I was unaware that BE updated silently (the patch readme indicated that BE would be prompted to be installed, assuming no exception if already installed). I noted on my first 1.16 MP connectivity attempts, that the GameSpy Server list did not update. I could retrieve individual servers manually via 'Remote Connection', but even with servers updated to 1.16 (GamingSA), I had a 'red cross' indicating an incompatibility. This then led me to beleive that my firewall may have been interfering, so I disabled that, but produced the same result....which lead me down the path of uninstalling BE, (as the readme indicated that BE would be prompted to install during the patch process, (which isn't the case it's a silent update). It's only after further testing that I've come to realise the MP list in 1.16 is updated considerably slower than 1.15, which is almost near instant. I may have mistakenly identified the delayed reaction time as nil connectivity when had I waited longer, the list would've appeared, but it still doesn't explain why a manually set remote connection to an updated server would produce the red cross, and I don't beleive that's a BE problem, so therefore, can remove that from the equation. However, the following paragraph in the readme file could be better clarified if it's ammended with the bolded text. But, the problem with the uninstaller stands... That'll be 3 hours beta testers wages, thanks. :nono: (j/k)

I'm used to Falcon 4.0 dances (mammoth install processes), but this one's been an excruciating pain in my arse. Firstly, Patching from 1.15 to 1.16, battleye did not update, as a result, I could not join any MP game (bad version error). I overcame this by manually uninstalling battleye in the battleye sub-folder, then uninstalled the beta, then re-install the patch before any sort of connectivity was permitted. (Attempting to run the 1.16 installer with 1.16 already installed was not permitted, therefore, the patch had to be uninstalled) With battleye manually removed, the patch then prompted the installation of battleye during the 1.16 install process. However, the 1.16 beta patch uninstaller uninstalls addon components from the DBE1 mod folder, so now a server running warfare addons, cannot be accessed. I recall this being a problem with past beta patches (not 1.15 as it didn't include an uninstaller), and obviously, it hasn't been addressed.

I find it mildly disturbing, that the $65 billion dollars of funding pumped into the F-22 program nets just 187 aircraft, or just under 350 million per aircraft, without thought of an export program to offset those costs. I'd be downright furious if Congress allowed or ordered for the destruction of the F-22 tooling. The arguement that the 'F-22 isn't needed because we're fighting cave dwellers' is rubbish. The same arguement could be used to ask why the need for the F-35 when stealth is a non-issue fighting Terry Taliban, when existing frontline aircraft are already doing the job, with far greater payloads, similar loiter times, and still in complete inpunity. The F-22 is the spiritual successor to the F-15, likewise the F-35A a true successor to the F-16. The C variant is the pick of the F-35 bunch, but not so much of a successor to the F/A-18 due to the lessened survivability of a single engine in Naval Ops, but has a superior wing, payload and range than the A model, which puts into question why the need for two conventional designs, when just the C would suffice. The F-35 B, on the other hand, should never have been in the equation. All it does is introduce compromises into the design. A new generation V/TOL aircraft should have been designed from the ground up, not bastardised out of the design process for a predominantly CTOL airframe. The expectation this design will do fine in the CAS role is a farce. The pedigree of good CAS aircraft, the A-1's, A-10's, and F-4's, is that they carried huge amounts of ordnance into the battlefield and could rain hell repeatedly if required, take fire, and still carry the pilot home to live and fight another day. I don't expect the F-35 to tick any of those boxes, when an aircraft of equal if not greater performance than the A-10, is the aircraft most needed on the modern battlefield.

I 100% agree. Using a joystick with throttle for fixed wing flight in ArmA ruins the simulation of flight. I want the throttle to act solely to control engine thrust... When the throttle is at 0%, I do not want the airbrakes extended, I just want to cut engine thrust. This should be a high priority fix... Implement a HOTAS Joystick checkbox or advanced joystick configuration menu if you must.

It's hard to accurately tell from the press who's the good guy and who's the bad guy with the level of disinformation seen. There is no disputing South Ossetia is the soverign territory of Georgia. Russian interests should cease beyond the peak of the Greater Caucasus Mountain range, and Russia's distribution of passports to the people beyond that has questionable motives. But Saakashvili's agressive action to reassert control of the province whilist Russian peacekeeping forces were still present, was foolish, and has failed miserably. Even if Georgian forces had secured the links connecting Russia, the response from Moscow was never going to be good... A very short-sighted decision from Tblisi, based on optimism and a false hope of genuine western military backing. Georgia failed to realise, that the west has absolutely no desire for direct conflict with Russia. The risks are not worth it, which is why NATO membership was rejected, despite US backing. Had NATO membership been granted, it would have prevented the Russian retaliation, but it could have lead to Russia switching off the energy supply lines that feed so much of Europe. Russia is regaining it's sense of 'realist' diplomacy, wherby it will swing it's weight to ensure results in its favour. Saakashvili played his cards wrong, and will be left at the mercy of Putin. I don't think Russian forces will move permanently beyond the disputed Ossetian or the freshly occupied Abkhazian provinces (though attacking Georgian military installations would not be out of the question); But I'd suspect Russia won't be handing control of the provinces over to the Georgians if ever, least there be a solid UN resolution in the area, with widespread conditions attached.

Yeah, quite a shame it's cancelled. Even worse is the probability that an event stepped in such tradition, is unlikely to happen again. I didn't care much for the purpose built machinery, but the motorbikes, production cars and trucks in particular, were simply awesome to watch! All is not lost though. I'm sure there are other vast, desolate places on earth to test the endurance of man and machine , with far greater political stability! Siberia, Northern Canada, and the Australian outback, all come to mind as equally challenging environments!

I think you'll find most people in a stable democracy, want radical political change like a kick in the nuts. Those that do want radical change, are a vocal minority, usually, by one-eyed idealists or radicals. Now, if you talked too someone, living in a system where they're constantly under threat, a revolution may very well be the only way for change.

My second Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro has finally bit the dust. These sticks are by far, the best to be made in the last decade, and it's a real shame they can't be bought new anymore, as everything else on the market nowadays isn't anywhere near as gracefully styled, nor reliable. Anyway, I'm looking at getting a HOTAS setup, such as the Saitek X-52. or X-52 Pro, by the end of the month. Unfortunately, I can't locate a brand new X-45 anywhere, because the MFD on the X-52 looks like a gimmick I could well and truly do without. I can comfortably afford the $100 premium the X-52 pro has over the X-52, but I'm wondering whether anyone with any experience in these sticks can say if it's worth paying the extra dollars , particuarly when I 'could' use that money to go towards a set of flight pedals. Other suggestions are welcome!

You may have just sold me on the X-52 pro. I'm hearing the normal X-52 is simply an updated X-45 with the MFD wacked on. Force Feedback isn't an issue for me. I prefer a sprung, naturally centering stick. I've sourced the X-52 @ $185 au, and the X-52 pro at $295 au. The only thing stopping me from getting them right now, is that the store is located 1,600 km's away. (Australia's too bloody big sometimes), with the main retail chains not willing to go anywhere near those prices. Normally I'd get them sent in the post, but I'll be holidaying 10 minutes down the road from the place at the end of the month, and if I can save a couple of bucks on courier charges, I will!

Should've reported earlier, but I've had a shitload of problems with my rig since building it.... Initially, I thought there was a graphics card problem, seeing as my system would freeze whilist gaming...... A faulty powersupply cooked 2 motherboards, and a stick of RAM later.... It's all running smooth! Thankfully, all was replaced under warranty. I've been so busy chasing all this up, I've had zero time to go find somewhere that stocks ARMA!

I've just built a rig to similar specs. Gigabyte P35C-DS3R motherboard Intel Quad Core Q6600 Gigabyte 8600GT WD 320G SATA II HDD 2GIG OCZ DDRII 800 XP Pro SP2 My choices were, based on cost, right now practicality, and future proofing. I was considering buying some version of Vista, but after reading about the various versions of Vista and their memory restrictions, it occurred to me that only Vista Ultimate was practical, but at this time, it is neither cost effective, nor reliable enough, nor compatible enough with some mapping applications I use, to meet my study, and eventually, professional needs. I will eventually upgrade to Vista, but only once I'm convinced it bears more worth to me, than hassle. Unfortunately, I don't have ARMA yet, (I'm still configuring critical software), though by mid-week, I should be able to report my rigs performance.

I'm in my final year of a GIS degree. I can't think of where to begin lecturing, but the possibilities, are quite literally, endless! Google Earth, whilst great for Joe Blow, has quite low spatial accuracy and is of very little use any detailed mapping. The patch-work of images Google has utilised for it's programs and online mapping, are poorly geo-referenced and mosaiced. Generally, one 'full' image (Google splits full images into lots of smaller ones for streaming efficiency) will be poorly lined up in comparison to another 'full image', IE... the topography is shifted. Whilst they should be commended for a very useful program, it's of little use for the creation of DEM's, especially if they're to be the basis of a 3D world. You need raw data such as contour and spot heights, and raw images straight from the agencies, responsible for distributing them… Anything but cheap! If you want accuracy, you wouldn't be using Google for anything. Then there are the issues of different agencies, using different height datum’s, projections, co-ordinate systems, units of measurement, file types e.t.c. …..The list goes on and on and on! Whilst conversion to a common standard is achievable, it would be extremely time consuming!
