily ask for help, and i doubt they'll see a "fuck off" response. A very good practice is to use a License for every bit of work you are doing. That way you can let others know in which ways they can use it. All of the CC licenses allow educational use for instance All in all i would like to see BIS taking a step towards allowing addon creators to protect they work even further (i am talking about models here, i couldn't care less about content that cannot be used outside this community, such as rvmats, configs, scripts and what not) against theft
  19. from forum rules: I guess since you have written everything in french, you can't read any sort of english. Pity, since you are doing your community a anti-advertising right now
  20. If you are looking for a step by step guide you won't find one. If you have editing questions though, i suggest you seek help in the Editing Forums
  21. this is again the wrong forums, and wolle is answering it... ArmA 2 & OA : CONFIGS AND SCRIPTING (addons)
  22. I am a bit confused about which version is the real thing, or the latest to be supplied to Russian Armed Forces. I have mixed reference about the same vehicle: BMPT Please note the difference around the Turret shape, as well as the side gunners hatches version 1: version 2: I would appreciate anyone who has further facts about it. Are there 2 turrent versions of the same vehicle? Which one is the real thing?
  23. I usually create a single object, welding every vertices i don't want later to be moving. I guess that is the way i am used to do it. Obviously you end up with small headaches trying to connect different typologies in place, and most likely some additional polygons (especially when you want to keep everything as quads - which is unlikely to happen without some tris here and there) There are plus and minuses about it, as everything else out there.
  24. Yes, by downloading the Unit Sample Model released by BIS for A2 http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1413200&postcount=2
