But we're not too far off. Unless you already do this, try running a modern Linux distro in parallel with your Windows one, perhaps on an older machine. This is what I do and I find myself using Windows for less and less though it's still essential for a few things. As to what people have been saying about .NET and Microsoft's alleged commitment to open standards: there is a beeeeeg trap here. Things are only "open" so long as M$ chooses not to enforce restrictive patents and sue anyone who tries to reverse engineer access to their apis, etc. A good way of shafting Linux would be for M$ to encourage world+dog to move over to these apparently open standards, then cut the ground from under them by sending in the intellectual property lawyers under one pretext or another. A large number of Linux programmers would be in a quandary: start all over again, or continue with .Net, Mono or whatever but now coding for Windows applications. Neat one.

Hi This mod sounds sensational but it won't run on my PC. After installation, all I get is a landscape with a green sky, no Codemasters splash screens or text. Anyone know what might be causing this? I've had no other problemos ever with OpFlash and have a pretty powerful PC with a gig of ram and am running 1.92. The moment I take the mod out (or the key.pbos, anyway) everything goes back to normal. I have seen a couple of peeps referring to this in the BAS tonal-tango thread, but that one's now got to 40 pages long so I thoght I'd try a new thread. Hope no one minds.

Another reason is that OpF is probably not very appealing to commercial hosting operations and the server-rent crowd. It's too demanding of hardware and bandwidth, and the OpF dedicated servers are not the most reliable or flexible so far as I can tell (the Linux one is certainly a wobbler). A commercial host can get X iterations of another popular game on his server or one iteration, maybe two, of OpF. It's a no-brainer if you are trying to maximize your rental income per machine. Nor is there a core of public in-house servers of the kind that might be offered by EA Games or NovaLogic, say, and which is run primarily as a marketing operation. Above all, though, OpF is intellectually demanding and that's always going to limit its appeal (which some people might be quite thankful for as it keeps the muppets away).

OK, Thanks y'all for replies. I'm using the tool you suggested which is extremely helpful of you, and I will have a second go over the next couple of days.

Hi I'm having some trouble getting the dedicated Linux server (1.90f) to work and I wonder if anyone can answer some queries. First, do I transfer the entire OpFlash directory across from my win2k box, down to the last .exe and .html file, the win32 dedicated server .exes, all my add-ons, etc.? Does it have to be in a folder owned by root or will a user folder do? Second, does the Linux server run on all Linux file systems? I'm using Reiser. I tried to install it the other day following a readme (with all proggies installed - uudecode, gcc, etc.) but the result was a disaster - the install process locked up and I was left with a whole lot of read-only files I couldn't remove, even using chattr. As a result, my Linux install of SuSE 8.1 went tits up due to file system corruption. Don't want this to happen again. If I can get the Linux server running this would be an ideal solution for me as it means I can serve off a second pc. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
